Abstract
The chemical reduction within a family of organic selenocyanates, as masked selenols, using reducing agents, such as Rongalite, sodium dithionite, and sodium thiosulfate is investigated. Using Rongalite, the corresponding diselenides were obtained quantitatively and selectively in very good to excellent yields (51-100 %) starting from alkyl, aryl, and benzyl selenocyanates. The scope of the reaction is unaffected by the electronic nature of the substituents. Furthermore, the reducing agent, Rongalite, is compatible with hydrolysable and reducing-sensitive functional groups. Additionally, a simple methodology employing the in-situ generated benzyl selenolate anion (PhCH2Se-) to promote aliphatic nucleophilic substitution, epoxide ring opening, and Michael addition reactions has been developed; thus, extending the structural diversity of the synthesized selenium derivatives.

Abstract
A stereoselective and environmentally friendly thiolation of terminal alkynes was reported. Thiuram disulfide reagents (tetramethylthiuram disulfide and tetraethylthiuram disulfide) that reacted with alkynes in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/H2O could give (Z)-vinyl sulfides in good yields (up to 88%). This protocol features broad substrate scope, good stereoselectivity, high atom economy, good yields, and is transition metal-free. Mechanistic studies revealed that water and DMSO served as hydrogen sources, which greatly highlighted the unique reactivity of this special reaction involving two H-atom donors.

Abstract
PhSeZnCl, which is also known as Santi's reagent, can catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide by thiols with a GPx-like mechanism. In this work, the first step of this catalytic cycle, i.e., the reduction of H2O2 by PhSeZnCl, is investigated in silico using state-of-the-art density functional theory calculations. Then, the role of the metal is evaluated by replacing Zn with its group 12 siblings (Cd and Hg). The thermodynamic and kinetic factors favoring Zn are elucidated. Furthermore, the role of the halogen is considered by replacing Cl with Br in all three metal compounds, and this turns out to be negligible. Finally, the overall GPx-like mechanism of PhSeZnCl and PhSeZnBr is discussed by evaluating the energetics of the mechanistic path leading to the disulfide product.

Abstract
Selenium, originally described as a toxin, turns out to be a crucial trace element for life that appears as selenocysteine and its dimer, selenocystine. From the point of view of drug developments, selenium-containing drugs are isosteres of sulfur and oxygen with the advantage that the presence of the selenium atom confers antioxidant properties and high lipophilicity, which would increase cell membrane permeation leading to better oral bioavailability. In this article, we have focused on the relevant features of the selenium atom, above all, the corresponding synthetic approaches to access a variety of organoselenium molecules along with the proposed reaction mechanisms. The preparation and biological properties of selenosugars, including selenoglycosides, selenonucleosides, selenopeptides, and other selenium-containing compounds will be treated. We have attempted to condense the most important aspects and interesting examples of the chemistry of selenium into a single article.

Abstract
A general methodology to access valuable 4-(phenylchalcogenyl)tetrazolo[1,5-a]quinolines was developed by the reaction of 2-azidobenzaldehyde with phenylchalcogenylacetonitriles (sulfur and selenium) in the presence of potassium carbonate (20 mol%) as a catalyst. The reactions were conducted using a mixture of dimethylsulfoxide and water (7:3) as solvent at 80 °C for 4 h. This new methodology presents a good functional group tolerance to electron-deficient and electron-rich substituents, affording a total of twelve different 4-(phenylchalcogenyl)tetrazolo[1,5-a]quinolines selectively in moderate to excellent yields. The structure of the synthesized 4-(phenylselanyl)tetrazolo[1,5-a]quinoline was confirmed by X-ray analysis.

Abstract
Oxidative stress involves the increased production and accumulation of free radicals, peroxides, and other metabolites that are collectively termed reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are produced as by-products of aerobic respiration. ROS play a significant role in cell homeostasis through redox signaling and are capable of eliciting damage to macromolecules. Multiple antioxidant defense systems have evolved to prevent dangerous ROS accumulation in the body, with the glutathione and thioredoxin/thioredoxin reductase (Trx/TrxR) systems being the most important. The Trx/TrxR system has been used as a target to treat cancer through the thiol–disulfide exchange reaction mechanism that results in the reduction of a wide range of target proteins and the generation of oxidized Trx. The TrxR maintains reduced Trx levels using NADPH as a co-substrate; therefore, the system efficiently maintains cell homeostasis. Being a master regulator of oxidation–reduction processes, the Trx-dependent system is associated with cell proliferation and survival. Herein, we review the structure and catalytic properties of the Trx/TrxR system, its role in cellular signaling in connection with other redox systems, and the factors that modulate the Trx system.

Abstract
Diaryl ethers form an important class of organic compounds. The classic copper-mediated Ullmann diaryl ether synthesis has been known for many years and involves the coupling of phenols with aryl halides. However, the use of high reaction temperature, high catalyst loading and expensive ligands has created a need for the development of alternative catalytic systems. In the recent past, organosulphur and organoselenium compounds have been used as building blocks for developing homogeneous, heterogeneous and nanocatalysts for this C-O coupling reaction. Homogeneous catalytic systems include preformed complexes of metals with organosulphur and organoselenium ligands. The performance of such complexes is influenced dramatically by the nature of the chalcogen (S or Se) donor site of the ligand. Nanocatalytic systems (including Pd17Se15, Pd16S7 and Cu1.8S) have been designed using a single-source precursor route. Heterogeneous catalytic systems contain either metal (Cu or Pd) or metal chalcogenides (Pd17Se15 or Cu1.8S) as catalytically active species. This article aims to cover the simple and straightforward methodologies and approaches that are adopted for developing catalytically relevant organosulfur and organoselenium ligands, their homogeneous metal complexes, heterogeneous and nanocatalysts. The effects of chalcogen (S or Se) donor, halogen (Cl/Br/I) of aryl halide, nature (electron withdrawing or electron donating) of substituents present on the aromatic ring of aryl halides or substituted phenols and position (ortho or para) of substitution on the results of catalytic reactions have been critically analyzed and summarized. The effect of composition (Pd17Se15 or Pd16S7) on the performance of nanocatalytic systems is also highlighted. Substrate scope has also been discussed in all three types of catalysis. The superiority of heterogeneous catalytic systems (e.g., Pd17Se15 immobilised on graphene oxide) indicates the bright future possibilities for the development of efficient catalytic systems using similar or tailored ligands for this reaction.

Abstract
The efficient regio- and stereoselective syntheses of (Z,Z)-bis(3-amino-3-oxo-1-propenyl) selenides and diselenides in high yields based on the nucleophilic addition of sodium selenide to 2-propynamides and sodium diselenide to 3-(trimethylsilyl)-2-propynamides have been developed. The first examples of the addition of a selenium-centered nucleophile to 2-propynamides with a terminal triple bond and diselenide anion to 3-(trimethylsilyl)-2-propynamides have been carried out. Bis(3-amino-3-oxo-1-propenyl) diselenides are a novel family of compounds, none of which has yet been described in the literature. The glutathione peroxidase-like activity of the obtained compounds has been evaluated and products with high activity have been found. It was established that diselenides are superior to selenides with the same substituents in glutathione peroxidase-like activity. The results of the structural studying of products by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and 77Se-NMR data are discussed.

Abstract
In this work, we present a simple way to achieve 4-arylselanyl-1H-1,2,3-triazoles from selenium-containing carbinols in a one-pot strategy. The selenium-containing carbinols were used as starting materials to produce a range of selanyl-triazoles in moderate to good yields, including a quinoline and Zidovudine derivatives. One-pot protocols are crucial to the current concerns about waste production and solvent consumption, avoiding the isolation and purification steps of the reactive terminal selanylalkynes. We could also isolate an interesting and unprecedented by-product with one alkynylselenium moiety connected to the triazole.

Abstract
We describe herein an alternative and transition-metal-free procedure for the access of benzo[b]chalcogenophenes fused to selenophenes via intramolecular cyclization of 1,3-diynes. This efficient protocol involves a double cyclization of 1,3-diynyl chalcogen derivatives promoted by the electrophilic species of organoselenium generated in situ by the oxidative cleavage of the Se-Se bond of dibutyl diselenide using Oxone® in acetonitrile as solvent in an open-flask at 80 °C. In this study, 15 selenophenes with broad substrate scope were prepared in moderate to excellent yields (55-98%) with short reaction times (0.5-3.0 h).

Abstract
The present review describes the successful application of organoboron compounds in transition-metal-free C-S, C-Se, and C-Te bond formations. We presented studies regarding these C-Chalcogen bond formations using organoboron reagents, such as boronic acids, boronic esters, borate anions, and several sources of chalcogen atoms/moieties. Moreover, a broad range of transition-metal-free approaches to synthesize sulfides, selenides, and tellurides were described using conventional heating methods, which are sometimes green since they use green solvents, safe reagents, among others. Furthermore, protocols using alternative energy sources, including ultrasound, microwave irradiation, photocatalysis, and electrolytic processes, were also shown to be suitable. These protocols were applied to prepare a broad scope of functionalized chalcogenides with high molecular diversity. These studies and their proposed mechanisms were also reported herein in addition to the reuse of reaction promoters.

Abstract
The efficient regio- and stereoselective synthesis of (Z,Z)-3,3′-selanediylbis(2-propenamides) in 76–93% yields was developed based on the reaction of sodium selenide with 3-trimethylsilyl-2-propynamides. (Z,Z)-3,3′-Selanediylbis(2-propenamides) are a novel class of organoselenium compounds. To date, not a single representative of 3,3′-selanediylbis(2-propenamides) has been described in the literature. Studying glutathione peroxidase-like properties by a model reaction showed that the activity of the obtained products significantly varies depending on the organic moieties in the amide group. Divinyl selenide, which contains two lipophilic cyclohexyl substituents in the amide group, exhibits very high glutathione peroxidase-like activity and this compound is considerably superior to other products in this respect.

Abstract
The reaction of 2-(bromomethyl)-1,3-thiaselenole with potassium selenocyanate proceeded via a rearrangement with ring expansion, leading to a six-membered 2,3-dihydro-1,4-thiaselenin-2-yl selenocyanate (kinetic product) which in turn underwent rearrangement with ring contraction to a 1,3-thiaselenol-2-ylmethyl selenocyanate (thermodynamic product). These rearrangements occurred by a nucleophilic attack of the selenocyanate anion at two different carbon atoms of the seleniranium intermediate. The efficient regioselective synthesis of alkyl, allyl, 2-propynyl, benzyl, 4-fluorobenzyl, and 2-pyridinylmethyl 1,3-thiaselenol-2-ylmethyl selenides was developed based on the generation of sodium 1,3-thiaselenol-2-ylmethylselenolate from 1,3-thiaselenol-2-ylmethyl selenocyanate or bis(1,3-thiaselenol-2-ylmethyl) diselenide followed by nucleophilic substitution reactions. Sodium 1,3-thiaselenol-2-ylmethylselenolate underwent nucleophilic addition to alkyl propiolates in a regio- and stereoselective manner affording 1,3-thiaselenol-2-ylmethyl vinyl selenides in high yields predominantly with Z-configuration. Not a single representative of the 1,3-thiaselenol-2-ylmethyl selenide scaffold has been previously described in the literature.

Abstract
Background:
Quinoline derivatives have been attracted much attention in drug discovery and synthetic derivatives of
these scaffolds present a range of pharmacological activities. Therefore, organoselenium compounds are valuable
scaffolds in organic synthesis because their pharmacological activities and their use as versatile building blocks for regio-,
chemio-and stereoselective reactions. Thus, the synthesis of selenium-containing quinolines has great significance, and
their applicability range from simple antioxidant agents, to selective DNA-binding and photocleaving agents.
Objective:
In the present study we describe the synthesis and antioxidant activity in vitro of new 7-chloroN(arylselanyl)quinolin-4-amines 5 by the reaction of 4,7-dichloroquinoline 4 with (arylselanyl)-amines 3.
Methods:
For the synthesis of 7-chloro-N(arylselanyl)quinolin-4-amines 5, we performed the reaction of (arylselanyl)-
amines 3 with 4,7-dichloroquinoline 4 in the presence of Et3N at 120 °C in a sealed tube. The antioxidant activities of the
compounds 5 were evaluated by the following in vitro assays: 2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging
activity, 2,2-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), nitric
oxide (NO) scavenging and superoxide dismutase-like activity (SOD-Like).
Results:
7-Chloro-N(arylselanyl)quinolin-4-amines 5a-d has been synthesized in yields ranging from 68% to 82% by the
reaction of 4,7-dichloroquinoline 4 with arylselanyl-amines 3a-d using Et3N as base, at 120 °C, in a sealed tube for 24
hours and tolerates different substituents, such as -OMe and -Cl, in the arylselanyl moiety. The obtained compounds 5a-d
presented significant results with respect to the antioxidant potential, which had effect in the tests of inhibition of radical’s
DPPH, ABTS+ and NO, as well as in the test that evaluates the capacity (FRAP) and in the superoxide dismutase-like
activity assay (SOD-Like). It is worth mentioning that 7-chloro-N(arylselanyl)quinolin-4-amine 5b presented excellent
results, demonstrating a better antioxidant capacity when compared to the others.
Conclusion:
According to the obtained results 7-chloro-N(arylselanyl)quinolin-4-amines 5 were synthesized in good yields
by the reaction of 4,7-dichloroquinoline with arylselanyl-amines and tolerates different substituents in the arylselanyl
moiety. The tested compounds presented significant antioxidant potential in the tests of inhibition of DPPH, ABTS+ and
NO radicals, as well as in the FRAP and superoxide dismutase-like activity assays (SOD-Like).

Abstract
An efficient strategy for the asymmetric synthesis of Cα-substituted proline derivatives from acyclic α-amino acids has been established. The 5-exo-dig asymmetric cyclization of α-amino ester enolates onto heterosubstituted alkynes provided a product with excellent enantioselectivity via the memory of chirality concept. Density functional theory calculations indicated that a heteroatom is crucial for the success of the asymmetric cyclization because a more stabilized vinyl carbanion is produced. This new method has the potential to enable the rapid asymmetric construction of bioactive molecules containing the pyrrolidine skeleton.

Abstract
Herein, we describe a new strategy to prepare chalcogen-functionalized isoxazolines. The strategy involves the reaction of β,γ-unsaturated oximes with electrophilic selenium and tellurium species, affording 19 new selenium- and tellurium-containing isoxazolines in good yields after 1 h at room temperature. The method was efficiently extended to the synthesis of 5 new (bis)isoxazoline ditellurides. One of the prepared compounds, 3-phenyl-5-((phenylselanyl)methyl)-isoxazoline, demonstrated better anti-inflammatory and antiedematogenic effects than the reference drug Celecoxib.

Abstract
We report here the reaction of in situ prepared PhSeZnCl with steroid derivatives having an epoxide as an electrophilic functionalization. The corresponding ring-opening reaction resulted to be regio- and stereoselective affording to novel phenylselenium-substituted steroids. Assessment of their antibacterial properties against multidrug-resistant bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa Xen 5 strain, indicates an interesting bactericidal activity and their ability to prevent bacterial biofilm formation.

Abstract
Abstract
Organoselenolates, due to the high polarizability of the chalcogen atoms, are generally weak bases and soft nucleophiles used to introduce in stereoselective and mild way a selenium functionality through substitution or addition reactions. Among several methods reported for their preparation, recently the reduction of Se-Se or Se-Halogen bond mediated by elemental zinc becomes particularly attractive for the simplicity and the efficiency of the protocols. An overview on the most recent developments in the field is here reported.
