Abstract
In this study, a flame retardant agent, called PEDSCD, is synthesized through a polycondensation reaction. PEDSCD is a chemically expanded phosphorus-containing flame retardant, which is introduced in epoxy resin (EP) to improve its flame retardancy. The molecular structure and thermal stability of PEDSCD are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis, and EP/PEDSCD composites are investigated in detail. EP/PEDSCD exhibits good stability and flame retardancy. These properties are attributed to the triazine structure introduced into the flame retardant system. The triazine structure starts to decompose at a lower temperature and also reacts with the phosphorus element to form P[double bond, length as m-dash]N-, which increases the viscosity of the melt. This inhibits the generation of smoke and reduces the peak of heat release. PEDSCD shows good thermal stability and low flammability. Further, the weight loss from 500 to 800 °C is only 16 wt%, and the residual mass at 800 °C is 32 wt%. With the addition of PEDSCD, the flame retardant quality of the EP/PEDSCD composites is gradually enhanced, and the carbon residue becomes denser, which isolates the heat transfer and inhibits the volatilization of flue gas. The limited oxygen index (LOI) value of 27% and a vertical burning V-0 rating are achieved when PEDSCD is used in combination with ammonium polyphosphate (APP). The cone calorimeter test shows that the peak heat release rate is reduced by 29% and low gas content is generated, which verifies that the combination of PEDSCD and other phosphorus-containing flame retardants exhibits significantly enhanced flame-retardant properties. PEDSCD exhibits a charring and barrier effect in the condensation phase. Overall, using basic characterization and flame retardancy testing, it is proved that PEDSCD exhibits good flame retardancy when added to EP.

Abstract
Multiwall-carbon-nanotube (MWCNT)-cellulose/cellulose composite fibers with promoted mechanical and electronic activities were synthesized. Remarkably, the dispersion of MWCNTs in the composite fibers was facilitated through cellulose grafting, resulting in the tensile strength of the obtained MWCNT-cellulose/cellulose composite fibers being increased to 304.6 MPa with 10 wt% MWCNTs involved, which was almost 106.8% higher than that of pristine MWCNT/cellulose fibers with the same amount of MWCNTs. In addition, the electrical conductivity of the MWCNT-cellulose/cellulose composite fibers was enhanced to 1.3 × 10-1 S cm-1 with the dispersion of 10 wt% MWCNTs, which was almost 108 times higher than that of pristine MWCNT/cellulose fibers with the same amount of MWCNTs.

Abstract
In order to understand the role of defects in chemical reactions, we used two types of samples, which are molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown NiO(001) film on Mg(001) substrate as the defect free NiO prototype and NiO grown on Ni(110) single crystal as the one with defects. In-situ observations for oxide-liquid interfacial structure and surface morphology were performed for both samples in water and Pb-contained solution using high-resolution X-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy. For the MBE grown NiO, no significant changes were detected in the high-resolution X-ray reflectivity data with monotonic increase in roughness. Meanwhile, in the case of native grown NiO on Ni(110), significant changes in both the morphology and atomistic structure at the interface were observed when immersed in water and Pb-contained solution. Our results provide simple and direct experimental evidence of the role of the defects in chemical reaction of oxide surfaces with both water and Pb-contained solution.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a transition metal oxide widely used as a white pigment in various applications, including food. Due to the classification of TiO2 nanoparticles by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as potentially harmful for humans by inhalation, the presence of nanoparticles in food products needed to be confirmed by a set of independent studies. Seven samples of food-grade TiO2 (E171) were extensively characterised for their size distribution, crystallinity and surface properties by the currently recommended methods. All investigated E171 samples contained a fraction of nanoparticles, however, below the threshold defining the labelling of nanomaterial. On the basis of these results and a statistical analysis, E171 food-grade TiO2 totally differs from the reference material P25, confirming the few published data on this kind of particle. Therefore, the reference material P25 does not appear to be the most suitable model to study the fate of food-grade TiO2 in the gastrointestinal tract. The criteria currently to obtain a representative food-grade sample of TiO2 are the following: (1) crystalline-phase anatase, (2) a powder with an isoelectric point very close to 4.1, (3) a fraction of nanoparticles comprised between 15% and 45%, and (4) a low specific surface area around 10 m2 g-1.

Abstract
Ethanol synthesis from CH4 and syngas on a Cu-Co/TiO2 catalyst is studied using experiments, density functional theory (DFT) and microkinetic modelling. The experimental results indicate that the active sites of ethanol synthesis from CH4 and syngas are Cu and CoO, over which the ethanol selectivity is approximately 98.30% in a continuous stepwise reactor. DFT and microkinetic modelling results show that *CH3 is the most abundant species and can be formed from *CH4 dehydrogenation or through the process of *CO hydrogenation. Next, the insertion of *CO into *CH3 forms *CH3CO. Finally, ethanol is formed through *CH3CO and *CH3COH hydrogenation. According to our results, small particles of metallic Cu and CoO as well as a strongly synergistic effect between metallic Cu and CoO are beneficial for ethanol synthesis from CH4 and syngas on a Cu-Co/TiO2 catalyst.

Abstract
Prolonged exposure to X-rays of HAuCl(4) deposited from an aqueous solution onto a SiO(2)/Si substrate or into a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix induces reduction of the Au(3+) ions to Au(0) and subsequent nucleation to gold nanoclusters as recorded by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The corresponding major oxidation product is determined as chlorine {HAuCl(4)(ads) + X-rays --> Au(ads) + (3/2)Cl(2)(ads) + HCl(ads)}, which is initially adsorbed onto the surface but eventually diffuses out of the system into the vacuum. The reduced gold atoms aggregate (three-dimensionally) into gold nanoclusters as evidenced by the variation in the binding energy during X-ray exposure, which starts as 1.3 eV but approaches a value that is 0.5 eV higher than that of the bulk gold. The disappearance of the oxidation product (Cl2p signal) and the growth of the nanoclusters (related to the measured binding energy difference between the Si2p of the oxide and Au4f of the reduced gold) exhibit first-order kinetics which is approximately 3 times slower than the reduction of Au(3+), indicating that both of the former processes are diffusion controlled. Similarly, gold ions incorporated into PMMA can also be reduced and aggregated to gold nanoclusters using 254 nm deep UV irradiation in air evidenced by UV-vis-NIR absorption spectrocopy.

Abstract
In this work, a new method based on nanoscaled Ni-P alloy coating on carbon fiber surfaces is proposed for the improvement of interfacial properties between fibers and epoxy matrix in a composite system. Fiber surfaces and the mechanical interfacial properties of composites were characterized by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), and impact strength. Experimental results showed that the O(1s)/C(1s) ratio or Ni and P amounts had been increased as the electroless nickel plating proceeded; the ILSS had also been slightly improved. The impact properties were significantly improved in the presence of Ni-P alloy on carbon fiber surfaces, increasing the ductility of the composites. This was probably due to the effect of substituted Ni-P alloy, leading to an increase of the resistance to the deformation and the crack initiation of the epoxy system.

Abstract
The electrolytic plating of metallic nickel on a carbon fiber surface has been carried out in order to improve the interfacial adhesion and the mechanical properties in carbon fiber/phenolic matrix composite systems. The surface and the mechanical interfacial properties of composites are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), surface free energy, and the critical stress intensity factor (K(IC)). From the experimental results, it is clearly revealed that the oxygen functional groups and the metallic nickel on fibers largely affect the mechanical interfacial behavior of the composites, resulting in increased surface polarity, whereas the nitrogen functional groups have no effect. Also, a good correlation between surface oxygen functional groups and mechanical interfacial properties and between wettability and K(IC) is established and it is found that a 10 A m(-2) current density is the optimum condition for this system.
