Hydrogel synthesis by aqueous Diels-Alder reaction between furan modified methacrylate and polyetheramine-based bismaleimides

A-LLTO Nanoparticles Embedded Composite Solid Polymer Electrolyte for Room Temperature Operational Li-metal Batteries

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) have the potential to revolutionize the current energy storage sector. A significant portion of the current development of electric vehicles and the electrification of various appliances relies on Lithium (Li)-ion batteries. However, future energy demands will require the development of stronger and more reliable batteries. This report presents a novel solid state electrolyte (SSE) composed of a self-healing composite solid polymer electrolyte (CSPE) matrix and aluminum-doped (Li0.33La0.56)1.005Ti0.99Al0.01O3 (A-LLTO) nanofillers. The CSPE contains Jeffamine ED-2003 monomer, Benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (BTC) crosslinker dissolved in a 1:1 ratio of Dimethylformamide (DMF) to LiPF6, and a certain amount (x) of A-LLTO nanofillers (x = 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5%). A CSPE containing x-amount of A-LLTO fillers (referred to as CAL-x%) demonstrates excellent ion-conducting properties and stable battery performance. The CAL-10% demonstrates 1.1 × 10-3 S cm-1 of ionic conductivity at room temperature (RT). A-LLTO nanofillers dispersed uniformly within the polymer matrix form a percolation network, which is believed to improve ionic conductivity and the diffusion of Li+ ions. The CR-2032 cell, consisting of LiFePO4 (LFP)║CAL-10%║Li, at RT offers an initial discharge capacity of ≈165 mAh g-1 at 0.1C rate for 120 cycles with 98.85% coulombic efficiency (C.E.).

Diels-Alder Cycloaddition Reactions in Sustainable Media

Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction is one of the most powerful strategies for the construction of six-membered carbocyclic and heterocyclic systems, in most cases with high regio- and stereoselectivity. In this review, an insight into the most relevant advances on sustainable Diels-Alder reactions since 2010 is provided. Various environmentally benign solvent systems are discussed, namely bio-based derived solvents (such as glycerol and gluconic acid), polyethylene glycol, deep eutectic solvents, supercritical carbon dioxide, water and water-based aqueous systems. Issues such as method's scope, efficiency, selectivity and reaction mechanism, as well as sustainability, advantages and limitations of these reaction media, are addressed.

Synthesis of lignin-modified cellulose nanocrystals with antioxidant activity via Diels-Alder reaction and its application in carboxymethyl cellulose film

Multifunctional polymers derived from renewable organic substances have received significant attention. In this work, the Diels-Alder "click" reaction was used to synthesize a renewable copolymer with the mechanical strength of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and the natural antioxidant activity of lignin. Chemical structural analysis and molecular weight results confirmed that lignin was successfully attached to the CNCs. Phenolic hydroxyl groups were introduced into CNCs, resulting in good antioxidant activity with an IC₅₀ value of 1.49 mg/mL, although a slight decrease in the crystallinity index and thermal properties was observed. Additionally, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films containing lignin-modified CNCs were prepared by solution casting. The lignin-modified CNCs endowed film with antioxidant activity and also contributed to increasing the tensile strength by 70%. This indicated that the lignin-modified CNCs with good antioxidant activities and mechanical strength have promising applications in multifunctional materials.

Chemically Modified Biopolymers for the Formation of Biomedical Hydrogels

Biopolymers are natural polymers sourced from plants and animals, which include a variety of polysaccharides and polypeptides. The inclusion of biopolymers into biomedical hydrogels is of great interest because of their inherent biochemical and biophysical properties, such as cellular adhesion, degradation, and viscoelasticity. The objective of this Review is to provide a detailed overview of the design and development of biopolymer hydrogels for biomedical applications, with an emphasis on biopolymer chemical modifications and cross-linking methods. First, the fundamentals of biopolymers and chemical conjugation methods to introduce cross-linking groups are described. Cross-linking methods to form biopolymer networks are then discussed in detail, including (i) covalent cross-linking (e.g., free radical chain polymerization, click cross-linking, cross-linking due to oxidation of phenolic groups), (ii) dynamic covalent cross-linking (e.g., Schiff base formation, disulfide formation, reversible Diels-Alder reactions), and (iii) physical cross-linking (e.g., guest-host interactions, hydrogen bonding, metal-ligand coordination, grafted biopolymers). Finally, recent advances in the use of chemically modified biopolymer hydrogels for the biofabrication of tissue scaffolds, therapeutic delivery, tissue adhesives and sealants, as well as the formation of interpenetrating network biopolymer hydrogels, are highlighted.

Diels-Alder Cross-Linked, Washing-Free Hydrogel Films with Ordered Wrinkling Patterns for Multicellular Spheroid Generation

Three-dimensional (3D) multicellular spheroids are a new generation in vitro cell model, however, their applications are severely limited by difficulties in their generation. Here patterned poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogel films were synthesized for their generation. Instead of polymerization of HEMA monomers in the presence of a cross-linker, here the PHEMA films were synthesized by cross-linking furan-functionalized linear PHEMA, PHEMA-furan, and maleimide-functionalized linear PHEMA, PHEMA-mal, via Diels-Alder (DA) reaction between furan and maleimide groups. A thermal treatment temperature of 75 °C was chosen for the cross-linking reaction. The occurrence of DA reaction was confirmed by IR spectra. Using this method, cross-linked PHEMA films with smooth surface were successfully synthesized in situ in the well of cell culture plates. The films were then patterned by simply adding water to swell them. Highly ordered, honeycomb-like wrinkling patterns were successfully obtained by adjusting the furan and maleimide contents in the precursor linear polymers. The patterned hydrogel films were used to generate multicellular spheroids. Guided by the patterns, 3D spheroids with narrow size distribution, tunable size, and high cell viability were successfully obtained. The patterned PHEMA films reported here exhibited a lot of advantages. The patterning method was quite simple and required no template or special equipment. They were synthesized in situ in commercial cell culture plates. Particularly, thanks to the clean nature of the DA reaction, no low molecular weight monomer, cross-linker, initiator, or catalyst, which were potentially cytotoxic, was involved in the film synthesis, and no byproduct was produced and left in the film. The resulting films presented a high biocompatibility, allowing the avoidance of the tedious washing step. The films synthesized here were expected to have high potential for massive production of well-defined multicellular spheroids.

The role of cellulose nanocrystals in biocompatible starch-based clicked nanocomposite hydrogels

Starch-based nanocomposite hydrogels were successfully prepared by the Diels-Alder click cross-linking reaction between furan-functionalized starch derivative and a water-soluble tetrafunctional maleimide compound, adding cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) as nanoreinforcement. The effect of increasing the CNC content on rheological and swelling properties as well as on the morphology of the hydrogels was analyzed. Besides, in order to evaluate the applicability of the as-prepared hydrogels as delivery systems, drug release measurements and in vitro cytotoxicity assays were also performed. It was found that the prepared nanocomposite hydrogels presented higher stiffness as the CNC content increased. The incorporation of the nanocrystals modified the internal porous microstructure of the hydrogels, affecting consequently both the swelling capacity and the drug-delivery kinetics. Moreover, the prepared nanocomposite hydrogels showed non-toxic behavior, demonstrating their potential applicability in the biomedical field, especially as sustained drug delivery systems.

Synthesis and behavior of click cross-linked alginate hydrogels: Effect of cross-linker length and functionality

Various bismaleimides and trismaleimides of varying molar masses, chemical architectures and functionalities were explored as cross-linkers for furan-modified alginate chains via Diels-Alder click reactions. An environmentally friendly approach is described for the preparation of hydrogels based on naturally occurring biomacromolecules, without catalysts. The behavior of the resulting polysaccharides-based hydrogels was analyzed in terms of swelling, rheological properties and drug-release efficiency, in connection with potential biomedical applications. The use of the different cross-linkers allows tuning the mechanical properties as well as the pulsatile swelling behavior of the hydrogels. When using trifunctional cross-linkers stiffer hydrogels were formed with high storage modulus whereas the chain length and the composition of the cross-linker clearly influence the swelling of the hydrogel network. In connection with drug delivery applications, release of vanillin as a traceable aromatic biobased model drug was also monitored as a function of hydrogel composition. To the best of our knowledge, for the first-time furan-modified alginates were reacted and studied with polyethylene glycol-based bis or trismaleimides with different molar masses and architectures, resulting in advanced hydrogels with different behavior.

Data on production and characterization of melamine-furan-formaldehyde particles and reversible reactions thereof

The data present in this article affords insides in the characterization of a newly described bi-functional furan-melamine monomer, which is used for the production of monodisperse, furan-functionalized melamine-formaldehyde particles, as described in https://doi.org/10.1016/j.eurpolymj.2019.04.006 Urdl et al., 2019. In the related research article Urdl et al., 2019 data interpretations can be found. The furan-functionalization of particles is necessary to perform reversible Diels-Alder reactions with maleimide (BMI) crosslinker to form thermoreversible network systems. To understand the reaction conditions of Diels-Alder (DA) reaction with a Fu-Mel monomer and a maleimide crosslinker, model DA reaction were performed and evaluated using dynamic FT-IR measurements. During retro Diels-Alder (rDA) reactions of the monomer system, it was found out that some side reaction occurred at elevated temperatures. The data of evaluating the side reaction is described in one part of this manuscript. Additional high resolution SEM images of Fu-Mel particles are shown and thermoreversible particle networks with BMI2 are shown. The data of different Fu-Mel particle networks with maleimide crosslinker are presented. Therefore, the used maleimide crosslinker with different spacer lengths were synthesized and the resulting networks were analyzed by ATR-FT-IR, SEM and DSC.

Alginate based antimicrobial hydrogels formed by integrating Diels-Alder "click chemistry" and the thiol-ene reaction

In recent years medical devices manufacturers have been looking for antimicrobial coatings which are biocompatible and non-toxic for a wide range of medical devices. The demand for these antimicrobial coatings has increased significantly, owing to the increased incidence of hospital-associated infections (HAIs). Hydrogels have been widely used in biomedical applications due to their hydrophilicity, biodegradability, non-toxicity and biocompatibility. In this work, sodium alginate (SA) based antibacterial hydrogels SA/PEG-HHC10 were designed and prepared by combining Diels-Alder (DA) click chemistry and the thiol-ene reaction. The hydrogels were first prepared using DA click chemistry with good mechanical strength, then the cysteine-terminated antimicrobial peptide HHC10-CYS (HHC10) was grafted into the hydrogel by the thiol-ene reaction between the oxy-norbornene group and the thiol group. The results showed that the antimicrobial hydrogels had a strong antibacterial property and good biocompatibility. Therefore, the antimicrobial hydrogels have significant potential application as coatings for implantable medical devices.

Synthesis and evaluation of functional alginate hydrogels based on click chemistry for drug delivery applications

Environment-sensitive alginate-based hydrogels for drug delivery applications are receiving increasing attention. However, most work in this field involves traditional cross-linking strategies which led to hydrogels with poor long-term stability. Herein, a series of chemically cross-linked alginate hydrogels was synthesized via click chemistry using Diels-Alder reaction by reacting furan-modified alginate and bifunctional cross-linkers. Alginate was successfully functionalized with furfurylamine. Then, 3D architectures were synthesized with water-soluble bismaleimides. Different substitution degrees were achieved in order to study the effect of alginate modification and the cross-linking extent over the behaviour of the hydrogels. The ensuing hydrogels were analysed in terms of microstructure, swelling, structure modification and rheological behaviour. The materials response to external stimuli such as pH was also investigated, revealing a pulsatile behaviour in a large pH range (1-13) and a clear pH-dependent swelling. Finally, vanillin release studies were conducted to demonstrate the potential of these biobased materials for drug delivery applications.

Chemical Synthesis of Biomimetic Hydrogels for Tissue Engineering

Owing to the high water content, porous structure, biocompatibility and tissue-like viscoelasticity, hydrogels have become attractive and promising biomaterials for use in drug delivery, 3D cell culture and tissue engineering applications. Various chemical approaches have been developed for hydrogel synthesis using monomers or polymers carrying reactive functional groups. For in vivo tissue repair and in vitro cell culture purposes, it is desirable that the crosslinking reactions occur under mild conditions, do not interfere with biological processes and proceed at high yield with exceptional selectivity. Additionally, the cross-linking reaction should allow straightforward incorporation of bioactive motifs or signaling molecules, at the same time, providing tunability of the hydrogel microstructure, mechanical properties, and degradation rates. In this review, we discuss various chemical approaches applied to the synthesis of complex hydrogel networks, highlighting recent developments from our group. The discovery of new chemistries and novel materials fabrication methods will lead to the development of the next generation biomimetic hydrogels with complex structures and diverse functionalities. These materials will likely facilitate the construction of engineered tissue models that may bridge the gap between 2D experiments and animal studies, providing preliminary insight prior to in vivo assessments.

A biomass approach to mendable bio-elastomers

Sustainable bioelastomers with high elastic recovery, high resilience and mendability are conceptualized with low chain-entanglement polymers that are predominantly originated from renewable biomass. Polymers with plant oil-derived fatty groups at the side chain were installed with furan, which allowed Diels-Alder addition to introduce dynamic covalent crosslinking. These elastomers are mendable via retro Diels-Alder. Reprocessing of these polymers led to the formation of elastomers with preservation of excellent resilience and elastic recovery.

Surface modification strategies on mesoporous silica nanoparticles for anti-biofouling zwitterionic film grafting

In the past decade, zwitterionic-based anti-biofouling layers had gained much focus as a serious alternative to traditional polyhydrophilic films such as PEG. In the area of assembling silica nanoparticles with stealth properties, the incorporation of zwitterionic surface film remains fairly new but considering that silica nanoparticles had been widely demonstrated as useful biointerfacing nanodevice, zwitterionic film grafting on silica nanoparticle holds much potential in the future. This review will discuss on the conceivable functional chemistry approaches, some of which are potentially suitable for the assembly of such stealth systems.

Maleimide Glycidyl Ether: A Bifunctional Monomer for Orthogonal Cationic and Radical Polymerizations

A novel bifunctional monomer, namely maleimide glycidyl ether (MalGE), prepared in a four-step reaction sequence is introduced. This monomer allows for selective (co)polymerization of the epoxide group via cationic ring-opening polymerization, preserving the maleimide functionality. On the other hand, the maleimide functionality can be copolymerized via radical techniques, preserving the epoxide moiety. Cationic ring-opening multibranching copolymerization of MalGE with glycidol was performed, and a MalGE content of up to 24 mol% could be incorporated into the hyperbranched polymer backbone (Mn = 1000-3000 g mol(-1)). Preservation of the maleimide functionality during cationic copolymerization was verified via NMR spectroscopy. Subsequently, the maleimide moiety was radically crosslinked to generate hydrogels and additionally employed to perform Diels-Alder (DA) "click" reactions with (functional) dienes after the polymerization process. Radical copolymerization of MalGE with styrene (Mn = 5000-9000 g mol(-1)) enabled the synthesis of a styrene copolymer with epoxide functionalities that are useful for versatile crosslinking and grafting reactions.
