Interfacial S-O bonds specifically boost Z-scheme charge separation in a CuInS2/In2O3 heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic activity

Reducing the recombination rate of photoexcited electron-hole pairs is always a great challenging work for the photocatalytic technique. In response to this issue, herein, a novel Z-scheme CuInS₂/In₂O₃ with interfacial S-O linkages was synthesized by a hydrothermal and subsequently annealing method. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) measurements confirmed the formation of covalent S-O bonds between CuInS₂ and In₂O₃. The quenching and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests revealed the Z-scheme transfer route of photogenerated carriers over the CuInS₂/In₂O₃ heterojunctions, which was further verified theoretically via density functional theory (DFT) calculations. As expected, the CuInS₂/In₂O₃ heterojunctions showed significantly boosted photocatalytic activities for lomefloxacin degradation and Cr(vi) reduction under visible light illumination compared with the bare materials. Accordingly, a synergistic photocatalytic mechanism of Z-scheme heterostructures and interfacial S-O bonding was proposed, in which the S-O linkage could act as a specific bridge to modify the Z-scheme manner for accelerating the interfacial charge transmission. Furthermore, the CuInS₂/In₂O₃ heterojunction also exhibited excellent performance perceived in the stability and reusability tests. This work provides a new approach for designing and fabricating novel Z-scheme heterostructures with a high-efficiency charge transfer route.

A general way to realize the bi-directional promotion effects on the photocatalytic removal of heavy metals and organic pollutants in real water by a novel S-scheme heterojunction: Experimental investigations, QSAR and DFT calculations

Heavy metals (HMs) often coexist with organic pollutants (OPs) in real surface water. Is it possible to find a general way that the removal of one from these two pollutants will promote the elimination of another pollutant? Herein, the bi-directional promotion effects (BPEs) on synchronous removal of Cr(VI) (i.e., hexavalent chromium) and OPs were achieved by a SnNb₂O₆/CuInS₂ S-scheme heterojunction. Specifically, the apparent rate constants are 0.161 min^-1 [(Cr(VI)] and 0.019 min^-1 [Tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH)] in coexisting Cr(VI)/TCH system (which are 3.74 and 1.58 times, respectively, compared to the mono-pollutant system), indicating OPs indeed can act as hole scavengers (electron donors) to consume plenty of photoinduced holes and enable more photoexcited electrons to attend to Cr(VI) photoreduction. More significantly, OPs (i.e., TCH, atrazine and 4-chlorophenol) with different molecular structures possess different adiabatic ionization potentials (AIPs), in an inversely linear relationship with BPEs, i.e., the lower AIP value is, the higher electron-donating ability is, the better BPEs present. Finally, TCH and its degradation intermediates toxicity was forecasted via quantitative structure-activity relationship, demonstrating the toxicity decrease of TCH during the photocatalytic process. This work provides a general strategy for simultaneous removal of contaminants, contributing to wastewater purification.

Emerging bismuth-based direct Z-scheme photocatalyst for the degradation of organic dye and antibiotic residues

Organic dye and antibiotic residues are some of the key substances that can contaminate the environment due to their wide usage in various industries and modern medicine. The degradation of these substances present in waterbodies is essential while contemplating human health. Photocatalysts (PSs) are promising materials that develop highly reactive species instantly by simple solar energy conversion for degrading the organic dye and antibiotic residues and converting them into nontoxic products. Among numerous semiconductors, the bismuth (Bi)-containing PS has received great attention due to its strong sunlight absorption, facile preparation, and high photostability. Owing to the technology advancement and demerits of the traditional methods, a Bi-containing direct Z-scheme PS has been developed for efficient photogenerated charge carrier separation and strong redox proficiency. In this review, a synthetic Bi-based Z-scheme heterojunction that mimics natural photosynthesis is described, and its design, fabrication methods, and applications are comprehensively reviewed. Specifically, the first section briefly explains the role of various semiconductors in the environmental applications and the importance of the Bi-based materials for constructing the Z-scheme photocatalytic systems. In the successive section, overview of Z-scheme PS are concisely discussed. The fourth and fifth sections extensively explain the degradation of the organic dyes and antibiotics utilizing the Bi-based direct Z-scheme heterojunction. Eventually, the conclusions and future perspectives of this emerging research field are addressed. Overall, this review is potentially useful for the researchers involved in the environmental remediation field as a collection of up-to-date research articles for the fabrication of the Bi-containing direct Z-scheme PS.
