Evaluation of physicochemical properties of graphene oxide-decellularized pericardium biohybrid scaffold

The decellularized pericardium has been widely used in cardiac tissue engineering, whereas its clinical applications are limited due to weak mechanical performance, high collagen exposure, and being prone to microbial contamination. In this study, a biohybrid scaffold of the decellularized caprine pericardium (DCP) and graphene oxide (GO) was fabricated by an immersion coating technique. The antimicrobial activity of GO was evaluated against Escherichia coli and showed minimum inhibitory concentration at 125 μg/mL and minimum bactericidal concentration at 250 μg/mL. The presence of GO on the surface of the biohybrid GO-DCP was confirmed through SEM analysis. The existence of glycosaminoglycan, elastin, and collagen in the DCP and GO-DCP was inferred from the FTIR spectra. The biocompatibility of GO-DCP was studied by seeding valvular interstitial cells, and the results show GO coating supports cell adhesion on the serous and fibrous sides of the DCP. Further, the biomechanical response of DCP is unaltered by the presence of GO. In conclusion, GO enhances the biological performance of decellularized pericardium, which can be used in cardiac tissue engineering applications.

Electrochemically reduced graphene oxide films from Zn-C battery waste for the electrochemical determination of paracetamol and hydroquinone

Contributing to the development of sustainable electroanalytical chemistry, electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO) films obtained from residual graphite of discharged Zn-C batteries are proposed in this work. Graphite from the cathode of discarded Zn-C batteries was recovered and used in the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) by the modified Hummer's method. The quality of the synthesized GO was verified using different characterization methods (FT-IR, XRD, SEM, and TEM). GO films were deposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by the drop coating method and then electrochemically reduced by cathodic potential scanning using cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical features of the ERGO films were investigated using the ferricyanide redox probe, as well as paracetamol (PAR) and hydroquinone (HQ) molecules as model analytes. From the cyclic voltammetry assays, enhanced heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants (k⁰) were observed for all redox systems studied. In analytical terms, the ERGO-based electrode showed higher analytical sensitivity than the bare and GO-modified GCE. Using differential pulse voltammetry, wide linear response ranges and limits of detection of 0.14 μmol L^-1 and 0.65 μmol L^-1 were achieved for PAR and HQ, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed sensor was successfully applied to the determination of PAR and HQ in synthetic urine and tap water samples (recoveries close to 100%). The outstanding electrochemical and analytical properties of the proposed ERGO films are added to the very low cost of the raw material, being presented as a green-based alternative for the development of electrochemical (bio)sensors with unsophisticated resources.

Assessing cellular internalization and endosomal escape abilities of novel BUFII-Graphene oxide nanobioconjugates

Cell-penetrating agents based on functionalized nanoplatforms have emerged as a promising approach for developing more efficient and multifunctional delivery vehicles for treating various complex diseases that require reaching different intracellular compartments. Our previous work has shown that achieving full cellular coverage and high endosomal escape rates is possible by interfacing magnetite nanoparticles with potent translocating peptides such as Buforin II (BUF-II). In this work, we extended such an approach to two graphene oxide (GO)-based nanoplatforms functionalized with different surface chemistries to which the peptide molecules were successfully conjugated. The developed nanobioconjugates were characterized via spectroscopic (FTIR, Raman), thermogravimetric, and microscopic (SEM, TEM, and AFM) techniques. Moreover, biocompatibility was assessed via standardized hemocompatibility and cytotoxicity assays in two cell lines. Finally, cell internalization and coverage and endosomal escape abilities were estimated with the aid of confocal microscopy analysis of colocalization of the nanobioconjugates with Lysotracker Green^®. Our findings showed coverage values that approached 100% for both cell lines, high biocompatibility, and endosomal escape levels ranging from 30 to 45% and 12–24% for Vero and THP-1 cell lines. This work provides the first routes toward developing the next-generation, carbon-based, cell-penetrating nanovehicles to deliver therapeutic agents. Further studies will be focused on elucidating the intracellular trafficking pathways of the nanobioconjugates to reach different cellular compartments.

Synthesis and Applications of Graphene Oxide

Thanks to the unique properties of graphite oxides and graphene oxide (GO), this material has become one of the most promising materials that are widely studied. Graphene oxide is not only a precursor for the synthesis of thermally or chemically reduced graphene: researchers revealed a huge amount of unique optical, electronic, and chemical properties of graphene oxide for many different applications. In this review, we focus on the structure and characterization of GO, graphene derivatives prepared from GO and GO applications. We describe GO utilization in environmental applications, medical and biological applications, freestanding membranes, and various composite systems.

Co-Doped Magnesium Oxychloride Composites with Unique Flexural Strength for Construction Use

In this study, the combined effect of graphene oxide (GO) and oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (OMWCNTs) on material properties of the magnesium oxychloride (MOC) phase 5 was analyzed. The selected carbon-based nanoadditives were used in small content in order to obtain higher values of mechanical parameters and higher water resistance while maintaining acceptable price of the final composites. Two sets of samples containing either 0.1 wt. % or 0.2 wt. % of both nanoadditives were prepared, in addition to a set of reference samples without additives. Samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy, which were used to obtain the basic information on the phase and chemical composition, as well as the microstructure and morphology. Basic macro- and micro-structural parameters were studied in order to determine the effect of the nanoadditives on the open porosity, bulk and specific density. In addition, the mechanical, hygric and thermal parameters of the prepared nano-doped composites were acquired and compared to the reference sample. An enhancement of all the mentioned types of parameters was observed. This can be assigned to the drop in porosity when GO and OMWCNTs were used. This research shows a pathway of increasing the water resistance of MOC-based composites, which is an important step in the development of the new generation of construction materials.

Functional groups in graphene oxide

Graphene oxide consists of diverse surface chemistry which allows tethering GO with additional functionalities and tuning its intrinsic properties. This review summarizes recently advanced methods to covalently modify GO for specific applications.

Graphene-Reinforced Carbon-Bonded Coarse-Grained Refractories

Carbon-bonded alumina refractories offer excellent thermal shock performance but are lacking in terms of mechanical strength. In the present contribution, the influence of the particle packing and the addition of graphene oxide (GO) to carbon-bonded alumina refractories on the physical and mechanical properties before and after thermal shock was investigated. Coarse tabular alumina grains were coated by a GO suspension and used to prepare dry-pressed compacts. The included graphite fraction (15 wt%) was either regarded as a lubricating matrix component or as a quasi-spherical component of a calculated density-optimized aggregate size distribution. During coking, the GO was reduced to thermally reduced graphene. The porosity, true density and thermal shock behavior in terms of the cold modulus of rupture (CMOR) and Young's modulus were compared. Samples with a higher density were obtained when the irregularly shaped graphite was considered as the matrix component (lubricant). The results showed that the use of GO had a positive impact on the mechanical properties of the graphene-reinforced Al₂O₃-C refractories, especially in the case of a less optimized packing, due to the bridging of delamination gaps. In addition, the thermal shock only had a minor impact on the Young's modulus and CMOR values of the samples. SEM investigation revealed very similar microstructures in coked as well as thermally shocked samples.

Synthesis and Characterization of Graphene Oxide and Reduced Graphene Oxide Composites with Inorganic Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

Graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO), due to their large active surface areas, can serve as a platform for biological molecule adhesion (both organic and inorganic). In this work we described methods of preparing composites consisting of GO and RGO and inorganic nanoparticles of specified biological properties: nanoAg, nanoAu, nanoTiO2 and nanoAg2O. The idea of this work was to introduce effective methods of production of these composites that could be used for future biomedical applications such as antibiotics, tissue regeneration, anticancer therapy, or bioimaging. In order to characterize the pristine graphene materials and resulting composites, we used spectroscopic techniques: XPS and Raman, microscopic techniques: SEM with and AFM, followed by X-Ray diffraction. We obtained volumetric composites of flake graphene and Ag, Au, Ag2O, and TiO2 nanoparticles; moreover, Ag nanoparticles were obtained using three different approaches.

An extensive case study on the dispersion parameters of HI-assisted reduced graphene oxide and its graphene oxide precursor

The formation of highly concentrated and stable graphene derivatives dispersions remains a challenge towards their exploitation in various applications, including flexible optoelectronics, photovoltaics, 3D-printing, and biomedicine. Here, we demonstrate our extensive investigation on the dispersibility of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) in 25 different solvents, without the use of any surfactant or stabilizer. Although there is a significant amount of work covering the general field, this is the first report on the dispersibility of: a) RGO prepared by a HI/AcOH assisted reduction process, the method which yields RGO of higher graphitization degree than the other well-known reductants met in the literature, b) both GO and RGO, explored in such a great range of solvents, with some of them not previously reported. In addition, through calculation of their Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSP), we confirmed their dispersibility behavior in each solvent, while we indirectly validated the most advanced graphitization degree of the studied RGO compared to other reported RGOs, since its HSPs exhibit the highest similarity with the respective ones of pure graphene. Finally, high concentrations of up to 189 μg mL^-1 for GO and ~ 87.5 μg mL^-1 for RGO were achieved, in deionized water and o-Dichlorobenzene respectively, followed by flakes size distribution and polydispersity indices estimation, through dynamic light scattering as a quality control of the effect of a solvent's nature on the dispersion behavior of these graphene-based materials.

Carbon-Bonded Alumina Filters Coated by Graphene Oxide for Water Treatment

The aim of this paper is to prepare nano-functionalized ceramic foam filters from carbon-bonded alumina. The carbon-bonded filters were produced via the Schwartzwalder process using a two-step approach. The prepared ceramic foam filters were further coated using graphene oxide. Graphene oxide was prepared by the modified Tour method. The C/O of the graphene oxide ratio was evaluated by XPS, EDS and elemental analysis (EA). The amount and type of individual oxygen functionalities were characterized by XPS and Raman spectroscopy. The microstructure was studied by TEM, and XRD was used to evaluate the interlayer distance. In the next step, filters were coated by graphene oxide using dip-coating. After drying, the prepared composite filters were used for the purification of the water containing lead, zinc and cadmium ions. The efficiency of the sorption was very high, suggesting the potential use of these materials for the treatment of wastewater from heavy metals.

Chalcogenide vacancies drive the electrocatalytic performance of rhenium dichalcogenides

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the most promising ways to produce clean energy. However, its wide-spread use is hindered by the price of the state-of-the-art catalysts based on precious metals. Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanomaterials are a cheap alternative, but a relatively large portion of them remains unexplored in terms of the HER. Here we report the HER performance of rhenium disulfide and diselenide in an acidic environment. We used sodium naphthalenide as an exfoliation agent. In comparison with other TMDs, the degree of exfoliation was relatively low. On the other hand, rhenium disulfide and diselenide both exhibit high chemical stability towards oxidation even after the exfoliation. The reported HER performance of the exfoliated rhenium dichalcogenides was strongly dependent on electrochemical treatment and to further enhance the performance, we used a series of electrochemical pretreatments at potentials as high as -2 V in sulfuric acid. While the morphology of the samples remained unchanged, the surface was found out to be chalcogen deficient, pointing out the formation of chalcogen vacancies. Consequentially, the HER performance was substantially enhanced. These results were corroborated by theoretical calculations showing improved bonding of hydrogen by chalcogenide vacancies at the surface. Our results show that a very simple electrochemical procedure can be used to improve the electrocatalytic performance of rhenium dichalcogenides and, possibly, also other TMDs.

Synthesis, Composition, and Properties of Partially Oxidized Graphite Oxides

The aim of this paper is to prepare and characterize partially-oxidized graphite oxide and consider if it is possible to affect the level of oxidation of particles by an adjustment of the oxidizing agent. Several samples were prepared, using different amounts of oxidizing agent. The samples were subsequently analyzed. The C/O ratio was evaluated from XPS, EDS, and EA. The amount and type of individual oxygen functionalities were characterized by XPS, Raman spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The structure was studied by SEM and XRD. Thermal stability was investigated by STA-MS in argon atmosphere. The results can be useful in order to design simple technology for graphite oxide synthesis with required oxygen content.

Chemistry of Graphene Derivatives: Synthesis, Applications, and Perspectives

The chemistry of graphene and its derivatives is one of the hottest topics of current material science research. The derivatisation of graphene is based on various approaches, and to date functionalization with halogens, hydrogen, various functional groups containing oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, boron, and several other elements have been reported. Most of these functionalizations are based on sp³ hybridization of carbon atoms in the graphene skeleton, which means the formation of out-of-plane covalent bonds. Several elements were also reported for substitutional modification of graphene, where the carbon atoms are substituted with atoms like nitrogen, boron, and several others. From tens of functional groups, for only two of them were reported full functionalization of graphene skeleton and formation of its stoichiometric counterparts, fluorographene and hydrogenated graphene. The functionalization of graphene is crucial for most of its applications including energy storage and conversion devices, electronic and optic applications, composites, and many others.
