Ultrasonically and Photonically Simulatable Bi‐Ceria Nanocubes for Enhanced Catalytic Degradation of Aqueous Dyes: A Detailed Study on Optimization, Mechanism and Stability

Exploring the diverse performance of nickel and cobalt spinel ferrite nanoparticles in hazardous pollutant removal and gas sensing performance

A simple sol-gel combustion process was employed for the creation of MFe2O4 (M=Ni, Co) nanoparticles. The synthesized nanoparticles, acting as both photocatalysts and gas sensors, were analyzed using various analytical techniques. MFe2O4 (M=Ni, Co) material improved the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV-light irradiation, serving as an enhanced electron transport medium. UV-vis studies demonstrated that NiFe2O4 achieved a 60% degradation, while CoFe2O4 nanostructure exhibited a 76% degradation efficacy in the MB dye removal process. Furthermore, MFe2O4 (M=Ni, Co) demonstrated chemosensitive-type sensor capabilities at ambient temperature. The sensor response and recovery times for CoFe2O4 at a concentration of 100 ppm were 15 and 20, respectively. Overall, the synthesis of MFe2O4 (M=Ni, Co) holds the potential to significantly improve the photocatalytic and gas sensing properties, particularly enhancing the performance of CoFe2O4. The observed enhancements make honey MFe2O4 (M=Ni, Co) a preferable choice for environmental remediation applications.

Enhanced degradation of micropollutants by visible light photocatalysts with strong oxygen activation ability

Visible light photocatalysis is widely considered a sustainable approach to break down micropollutants without chemical addition. To promote the output of photogenerated carriers under visible light, a Z-scheme plasmonic photocatalyst Bi-CeO2/Ag0/BiO2 was designed and fabricated to activate dissolved oxygen in water for micropollutant degradation. The doped Bi not only improved the separation of electron-hole, but also narrowed the band gap of CeO2 to enhance its absorption of visible light. Notably, metallic silver (Ag0) works as an electronic transmission vehicle from Bi-CeO2 to BiO2 in a Z-scheme mechanism. Likewise, the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag0 also enhanced the absorption of visible light. Furthermore, the Bi doping induced abundant surface oxygen vacancies on CeO2 for enhanced capability and selectivity towards O2 adsorption and activation, which favored the generation of O2•- by photogenerated electrons to degrade sulfamethoxazole, enrofloxacin, and bisphenol A. Theoretical calculation results also confirmed the O2•--driven degradation pathway for sulfamethoxazole. Therefore, the Z-scheme Bi-CeO2/Ag0/BiO2 not only extends the photocatalytic reactivity of CeO2-based catalysts to the visible light range, but also provides a chemical-free method to effectively degrade micropollutants.

Development of Co3O4/TiO2/rGO photocatalyst for efficient degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants with effective charge carrier recombination suppression

Pharmaceutical contaminations in the water resources becomes very serious global environmental issue. Therefore, these pharmaceutical molecules should be removed from the water resources. In the current work, 3D/3D/2D-Co3O4/TiO2/rGO nanostructures were synthesized through a facile self-assembly-assisted solvothermal method for an effective removal of pharmaceutical contaminations. The nanocomposite was finely optimized through the response surface methodology (RSM) technique with different initial reaction parameters and different molar ratios. Various characterization techniques were used to understand the physical and chemical properties of 3D/3D/2D heterojunction and its photocatalytic performance. The degradation performance of ternary nanostructure was rapidly increased owing formation of 3D/3D/2D heterojunction nanochannels. The 2D-rGO nanosheets play an essential role in trapping photoexcited charge carriers to reduce the recombination process rapidly as confirmed by photoluminescence analysis. Tetracycline and ibuprofen were used as model carcinogen molecules to examine the degradation efficiency of Co3O4/TiO2/rGO under visible light irradiation using halogen lamp. The intermediates produced during the degradation process were studied using LC-TOF/MS analysis. The pharmaceutical molecules tetracycline and ibuprofen follows pseudo first order kinetics model. The photodegradation results show that the 6:4 M ratio of Co3O4:TiO2 with 5% rGO exhibits 12.4 times and 12.3 higher degradation ability than pristine Co3O4 nanostructures against tetracycline and ibuprofen, respectively. These results shows high efficiency of Co3O4/TiO2/rGO composite against the degradation of tetracycline and ibuprofen.

An efficient optical properties of Sn doped ZnO/CdS based solar light driven nanocomposites for enhanced photocatalytic degradation applications

Metal sulfide - semiconductor nanocomposites synthesized with well-defined tin metal, exhibited the wide bandgap, the absorptions are limited to the UV-vis region for reduction of Reactive Blue 160 (RB 160) under solar light irradiation. The prepared samples were characterized using optoelectronic techniques. Conveniently, a wider range of wavelengths and physical properties can be enabled by doping these metal oxide nanoparticles. Whereas the photoreduction of RB 160 is unambiguously associated within charge separation and transmission progression from the excited Sn doped ZnO/CdS. Furthermore, Photocatalytic degradation efficiency for the Sn doped ZnO/CdS composites still reliant on the excitation strength, indicating the several electrons and protons were precise as a result of charge separation and transmission in prepared catalyst. Sn doped ZnO/CdS composites shows 94% Photocatalytic degradation efficiency within 120 min under sunlight irradiation. This photocatalytic nanocomposites may find capable applications in solar cells to power stretchable and also in wearable electronics.

Solvothermal Synthesis Routes to Substituted Cerium Dioxide Materials

We review the solution-based synthesis routes to cerium oxide materials where one or more elements are included in place of a proportion of the cerium, i.e., substitution of cerium is performed. The focus is on the solvothermal method, where reagents are heated above the boiling point of the solvent to induce crystallisation directly from the solution. This yields unusual compositions with crystal morphology often on the nanoscale. Chemical elements from all parts of the periodic table are considered, from transition metals to main group elements and the rare earths, including isovalent and aliovalent cations, and surveyed using the literature published in the past ten years. We illustrate the versatility of this synthesis method to allow the formation of functional materials with applications in contemporary applications such as heterogeneous catalysis, electrodes for solid oxide fuel cells, photocatalysis, luminescence and biomedicine. We pick out emerging trends towards control of crystal habit by use of non-aqueous solvents and solution additives and identify challenges still remaining, including in detailed structural characterisation, the understanding of crystallisation mechanisms and the scale-up of synthesis.
