Soft‐templating Synthesis of Mesoporous Metal–Organic Frameworks with Enhanced Toluene Adsorption Capacity

Precise preparation of biomass-based porous carbon with pore structure-dependent VOCs adsorption/desorption performance by bacterial pretreatment and its forming process

Pore distribution characteristic is one of the most crucial factors for porous adsorption materials, and the variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) approaches about how to simply and accurately tailor practical porous carbons for VOCs adsorption has gradually attracted attention. Here, precursors with different lignocellulose mass ratios have been used to produce porous carbon for model experiments to investigate the influence of the precursor lignocellulose contents on the pore structure and distribution characteristics of porous carbon, and the applicability of these mechanisms to real biomass materials has been further verified through bacteria-targeted bagasse decomposition: the microvolumes of ultra-micropores have decreased with decrease in cellulose contents, while mesopores have followed the reverse trend. The dynamic toluene adsorption/desorption performances of the obtained samples have been tested. The BACs-36 exhibits high toluene adsorption performance in low concentration with 635 mg/g while the BACs-48 shows excellent reusability in 10 times cycles. Based on this the balance between the adsorptive and regenerative capacities has been observed which indicates that carbon materials with abundant micropores and narrow mesopores have much better adsorption performance than porous carbon with a hierarchical pore structure, while the latter show better regeneration abilities than the former, which resulting in less desorption as a counter-acting force at the pore wall. Furthermore, the porous carbon has been shaped by one-step co-pyrolysis method using phenolic resin, which can not only maintain the hardness but also can avoid pore plugging phenomenon.

Adsorption performance and kinetic study of hierarchical porous Fe-based MOFs for toluene removal

In light of the promising merits of large surface area, uniform pore size, and tunable functional groups, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential to be utilized for adsorbing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, three Fe-based MOFs, MIL-100(Fe), MIL-101(Fe), and MIL-53(Fe), were synthesized systematically and used to adsorb a typical VOC, toluene. Static adsorption, dynamic breakthrough curves, and adsorption kinetics were conducted to assess the adsorption performance. Additionally, the surface functional groups, pore structure, and morphology were systematically characterized by means of XRD, SEM, XPS, FTIR and N₂ adsorption-desorption analyses to reveal the cause of the difference in adsorption of these Fe-based MOFs. The results revealed that the maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of 663 mg/g was achieved by MIL-100(Fe) with the highest specific surface area and pore volume. The dynamic adsorption of toluene on MIL-100(Fe) was in accordance with the pseudo-first order kinetic model and the Langmuir isothermal model. The formed π-π stacking interaction between organic ligands and the benzene ring in the MIL-100(Fe) cluster is the primary adsorption mechanism based on XPS analysis. Moreover, MIL-100(Fe) was easily regenerated via microwave irradiation with a negligible adsorption capacity decrease after three cycles. This work highlights the feasibility of hierarchical porous Fe-based MOFs as toluene adsorbents and promotes the application of MOFs in the field of pollution control.

Surfactant-in-Polymer Templating for Fabrication of Carbon Nanofibers with Controlled Interior Substructures: Designing Versatile Materials for Energy Applications

A simple, scalable, surfactant-in-polymer templating approach is demonstrated to create controlled long-range secondary substructures in a primary structure. A metal bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (MAOT) as the surfactant is shown to be capable of serving as a sacrificial template and metal precursor in carbon nanofibers. The low interfacial tension and controllable dimensions of the MAOT are maintained in the solid-phase polymer, even during electrospinning and heat-treatment processes, allowing for the long-range uniform formation of substructures in the nanofibers. The MAOT content is found to be a critical parameter for tailoring the diameter of the nanofibers and their textural properties, such as size and volume of interior pores. The metal counterion species in the MAOT determine the introduction of metallic phases in the nanofiber interior. The incorporation of MAOT with Na as the counterion into the polymer phase leads to the formation of a built-in pore structure in the nanofibers. In contrast, MAOT with Fe as a counterion generates unique iron-in-pore substructures in the nanofibers (FeCNFs). The FeCNFs exhibit outstanding charge storage and water splitting performances. As a result, the MAOT-in-polymer templating approach can be extended to combinations of various metal precursors and thus create desirable functionalities for different target applications.
