Multiple shape memory effects oftrans-1,4-polyisoprene and low-density polyethylene blends

Intelligent Eucommia ulmoides Rubber/Ionomer Blends with Thermally Activated Shape Memory and Self-Healing Properties

Intelligent Eucommia ulmoides rubber (EUR) and ionomer Surlyn resin (SR) blends were prepared and studied in this manuscript. This is the first paper to combine EUR with SR to prepare blends with both the shape memory effect and self-healing capability. The mechanical, curing, thermal, shape memory and self-healing properties were studied by a universal testing machine, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), respectively. Experimental results showed that the increase in ionomer content not only improved mechanical and shape memory properties but also endowed the compounds with excellent self-healing ability under the appropriate environmental conditions. Notably, the self-healing efficiency of the composites reached 87.41%, which is much higher than the efficiency of other covalent cross-linking composites. Therefore, these novel shape memory and self-healing blends can expand the use of natural Eucommia ulmoides rubber, such as in special medical devices, sensors and actuators.

Facile Fabrication of Eucommia Rubber Composites with High Shape Memory Performance

We processed a series of shape memory Eucommia rubber (ER) composites with both carbon–carbon and ionic cross-linking networks via a chemical cross-linking method. The influence of the carbon–carbon cross-linking and ion cross-linking degree of ER composites on curing, mechanical, thermal, and shape memory properties were studied by DSC, DMA, and other analytical techniques. Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and zinc dimethacrylate (ZDMA) played a key role in preparing ER composites with a double cross-linking structure, where DCP initiated polymerization of ZDMA, and grafted ZDMA onto polymer molecular chains and cross-linked rubber molecular chains. Meanwhile, ZDMA combined with rubber macromolecules to build ionic cross-linking bonds in composites under the action of DCP and reinforced the ER composites. The result showed that the coexistence of these two cross-linking networks provide a sufficient restoring force for deformation of shape memory composites. The addition of ZDMA not only improved the mechanical properties of materials, but also significantly enhanced shape memory performance of composites. In particular, Eucommia rubber composites exhibited outstanding mechanical properties and shape memory performance when DCP content was 0.2 phr.

Thermo-Responsive Shape Memory Behavior of Methyl Vinyl Silicone Rubber/Olefin Block Copolymer Blends via Co-Crosslinking

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are developed by blending and cross-linking polymers which include crystalline domains and cross-linked networks. In this paper, we describe the morphology, thermal and shape memory behavior of methyl vinyl silicone rubber (MVMQ)/olefin block copolymer (OBC) blends prepared by a melt-blending and chemical cross-linking method. MVMQ without crystalline domains could not hold its temporary shape. After introducing the OBC, the obtained blends exhibited excellent dual shape memory properties. The cross-linking networks of MVMQ acted as reversible domains, while crystalline regions of OBC worked as fixed domains. When the blending ratio of MVMQ/OBC was 50/ 50, the blend had both a high shape fixity ratio and shape recovery ratio.

Shape Memory Behavior of Carbon Black-reinforced Trans-1,4-polyisoprene and Low-density Polyethylene Composites

Shape memory composites of trans-1,4-polyisoprene (TPI) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) with easily achievable transition temperatures were prepared by a simple physical blending method. Carbon black (CB) was introduced to improve the mechanical properties of the TPI/LDPE composites. The mechanical, cure, thermal and shape memory properties of the TPI/LDPE/CB composites were investigated in this study. In these composites, the crosslinked network generated in both the TPI and LDPE portions acted as a fixed domain, while the crystalline regions of the TPI and LDPE portions acted as a reversible domain in shape memory behavior. We found the mechanical properties of composites were promoted significantly with an increase of CB content, accompanied with the deterioration of shape memory properties of composites. When CB dosage was 5 parts per hundred of rubber composites (phr), best shape memory property of composites was obtained with a shape fixity ratio of 95.1% and a shape recovery ratio of 95.0%.
