Reduction and covalent modification of graphene-oxide by nitrogen in glow discharge plasma

Plasma-induced, N-doped, and reduced graphene oxide-incorporated NiCo-layered double hydroxide nanowires as a high-capacity redox mediator for sustainable decoupled water electrolysis

Although the recent emergence of decoupled water electrolysis prevents typical H2/O2 mixing, the further development of decoupled water electrolysis has been confined by the lack of reliable redox mediator (RM) electrodes to support sustainable H2 production. As energy storage electrodes, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) possess inherently poor conductivity/stability, which can be improved by growing LDHs on graphene substrates in situ. The proper modification of the graphene surface structure can improve the electron transport and energy storage capacity of composite electrodes, while current methods are usually cumbersome and require high temperatures/chemical reagents. Therefore, in this study, dip coating was adopted to grow graphene oxide (GO) on nickel foam (NF). Then, the GO was reduced using nonthermal plasma (NTP) to reduced GO (rGO) in situ while simultaneously implementing N doping to obtain plasma-assisted N-doped rGO on NF (PNrGO/NF). The uniform conductive substrate ensured the subsequent growth of less-aggregated NiCo-LDH nanowires, which improved the conductivity and energy storage capacity (5.93 C/cm2 at 5 mA/cm2) of the NiCo-LDH@PNrGO/NF. For the decoupled system, the composite RM electrode exhibited a high buffering capacity for 1300 s during the decoupled H2/O2 evolution, and in the conventional coupled system, the necessary input voltage of 1.67 V was separated into two lower ones, 1.42/0.33 V for H2/O2 evolutions, respectively. Simultaneously, the RM possessed outstanding redox reversibility and structural stability during long-term cycling. This work could offer a feasible strategy for using NTP to synthesize excellent RM electrodes for application to decoupled water electrolysis.

Nitrogen doped carbonaceous materials as platinum free cathode electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)

Comparison of physicochemical properties and electrocatalytic behavior of different N-doped carbonaceous materials as potential catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was attended. Ball-milling of graphite with melamine and solvothermal treatment of graphite oxide, graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) with ammonia were used as preparation methods. Elemental analysis and N2 physisorption measurements revealed the synthesis of N-doped materials with strongly different morphological parameters. Contact angle measurements proved that all three samples had good wettability properties. According to analysis of XRD data and Raman spectra a higher nitrogen concentration corresponded to a smaller size of crystallites of the N-doped carbonaceous material. Surface total N content determined by XPS and bulk N content assessed by elemental analysis were close, indicating homogenous inclusion of N in all samples. Rotating disc electrode tests showed that these N-doped materials weremuch less active in acidic medium than in an alkaline environment. Although the presence of in-plane N species is regarded to be advantageous for the ORR activity, no particular correlation was found in these systems with any type of N species. According to Koutecky–Levich analysis, both the N-containing carbonaceous materials and the reference Pt/C catalyst displayed a typical one-step, four-electron ORR route. Both ball-milled sample with high N-content but with low SSA and solvothermally synthesized N-GNP with high SSA but low N content showed significant ORR activity. It could be concluded that beside the total N content other parameters such as SSA, pore structure, structural defects, wettability were also essential for achieving high ORR activity.

Immobilized BiOCl0.75I0.25/g-C3N4 nanocomposites for photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A in the presence of effluent organic matter

The BiOCl_0.75I_0.25/g-C₃N₄ nanosheet (BCI-CN) was successfully immobilized on polyolefin polyester fiber (PPF) through the hydrothermal method. The novel immobilized BiOCl_0.75I_0.25/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposites (BCI-CN-PPF) were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy EDS, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) to confirm that BCI-CN was successfully immobilized on PPF with abundant oxygen vacancies reserved. Under simulated solar light irradiation, 100 % of bisphenol A (BPA) with an initial concentration of 10 mg·L^-1 was degraded by BCI-CN-PPF (0.2 g·L^-1 of BCI-CN immobilized) after 60 min. A similar photocatalytic efficiency of BPA was obtained in the presence of effluent organic matter (EfOM). The photocatalytic degradation of BPA was not affected by EfOM <5 mg-C/L. In comparison, the photocatalytic performance was considerably inhibited by EfOM with a concentration of 10 mg-C/L. Furthermore, photogenerated holes and superoxide radicals predominated in the photocatalytic degradation processes of BPA. The total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiencies of BPA and EfOM were 75.2 % and 50 % in the BCI-CN-PPF catalytic system. The BPA removal efficiency of 94.9 % was still achieved in the eighth cycle of repeated use. This study provides a promising immobilized nanocomposite with high photocatalytic activity and excellent recyclability and reusability for practical application in wastewater treatment.

ZIF-67 Derivative Decorated MXene for a Highly Integrated Flexible Self-Powered Photodetector

The rapid development of portable and wearable electronics has promoted the integration of multifunction techniques. Although flexible energy storage systems have been successfully investigated, the compact configuration with photodetector and energy storage components has received less attention. As a new member of the 2D material class, MXene exhibits remarkable electronic and optical properties. Here, through the intentional introduction of ZIF-67 derivatives deposited on the Mo₂CT_x nanosheets, the synthesized Co-CoO_x/NC/Mo₂CT_x heterostructure not only provided a straightforward pathway for photogenerated electrons to transport but also enhanced the structural stability of Mo₂CT_x, leading to a high responsivity and short rise/decay time under the illumination of simulated light in the photoelectrochemical (PEC) configuration. The integrated flexible device based on a zinc ion battery and Co-CoO_x/NC/Mo₂CT_x heterostructure shows outstanding photodetection function and retains the intrinsic charge/discharge behaviors, which could monitor 1 day sunlight changes in real time. The paradigm presented here paves the way for realizing the development of miniaturization and multifunction toward next-generation portable and wearable technologies.

Carboxyl-Rich Carbon Dots as Highly Selective and Sensitive Fluorescent Sensor for Detection of Fe3+ in Water and Lactoferrin

As lactoferrin (LF) plays an essential role in physiological processes, the detection of LF has attracted increasing attention in the field of disease diagnosis. However, most current methods require expensive equipment, laborious pretreatment, and long processing time. In this work, carboxyl-rich carbon dots (COOH-CDs) were facilely prepared through a one-step, low-cost hydrothermal process with tartaric acid as the precursor. The COOH-CDs had abundant carboxyl on the surface and showed strong blue emission. Moreover, COOH-CDs were used as a fluorescent sensor toward Fe3+ and showed high selectivity for Fe3+ with the limit of detection (LoD) of 3.18 nM. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to reveal the mechanism of excellent performance for Fe3+ detection. Meanwhile, COOH-CDs showed no obvious effect on lactobacillus plantarum growth, which means that COOH-CDs have good biocompatibility. Due to the nontoxicity and excellent detection performance for Fe3+, COOH-CDs were employed as a fluorescent sensor toward LF and showed satisfying performance with an LoD of 0.776 µg/mL, which was better than those of the other methods.

Plasma Assisted Reduction of Graphene Oxide Films

The past decade has seen enormous efforts in the investigation and development of reduced graphene oxide (GO) and its applications. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) derived from GO is known to have relatively inferior electronic characteristics when compared to pristine graphene. Yet, it has its significance attributed to high-yield production from inexpensive graphite, ease of fabrication with solution processing, and thus a high potential for large-scale applications and commercialization. Amongst several available approaches for GO reduction, the mature use of plasma technologies is noteworthy. Plasma technologies credited with unique merits are well established in the field of nanotechnology and find applications across several fields. The use of plasma techniques for GO development could speed up the pathway to commercialization. In this report, we review the state-of-the-art status of plasma techniques used for the reduction of GO-films. The strength of various techniques is highlighted with a summary of the main findings in the literature. An analysis is included through the prism of chemistry and plasma physics.

Graphene Oxide Protected Copper Benzene-1,3,5-Tricarboxylate for Clean Energy Gas Adsorption

Among microporous storage materials copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (CuBTC MOF, Cu3(BTC)2 or HKUST-1) holds the greatest potential for clean energy gases. However, its usefulness is challenged by water vapor, either in the gas to be stored or in the environment. To determine the protection potential of graphene oxide (GO) HKUST1@GO composites containing 0-25% GO were synthesized and studied. In the highest concentration, GO was found to strongly affect HKUST-1 crystal growth in solvothermal conditions by increasing the pH of the reaction mixture. Otherwise, the GO content had practically no influence on the H2, CH4 and CO2 storage capacities, which were very similar to those from the findings of other groups. The water vapor resistance of a selected composite was compared to that of HKUST-1. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric (TG/DTG) and N2 adsorption techniques were used to monitor the changes in the crystal and pore structure. It was found that GO saves the copper-carboxyl coordination bonds by sacrificing the ester groups, formed during the solvothermal synthesis, between ethanol and the carboxyl groups on the GO sheets.
