Challenges, Prospects, and Emerging Applications of Inkjet-Printed Electronics: A Chemist's Point of View

Driven by the development of new functional inks, inkjet-printed electronics has achieved several milestones upon moving from the integration of simple electronic elements (e.g., temperature and pressure sensors, RFID antennas, etc.) to high-tech applications (e.g. in optoelectronics, energy storage and harvesting, medical diagnosis). Currently, inkjet printing techniques are limited by spatial resolution higher than several micrometers, which sets a redhibitorythreshold for miniaturization and for many applications that require the controlled organization of constituents at the nanometer scale. In this Review, we present the physico-chemical concepts and the equipment constraints underpinning the resolution limit of inkjet printing and describe the contributions from molecular, supramolecular, and nanomaterials-based approaches for their circumvention. Based on these considerations, we propose future trajectories for improving inkjet-printing resolution that will be driven and supported by breakthroughs coming from chemistry. Synthesis of Poly(ester-graft-methyl methacrylate) on a Macroinitiator with Lateral Sulfonyl Chloride Groups by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Abstract

New polymer brushes with an ester backbone and poly(methyl methacrylate) side chains are synthesized by polycondensation and polymerization methods. The initiating groups are sulfonyl chloride groups laterally attached to the polyester chain. PMMA side chains are grafted by the ATRP method according to the “grafting from” multicenter macroinitiator strategy. The conditions for the polymerization processes in a controlled mode are selected, and the ways of targeted regulation of the degree of polymerization of methacrylate side chains are determined. Using the synthesized copolymers self-supporting films are obtained, and their physical and mechanical properties are studied.

Glycopolymer Brushes by Reversible Deactivation Radical Polymerization: Preparation, Applications, and Future Challenges

The cellular surface contains specific proteins, also known as lectins, that are carbohydrates receptors involved in different biological events, such as cell-cell adhesion, cell recognition and cell differentiation. The synthesis of well-defined polymers containing carbohydrate units, known as glycopolymers, by reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) methods allows the development of tailor-made materials with high affinity for lectins because of their multivalent interaction. These polymers are promising candidates for the biomedical field, namely as novel diagnostic disease markers, biosensors, or carriers for tumor-targeted therapy. Although linear glycopolymers are extensively studied for lectin recognition, branched glycopolymeric structures, such as polymer brushes can establish stronger interactions with lectins. This specific glycopolymer topology can be synthesized in a bottlebrush form or grafted to/from surfaces by using RDRP methods, allowing a precise control over molecular weight, grafting density, and brush thickness. Here, the preparation and application of glycopolymer brushes is critically discussed and future research directions on this topic are suggested.

Exploring the potential of polyethylene terephthalate in the design of antibacterial surfaces

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most used polymeric materials in the health care sector mainly due to its advantages that include biocompatibility, high uniformity, mechanical strength and resistance against chemicals and/or abrasion. However, avoiding bacterial contamination on PET is still an unsolved challenge and two main strategies are being explored to overcome this drawback: the anti-adhesive and biocidal modification of PET surface. While bacterial adhesion depends on several surface properties namely surface charge and energy, hydrophilicity and surface roughness, a biocidal effect can be obtained by antimicrobial compounds attached to the surface to inhibit the growth of bacteria (bacteriostatic) or kill bacteria (bactericidal). Therefore, it is well known that granting antibacterial properties to PET surface would be beneficial in the prevention of infectious diseases. Different modification methods have been reported for such purpose. This review addresses some of the strategies that have been attempted to prevent or reduce the bacterial contamination on PET surfaces, including functionalisation, grafting, topographical surface modification and coating. Those strategies, particularly the grafting method seems to be very promising for healthcare applications to prevent infectious diseases and the emergence of bacteria resistance.

Tuning the Density of Zwitterionic Polymer Brushes on PET Fabrics by Aminolysis: Effect on Antifouling Performances

Here, we synthesize zwitterionic polymer brushes on polyester fabrics by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) after a prefunctionalization step involving an aminolysis reaction with ethylenediamine. Aminolysis is an easy method to achieve homogeneous distributions of functional groups on polyester fibers (PET) fabrics. Varying the polymerization time and the prefunctionalization conditions of the reaction, it is possible to tune the amount of water retained over the surface and study its effect on protein adhesion. This study revealed that the polymerization time plays a major role in preventing protein adhesion on the PET surface.

Hydrogel Functionalized Polyester Fabrics by UV-Induced Photopolymerization

We address a strategy to graft hydrogels onto polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics using different acrylate-based monomers. The hydrogel-modified fabrics were prepared by a two-step modification. To this end, double functional groups were firstly introduced onto the PET surface via an aminolysis reaction involving allylamine. The final grafted polymer networks were then obtained after UV-induced radical photopolymerization by varying acrylate monomer types in the presence of a cross-linker. After characterization, the resulting hydrogels showed different morphologies and abrasion resistance performances depending on their chemical nature. UV-photopolymerization is a fast and low-cost method to achieve technical fabrics with specific desired properties.

Hydrophobization of chitosan films by surface grafting with fluorinated polymer brushes

Chitosan with its surface-properties and biodegradability is a promising biomaterial for green packaging applications. Till now, this application is still limited due to chitosan high sensitivity to water. Some existing studies deal with the incorporation of hydrophobic additives to enhance water-proof performances of chitosan films. As these additives may impair the film properties, our study focuses on chitosan efficient hydrophobization by means of simple and successful surface grafting reactions. Chitosan films prepared by solvent casting were modified by means of surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom radical polymerization (SI-ARGET-ATRP) of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) followed by esterification reaction with fluorinated acyl compound. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) highlighted the surface chemical changes after each step. Surface properties were investigated by contact angle measurements and surface energy calculations. Hydrophobic surfaces with low surface energy and good water-repellent properties were obtained using a simple handling polymerization procedure. This is the first study in applying ARGET ATRP to prepare hydrophobic biopolymer films offering potential applications in packaging.
