Preparation, characterization, structure-property relationships, and thermal degradation kinetics of poly (lactic acid)/amidated potassium hydrogen phthalate intercalated layered double hydroxides nanocomposites

Roles of phosphoramide derivatives in flame retardancy, thermal degradation and crystallization behaviors of polylactic acid

Two kinds of phosphoramide derivatives containing one (POFA) or two (BPOFA) phosphoramide bonds were synthesized using diphenylphosphinic chloride, phenylphosphonic dichloride and furfurylamine, respectively. The flame retardancy, thermal degradation and crystallization behaviors of polylactic acid (PLA)/POFA and PLA/BPOFA blends were investigated using the limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 vertical burning tests, cone calorimeter tests, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. A small amount of 1.0 wt% BPOFA increases the LOI of PLA from 20.4 vol% to 28.0 vol% and achieves the UL-94 V0 rating, while 7.0 wt% POFA is needed to achieve the UL-94 V0 rating indicating that the PLA/BPOFA has better flame retardancy than that of PLA/POFA. Both POFA and BPOFA decrease the amount of flammable gaseous compounds and play positive roles in transesterification of PLA. More importantly, BPOFA is easier to catalyze the degradation of PLA and improve UL-94 rating by melting-away mode. Moreover, the BPOFA accelerates the crystallization rate and thus improves the crystallinity of PLA, while POFA does not show a positive effect on crystallization behaviors of PLA.

Direct contact, dissolution and generation of reactive oxygen species: How to optimize the antibacterial effects of layered double hydroxides

Infections by pathogenic bacteria have been threatening several fields as food industries, agriculture, textile industries and healthcare products. Layered double hydroxides materials (LDHs), also called anionic clays, could be utilized as efficient antibacterial materials due to their several interesting properties such as ease of synthesis, tunable chemical composition, biocompatibility and anion exchange capacity. Pristine LDHs as well as LDH-composites including antibacterial molecules and nanoparticles loaded-LDHs were proven to serve as efficient antibacterial agents against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. The achieved antibacterial effect was explained by the following mechanisms: (1) Direct contact between the materials and bacterial cells driven by electrostatic interactions between positively charged layers and negatively charged cell membranes, (2) Dissolution and gradual release over time of metallic ions or antibacterial molecules, (3) Generation of reactive oxygen species.

Performance and multi-scale investigation on the phase miscibility of poly(lactic acid)/amided silica nanocomposites

In this work, amino-functionalized nano-SiO₂ (m@g-SiO₂) was synthesized through coupling reaction on the surface of nano-SiO₂. Moreover, the optimum preparation conditions of m@g-SiO₂ were selected via orthogonal experiments as follows: reaction temperature of 80 °C, reaction time of 8 h, the mass ratio of stearic acid, N,N'‑carbonyldiimidazole, imidazole hydrochloride and g-SiO₂ of 0.5:0.7:0.7:1. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, static angle measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy unanimously confirmed the formation of m@g-SiO₂. Furthermore, poly(lactic acid)(PLA)/m@g-SiO₂ nanocomposites was prepared with m@g-SiO₂ as fillers to improve the comprehensive performance of PLA. Then, the mechanical properties and crystallization behavior of PLA/m@g-SiO₂ nanocomposites were studied, which showed that the impact strength and elongation-at-break of PLA/m@g-SiO₂ (0.3 wt%) nanocomposites were increased by 78.05% and 1148%, respectively, and its crystallinity was increased by 26.46%. Simultaneously, thermal gravimetric analysis indicated that the thermal stability of PLA/m@g-SiO₂ nanocomposites was improved. Eventually, the multi-scale investigation on the phase miscibility of PLA/m@g-SiO₂ nanocomposites was probed by rheological behaviors analysis and the molecular dynamics simulations, which confirmed that surface modification of SiO₂ greatly enhanced the interaction energy and miscibility between the filler and PLA bulk.
