Synthesis of Imidazolium based PILs and Investigation of Their Blend Membranes for Gas Separation

Polymeric (ionic liquid) (PIL) copolymers bearing cationic imidazolium pendants and polar acrylic acid groups (P(VBCImY-co-AA_x)), which both favor the interaction with CO₂ molecules, have been synthesized and blended with film forming, high glass transition temperature aromatic polyether-based pyridinium PILs (PILPyr). The blend membranes based on the above combination have been prepared and characterized in respect to their thermal and morphological behavior as well as to their gas separation properties. The used copolymers and blends showed a wide range of glass transition temperatures from 32 to 286 °C, while blends exhibited two phase morphology despite the presence of polar groups in the blend components that could participate in specific interactions. Finally, the membranes were studied in terms of their gas separation behavior. It revealed that blend composition, counter anion type and acrylic acid molar percentage affect the gas separation properties. In particular, PILPyr-TFSI/P(VBCImTFSI-co-AA₂₀) blend with 80/20 composition shows CO₂ permeability of 7.00 Barrer and quite high selectivity of 103 for the CO₂/CH₄ gas pair. Even higher CO₂/CH_4. selectivity of 154 was achieved for PILPyr-BF₄/P(VBCImBF₄-co-AA₁₀) blend with composition 70/30.

Micellization of poly(2-vinylpyrridine)-b-poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate) (P2VP-b-PCHMA) block copolymers and their interpolymer complex formation in non-aqueous medium

HYPOTHESIS

The interpolymer complex formation between poly(vinylpyridine)-based polymers with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), in aqueous or organic medium, is driven by the hydrogen-bonding complexation. Well-defined nanostructures, with specific practical applications, may be obtained by taking advantage of such non-covalent interactions.

EXPERIMENTS

Poly(2-vinylpyridine)-b-poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate) (P2VP-b-PCHMA) and poly(2-vinylpyridine)-b-poly(t-butyl methacrylate)-b-poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate) (P2VP-b-PtBuMA-b-PCHMA) copolymers were synthesized by sequential anionic polymerization. Their micellar characteristics were examined as a function of their molecular characteristics in methylcyclohexane and toluene respectively, as cycloaliphatic and aromatic solvents for the selective solubilization of the PCHMA sequence. The size of interpolymer complexes was determined by DLS, in 1,4 dioxane, and their structural composition was characterized by ¹H NMR.

FINDINGS

The scaling relationship between the molecular composition and the micellar characteristics, such as particle size and aggregation number, could be established for the PCHMA-based copolymers in methylcyclohexane. It was further demonstrated that controlled micellization in 1,4 dioxane, as a non-selective organic solvent, could be achieved by hydrogen bond type interpolymer complex formation between P2VP-b-PCHMA and PAA-b-PCHMA under stoichiometric P2VP/PAA conditions. Finally, the size of the PCHMA-b-PAA/P2VP block copolymer/homopolymer complexes as well as of the PCHMA-b-PAA/PCHMA-b-P2VP block copolymer/block copolymer complexes was correlated with the molecular characteristics of the copolymers.

Nanopatterned polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) surfaces to modulate cell-material interaction

In this work we explore the effect of surface nanoarchitecture of polystyrene (PS) and polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) diblock copolymer films on cell viability. PS and PS-b-PAA have been nanopatterned at temperatures of 110, 120 and 140°C using nanoporous aluminium oxide membranes (AAO) as a template. Surface architecture strongly depends on the infiltration temperature and the nature of the infiltrated polymer. High patterning temperatures yield hollow fibre shape architecture at the nanoscale level, which substantially modifies the surface hydrophobicity of the resulting materials. Up to date very scarce reports could be found in the literature dealing with the interaction of microstructured/nanostructured polymeric surfaces with cancer cells. Therefore, MCF-7 breast cancer cells have been selected as a model to conduct cell viability assays. The findings reveal that the fine-tuning of the surface nanoarchitecture contributes to the modification of its biocompatibility. Overall, this study highlights the potential of AAO membranes to obtain well-defined tailored morphologies at nanoscale level and its importance to develop novel soft functional surfaces to be used in the biomedical field.
