Synthesis and Characterization of the Inclusion Complex of β-cyclodextrin and Azomethine

A β-cyclodextrin (β-Cyd) inclusion complex containing azomethine as a guest was prepared by kneading method with aliquot addition of ethanol. The product was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, ¹H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (¹H NMR) and Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA), which proves the formation of the inclusion complex where the benzyl part of azomethine has been encapsulated by the hydrophobic cavity of β-Cyd. The interaction of β-Cyd and azomethine was also analyzed by means of spectrometry by UV-Vis spectrophotometer to determine the formation constant. The formation constant was calculated by using a modified Benesi-Hildebrand equation at 25 °C. The apparent formation constant obtained was 1.29 × 10⁴ L/mol. Besides that, the stoichiometry ratio was also determined to be 1:1 for the inclusion complex of β-Cyd with azomethine.

Mesomorphic Behavior of Symmetrical and Unsymmetrical Azomethines with Two Imine Groups

Seven symmetrical azomethines with two imine groups (HC=N) were synthesized by condensation of the benzene-1,4-dicarboxaldehyde with five amines (first group: A1-A5) and of the 2,5-thiophenedicarboxaldehyde with two amines (second group: AT1-AT2). Additionally, two unsymmetrical azomethines were obtained by a two step condensation of benzene-1,4-dicarboxaldehyde with pyren-1-amine (1^st step) (abbreviated hereinafter as AP1) and then AP1 was reacted with 4-dodecylaniline or 4-hexadecylaniline (2^nd step) (third group: AP1A-AP1B). Liquid crystalline properties of the azomethines were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and UV-vis spectroscopy in the function of temperature [UV-vis(T)]. The Wide-Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD) technique was used to probe the structural properties of the azomethines. Mesomorphic behavior was observed for symmetrical and unsymmetrical azomethines, obtained from the benzene-1,4-dicarboxaldehyde and symmetrical ones prepared from 2,5-thiophenedicarboxaldehyde and different amines having aliphatic chains. Based on the POM and DSC measurements the following mesophases were detected: nematic, smectic A, smectic C, smectic F (I), smectic G (J).

Ionically self-assembled terephthalylidene-bis-4-n-alkylanilines/n-decanesulfonic acid supramolecules: synthesis, mesomorphic behaviour and optical properties

This paper describes the preparation, mesomorphic and photophysical studies of a two type of calamitic molecules derived from azomethines, N,N'-(1,4-phenylenebis(methan-1-yl-1-ylidene)bis(4-pentylbenzenamine) (LCBAZ1) and N,N'-(1,4-phenylenebis(methan-1-yl-1-ylidene)bis(4-decylbenzenamine) (LCBAZ2) before and after protonation with the n-decyl sulfonic acid (DSA). The lengths of the outer spacers are four or nine methylene units connected with the imine group by phenyl ring in the para position. Liquid crystal properties of the undoped and doped azomethines are studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) technique is used to probe the structural properties of the azomethines as well as its complexes. The lengths of the outer flexible spacers have an effect on the mesomorphic properties of the azomethines. The compound LCBAZ2 with nine methylene units exhibit smectic phases (Sm C and Sm X), while the LCBAZ1 with four methylene units exhibit nematic and smectic phases (N and Sm C). The effects of protonation on the phase transitions of the azomethines are investigated. The structure formation of (LCBAZx)(1)(DSA)(2) complexes are discussed on the basis of FTIR spectroscopy. Additionally, the azomethines before and after protonation with DSA are investigated by UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. With the exception of LCBAZ1 in its undoped state, the chloroform solution of the doped or undoped azomethines exhibit greenish fluorescence when the solutions are subjected to 400 nm excitation wavelength. It are concluded that the combination of the molecular and supramolecular engineering concepts stabilized the smectic phase.
