Fluorinated Polyimide Tunneling Layer for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Photovoltaics

Despite the remarkable progress of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), challenges remain in terms of finding effective and viable strategies to enhance their long-term stability while maintaining high efficiency. In this study, a new insulating and hydrophobic fluorinated polyimide (FPI: 6FDA-6FAPB) was used as the interface layer between the perovskite layer and the hole transport layer (HTL) in PSCs. The functional groups of FPI play a pivotal role in passivating interface defects within the device. Due to its high work function, FPI demonstrates field-effect passivation (FEP) capabilities as an interface layer, effectively mitigating non-radiative recombination at the interface. Notably, the FPI insulating interface layer does not impede carrier transmission at the interface, which is attributed to the presence of hole tunneling effects. The optimized PSCs achieve an outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.61 % and demonstrate excellent stability, showcasing the efficacy of FPI in enhancing device performance and reliability.

Exploring the Impact of Blend and Graft of Quinoline Derivative in Low-Temperature Curable Polyimides

The utilization of accelerators has been a common approach to prepare low-temperature curable polyimide (PI). However, the accelerators have gradually fallen out of favor because of their excessive dosages and negative effect on the properties of PI. In this work, a new strategy of introducing accelerators by grafting to eliminate these disadvantages is presented. A novel quinoline derivative named 6-([1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-4-chloroquinoline (NQL) is designed for this purpose, and an ultralow dosage of only 2.5 mol% is sufficient to prepare low-temperature curable PI. The favorable low-temperature curing effect of NQL is attributed to its strong alkalinity (pKa = 18.47) and electron-donating ability. At a curing temperature of 200 °C, the PI with 2.5 mol% NQL showed outstanding properties (Young's modulus of 5.73 GPa, elongation of 37.3%, tensile strength of 237 MPa, and coefficient of thermal expansion of 16 ppm K-1 ). In particular, NQL can even lower the curing temperature to 180 °C and the ultralow temperature curable PI film still retains excellent properties. These results demonstrate that introducing low-temperature curable accelerators by partial grafting instead of blending is a promising way to furnish low-temperature curable PI, and provide insights into the preparation of polyimide with high performance in advanced packaging.

New Fluorine-Containing Diamine Monomers for Potentially Improved Polyimides

Two new fluorine-containing diamine monomers were designed with the goal of reducing charge transfer complex (CTC) interactions between neighboring chains in polyimides (i.e., high transparency/low color) while hopefully maintaining the well-known thermal stability and flexibility generally associated with polyimides. The proposed diamines have been prepared through (1) the functionalization of 1,3-bis[(pentafluorobenzyl)oxy]benzene with 4-aminophenol and (2) the addition of 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzotrifluoride to 4,4'-bicyclohexanol followed by reduction of the resulting dinitro compound. The new compounds have been characterized by multinuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy and high-resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction on the new diamine prepared from 4,4'-bicyclohexanol. Not only was the structure of the proposed new diamine confirmed, but another interesting example of hydrogen bonding between an N-H proton and the π-system of an aromatic ring was observed and documented. Initial polymerizations have been carried out via the two-step imidization process.

The Synergistic Effect of Triazine and Phosphaphenanthrene Units on the Physico-Chemical Behavior of Polyimides

With the aim to develop polymers with appealing, multifunctional characteristics, a series of polyimides were designed by anchoring 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene 10-oxide (DOPO) units on the main polymer chains containing 1,3,5-triazine and several flexible moieties, such as ether, hexafluoroisopropylidene, or isopropylidene. A detailed study was conducted to establish structure-property correlations, with a focus on the synergistic effectiveness of triazine and DOPO moieties on the overall features of polyimides. The results evidenced good solubility of the polymers in organic solvents, their amorphous nature with short-range regular-packed polymer chains, and high thermal stability with no glass transition temperature below 300 °C. Spectrophotometric measurements revealed the existence of a strong charge transfer complex in these polymers that led to a "black" appearance, which generated broad absorption bands spanning on the overall visible range. Nevertheless, these polymers displayed green light emission associated with 1,3,5-triazine emitter. The electrochemical characteristics of the polyimides in solid state demonstrated their strong n-type doping character induced by three different structural elements with electron-acceptance capability. The useful properties of these polyimides, including optical, thermal, electrochemical, aesthetics, and opaqueness, endow them with several possible applications in the microelectronic field, such as protecting layers for the inner circuits against UV light deterioration.

Preparation of crystalline polyimide nanofibers via solution crystallization

Two crystalline polyimide nanofibers (PINFs) with different morphologies were prepared. The crystalline unit cells of the aromatic PI crystals and the crystal morphologies of the fabricated PINFs were examined. PINF-I (lengths = 305 ± 152 nm and diameters = 12 ± 2 nm) was crystallized from crystalline PI dissolved in a concentrated sulfuric acid solution. The resulting PINF-I was isolated from this solution, and it did not aggregate in water. PINF-II with diameters of 105 ± 99 nm was prepared by dispersing PINF-I in a mixed water and t-butanol (TBA) solution (water:TBA = 4:1), followed by freeze-drying. Then, the PINF-II was heated to enhance its crystallinity. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies of the heat-treated PINF-II revealed a PI crystalline unit cell [orthorhombic, a = 1.21 nm, b = 0.88 nm, and c = 2.23 nm (molecular chain axis direction)]. The crystal structure of the heat-treated PINF-II suggested that highly crystalline PINFs were fabricated in which the PI molecular chains were oriented along the direction of the fiber lengths.

Redox-active polyimides for energy conversion and storage: from synthesis to application

As the demand for next-generation electronics is increasing, organic and polymer-based semiconductors are in the spotlight as suitable materials owing to their tailorable structures along with flexible properties. Especially, polyimide (PI) has been widely utilised in electronics because of its outstanding mechanical and thermal properties and chemical resistance originating from its crystallinity, conjugated structure and π-π interactions. PI has recently been receiving more attention in the energy storage and conversion fields due to its unique redox activity and charge transfer complex structure. In this review, we focus on the design of PI structures with improved electrochemical and photocatalytic activities for use as redox-active materials in photo- and electrocatalysts, batteries and supercapacitors. We anticipate that this review will offer insight into the utilisation of redox-active PI-based polymeric materials for the development of future electronics.

Simultaneously Improving the Optical, Dielectric, and Solubility Properties of Fluorene-Based Polyimide with Silyl Ether Side Groups

Three fluorene-based polyimides with silyl ether groups (Si-PIs) were successfully synthesized by a simple and efficient silicon etherification reaction of hydroxyl-containing polyimides (OH-PIs) and tert-butylchlorodiphenylsilane (TBDPSCl), and their structures were confirmed by ¹H NMR and IR spectra. The bulky nonpolar tert-butyldiphenylsilyl (TBDPS) side groups in the modified PI unit instead of the strong electron donor -OH group is conducive to decreasing electronic conjugation and charge transfer (CT) interaction along the PI chain. Accordingly, the optical, dielectric, and solubility properties of the modified Si-PI films are simultaneously improved compared with the precursor OH-PI films. The modified Si-PI films demonstrate a meaningful enhancement in the transmittances at a wavelength of 400 nm (T ₄₀₀ ) to 74-81% from 42 to 55% of OH-PI films and the regeneration of fluorescence characteristics. The dielectric constant and loss of Si-PI films are also obviously reduced to 2.63-2.75 and 0.0024-0.0091 at 1 kHz from 4.19 to 4.78 and 0.0173-0.0295 of OH-PI films, respectively, due to substituted with the bulky nonpolar TBDPS groups to increase the free volume and hydrophobicity of Si-PI films. The solubility of Si-PIs in low- or nonpolar solvents (such as CHCl₃, CH₂Cl₂, acetone, and toluene) is significantly improved. Furthermore, Si-PI films still maintain relatively good thermal properties with the 5% weight loss temperature (T _5% ) in the range 470-491 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere and the glass transition temperature (T _g ) in the range 245-308 °C.

Study on Chemical Graft Structure Modification and Mechanical Properties of Photocured Polyimide

The great challenge facing additive manufacturing is that the available high-performance 3D printing materials can hardly keep up with the rapid development of new additive manufacturing technology. Then, the commercial resins available in the market have some problems, such as poor thermal stability, insufficient light-curing degree, and large shrinkage after curing, which need to be solved urgently. This study reports a photocurable polyimide ink for digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing to prepare controllable 3D structures with high thermal stability, low shrinkage, and excellent comprehensive properties. In this study, pyromellitic dianhydride and diaminodiphenyl ether, the Kapton polyimide with the highest performance synthesized so far, were selected as raw materials, and 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxylic acid) hexafluoropropane dianhydride containing fluorine was introduced to modify the branched-chain structure. The polyimide was prepared by one-step imidization, and then the graft with photocurable double bonds and certain functions was grafted by reaction of glycidyl methacrylate with phenolic hydroxyl groups. In this work, the solubility of the synthesized oligomer polyimide in organic solvents was greatly increased by combining three methods, thereby allowing the formation of ink for photocuring 3D printing, and the ink can be stacked to form low-shrinkage polyimide with complex controllable shape. Polyimide printed by DLP can produce complex structures with good mechanical character and thermal stability and small shrinkage. Therefore, the polyimide prepared in this study is considered to be a resin of great commercial possibility. In addition, due to its properties, it has important development potential in some fields with high demand for thermal stability, such as high-temperature cooling valves, aerospace, and other fields.

Soluble Poly(amide-imide)s from Diamide–Diamine Monomer with Trifluoromethyl Groups

A series of soluble aromatic poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) was prepared from a new diamide–diamine monomer having biphenyl units with two CF₃ groups. The diamide–diamine monomer was polymerized with 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine and pyromelltic dianhydride through an imidization reaction to prepare PAIs with a controlled imide/amide bond ratio in the main chains. While the PAIs with the highest imide bond content showed a limited solubility, other PAIs were soluble in polar organic solvents and can be solution-cast into flexible freestanding films. All PAIs exhibited high thermal stability with 5% weight loss temperature (T_d5) from 464 to 497 °C in air, and no appearance of glass transition up to 400 °C. Notably, the linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) value of the PAI films was linearly decreased with the imide bond content and varied from 44.8 to 7.8 ppm/°C.

Highly Transparent Aromatic Polyamides from Unsymmetrical Diamine with Trifluoromethyl Groups

Soluble and transparent wholly aromatic polyamides (PAs) were synthesized from an unsymmetrical diamine monomer having trifluoromethyl (CF₃) groups, 4-(4′-aminophenoxy)-3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)aniline. The monomer was polymerized with several dicarboxylic acid monomers via the Yamazaki–Higashi polycondensation method. All of the synthesized polyamides have an amorphous morphology, and they are soluble in many polar organic solvents at room temperature. Flexible and transparent films of the polyamides were prepared by solution casting and these polymer films show good optical transparencies with cut-off wavelengths of 337–367 nm and transparencies of 88%–90% at 550 nm. In addition, all the polymers were thermally stable over 400 °C and exhibited glass transition temperatures (T_g) higher than 300 °C. Unsymmetrically inserted trifluoromethyl groups on polyamides improves the solubility as well as the transparency of the polymers while maintaining good thermal properties. They also showed low refractive indices around 1.5333~1.5833 at 633 nm owing to the existence of low polarizable trifluoromethyl groups.

Sulfonated Polyimide Membranes Derived from a Novel Sulfonated Diamine with Pendant Benzenesulfonic Acid for Fuel Cells

For improving the hydrolytic stability of sulfonated polyimides consisting of five membered anhydrides, novel sulfonated polyimides (NSPIs) were prepared via polymerization of 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), with a novel diamine monomer with a pendant sulfonic acid group and 4,4-oxydianiline. Water uptake of this NSPI with an excellent film-forming ability was almost equal to that of Nafion® 117, while their ion exchange capacity (IEC) was 22% higher than Nafion® 117. The loss in weight decreased by 53% and loss in IEC decreased by 66% compared to that of Nafion® 117; both were used to quantitatively measure hydrolytic stability, and radical oxidative stability also increased by 75% when compared with Nafion® 117. Mechanically, this NSPI was superior, and its proton conductivity was higher than Nafion® 117 at elevated temperatures. All these improvements were due to the introduction of this pendant group. Taken together, we herein report a promising renewable energy source based on SPIs capable of displaying proton conductivity and enhanced hydrophilicity.

Novel Polyimide/Copper-Nickel Ferrite Composites with Tunable Magnetic and Dielectric Properties

Heat-resistant magnetic polymer composites were prepared by incorporating cerium-doped copper-nickel ferrite particles, having the general formula Ni_1-xCu_xFe_1.92Ce_0.08O₄ (x: 0.0, 0.3, 0.6, 1.0), into a polyimide matrix. The effects of particle type and concentration on the thermal, magnetic, and electrical properties of the resulting composites were investigated. The samples were characterized by FTIR, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, vibrating sample magnetometer, and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The composites exhibited high thermal stability, having initial decomposition temperatures between 495 and 509 °C. Saturation magnetization (M_s), magnetic remanence (M_r), and coercivity (H_c) were found in range of 2.37–10.90 emu g⁻¹, 0.45–2.84 emu g⁻¹, and 32–244 Oe, respectively. The study of dielectric properties revealed dielectric constant values of 3.0–4.3 and low dielectric losses of 0.016–0.197 at room temperature and a frequency of 1 Hz.

The effects of long and bulky aromatic pendent groups with flexible linkages on the thermal, mechanical and electrical properties of the polyimides and their nanocomposites with functionalized silica

A novel diamine bis(4-aminophenyl)bis{3,4[(4-(8-quinolyloxymethyl carbonyl)]}methane, containing two long/bulky aromatic pendent chains was synthesized by incorporating aromatic and hetero aromatic groups with flexible linkages. Flexible, stretchable, thermally stable and processable polyimides were prepared by reacting this newly synthesized diamine with commercial tetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides like 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetra carboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA) and 4,4'-(4,4'-isopropylidenediphenoxy)diphthalic Anhydride (BPADA). Nanocomposites of polyimides were prepared using aromatic amine functionalized silica as a filler by solution casting method. The current work investigates the effects of incorporating long/bulky aromatic side chains and flexible linkages on the thermal, mechanical, electrical and optical properties of the polyimides and nanocomposites. The polyimides showed good thermal stability (T 10% = 364 & 388), high flame resistance, low glass transition temperatures (T g = 130 °C & 156 °C), very low dielectric constants (2.5 & 2.8 at 1 MHz) and good optical transparency. The neat polyimides displayed good elongation at break (133-155%) but possessed low tensile strength. The chemically imidized polyimides showed good solubility in low and high boiling solvents. Nanocomposites of polyimides based on aromatic amine functionalized silica exhibited enhanced properties with T 10% values varying between 409-482 °C, T g between 165-280 °C and higher dielectric constants (3-5.7 at 1 MHz).

Green-Solvent-Processed Fibrous Membranes with Water/Oil/Dust-Resistant and Breathable Performances for Protective Textiles

Waterproof and breathable membranes (WBMs) are highly demanded worldwide due to their promising applications in outdoor protective clothing, medical hygiene, and electronic devices. However, the design of such materials integrated with environmental friendliness and high functionality has been considered a long-standing challenge. Herein, we report the green-solvent-processed polyamide fibrous membranes with amphiphobicity and bonding structure via ethanol-based electrospinning and water-based impregnating techniques, endowing the fibrous membranes with outstanding water/oil/dust-resistant and good breathable properties. The developed green smart fibrous membranes exhibit integrated properties with robust water and oil intrusion pressures of 101.2 and 32.4 kPa, respectively, excellent dust removal efficiency of above 99.9%, good water vapor transmission rate of 11.2 kg m^-2 d^-1, air permeability of 2.6 mm s^-1, tensile strength of 15.6 MPa, and strong toughness of 22.8 MJ m^-3, enabling the membranes to protect human beings and electronic devices effectively. This work may shed light on designing the next generation green smart fibrous WBMs for protective textiles.

Tunable Crystalline Phases in UV-Curable PEG-Grafted Ladder-Structured Silsesquioxane/Polyimide Composites

A series of UV-curable hybrid composite blends containing a carboxylic acid functionalized polyimidewith varying amounts of high molecular weight (~1 K) PEG-grafted ladder-structured polysilsesquioxanes copolymerized with methacryl groups were fabricated and their structural, thermal, mechanical, and surface properties characterized. At a composite weight ratio of polyimide above 50 wt.%, a stark shift from amorphous to crystalline polyethylene glycol (PEG) phases were observed, accompanied by a drastic increase in both surface moduli and brittleness index. Moreover, fabricated composites were shown to have a wide range water contact angle, 9.8°-73.8°, attesting to the tunable surface properties of these amphiphilic hybrid polymer composites. The enhanced mechanical properties, combined with the utility of tunable surface hydrophilicity allows for the possible use of these hybrid polymer composites to be utilized as photosensitive polyimide negative photoresists for a myriad of semiconductor patterning processes.

Synthesis and properties of colorless polyamide films with high thermal resistance and dimensional stability

Polyamides (PAs) based on terephthaloyl chloride and a series of aromatic diamines were synthesized; PA films were prepared by solution casting without mechanical stretching to produce high-performance films with good optical transparency and dimensional stability. The PA films displayed high heat resistance with glass transition temperatures ( Tg) of 342–399°C. Good mechanical properties were obtained with tensile modulus and strength up to 5.38 GPa and 195.4 MPa, respectively. Coefficient of thermal expansion of the as-cast PA films achieved to an ultralow value of 8.3 ppm °C−1 and could be tailored in a wide range as a function of the macromolecular composition. The series of PA films showed a transparent and colorless feature, with the cutoff wavelength in the range of 355–365 nm. The data were discussed from the perspective of structure–property relationship, may give helpful knowledge for the topic of PA chemistry, and this method could provide an alternative for the production of high-performance colorless polymer films.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of high thermal stability and colourless polyimides containing pyridine

A novel aromatic diamine containing pyridyl side group, 4-pyridine-4,4-bis(3,5-dimethyl-5-aminophenyl)methane (PyDPM), was successfully synthesized via electrophilic substitution reaction. The polyimides (PIs) containing pyridine were obtained via the microwave-assisted one-step polycondensation of the PyDPM with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), 3,3',4,4'-diphenylether tetracarboxylic dianhydride (ODPA) and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). Contrarily to the reported similar PIs, these PIs exhibit much higher thermal stability or heat resistance, i.e. high glass transition temperatures (T gs) in the range of 358-473°C, and the decomposition temperatures at 5% weight loss over 476°C under nitrogen. They can afford flexible and strong films with tensile strength of 82.1-93.3 MPa, elongation at break of 3.7%-15.2%, and Young's modulus of 3.3-3.8 GPa. Furthermore, The PI films exhibit good optical transparency with the cut-off wavelength at 313-366 nm and transmittance higher than 73% at 450 nm. The excellent thermal and optical transmittance can be attributed to synthesis method and the introduction of pyridine rings and ortho-methyl groups. The inherent viscosities of PIs via one-step method were found to be 0.58-1.12 dl g-1 in DMAc, much higher than those via two-step method. These results indicate these PIs could be potential candidates for optical substrates of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Soluble Polyimides Bearing (cis, trans)-Hydrogenated Bisphenol A and (trans, trans)-Hydrogenated Bisphenol A Moieties: Synthesis, Properties and the Conformational Effect

In this work, hydrogenated bisphenol A (HBPA) based dinitro mixed isomers (1a′ and 1a) were synthesized and separated via vacuum distillation under the monitor of DSC and ¹H NMR. Corresponding diamines (2a′ and 2a) were separately polycondensed with five commercial dianhydrides via a two-step thermal imidization to obtain PI-(1′-5′) and PI-(1-5). All the polyimides could afford flexible, tough, and transparent films, and most of them were readily soluble not only in common polar solvents like DMAc, but also in low boiling point solvents such as chloroform. ¹H NMR spectra of the polyimides demonstrated that HBPA moiety showed no conformation changes during the preparation of polymers. For a given dianhydride, PI-(1-5) exhibited better thermal stability than that of PI-(1′-5′), this can be attributed that the equatorial, equatorial C–O in PI-(1-5) promoted denser and more regular molecular chain stacking, as can be evidenced by the WAXD and geometric optimization results. Additionally, when the dianhydride was ODPA, BPADA or 6FDA, no apparent difference was found in either the transmittance or solubility between two series of polyimides, which could be attributed that twisted and flexible ether linkages, as well as bulky substituents, led to the “already weakened” inter- and intramolecular CT interaction and cohesive force. However, when it came to rigid and stiff dianhydride, e.g., BPDA, PI-3′ took an obvious advantage over PI-3 in transmittance and solubility, which was possibly owed to the larger molecular chain d-spacing imparted by equatorial, axial C–O. An overall investigation of PI-(1′-5′) and PI-(1-5) on aspects of thermal, mechanical, morphological, soluble and optical performance values was carried out, and the conformation effects of HBPA isomers on the properties of two series of polyimides were discussed in detail.

Effect of charge transfer and chain stacking on the optical and thermal properties of polyimides derived from sulfone and amide-containing dianhydride

To study the effect of charge transfer and chain stacking on the optical and thermal properties, a group of polyimides (PIs) were prepared from various diamines and dianhydrides containing sulfone, amide, and/or trifluoromethyl groups. Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, thermomechanical analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis were employed to study the properties of PIs. PIs containing sulfone and amide groups exhibited transmittance varying from 2.9% to 44.9% at 400 nm with good thermal stabilities of 5% weight loss in nitrogen at 455–466°C. The coefficient of thermal expansion values were 37.7–49.8 ppm/°C and glass transition temperatures were 261–299°C. The improved optical properties are owing to incorporation of amide group that decreases the electron-acceptability and sulfone group that distorts the chains, inhibiting the dense chain stacking. There is a trade-off relationship between the optical property and thermal property.
