Shape transformation and visible region plasmonic modulation of silver nanoplates by graphene oxide

Dual-Functional Capping Agent-Mediated Transformation of Silver Nanotriangles to Silver Nanoclusters for Dual-Mode Biosensing

The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) property, depending on the structure (morphology and assembly) of nanoparticles, is very sensitive to the environmental fluctuation. Retaining the colorimetric effect derived from the LSPR property while introducing new optical properties (such as fluorescence) that provide supplementary information is an effective means to improve the controllability in structures and reproducibility in optical properties. DNA as a green and low-cost etching agent has been demonstrated to effectively control the morphology and optical properties (the blue shift of the LSPR peak) of the plasmonic nanoparticles. Herein, taking silver nanotriangles (AgNTs) as a proof of concept, we report a novel strategy to induce precisely tunable LSPR and fluorescence-composited dual-mode signals by using mono-DNA first as an etching agent for etching the morphology of AgNTs and later as a template for synthesizing fluorescent silver nanoclusters (AgNCs). In addition, common templates for synthesizing AgNCs, such as l-glutathione and bovine serum albumin, were demonstrated to have the capability to serve as etching agents. More importantly, these biomolecules as dual-functional capping agents (etching agents and templates) follow the size-dependent rule: as the size of the thiolated biomolecule increases, the blue shift of the LSPR peak increases; at the same time, the fluorescence intensity increases. The enzyme that can change the molecular weight (size) of the biomolecular substrates (DNA, peptides, and proteins) through an enzymatic cleavage reaction was explored to regulate the LSPR and fluorescent properties of the resulting nanoparticles (by etching of AgNTs and synthesis of AgNCs), achieving excellent performance in detection of cancer-related proteases. This study can be expanded to other biopolymers to impact both fundamental nanoscience and applications and provide powerful new tools for bioanalytical biosensors and nanomedicine.

Graphene Oxide-Supported Ag Nanoplates as LSPR Tunable and Reproducible Substrates for SERS Applications with Optimized Sensitivity

Nanoparticles and nanohybrids with well-defined structures, along with tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties and optimized sensitivity, are crucial and highly desired for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) applications. In this article, we report on a very promising and flexible SERS platforms with a tunable LSPR response and sensitivity based on Ag nanoplates and graphene oxide (GO). The SERS detection sensitivity can be easily optimized and significantly improved by fine-tuning the LSPR band of the Ag nanoplate/GO substrates (to enhance the SERS response) during sample preparation. We applied the as-prepared SERS platform for sensitive SERS detection of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and 4-aminothiophenol and found that the SERS signal varied markedly (by ∼10-15-fold) with the fine-tuning of the LSPR band. The SERS enhancement factor of the Ag nanoplate/GO complexes was more than 10(4) times larger than that obtained using spherical Ag nanoparticles. The as-prepared Ag nanoplate/GO platforms, because of their excellent stability and tunable LSPR properties, will find promising practical SERS applications.

Colorimetric visualization of glucose at the submicromole level in serum by a homogenous silver nanoprism-glucose oxidase system

In this study, we design a homogeneous system consisting of Ag nanoprisms and glucose oxidase (GOx) for simple, sensitive, and low-cost colorimetric sensing of glucose in serum. The unmodified Ag nanoprisms and GOx are first mixed with each other. Glucose is then added in the homogeneous mixture. Finally, the nanoplates are etched from triangle to round by H2O2 produced by the enzymatic oxidation, which leads to a more than 120 nm blue shift of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption band of the Ag nanoplates. This large wavelength shift can be used not only for visual detection (from blue to mauve) of glucose by naked eyes but for reliable and convenient glucose quantification in the range from 2.0 × 10(-7) to 1.0 × 10(-4) M. The detection limit is as low as 2.0 × 10(-7) M, because the used Ag nanoprisms possess (1) highly reactive edges/tips and (2) strongly tip sharpness and aspect ratio dependent SPR absorption. Owing to ultrahigh sensitivity, only 10-20 μL of serum is enough for a one-time determination. The proposed glucose sensor has great potential in the applications of point-of-care diagnostics, especially for third-world countries where high-tech diagnostics aids are inaccessible to the bulk of the population.
