Abstract
Aim The aim of the study was to assess the instrument deformation following the usage of the TruNatomy (Dentsply Sirona, USA) file system in extracted premolars using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Materials and Methods For the present study, 84 extracted mandibular bicuspids were selected. The teeth were divided into two groups: Group 1, TruNatomy (n=42), and Group 2, Hero Shaper (Micro Mega, France) (n=42). The samples were shaped with 0.03 taper to size 36 with TruNatomy instruments and 0.04 taper to size 30 with Hero Shaper instruments. 5 ml of 5.25% Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 2 ml of 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) were used for the final irrigation of root canals. The master apical file was used to instrument seven teeth samples for assessing the safety of the instruments after multiple uses and autoclaving. So, a total of six files per group was used for the analysis of any distortions, cracks or micro-fractures after instrumentation of 42 teeth, at the tip (D0) and 5 mm from the tip (D5) of the rotary file under SEM at 500x magnification. Statistical analysis To determine the significance between the groups, the Mann-Whitney U-test was applied. Results The mean surface wear of the instruments, at the tip (D0) in Group 1 was 1.2857 and in Group 2 was 1.4762. The mean spiral distortion of the instruments, at the tip (D0) in Group 1 was 1.1905 and in Group 2 was 1.4286. A statistically significant difference (P<0.05) was observed between the groups for surface wear and spiral distortion at the tip of the file (D0). There was no significant difference between groups for surface wear and spiral distortion values of the instruments at 5 mm from the tip (D5) (P>0.05). Conclusion The instrument distortion of the rotary file systems analysed was minimal following the biomechanical preparation of seven mandibular bicuspids without root curvature, using a single file. Therefore, both rotary file systems can be considered safe.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the current study is to assess the surface roughness of several recent nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) rotary endodontic instruments, namely: Protaper next (PTN); Hyflex CM (CM); Hyflex EDM (EDM); WaveOne gold (WOG); and trunatomy (TN), before and after application of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) irrigant solution. METHODS In this in vitro study, five recently introduced rotary endodontic instruments of different metallurgical properties and designs were subjected to Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) analysis, and then each file was rotated in 5.25% NaOCl for 15 min., with speed and torque according to manufacturer's instructions. The instruments were then subjected to AFM analysis again. The surface roughness average (Sa) parameter was calculated. Data were analyzed by Paired T test, One-way ANOVA and Tukey tests. RESULTS There was a statistically significant decrease in the surface roughness of all rotary endodontic instruments after immersion in irrigants (P ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION The new TN and PTN instruments showed the least surface roughness. All tested Ni-Ti rotary endodontic instruments after irrigants exposure showed a varying increase in surface roughness.

Abstract
The present study seeks to describe a novel digital measurement technique for analyzing the wear volume of controlled memory (CM)-wire NiTi alloy endodontic reciprocating files after clinical use. Material and Methods: Ten CM-wire NiTi endodontic reciprocating files were randomly used in ten first upper molar teeth within four root canals. The CM-wire NiTi alloy endodontic reciprocating files were subjected to preoperative and postoperative micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scans to obtain accurate digital imaging and communication on medicine (DICOM) digital files, which were segmented using intensity-based thresholding and an exclusive OR (XOR) logical operation (Boolean algebra logical operator) to obtain a mask of the location to localize and quantify the wear volume of the CM-wire NiTi alloy endodontic reciprocating files. Gage repeatability and reproducibility statistical analysis was applied to assess the reproducibility and repeatability of this measurement technique. Results: The analysis showed a repeatability and reproducibility of 0.00% for the digital measurement technique used to analyze the wear volume of CM-wire NiTi alloy endodontic reciprocating files after clinical use. Wear was mostly identified at the tip and cutting edges of the CM-wire NiTi alloy endodontic reciprocating files. Conclusions: This novel digital measurement technique is a repeatable, reproducible, and accurate method of quantifying the wear volume of CM-wire NiTi alloy endodontic reciprocating files after clinical use.

Abstract
To evaluate structural profiles and mechanical behaviour of WaveOne Gold (WOG), Twisted File Adaptive (TFA) and XP-endo shaper (XPS) instruments after root canal preparation. Standardized in vitro shaping was performed in presence of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite. File morphology was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy; X-ray diffraction analysis was performed before and after use along with Raman spectroscopy. Nanoindentation was carried out to characterize surface topography. Ni2+ release was measured at 1, 3, 5 and 7 days. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was done before and after use. After allocating scan line shifts like in WOG, mechanical deformation was shown using first order polynomials. XPS file system showed minimal grooves on surface. SEM of WOG instrument showed scraping surface defects. Hardness varied from 8.11 ± 0.99 GPa in TFA system to 6.7 ± 1.27 GPa and 4.06 ± 4.1 GPa in XPS and WOG. Ni2+ concentration from WOG was 171.2 μg/L. Raman peak at 540-545 cm-1 is attributed to Cr2O3. High resolution of Ti 2p spectrum show distinctive peaks with binding energies dominating in WOG, XPS and TFA file system. XRD exhibited NiTi phases with diffraction peaks. WOG files showed more surface deterioration and less passive layer formation as compared to TFA and XPS systems.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate and compare the surface deformations of different NiTi rotary files after retreatment under scanning electron microscope (SEM). A total of 240 upper central incisor teeth were obturated with vertical compaction technique and divided into 6 groups. Root canals were retreated by ProTaper Next (PTN), Twisted File Adaptive (TFA), Reciproc (RPC), ProTaper Universal Retreatment (PTR), R-Endo and Mtwo-R NiTi rotary systems. The files investigated under SEM at different magnifications and photomicrographs were captured. The photomicrographs were classified and scored. Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests were performed for statistical analyze at 5% significance level. PTR and RPC groups were free of defects like file separation, curving and unwinding but PTN and TFA groups showed 50% file separation. According to the photomicrographs that were captured at high magnification; there were no statistically difference between groups at the coronal thirds of the files (P > 0.05), at the middle third PTN and TFA groups showed statistically more deformation than the other groups (P < 0.05). At the apical third Reciproc was statistically showed less deformation than the other all groups (P < 0.05). Within the limitation of this in vitro study, all NiTi files showed surface deformation in SEM observation after retreatment procedures. There was less deformation in PTR and RPC groups according to other.

Abstract
This in vitro study assessed morphological changes and efficiency of reciprocating files after multiple uses. Sixty standardized Endo Training Blocks and 10 ReciprocR25 files were selected (six blocks for each file). Each file was its own control (before use vs. after each instrumentation). The instruments were used according to the manufacturer's instructions, and scanning electron microscopy was used to observe fatigue cracks, metal strips/metal flash, pitting, fretting, debris, disruption of the cutting edge, and plastic deformations after each instrumentation. The presence of seven wear variables was scored semiquantitatively by viewing micrographs collected before and after use. The prepared areas in resin blocks were calculated and compared by using AutoCAD software. The control group had significantly lower values for all wear variables except fretting and plastic deformation. The presence of fatigue cracks and metal strips/metal flash significantly differed between unused instruments and instruments used four or five times, in all observed sections. The area of instrumented Endo Training Blocks significantly differed in relation to the number of instrument uses. The Reciproc files wore progressively, and repeated use affected their shaping efficiency in simulated canals.

Abstract
This study aimed at evaluating the changes in surface characteristics and NiTi content of reciprocating and rotary instruments after continuous use. Thirty brand-new instruments were assigned to 3 groups (n=10): PNX1 Group - ProTaper Next system - instrument X1; PNX2 Group - ProTaper Next system - instrument X2 and WO Group - WaveOne system - Primary instrument 25.08. The instruments were used to prepare 60 simulated root canals. Analysis of surface characteristics by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chemical analysis of Ni and Ti content by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were performed before and after the first and third use of the instruments. Only WO Group had significant increase in the quantity of defects and deformations after the third use (p<0.05). PNX1 Group had significant decrease in Ni content after the third use, in comparison with the unused instruments (p<0.05). PNX1 Group had no decrease in Ti content throughout the time of use (p>0.05), however, in PNX2 Group, there was significant decrease in the different time interval of analysis (p<0.05). Continuous use promoted increase in defects and deformations only for WaveOne instruments. Chemical composition presented significant changes according to the time of instruments use.

Abstract
Background One of the major innovations in endodontics has been the introduction of nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloy. This study evaluated the surface topographical changes of two different surface treatments rotary instrument after instrumentation and sterilization. Material and Methods 240 Extracted teeth were included in this study. 90 new AlphaKite and Revo-S NiTi rotary instruments were selected and divided into two groups (Group A 45 AlphaKite and group B 45 Revo-S). Each group were divided into three subgroups: (A1, B1) n=5 files were used as a control, (A2,B2) n=20 files were used to prepare three root canals using endodontic rotary motor then sterilized by autoclave for one cycle under 121°C at 15 psi for 30 minutes and (A3,B3) n=20 files were used to prepare nine root canals using the same rotary system then sterilized by autoclave for three cycles under 121°C at 15 psi for 30 minutes. Files were examined under scanning electron microscopy. Results On examining the AlphaKite, A1 revealed gross machining grooves on their surface with no pits, A2 showed disruption of cutting and A3 showed microcracks and deepening of the machining grooves. B1 showed a smoother surface with few machining grooves, B2 showed dulling and blunting of the cutting edges was predominant and B3 files showed plastic deformation in the form of unwinding of the flutes. Conclusions The defects were less distributed along the electropolished Revo-S files than the physical vapor deposition AlphaKite. Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the cleanliness of root canal walls after retreatment using ProTaper Next (PTN), ProTaper Universal
Retreatment (PTR) nickel-titanium (NiTi) systems and Hedström hand files in curved mesial canals of mandibular molar teeth and the time required for gutta-percha and
sealer removal. Materials and Methods: Ninety mandibular molar teeth with curved mesial roots were instrumented up to #35.04 with Mtwo NiTi rotary instruments and
obturated using the continuous wave of condensation technique. Removal of gutta-percha and sealer was performed using one of the following: PTN and PTR NiTi systems
and Hedström hand files. Samples were placed on the VistaScan phosphor plates in the mesio-distal direction and the radiographs were taken. The digital radiographs
were analyzed using AutoCAD software. Also, the total time required for gutta-percha removal was calculated by a chronometer. Results: The total retreatment time was significantly shorter in the PTN and PTR groups compared with the manual group (p<0.05). There was a
significant difference between the groups according to the total residual gutta-percha and sealer (p<0.05). The PTN and PTR groups left significantly less
gutta-percha and sealer remnant than the manual group (p<0.001). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, the PTN and PTR groups showed less residual gutta-percha and sealer than the manual group. The NiTi
rotary systems were significantly faster than the manual group in the time required for gutta-percha and sealer removal.

Abstract
Objective: To compare the cleanliness of oval cross-sectioned root canals after using different supportive techniques for removal of root canal filling material as part of retreatment process. Methods: One hundred mandibular canine teeth with flat oval cross-sectioned canals were instrumented up to #40.06 and obturated using the warm vertical compaction technique. Removal of the gutta-percha and sealer was performed using the D-RaCe nickel-titanium retreatment instruments. The roots were randomly divided into four groups of 25 teeth, and the activation processes were applied: XP-endo Finisher (XP), EndoActivator (EA) and IrrıSafe (IS). Conventional needle irrigation (CI) was used as the control group. The teeth were sectioned, and digital images were captured. The photographs were analysed using AutoCAD software regarding the area of residual root filling. Kruskal–Wallis and post hoc Dunn’s tests were performed for statistical analysis. Results: There was significantly less gutta-percha and sealer remnant in the XP group than in the other groups (P<0.05). The CI group contained significantly more gutta-percha and sealer remnant than the other groups (P<0.05). The apical third of the CI group had significantly more residual gutta-percha and sealer when compared to that of the other groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, the amount of gutta-percha and sealer in the XP group was lower than that in the EA, IS, and CI groups.

METHODS Eighty human maxillary central incisors with single and straight root canals were instrumented up to #40.02 with manual K-files (Dentsply Maillefer) and obturated using the continuous wave of condensation technique. Removal of the gutta-percha and sealer was performed using 1 of the following nickel-titanium systems: PTN, TFA, RPC, or PTR. The teeth were sectioned, and digital images were captured. The photographs were analyzed using AutoCAD software (Autodesk, San Rafael, CA). Also, the total time required for gutta-percha removal was calculated by a chronometer. RESULTS The total retreatment time was significantly shorter in the PTR group compared with the other groups (P < .05). There was a significant difference between the groups according to the total residual gutta-percha and sealer (P < .05). The PTN and PTR groups left significantly less gutta-percha and sealer remnant than the TFA and RPC groups (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, the PTN and the PTR groups showed less residual gutta-percha and sealer than the TFA and RPC groups. The time required for gutta-percha and sealer removal was similar for all the groups, except for the PTR group.

Abstract
Dentists desire to use NiTi rotary instruments, which do not break inside the root canals of teeth, since the pieces from broken files are difficult to remove. The NiTi rotary instrument breakage is because of cyclic and torsional fatigue. Here the low-voltage (12 V) and high voltage (24 V) electrical treatments were used to enhance the cyclic fatigue of NiTi rotary instruments and increase their durability. In excremental groups, following electrical treatment samples of the NiTi instruments were rotated inside artificial root canals until they broke. Our results showed that electrical treatment with 12-V DC was effective in restoring NiTi instrument's resistance to cyclic fatigue. The scanning electron microscopy images and fractograph of samples exposed to 12-V electrical treatment showed a more regular texture over the surface with less dimpling on fractured site. These patterns can improve the super elasticity of tested devices during rotational movement, and delay the NiTi instruments separation in root canal preparations.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate effects of torsional loading on the mechanical properties of endodontic instruments using the nanoindentation technique. ProFile (PF; size 30, taper 04; Dentsply Maillefer, Switzerland) and stainless steel (SS; size 30, taper 02; Mani, Japan) instruments were subjected to torsional test. Nanoindentation was then performed adjacent to the edge of fracture (edge) and at the cutting part beside the shank (shank). Hardness and elastic modulus were measured under 100-mN force on 100 locations at each region, and compared to those obtained from the same regions on new instruments. It showed that PF and SS instruments failed at 559 ± 67 and 596 ± 73 rotation degrees and mean maximum torque of 0.90 ± 0.07 and 0.99 ± 0.05 N-cm, respectively. Hardness and elastic modulus ranged 4.8-6.7 and 118-339 GPa in SS, and 2.7-3.2 and 52-81 GPa in PF. Significant differences between torsion-fractured and new instruments in hardness and elastic modulus were detected in the SS system used. While in PF system, the edge region after torsional fracture had significantly lower hardness and elastic modulus compared to new instruments. The local hardness and modulus of elasticity of endodontic instruments adjacent to the fracture edge are significantly reduced by torsional loading.
