Materials-Driven Soft Wearable Bioelectronics for Connected Healthcare

In the era of Internet-of-things, many things can stay connected; however, biological systems, including those necessary for human health, remain unable to stay connected to the global Internet due to the lack of soft conformal biosensors. The fundamental challenge lies in the fact that electronics and biology are distinct and incompatible, as they are based on different materials via different functioning principles. In particular, the human body is soft and curvilinear, yet electronics are typically rigid and planar. Recent advances in materials and materials design have generated tremendous opportunities to design soft wearable bioelectronics, which may bridge the gap, enabling the ultimate dream of connected healthcare for anyone, anytime, and anywhere. We begin with a review of the historical development of healthcare, indicating the significant trend of connected healthcare. This is followed by the focal point of discussion about new materials and materials design, particularly low-dimensional nanomaterials. We summarize material types and their attributes for designing soft bioelectronic sensors; we also cover their synthesis and fabrication methods, including top-down, bottom-up, and their combined approaches. Next, we discuss the wearable energy challenges and progress made to date. In addition to front-end wearable devices, we also describe back-end machine learning algorithms, artificial intelligence, telecommunication, and software. Afterward, we describe the integration of soft wearable bioelectronic systems which have been applied in various testbeds in real-world settings, including laboratories that are preclinical and clinical environments. Finally, we narrate the remaining challenges and opportunities in conjunction with our perspectives.

Recent progress on the synthesis of metal alloy nanowires as electrocatalysts

Benefiting from both one-dimensional (1D) morphology and alloy composition, metal alloy nanowires have been exploited as advanced electrocatalysts in various electrochemical processes. In this review, the synthesis approaches for metal alloy nanowires are classified into two categories: direct syntheses and syntheses based on preformed 1D nanostructures. Ligand systems that are of critical importance to the formation of alloy nanowires are summarized and reviewed, together with the strategies imposed to achieve the co-reduction of different metals. Meanwhile, different scenarios that form alloy nanowires from pre-synthesized 1D nanostructures are compared and contrasted. In addition, the characterization and electrocatalytic applications of metal alloy nanowires are briefly discussed.

Coalescence of Au-Pd Nanoropes and their Application as Enhanced Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Lattice distortions and defects can lead to a strain effect that greatly affects the electronic structure of the noble metal surface and the chemical adsorption of ligands on the surfaces. Introducing defects is an efficient strategy to improve the activity of noble metal catalysts. Herein, a fusion approach is developed to fine-tune the defects and lattice strain in Au-Pd nanowires. Specifically, braided strands in Au-Pd nanoropes gradually coalesce to form solid nanowires upon H₂ O₂ treatment and heating, leading to a series of Au-Pd nanowires with various amounts of defects. Owing to the 1D morphology, as well as the optimized lattice strain and surface electronic structure, the intermediate Au-Pd nanowire obtained after 60 min heating (denoted as Au-Pd NW₆₀ ) exhibits excellent catalytic activity and stability toward the oxygen reduction reaction, with the half-wave potential at 0.918 V, 45 mV higher than that of the commercial Pt/C; and specific activity reaches up to 1.7 mA cm^-2 , 7.3 times higher than that of the Pt/C.

Understanding the evolution of tunable spiral threads in homochiral Au nano-screws

Penta-twin Au nanorods are transformed into homochiral nano-screws. A feed-back mechanism is proposed to explain the dynamic evolution of the spirals.

Flexible Plasmonic Biosensors for Healthcare Monitoring: Progress and Prospects

The noble metal nanoparticle has been widely utilized as a plasmonic unit to enhance biosensors, by leveraging its electric and/or optical properties. Integrated with the "flexible" feature, it further enables opportunities in developing healthcare products in a conformal and adaptive fashion, such as wrist pulse tracers, body temperature trackers, blood glucose monitors, etc. In this work, we present a holistic review of the recent advance of flexible plasmonic biosensors for the healthcare sector. The technical spectrum broadly covers the design and selection of a flexible substrate, the process to integrate flexible and plasmonic units, the exploration of different types of flexible plasmonic biosensors to monitor human temperature, blood glucose, ions, gas, and motion indicators, as well as their applications for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and colorimetric detections. Their fundamental working principles and structural innovations are scoped and summarized. The challenges and prospects are articulated regarding the critical importance for continued progress of flexible plasmonic biosensors to improve living quality.

Fabrication and Elastic Properties of TiO2 Nanohelix Arrays through a Pressure-Induced Hydrothermal Method

TiO₂ nanohelices (NHs) have attracted extensive attention owing to their high aspect ratio, excellent flexibility, elasticity, and optical properties, which endow promising performances in a vast range of vital fields, such as optics, electronics, and micro/nanodevices. However, preparing rigid TiO₂ nanowires (TiO₂ NWs) into spatially anisotropic helical structures remains a challenge. Here, a pressure-induced hydrothermal strategy was designed to assemble individual TiO₂ NWs into a DNA-like helical structure, in which a Teflon block was placed in an autoclave liner to regulate system pressure and simulate a cell-rich environment. The synthesized TiO₂ NHs of 50 nm in diameter and 5-7 mm in length approximately were intertwined into nanohelix bundles (TiO₂ NHBs) with a diameter of 20 μm and then assembled into vertical TiO₂ nanohelix arrays (NHAs). Theoretical calculations further confirmed that straight TiO₂ NWs prefer to convert into helical conformations with minimal entropy (S) and free energy (F) for continuous growth in a confined space. The excellent elastic properties exhibit great potential for applications in flexible devices or buffer materials.

Highly Strained Au-Ag-Pd Alloy Nanowires for Boosted Electrooxidation of Biomass-Derived Alcohols

Although strain engineering is effective in boosting the activities of noble metal catalysts, it remains desirable to construct fully strained catalysts to push the activity to even higher levels. Herein, we report a novel route to strong lattice strains of a Pd-based catalyst by radial growth of a Pd-rich phase on Au-Ag alloy nanowires that are no thicker than 1.5 nm. It creates not only tensile strains in the Pd-rich sheath due to the core-sheath lattice mismatch but also distortion and twinning of the lattice, producing nonhomogeneous local strains as hotspots for the catalysis. Toward the electrochemical oxidation of biomass-derived alcohols including ethanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol, the highly strained nanowires outperformed their less strained counterparts and reached up to 13.6, 18.2, and 11.1 A mg_Pd^-1, respectively. This strain engineering strategy may open new avenues to highly efficient catalysts for direct alcohol fuel cells and many other applications.

Terpolymer Multicompartment Nanofibers as Templates for Hybrid Pt Double Helices

Hybrid inorganic/block copolymer (BCP) materials have become increasingly relevant for application in heterogeneous catalysis, microelectronics, and nanomedicine. While block copolymer templates are widely used for the formation of inorganic nanostructures, multicompartment templates could give access to more complex shapes and inner structures that are challenging to obtain with traditional processes. Here, we report the formation and characterization of hybrid platinum/polymer helices using multicompartment nanofibers (MCNFs) of polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PB-b-PT) triblock terpolymers as templates. Cross-linking of a PS-b-PB-b-PT helix-on-cylinder morphology resulted in uniform nanofibers with a diameter of 90 nm and a length of several micrometers, as well as an inner PB double helix (diameter 35 nm, pitch 25 nm, core 12 nm). The PB double helix served as template for the sol-gel reaction of H₂PtCl₆ into hybrid Pt double helices (Pt@MCNFs) as verified by STEM, electron tomography, AFM, and SEM. Carbonization of the Pt hybrids into Pt decorated carbon nanofibers (Pt@C) was followed in situ on a TEM heating state. Gradual heating from 25 to 1000 °C induced fusion of amorphous Pt NPs into larger crystalline Pt NP, which sheds light on the aging of Pt NPs in BCP scaffolds under high temperature conditions. The Pt@MCNFs were further sulfonated and incorporated into a filter to catalyze a model compound in a continuous flow process.

Braiding Ultrathin Au Nanowires into Ropes

Braiding is a common skill in daily life but rare at the nanoscale. Most of the current nanohelices are directly grown or assembled without involving mechanical interactions, and they are thus distinctively different from ropes in terms of functions and mechanisms. Here, by coaxially twisting multiple ultrathin Au nanowires, nanoropes are synthesized with elegant helical patterns that are consistent with the macroscopic equivalents. The strain relaxation of lattice transformation causes the nanowires to pursue the maximum degree of twisting, while the mutual packing interactions in a bundle prevent sideways emergence of U-turns. The consistent chirality of the seemingly independent strands can only arise when a first twisting strand causes morphological deformation in its neighbors, which induces the collective uni-directional twisting. The spontaneous braiding and the "remote" control of the nanowires involve mechanical interactions and possibly energy transmission, thus opening doors to chiral assembly and future smart nanodevices.

Facile morphology control of gold(0) structures from aurophilic assemblies

Different gold microstructures have been synthesized by using supramolecular gold(i) organometallic compounds as templates and Ag nanoparticles as reducing agents. The use of fibers resulting from supramolecular assemblies of neutral gold(i) compounds gives rise to the formation of microrods. The use of supramolecular assemblies from ionic molecules results in spherical or square-based prism gold microstructures, depending on the shape of the supramolecular gold(i) precursor assembly. In addition to temperature and reaction time, solvents exert a strong influence on the formation and morphology of gold structures, as borne out by the example that well-defined star-like morphologies have been obtained in chloroform.

Solution synthesis of helical gold nanowire bundles

Helical nanostructures are important nanoscale building blocks. While only a few methods are available for synthesizing helical metal nanostructures, those involving collective twisting behaviour are even fewer. Here, we report a solution synthesis of Au nanowire bundles with hierarchical helical constructions. Ultrathin nanowires with diameters of only about 10 nm formed huge ribbon bundles that have a width of 0.5-1 μm and thickness of a few hundreds of nanometres. These bundles extended to hundreds of micrometres and curled into helices. Mechanism studies revealed that the white floccules formed by Au(i) and a thiol ligand are of critical importance for both the nanowire growth and helical bundle formation. The nanowire growth took place in the floccules following the previously reported active surface growth mode, and the bundle formation was due to the splitting of the active surface. Most importantly, the floccules assisted the strain-induced curling process that yielded helices. As the length of the bundles keeps increasing and they break out from the surrounding floccules, they would have to pass through the pores of the floccules. The imbalanced squeezing at the pore caused the bundles to curl into helices.

Photoluminescent Colloidal Nanohelices Self-Assembled from CdSe Magic-Size Clusters via Nanoplatelets

Reports on photoluminescent colloidal semiconductor two-dimensional (2D) helical nanostructures with one-dimensional quantum confinement are relatively rare. Here, we discuss the formation of such photoluminescent nanostructures for CdSe. We show that when as-synthesized unpurified zero-dimensional (0D) CdSe magic-size clusters (MSCs) (passivated by carboxylate ligands with three-dimensional quantum confinement) are dispersed in a solvent (such as toluene or chloroform) containing hexadecylamine and then subjected to sonication, helical nanostructures are obtained, as observed by transmission electron microscopy. We demonstrate that the formation involves the self-assembly of 0D MSCs into 2D nanoplatelets, which act as intermediates. The CdSe MSCs and their self-assembled 2D nanostructures display almost identical static optical properties, namely, a sharp absorption doublet with peaks at 433 and 460 nm and a narrow emission peak at 465 nm; this is a subject for further study. This study introduces new methods for fabricating photoluminescent helical nanostructures via the self-assembly of photoluminescent MSCs.
