Abstract
Many dietary supplements commonly used by bodybuilders and athletes carry thrombogenic risks, potentially leading to life-threatening conditions like arterial and venous thrombosis by either elevating testosterone levels or directly interfering with homeostasis. Increased awareness and further research are crucial for consumer safety and supplement regulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sports practice, particularly eccentric exercises, induces significant muscular changes, including muscle fiber injuries, strength loss, pain, and increased permeability of the muscle membrane. The duration of muscle recovery depends on factors such as exercise intensity and the specific muscle groups engaged. The inflammatory response plays a crucial role in muscle regeneration, involving various cell types. Curcumin, especially when its stability is enhanced through encapsulation, exhibits potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Supplementing with curcumin can reduce muscle damage and inflammation caused by eccentric exercise, making it a potential remedy for athletes. OBJECTIVE The objective of this systematic review is to assess the scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of curcumin in reducing muscle damage caused by sports. METHODS A structured search in SCOPUS, Medline, and Web of Science databases was conducted in March 2023, including all available articles. The strategy involved selecting English articles without time constraints, using the search terms "curcumin" AND "Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage" (ALL(curcumin AND "Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage")). Titles and abstracts were screened to assess eligibility. Studies were chosen based on PICOS criteria, and quality was evaluated using the reliable PEDro scale. The eligibility criteria included adults without any diagnosed diseases who regularly exercise (at least three times per week) and follow a consistent pattern of curcumin intake before, during, or after exercise. RESULTS The comprehensive search identified 11 relevant studies investigating the effects of curcumin supplementation in sport-simulated interventions. These studies suggest that curcumin intake may help reduce muscle symptoms associated with eccentric exercises, thereby improving pain perception. Effective use of curcumin depends on factors such as dosage, bioavailability, and timing, with post-exercise ingestion appearing to be more beneficial. CONCLUSIONS Curcumin demonstrates a significant potential to relieve muscle-related symptoms, especially delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) that arises from eccentric exercises, thus potentially improving the well-being of those who are trained. It also appears to have the capability to lower biomarkers associated with inflammation and boost antioxidant levels. Nevertheless, for future studies, the bioavailability of curcumin must be considered, as it is a key factor in its efficacy.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to elucidate the dose-dependent effect of coenzyme Q10 supplementation (CoQ10) on exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), physical performance, and oxidative stress in adults. METHODS A systematic search was conducted through PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science databases up to August 2023, focusing on randomized control trials (RCTs) that investigated the effects of CoQ10 supplementation on EIMD recovery, physical performance and oxidative stress mitigation in adults. The weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95 % confidence interval (95 %CI) were estimated using the random-effects model. RESULTS The meta-analysis incorporated 28 RCTs, encompassing 830 subjects. CoQ10 supplementation significantly decreased creatine kinase (CK) (WMD: -50.64 IU/L; 95 %CI: -74.75, -26.53, P < 0.001), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (WMD: -52.10 IU/L; 95 %CI: -74.01, -30.19, P < 0.001), myoglobin (Mb) (WMD: -21.77 ng/ml; 95 %CI: -32.59, -10.94, P < 0.001), and Malondialdehyde (MDA) (WMD: -0.73 μmol/l; 95 %CI: -1.26, -0.20, P = 0.007) levels. No significant alteration in total antioxidant capacity was observed post-CoQ10 treatment. Each 100 mg/day increase in CoQ10 supplementation was correlated with a significant reduction in CK (MD: -23.07 IU/L, 95 %CI: -34.27, -11.86), LDH (WMD: -27.21 IU/L, 95 %CI: -28.23, -14.32), Mb (MD: -7.09 ng/ml; 95 %CI: -11.35, -2.83) and MDA (WMD: -0.17 μmol/l, 95 %CI: -0.29, -0.05) serum levels. Using SMD analysis, "very large" effects on LDH and "moderate" effects on CK and MDA were noted, albeit nonsignificant for other outcomes. CONCLUSION CoQ10 supplementation may be effective in reducing biomarkers of EIMD and oxidative stress in adults. Nevertheless, given the preponderance of studies conducted in Asia, the generalizability of these findings warrants caution. Further RCTs, particularly in non-Asian populations with large sample sizes and extended supplementation durations, are essential to substantiate these observations.

Abstract
Background: Curcumin is a polyphenol derived from the Curcuma longa L (turmeric) plant and has gained attention through its perceived anti-inflammatory characteristics. The potential interaction with exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) has led to investigation of curcumin as a post-exercise strategy that may have the potential to lessen acute reductions in functional strength (FS) following physical activity. Aim: The purpose of this review is to assess the evidence examining curcumin in relation to four outcome measures: FS, EIMD, DOMS and inflammation. Methods: A Medline, SPORTDiscus and CINAHL database search was undertaken with no publication date limit. Sixteen papers met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Three meta-analyses were completed for EIMD, DOMS and inflammation, respectively, with FS being excluded due to limited research. Results: Effect sizes were as follows: EIMD (0.15, -0.12, -0.04, -0.2 and -0.61 corresponding to 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h post-exercise, respectively), DOMS (-0.64, -0.33, 0.06, -0.53 and -1.16 corresponding to 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h post-exercise, respectively) and inflammation (-0.10, 0.26, 0.15 and 0.26 corresponding to 0, 24, 48 and 72 h post-exercise, respectively). A 96 h post-exercise inflammation meta-analysis was not conducted due to limited data. Conclusion: No effect sizes were statistically significant for EIMD (p = 0.644, 0.739, 0.893, 0.601 and 0.134), DOMS (p = 0.054, 0.092, 0.908, 0.119 and 0.074) and inflammation (p = 0.729, 0.603, 0.611 and 0.396). Further research is needed to thoroughly examine whether an effect exists.

Abstract
Purpose Evidence suggests that turmeric intake can improve antioxidant defense, blood pressure (BP), ageing and gut microbiota. The effects of turmeric concentrate (curcumin) intake on cardiovascular risk factors and exercise induced oxidative stress were investigated. Methods A randomized placebo-controlled study was performed to assess the effects of turmeric extract in healthy volunteers before and after a 30 min exercise bout. Participants (n=22) were given either turmeric concentrate or placebo supplements. Anthropometry, BP, pulse wave velocity (PWV), biomarkers of oxidative stress, perceived exertion and lipid peroxidation were assessed. Results In the turmeric group, the expected BP response to exercise following turmeric was blunted and the increase was not significant compared to basal values followed by a decrease in final BP and PWV values. There were no significant differences in all baseline parameters between the placebo and the curcumin groups (P>0.05). A significant increase was observed in urinary antioxidant power (P=0.031) and total polyphenol levels (P=0.022) post turmeric intervention. The distance ran by the participants taking turmeric was significantly longer (P=0.005) compared to basal value. Those who took the placebo did not show significant changes. Conclusion Our study suggests that turmeric concentrate intake can reduce BP and improve antioxidant, anti-inflammatory status and arterial compliance. Turmeric may improve exercise performance and ameliorates oxidative stress. Larger studies are warranted to validate these findings and test more cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
Degenerative myelopathy is an inherited, progressive, neurodegenerative disorder affecting the spinal cord of dogs. There is no treatment of the disease. Physical rehabilitation is the only intervention that slows progression and prolongs quality of life. Further studies are needed to develop advanced treatment options and to better characterize the use of complementary therapeutic modalities in palliative care for these patients.

Abstract
Objective: Kinesio taping (KT) and vibration treatment (VT) can alleviate delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) to some extent. However, the literature reports on the difference between the two treatments, and whether a joint intervention (JI) works better than single treatments remains unknown. This study compares the effects of KT, VT and JI on DOMS in college students. Methods: A total of 88 college students were randomly divided into the KT (KTG, n = 21), VT (VTG, n = 22), JI (JIG, n = 23) and control (CG, n = 22) groups. All subjects underwent DOMS moulding. The baseline; immediate and 24, 48 and 72 h visual analogue scale (VAS) scores and knee extensor maximum isometric voluntary contraction (MIVC) were determined. Results: The intergroup comparison showed the following results. 1) The VAS scores of the four groups peaked at 24 h and gradually decreased. The immediate, 24 h and 48 h VAS scores followed the order: JIG > KTG and VTG > CG. The 72 h VAS score followed the order: KTG < VTG < JIG < CG. 2) The knee extension MIVC in the four groups was lowest at 24 h and then gradually increased. JIG had larger immediate MIVC than CG. KTG, VTG and JIG had larger 24 h MIVC than CG. JIG had larger 48 h MIVC than KTG and CG. Conclusion: KT and VT can reduce muscle pain and strength loss caused by DOMS to varying degrees. VT is better than KT in improving pain. The combined intervention worked better than single interventions.

Abstract
Introduction High-intensity exercise causes oxidative stress, muscle soreness, and muscle fatigue, leading to reduced exercise performance. Curcumin possesses antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties and thus alleviates postexercise damage. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of curcumin on athletes' postexercise recovery. Methods A non-randomized prospective cohort investigation was done. We recruited middle and high school athletes engaged in wrestling, soccer, and soft tennis. During the 12-week daily exercise training, the participants were assigned to receive curcumin supplementation (curcumin group) or not (control group). Body composition, exercise performance, inflammatory factors, muscle fatigue, and muscle soreness were recorded at the baseline and end of the study. We used the Mann-Whitney U test to compare the participants' demographics, such as age, height, weight, and training years. The Wilcoxon test was used to compare the differences between the groups before and after curcumin supplementation. Results Of 28 participants (21 men and 7 women, with a mean age of 17 years), 13 were in the curcumin group and 15 in the control group. A significant decrease in muscle fatigue and muscle soreness scores was observed in the curcumin group after 12 weeks. Moreover, a significant decrease in the 8-hydroxy-2 deoxyguanosine level and a significant increase in basic metabolic rate and fat-free mass were observed in the curcumin group. Conclusion Curcumin can reduce muscle fatigue and soreness after exercise, indicating its potential to alleviate postexercise damage. It could be considered to cooperate with nutritional supplements in regular training in adolescent athletes.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the effects of acute curcumin (CURC) supplementation on recovery from a soccer match in male professional players. METHODS In a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover design, 11 players from the under-23 team of an English Premier League club (age 19 [1] y, body mass 79.4 [7.9] kg, height 180.8 [5.7] cm) consumed 500 mg of CURC or a control (medium-chain triglycerides) immediately and 12 and 36 hours after a 90-minute match. Countermovement jump height (CMJ), reactive strength index (RSI), delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS, 0-200 mm), and subjective well-being were measured before and 12, 36, and 60 hours postmatch. Global positioning systems measured external load during matches, and dietary intake was recorded across the testing period. RESULTS External load and dietary intake did not differ between conditions (P ≥ .246). CURC attenuated deficits in CMJ (P ≤ .004) and RSI (P ≤ .001) and reduced DOMS (P ≤ .004) at all postmatch time points (except 60 h post for RSI). The greatest difference between control and CURC was 12 hours post for CMJ (P < .001, 1.91 [4.40] cm, 95% CI, 1.25 to 2.57, g = 0.36) and RSI (P = .003, 0.40 [0.41] AU, 95% CI, 0.17 to 0.63, g = 0.90) and 36 hours post for DOMS (P < .001, 47 [23] mm, 95% CI, -67 to -27, g = 2.12). CONCLUSIONS CURC intake <36 hours after a soccer match attenuated DOMS and muscle function deficits, suggesting that CURC may aid recovery in professional male soccer players.

This study included 161 meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials in 76 articles with 67 unique health outcomes. Data on heterogeneity and publication bias are considered to assess the quality of evidence. Based on the different impact of Zingiberaceae plants/Cur on human health, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Zingiberaceae plants/Cur can mainly improve metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, and some chronic inflammatory diseases, likewise, obviously relief the pain of osteoarthritis and related diseases. Ginger supplements have been shown to improve vomiting during pregnancy and to relieve nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy and surgery. The surgery is any type of surgery, including laparoscopic surgery, gynecological surgery and mixed surgery. Beneficial associations were found with Cur intervention in gastrointestinal, neurological and oral diseases. Zingiberaceae plants/Cur are generally safe and favorable for multiple health outcomes in humans. High-quality research is further needed to prove the observed associations.

Abstract
To quantify the effects of curcumin supplementation on exercise-induced muscle damage, muscle soreness, inflammatory biomarkers, muscle strength, and joint flexibility via assessment of creatine kinase (CK), visual analogue scale (VAS) score, maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), and range of motion (ROM), respectively. Online databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus, were searched up to February 2021. RevMan® software (version 5.3) was used for assessing the risk of bias to assess the quality of studies. The mean differences (MD) and confidence intervals (95% CI) of CK activity (IU/L), VAS score, tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) (pg/ml), interleukin-6 (IL-6) (pg/ml), IL-8 (pg/ml), MVC (nm) and ROM (degree) were pooled using a random- or fixed-effect model. Between-study heterogeneity was assessed using χ-square or I2 statistic. Ten trials met the eligibility criteria and were included in the pooled analysis. Meta-analysis showed that curcumin supplementation significantly reduced serum CK activity [WMD = -65.98 IU/L, 95% CI (-99.53 to -32.44)], muscle soreness [WMD = -0.56, 95% CI (-0.84 to -0.27)], and TNF-α concentration [WMD = -0.22 pg/ml, 95% CI (-0.33 to -0.10)]. Also, curcumin supplementation elicited significant improvements in MVC [WMD = 3.10 nm, 95% CI (1.45-4.75)] and ROM [WMD = 6.49°, 95% CI (3.91-9.07)], although no significant changes in IL-6 and IL-8 levels were found. Dose-response analysis indicated that there is a significant non-linear association between the daily dose and the final effect size regarding TNF-α. Curcumin supplementation may improve some aspects of DOMS, including muscle damage, muscle soreness, inflammation, muscle strength, and joint flexibility. Further, well-designed and high-quality studies with larger sample sizes are needed to ascertain the long-term effects and safety of curcumin supplementation.

Abstract
UNLABELLED A promising direction of osteoarthritis (OA) therapy is currently being considered pharmaceutical compositions of Symptomatic Slow Acting Drugs for Osteoarthritis (SYSADOA), which include type II collagen. A clinical observational study was conducted. OBJECTIVE To Identify the effect of physical activity complex effects with dietary supplements Cartilox (composition: hydrolyzed type II collagen, hyaluronic acid, boswellia, curcumin, piperine) on the severity of pain syndrome in OA knee and hip joint patients, low back pain (LBP); assessment of the need for the appointment of NSAIDs against the background of taking Cartilox. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 60 patients aged 35-65 years, with a confirmed diagnosis of knee and hip OA I-II st., LBP with a slight degree of severity of pain syndrome - 4-5 points on a numerical rating scale (NRS). Patients with comorbid diseases: arterial hypertension (AH), type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-2), hypothyroidism, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (gastrointestinal tract). By randomization, the patients were divided into two groups: Main group (n=30; 54.36±8.57 years) received a complex effect of non-drug therapy (physical therapy complex) with dietary supplements Cartilox 1 sachet per day during or immediately after meals for 1 month, in combination with non-medical therapy (physical therapy complex). And Control group (n=30; 53.03±16.18 years) used only non-medical therapy (physical therapy complex). In both groups, topical NSAIDs were used «on demand». The patients included in the study had imaging data of the spine and joints. Clinical and neurological examination was used: day 0 (Visit 1), Day 14 (Visit 2), Day 30 (Visit 3) of therapy. The dynamics of the condition was assessed: 10-point NRS of pain assessment (at rest, while walking, palpation), functional status of Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), blood pressure (BP) was measured, the dynamics of biochemical parameters (before and after 30 days) of blood glucose, liver enzymes (AST, ALT), weight indicators, registration of adverse events (AEs). A sub-objective assessment (1 to 5 balls) was given to the patient and the physician. RESULTS Against the background of taking Cartilox, a statistically significant decrease in the severity of pain syndrome was noted, an improvement on ODI (to a greater extent in the Main group vs the Control group). In no case has a registered AEs. Changes in the level of biochemical blood parameters (glucose, liver enzymes) and blood pressure levels were not observed. The topical NSAIDs use was observed only in the Control group. CONCLUSION The complex effect of physical exertion with dietary supplements Cartilox can be recommended for patients with unexpressed pain syndrome (4-5 points on the NRS) with LBP and knee and hip OA (I-II st.). The absence of changes in the level of biochemical parameters of blood and blood pressure makes it possible to recommend Cartilox to patients with OA and comorbid diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Omega 3 fatty acids supplementation may have an attenuative effect on exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) through the cell membrane stabilization. The purpose of the present meta-analysis was to evaluate the effects of omega 3 fatty acids supplementation, on indirect blood markers of muscle damage following EIMD in trained and untrained individuals. METHODS Scopus, Medline, and Google scholar systematically searched up to January 2021. The Cochrane Collaboration tool was used for the quality of studies. Random-effects model, weighted mean difference (WMD), and 95% confidence interval (CI) were applied for the overall effect estimating. The heterogeneity between studies was evaluated applying the chi-squared and I2 statistic. RESULTS The outcomes showed a significant effect of omega 3 supplementation on reducing creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and myoglobin (Mb) concentrations. In addition, a subgroup analysis indicated a significant reduction in CK, LDH, and Mb concentrations, based on follow-ups after exercise, studies duration, time of supplementation, and training status. CONCLUSION The current meta-analysis indicated an efficacy of omega 3 in reducing CK, LDH, and Mb serum concentration among healthy individuals, overall and in subgroups analysis. Thus, omega 3 should be considered as a priority EIMD recovery agent in interventions.

Abstract
Canine degenerative myelopathy (DM), recognized as a spontaneous model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is known as a late-onset progressive degenerative disease of the spinal cord. Because of the progressive nature of DM, many dogs are elected to be euthanized, resulting in limited information on the end-stage clinical presentation. We investigated the long-term clinical course from diagnosis to natural death to further deepen our understanding of the entire clinical picture of this disease. Because curcumin was administered in some cases, the therapeutic effect of curcumin on DM was also examined. Forty dogs included in this study were client-owned Pembroke Welsh Corgis with a definitive diagnosis of DM by necropsy and histopathology. Dogs were excluded from this study if they died from another disease or were elected to be euthanized. Information on the long-term clinical symptoms of DM was investigated based on a questionnaire, which was collected from the dog owners. Urinary incontinence and respiratory disorder were observed in most dogs, as was respiratory impairment-correlated death. In contrast, signs consistent with brainstem dysfunction were noticed at the terminal stage in a small portion of dogs. Although further studies with more cases are needed, the results of this study suggest that administration of curcumin is effective in slowing the progression of DM.
