Study of Curing Characteristics of Cellulose Nanofiber-Filled Epoxy Nanocomposites

In recent years, much attention was focused on developing green materials and fillers for polymer composites. This work is about the development of such green nanofiller for reinforcement in epoxy polymer matrix. A cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-filled epoxy polymer nanocomposites was prepared in this work. The effect of CNF on curing, thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties of epoxy polymer is evaluated in this study. CNF were extracted from banana fiber using acid hydrolysis method and then filled in epoxy polymer at various concentration (0–5 wt.%) to form CNF-filled epoxy nanocomposites. The structure and morphology of the CNF-filled epoxy nanocomposites were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Curing studies shows CNF particles acts as a catalytic curing agent with increased cross-link density. This catalytic effect of CNF particles has positively affected tensile, thermal (thermogravimetry analysis and dynamic mechanical analysis) and water barrier properties. Water uptake test of nanocomposites was studied to understand the barrier properties. Overall result also shows that the CNF can be a potential green nanofiller for thermoset epoxy polymer with promising applications ahead.

Rheological Behavior of Polymer/Carbon Nanotube Composites: An Overview

This paper reviews the current achievements regarding the rheological behavior of polymer-based nanocomposites containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs). These systems have been the subject of a very large number of scientific investigations in the last decades, due to the outstanding characteristics of CNTs that have allowed the formulation of nanostructured polymer-based materials with superior properties. However, the exploitation of the theoretical nanocomposite properties is strictly dependent on the complete dispersion of CNTs within the host matrix and on the consequent development of a huge interfacial region. In this context, a deep knowledge of the rheological behavior of CNT-containing systems is of fundamental importance, since the evaluation of the material's viscoelastic properties allows the gaining of fundamental information as far as the microstructure of nanofilled polymers is concerned. More specifically, the understanding of the rheological response of polymer/CNT nanocomposites reveals important details about the characteristics of the interface and the extent of interaction between the two components, hence allowing the optimization of the final properties in the resulting nanocomposites. As the literature contains plenty of reviews concerning the rheological behavior of polymer/CNT nanocomposites, this review paper will summarize the most significant thermoplastic matrices in terms of availability and relevant industrial applications.

In situ gelation of rhEGF-containing liquid crystalline precursor with good cargo stability and system mechanical properties: a novel delivery system for chronic wounds treatment

The objective of this study was to develop a novel delivery system for recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) for chronic wound treatment. Such a delivery system should be of good cargo stability and system mechanical properties in order to guarantee a satisfactory wound-healing effect. rhEGF-containing lyotropic liquid crystalline precursors (rhEGF-LLCPs) with in situ gelation capability were considered as a promising candidate to achieve this aim. Various properties of the optimal formulations (rhEGF-LLCP1 and rhEGF-LLCP2) were characterized, including apparent viscosity, gelation time, in vitro release and phase behavior. The stability of rhEGF and system mechanical properties (i.e. mechanical rigidity and bioadhesive force) were verified. Interestingly, rhEGF-LLCP2 with a larger internal water channel diameter exhibited faster release rate in vitro and then better bioactivity in Balb/c 3T3 and HaCaT cell models. Moreover, rhEGF-LLCP2 showed distinct promotion effects on wound closure, inflammatory recovery and re-epithelization process in Sprague-Dawley rat models. In conclusion, rhEGF-LLCP emerged as a prospective candidate to preserve the stability and enhance the wound-healing effect of rhEGF, which might serve as a new delivery system for chronic wound therapies.

Frequency or Amplitude?-Rheo-Electrical Characterization of Carbon Nanoparticle Filled Epoxy Systems

Dispersion of carbon nanoparticles in epoxy resin is the key factor to adjust the resulting electrical and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite. A profound understanding of the driving forces of standard methods like ultrasonic and mechanical dispersion is necessary. To derive the impact of applied frequency and strain on the resulting dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-filled epoxy resin, this work addresses the strain and frequency dependency of oscillatory shear flow-induced network changes. Strain- and frequency-sweeps were performed for a wide parameter set with in-line measurement of electrical DC resistance to monitor changes in the MWCNT network. Changes in electrical resistance reveal destruction and formation of the MWCNT network. A fundamental novel finding is the governing dependency of changes in the electrical network on applied shear amplitude. The applied frequency barely induces network changes. Applied shear rates do not correlate with particular network states.
