[FeIIICl(TMPPH2)][FeIIICl4]2: A Stand-Alone Molecular Nanomedicine That Induces High Cytotoxicity by Ferroptosis

Developing clinically meaningful nanomedicines for cancer therapy requires the drugs to be effective, safe, simple, cheap, and easy to store. In the present work, we report that a simple cationic Fe(III)-rich salt of [FeIIICl(TMPPH2)][FeIIICl4]2 (Fe-TMPP) exhibits a superior anticancer performance on a broad spectrum of cancer cell lines, including breast, colorectal cancer, liver, pancreatic, prostate, and gastric cancers, with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values in the range of 0.098-3.97 μM (0.066-2.68 μg mL-1), comparable to the best-reported medicines. Fe-TMPP can form stand-alone nanoparticles in water without the need for extra surface modification or organic-solvent-assisted antisolvent precipitation. Critically, Fe-TMPP is TME-responsive (TME = tumor microenvironment), and can only elicit its function in the TME with overexpressed H2O2, converting H2O2 to the cytotoxic •OH to oxidize the phospholipid of the cancer cell membrane, causing ferroptosis, a programmed cell death process of cancer cells.

Metal-Organic Frameworks/Heterojunction Structures for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering with Enhanced Sensitivity and Tailorability

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are composed of crystalline microporous materials with metal ions, have gained considerable interest as promising substrate materials for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection via charge transfer. Research on MOF-based SERS substrates has advanced rapidly because of the MOFs' excellent structural tunability, functionalizable pore interiors, and ultrahigh surface-to-volume ratios. Compared with traditional noble metal SERS plasmons, MOFs exhibit better biocompatibility, ease of operation, and tailorability. However, MOFs cannot produce a sufficient limit of detection (LOD) for ultrasensitive detection, and therefore, developing an ultrasensitive MOF-based SERS substrate is imperative. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to develop an MOFs/heterojunction structure as an SERS enhancing material. We report an in situ ZIF-67/Co(OH)2 heterojunction-based nanocellulose paper (nanopaper) plate (in situ ZIF-67 nanoplate) as a device with an LOD of 0.98 nmol/L for Rhodamine 6G and a Raman enhancement of 1.43 × 107, which is 100 times better than that of the pure ZIF-67-based SERS substrate. Further, we extend this structure to other types of MOFs and develop an in situ HKUST-1 nanoplate (with HKUST-1/Cu(OH)2). In addition, we demonstrate that the formation of heterojunctions facilitates efficient photoinduced charge transfer for SERS detection by applying the Mx(OH)y-assisted (where M = Co, Cu, or other metals) MOFs/heterojunction structure. Finally, we successfully demonstrate the application of medicine screening on our nanoplates, specifically for omeprazole. The nanoplates we developed still maintain the tailorability of MOFs and perform high anti-interference ability. Our approach provides customizing options for MOF-based SERS detection, catering to diverse possibilities in future research and applications.

A Porphyrin-Based 3D Metal-Organic Framework Featuring [Cu8Cl6]10+ Cluster Secondary Building Units: Synthesis, Structure Elucidation, Anion Exchange, and Peroxidase-Like Activity

Herein, we report a rare example of cationic three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework (MOF) of [Cu5Cl3(TMPP)]Cl5 ⋅ xSol (denoted as Cu-TMPP; H2TMPP=meso-tetrakis (6-methylpyridin-3-yl) porphyrin; xSol=encapsulated solvates) supported by [Cu8Cl6]10+ cluster secondary building units (SBUs) wherein the eight faces of the Cl--based octahedron are capped by eight Cu2+. Surface-area analysis indicated that Cu-TMPP features a mesoporous structure and its solvate-like Cl- counterions can be exchanged by BF4 -, PF6 -, and NO3 -. The polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coated Cu-TMPP (denoted as Cu-TMPP-PVP) demonstrated good ROS generating ability, producing ⋅OH in the absence of light (peroxidase-like activity) and 1O2 on light irradiation (650 nm; 25 mW cm-2). This work highlights the potential of Cu-TMPP as a functional carrier of anionic guests such as drugs, for the combination therapy of cancer and other diseases.

Thermoreversible and tunable supramolecular hydrogels based on chitosan and metal cations

A new thermoreversible and tunable hydrogel CS-M with high water content prepared by metal cation (M = Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺) and chitosan (CS) was reported. The influence of metal cations on the thermosensitive gelation of CS-M systems were studied. All prepared CS-M systems were in the transparent and stable sol state and could become the gel state at gelation temperature (T_g). These systems after gelation could recover to its original sol state at low temperature. CS-Cu hydrogel was mainly investigated and characterized due to its large T_g scale (32-80 °C), appropriate pH range (4.0-4.6) and low Cu²⁺ concentration. The result showed that the T_g range was influenced and could be tuned by adjusting Cu²⁺ concentration and system pH within an appropriate range. The influence of anions (Cl^-, NO3^- and Ac^-) in cupric salts in the CS-Cu system was also investigated. Scale application as heat insulation window was investigated outdoors. The different supramolecular interactions of the -NH₂ group in chitosan at different temperatures were proposed to dominate the thermoreversible process of CS-Cu hydrogel.

Purification of Hydrogen from CO with Cu/ZSM-5 Adsorbents

The transition to a hydrogen economy requires the development of cost-effective methods for purifying hydrogen from CO. In this study, we explore the possibilities of Cu/ZSM-5 as an adsorbent for this purpose. Samples obtained by cation exchange from aqueous solution (AE) and solid-state exchange with CuCl (SE) were characterized by in situ EPR and FTIR, H₂-TPR, CO-TPD, etc. The AE samples possess mainly isolated Cu²⁺ cations not adsorbing CO. Reduction generates Cu⁺ sites demonstrating different affinity to CO, with the strongest centres desorbing CO at about 350 °C. The SE samples have about twice higher Cu/Al ratios, as one H⁺ is exchanged with one Cu⁺ cation. Although some of the introduced Cu⁺ sites are oxidized to Cu²⁺ upon contact with air, they easily recover their original oxidation state after thermal treatment in vacuum or under inert gas stream. In addition, these Cu⁺ centres regenerate at relatively low temperatures. It is important that water does not block the CO adsorption sites because of the formation of Cu⁺(CO)(H₂O)_x complexes. Dynamic adsorption studies show that Cu/ZSM-5 selectively adsorbs CO in the presence of hydrogen. The results indicate that the SE samples are very perspective materials for purification of H₂ from CO.

Bi-layered hollow amphoteric composites: Rational construction and ultra-efficient sorption performance for anionic Cr(VI) and cationic Cu(II) ions

Here, we have developed a novel bilayer hollow amphiphilic biosorbent (BHAB-3) with large adsorption capacity, rapid adsorption kinetics, and cost-effective for the removal of Cr(VI) and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The synthesis was based on the clever use of freeze-drying to fix the structure, secondary modification of the carboxymethyl cellulose microspheres with polyethyleneimine and cross-linking by glutaraldehyde. The consequences of pH, initial concentration, contact time and temperature on adsorption were investigated. The Langmuir model fits showed that the maximum adsorption capacities of the two target heavy metal ions reached 835.91 and 294.79 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, BHAB-3 was characterized by SEM, FT-IR, TGA, and XPS synergistically, showing that it exhibits a strong complexation ability for Cu(II) and a strong electrostatic effect for Cr(VI). Adsorption and desorption experiments showed only a slight decrease in the adsorption capacity of the BHAB-3 for Cr(VI) and Cu(II) ions after 5 and 26 cycles, respectively. Given the excellent properties of this adsorbent, it is a promising candidate for heavy metal ion removal.

Barium-promoted hydrothermal stability of monolithic Cu/BEA catalyst for NH3-SCR

As a promising candidate for NOx elimination from the emission of diesel engines, the enhancement effect of Ba on the hydrothermal stability of cordierite supported CuBa/BEA at 600 °C for 48 h was investigated by XRD, NH3-TPD, H2-TPR, XPS, EPR, TEM and in situ DRIFTS. Different properties and amounts of active species are significant factors contributing to the enhanced hydrothermal stability of CuBa/BEA-HT. CuBa/BEA-HT has more Cu2+/Cu+ redox-couples and stronger interactions than Cu/BEA-HT, indicating an excellent redox property of the active species in CuBa/BEA-HT. The better redox property of CuBa/BEA-HT produces more nitrates that easily participate in the NH3-SCR reaction, which enhances the low-temperature activity. Furthermore, as observed from EPR and H2-TPR, the appearance of more isolated Cu2+ species and fewer CuO species also contribute to the higher hydrothermal stability of CuBa/BEA-HT.

Thickness, surface morphology, and optical properties of porphyrin multilayer thin films assembled on Si(100) using copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition

We report the structure, optical properties and surface morphology of Si(100) supported molecular multilayers resulting from a layer-by-layer (LbL) fabrication method utilizing copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), also known as "click" chemistry. Molecular based multilayer films comprised of 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-ethynylphenyl)porphyrinzinc(II) (1) and either 1,3,5-tris(azidomethyl)benzene (2) or 4,4'-diazido-2,2'-stilbenedisulfonic acid disodium salt (3) as a linker layer, displayed linear growth properties up to 19 bilayers. With a high degree of linearity, specular X-ray reflectivity (XRR) measurements yield an average thickness of 1.87 nm/bilayer for multilayers of 1 and 2 and 2.41 nm/bilayer for multilayers of 1 and 3. Surface roughnesses as determined by XRR data fitting were found to increase with the number of layers and generally were around 12% of the film thickness. Tapping mode AFM measurements confirm the continuous nature of the thin films with roughness values slightly larger than those determined from XRR. Spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements utilizing a Cauchy model mirror the XRR data for multilayer growth but with a slightly higher thickness per bilayer. Modeling of the ellipsometric data over the full visible region using an oscillator model produces an absorption profile closely resembling that of a multilayer grown on silica glass. Comparing intramolecular distances from DFT modeling with experimental film thicknesses, the average molecular growth angles were estimated between 40° and 70° with respect to the substrate surface depending on the bonding configuration.

Dispersion of chitosan on perlite for enhancement of copper(II) adsorption capacity

Chitosan coated perlite beads were prepared by drop-wise addition of slurry, made of chitosan dissolved in oxalic acid and perlite, to an alkaline bath (0.7 M NaOH). The beads that contained 32% chitosan enhanced the accessibility of OH and amine groups present in chitosan for adsorption of copper ions. The experiments using Cu(II) ions were carried out in the concentration range of 50-4100 mg/L (0.78-64.1 mmol/L). Adsorption capacity for Cu(II) was pH dependent and a maximum uptake of 104 mg/g of beads (325 mg/g of chitosan) was obtained at pH 4.5 when its equilibrium concentration in the solution was 812.5 mg/L at 298 K. The XPS and TEM data suggested that copper was mainly adsorbed as Cu(II) and was attached to amine groups. The adsorption data could be fitted to one-site Langmuir adsorption model. Anions in the solution had minimal effect on Cu(II) adsorption by chitosan coated perlite beads. EDTA was used effectively for the regeneration of the bed. The diffusion coefficient of Cu(II) onto chitosan coated beads was calculated from the breakthrough curve and was found to be 2.02 x 10(-8) cm(2)/s.

Functionalization of acetylene-terminated monolayers on Si(100) surfaces: a click chemistry approach

In this article, we report the functionalization of alkyne-terminated alkyl monolayers on Si(100) using "click" chemistry, specifically, the Cu(I)-catalyzed Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of azides with surface-bound alkynes. Covalently immobilized, structurally well-defined acetylene-terminated organic monolayers were prepared from a commercially available terminal diyne species using a one-step hydrosilylation procedure. Subsequent derivatization of the alkyne-terminated monolayers in aqueous environments with representative azide species via a selective, reliable, robust cycloaddition process afforded disubstituted surface-bound [1,2,3]-triazole species. Neither activation procedures nor protection/deprotection steps were required, as is the case with more established grafting approaches for silicon surfaces. Detailed characterization using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray reflectometry demonstrated that the surface acetylenes had reacted in moderate to high yield to give surfaces exposing alkyl chains, oligoether anti-fouling moieties, and functionalized aromatic structures. These results demonstrate that click immobilization offers a versatile, experimentally simple, chemically unambiguous modular approach to producing modified silicon surfaces with organic functionality for applications as diverse as biosensors and molecular electronics.
