Design of Robust, Lithiophilic, and Flexible Inorganic-Polymer Protective Layer by Separator Engineering Enables Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Batteries with LiNi0.8 Mn0.1 Co0.1 O2 Cathode

Homogeneously Planar-Exposure LiB Fiber Skeleton Toward Long-Lifespan Practical Li Metal Pouch Cells

LiB alloy is promising lithium (Li) metal anode material because the continuous internal LiB fiber skeleton can effectively suppress Li dendrites and structural pulverization. However, the unvalued surface states limit the practical application of LiB alloy anodes. Herein, the study examined the influence of the different exposure manners of the internal LiB fiber skeleton owing to the various surface states of the LiB alloy anode on electrochemical performance and targetedly proposed a scalable friction coating strategy to construct a lithiated fumed silica (LFS) functional layer with abundant electrochemically active sites on the surface of the LiB alloy anode. The LFS significantly suppresses the inhomogeneous interfacial electrochemical behavior of the LiB alloy anode and enables the exposure of the internal LiB fiber skeleton in a homogeneously planar manner (LFS-LiB). Thus, a 0.5 Ah LFS-LiB||LiCoO2 (LCO) pouch cell exhibits a discharge capacity retention rate of 80% after 388 cycles. Moreover, a 6.15 Ah LFS-LiB||S pouch cell with 409.3 Wh kg-1 exhibits a discharge capacity retention rate of 80% after 30 cycles. In conclusion, the study findings provide a new research perspective for Li alloy anodes.

Recent Progress of Advanced Functional Separators in Lithium Metal Batteries

As a representative in the post-lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) landscape, lithium metal batteries (LMBs) exhibit high-energy densities but suffer from low coulombic efficiencies and short cycling lifetimes due to dendrite formation and complex side reactions. Separator modification holds the most promise in overcoming these challenges because it utilizes the original elements of LMBs. In this review, separators designed to address critical issues in LMBs that are fatal to their destiny according to the target electrodes are focused on. On the lithium anode side, functional separators reduce dendrite propagation with a conductive lithiophilic layer and a uniform Li-ion channel or form a stable solid electrolyte interphase layer through the continuous release of active agents. The classification of functional separators solving the degradation stemming from the cathodes, which has often been overlooked, is summarized. Structural deterioration and the resulting leakage from cathode materials are suppressed by acidic impurity scavenging, transition metal ion capture, and polysulfide shuttle effect inhibition from functional separators. Furthermore, flame-retardant separators for preventing LMB safety issues and multifunctional separators are discussed. Further expansion of functional separators can be effectively utilized in other types of batteries, indicating that intensive and extensive research on functional separators is expected to continue in LIBs.

ZnO@C Coated Cellulose-Based Separators Control Lithium Deposition Direction to Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Li metal anodes have attracted attention due to their high specific capacity and low electrochemical potential. Nevertheless, the uncontrolled growth of Li dendrites hinders the practical application of Li metal batteries. Although the various approaches have made performance improvements, safety hazards still exist since Li dendrites are still growing along the anode to the separator during the continuous plating/stripping process. Herein, a straightforward method is proposed to achieve stable Li metal batteries with directional growth control by using a functional ZnO@C/cellulose membrane as a separator. The abundant pore structure and functional groups of biomass cellulose enhance the Li-ion transport and interface compatibility. The ZnO transforms in situ to form a Li-Zn alloy layer which is uniformly coated to the separator to direct uniform ion concentration polarization and charge distribution polarization, control the growth direction of Li, significantly improve the cycling stability, and promote the reversibility of the Li plating/exfoliation process. As a result, the symmetric cell exhibits an extreme lifetime of more than 4500 h and low polarization at 3 mA cm-2 . The cycling performance of the Li||LiFePO4 full cell reaches a capacity retention of 98% after 270 cycles at a mass loading of 10 mg cm-2 .

Separator Design Strategies to Advance Rechargeable Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries

With the increasing demand for low-cost and high-safety portable batteries, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have been regarded as a potential alternative to the lithium-ion batteries, bringing about extensive research dedicated in the exploration of high-performance and highly reversible ZIBs. Although separators are generally considered as non-active components in conventional research on ZIBs, advanced separators designs seem to offer effective solutions to the majority of issues within ZIBs system. These issues encompass concerns related to the zinc anode, cathode, and electrolyte. Initially, we delve into the origins and implications of various inherent problems within the ZIBs system. Subsequently, we present the latest research advancements in addressing these challenges through separators engineering. This includes a comprehensive, detailed exploration of various strategies, coupled with instances of advanced characterizations to provide a more profound insight into the mechanisms that influence the separators. Finally, we undertake a multi-criteria evaluation, based on application standards for diverse substrate separators, while proposing guiding principles for the optimal design of separators in zinc batteries. This review aims to furnish valuable guidance for the future development of advanced separators, thereby nurturing progress in the field of ZIBs.

Constructing an Anion-Braking Separator to Regulate Local Li+ Solvation Structure for Stabilizing Lithium Metal Batteries

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) offer significant advantages in energy density and output voltage, but they are severely limited by uncontrollable Li dendrite formation resulting from uneven Li+ behaviors and high reactivity with potential co-solvent plating. Herein, to uniformly enhance the Li behaviors in desolvation and diffusion, the local Li+ solvation shell structure is optimized by constructing an anion-braking separator, hence dynamically reducing the self-amplifying behavior of dendrites. As a prototypal, two-dimensional lithiated-montmorillonite (LiMMT) is blade-coated on the commercial separator, where abundant -OH groups as Lewis acidic sites and electron acceptors could selectively adsorb corresponding FSI- anions, regulating the solvation shell structure and restricting their migration. Meanwhile, the weakened anion mobility delays the time of breaking electrical neutrality, and the Li nucleation density is quantified through the respective experimental, theoretical and spectroscopical results, providing a comprehensive understanding of modifying anion and cation behaviors on dendritic growth suppression. As anticipated, a long Li plating/stripping lifespan up to 1800 h and a significantly increased average Coulombic efficiency of 98.8% are achieved under 3.0 mAh cm-2. The fabricated high-loading Li-LFP or Li-NCM523 full-cells display the cycle durability with enhanced capacity retention of nearly 100%, providing the instructive guide towards realizing dendrite-free LMBs.

A polyimine aerogel separator with electron cloud design to boost Li-ion transport for stable Li metal batteries

The separator with high Young's modulus can avoid the danger of large-sized dendrites, but regulating the chemical behavior of lithium (Li) at the separator/anode interface can effectively eliminate the dendrite issue. Herein, a polyimine aerogel (PIA) with accurate nitrogen (N) functional design is used as the functional separator in Li metal batteries to promote uniform Li nucleation and suppress the dendrite growth. Specifically, the imine (N1) and protonated tertiary amine (N2) sites in the molecular structure of the PIA are significantly different in electron cloud density (ECD) distribution. The N1 site with higher ECD and the N2 site with lower ECD tend to attract and repulse Li+ through electrostatic interactions, respectively. This synergy effect of the PIA separator accelerates the interfacial Li+ diffusion on the Li anode to sustain a uniform two-dimensional Li nucleation behavior. Meanwhile, the well-defined nanochannels of the PIA separator show high affinity to electrolyte and bring uniform Li+ flux for Li plating/stripping. Consequently, the dendrites are effectively suppressed by the PIA separator in routine carbonate electrolyte, and the Li metal batteries with the PIA separator exhibit high Coulombic efficiency and stable high-rate cycling. These findings demonstrate that the ingenious marriage of special chemical structure designs and hierarchical pores can enable the separator to affect the interfacial Li nucleation behavior.

Surface modification of garnet fillers with a polymeric sacrificial agent enables compatible interfaces of composite solid-state electrolytes

The poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based composite solid-state electrolyte (CSE) has garnered attention due to its excellent comprehensive performance. However, challenges persist in the structural design and preparation process of the ceramic-filled CSE, as the PVDF-based matrix is susceptible to alkaline conditions and dehydrofluorination, leading to its incompatibility with ceramic fillers and hindering the preparation of solid-state electrolytes. In this study, the mechanism of dehydrofluorination failure of a PVDF-based polymer in the presence of Li2CO3 on the surface of Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) is analyzed, and an effective strategy is proposed to inhibit the dehydrofluorination failure on the basis of density functional theory (DFT). We introduce a molecule with a small LUMO-HOMO gap as a sacrificial agent, which is able to remove the Li2CO3 impurities. Therefore, the approach of polyacrylic acid (PAA) as a sacrificial agent reduces the degree of dehydrofluorination in the PVDF-based polymer and ensures slurry fluidity, promoting the homogeneous distribution of ceramic fillers in the electrolyte membrane and enhancing compatibility with the polymer. Consequently, the prepared electrolyte membranes exhibit good electrochemical and mechanical properties. The assembled Li-symmetric cell can cycle at 0.1 mA cm-2 for 3500 h. The LiFePO4‖Li cell maintains 91.45% of its initial capacity after 650 cycles at 1C, and the LiCoO2‖Li cell maintains 84.9% of its initial capacity after 160 cycles, demonstrating promising high-voltage performance. This facile modification strategy can effectively improve compatibility issues between the polymer and fillers, which paves the way for the mass production of solid-state electrolytes.

Modulation of Si-O Structure in Uniformly Ultrasmall Silicon Oxycarbide for Superior Lifespan of Lithium Metal Anodes

Utilizing nanoseeds guiding homogeneous deposition of lithium is an effective strategy to inhibit disorderly growth of lithium, where silicon oxide has been attracting attention as a transform seed. However, the research on silicon-oxide-based seeds has concentrated more on utilizing their lithiophilicity but less on their Si-O structures, which could result in different failure mechanisms. In this study, various Si-O structures of silicon oxycarbide carbon nanofibers are prepared by adjusting the content of octa(aminopropylsilsesquioxane). According to XANES and experimental observations, the C-rich SiOC has an active Si-O-C structure but generates a larger volume variation during lithiation, while in the O-rich phase, the silica-oxygen tetrahedral structure can contribute to alleviate the volume expansion but has poor electrochemical activity. SiOC, which is dominated by SiO3C, has a suitable Si-O and silica-oxygen tetrahedral-structure distribution, which balances the electrochemical activity and volume expansion. This allows the host to demonstrate an excellent lifespan over 3740 h with a tiny voltage hysteresis (22 mV) at 2 mA cm-2, and it retains a favorable capacity of 97 mA h g-1 after 630 cycles with a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.7% in full cells. This study experiences the influence of various Si-O structures on lithium metal anodes.

Yolk-Shell Structured ST@Al2 O3 Enables Functional PE Separator with Enhanced Lewis Acid Sites for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Commercial polymer separators usually have limited porosity, poor electrolyte wettability, and poor thermal and mechanical stability, which can deteriorate the performance of battery, especially at high current densities. In this work, a functional polyethylene (PE) separator is prepared by surface engineering a layer of Ti-doped SiO2 @Al2 O3 particles (denoted as ST@Al2 O3 -PE) with strong Lewis acid property and uniform porous structure on one side of the PE separator. On the other hand, ST@Al2 O3 particles with abundant pore structures and large cavities can store a large amount of electrolyte, providing a shortened pathway for lithium-ion transport, and the Lewis acid sites and porous structure of the ST@Al2 O3 can tune Li plating/stripping behavior and stabilize the lithium metal anode. The ST@Al2 O3 -PE separators exhibit better ionic conductivity (5.55 mS cm-1 ) and larger lithium-ion transference number (0.62). At a current density of 1 mA cm-2 , Li/Li symmetric cells with ST@Al2 O3 -PE separator can be stably cycled for more than 400 h, and both lithium iron phosphate /Li cells and lithium cobaltate/Li cells with ST@Al2 O3 -PE separator have good cycling and rate performance. This work provides a new strategy for developing functional separators and promoting the application of lithium metal batteries.

Effect of Heterostructure-Modified Separator in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with high energy density and low cost are the most promising competitor in the next generation of new energy reserve devices. However, there are still many problems that hinder its commercialization, mainly including shuttle of soluble polysulfides, slow reaction kinetics, and growth of Li dendrites. In order to solve above issues, various explorations have been carried out for various configurations, such as electrodes, separators, and electrolytes. Among them, the separator in contact with both anode and cathode is in a particularly special position. Reasonable design-modified material of separator can solve above key problems. Heterostructure engineering as a promising modification method can combine characteristics of different materials to generate synergistic effect at heterogeneous interface that is conducive to Li-S electrochemical behavior. This review not only elaborates the role of heterostructure-modified separators in dealing with above problems, but also analyzes the improvement of wettability and thermal stability of separators by modification of heterostructure materials, systematically clarifies its advantages, and summarizes some related progress in recent years. Finally, future development direction of heterostructure-based separator in Li-S batteries is given.

Olefin-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks with Electronegative Channels as Cationic Highways for Sustainable Lithium Metal Battery Anodes

Despite the enormous interest in Li metal as an ideal anode material, the uncontrollable Li dendrite growth and unstable solid electrolyte interphase have plagued its practical application. These limitations can be attributed to the sluggish and uneven Li+ migration towards Li metal surface. Here, we report olefin-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with electronegative channels for facilitating selective Li+ transport. The triazine rings and fluorinated groups of the COFs are introduced as electron-rich sites capable of enhancing salt dissociation and guiding uniform Li+ flux within the channels, resulting in a high Li+ transference number (0.85) and high ionic conductivity (1.78 mS cm-1 ). The COFs are mixed with a polymeric binder to form mixed matrix membranes. These membranes enable reliable Li plating/stripping cyclability over 700 h in Li/Li symmetric cells and stable capacity retention in Li/LiFePO4 cells, demonstrating its potential as a viable cationic highway for accelerating Li+ conduction.

Fatigue-Free and Skin-like Supramolecular Ion-Conductive Elastomeric Interphases for Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

The heterogeneity and continuous cracking of the static solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) are one of the most critical barriers that largely limit the cycle life of lithium (Li) metal batteries. Herein, we report a fatigue-free dynamic supramolecular ion-conductive elastomeric interphase (DSIEI) for a highly efficient and dendrite-free lithium metal anode. The soft phase poly(propylene glycol) backbone with loosely Li+-O coordinating interaction was responsible for fast ion transport. Simultaneously, the supramolecular quadruple hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) in the hard phases endow the elastomeric interphase with mechanical enhancement, while gradient H-bonds can dissipate strain energy via the sequential bonding cleavage. Such a design affords superior mechanical robustness, high ionic conductivity, gradient energy dissipation, and high Li+ transference number. Besides, anion enrichment in DSIEI assists in situ construction of a lithium fluoride-rich inner layer upon cycling. The resultant biomimetic bilayer structure enables the symmetric cells with superior cyclability of over 600 h at a high current density of 10 mA cm-2. Moreover, the DSIEI allows stable operation of the full cells under constrained conditions of limited lithium excess, a high-loading LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode, and a low negative/positive capacity (N/P) ratio. This work presents a powerful strategy for deigning artificial SEI and achieving high-energy-density Li metal batteries.

Highly Stable Potassium Metal Anodes with Controllable Thickness and Area Capacity

K metal battery is a kind of high-energy-density storage device with economic advantages. However, due to the dendrite growth and difficult processing characteristics, it is difficult to prepare stable K metal anode with thin thickness and fixed area capacity, which severely limits its development. In this work, a multi-functional 3D skeleton (rGCA) is synthesized by simple vacuum filtration and thermal reduction, and K metal anodes with controllable thickness and area capacity (K content) can be fabricated by changing the raw material mass and graphene layer spacing of rGCA. Moreover, the graphene sheet layer of rGCA can relax stress and relieve volume expansion; carbon nanotubes can serve as the fast transport channel of electrons, reducing internal impedance and local current density; Ag nanoparticles can induce the uniform nucleation and deposition of K+ . The K metal composite anodes (rGCA-K) based on the conductive skeleton can effectively suppress dendrites and exhibit excellent electrochemical performance in symmetric and full cells. The controllable fabrication process of stable K metal anode is expected to help K metal batteries move toward the stage of commercial production.

In Situ Anchoring Ultrafine ZnS Nanodots on 2D MXene Nanosheets for Accelerating Polysulfide Redox and Regulating Li Plating

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is a promising energy storage system due to its cost effectiveness and high energy density. However, formation of Li dendrites from Li metal anode and shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) from S cathode impede its practical application. Herein, ultrafine ZnS nanodots are uniformly grown on 2D MXene nanosheets by a low-temperature (60 °C) hydrothermal method for the first time. Distinctively, the ZnS nanodot-decorated MXene nanosheets (ZnS/MXene) can be easily filtered to be a flexible and freestanding film in several minutes. The ZnS/MXene film can be used as a current collector for Li-metal anode to promote uniform Li deposition due to the superior lithiophilicity of ZnS nanodots. ZnS/MXene powders obtained by freeze drying can be used as separator decorator to address the shuttle effect of LiPSs due to their excellent adsorbability. Theoretical calculation proves that the existence of ZnS nanodots on MXene can obviously improve the adsorption ability of ZnS/MXene with Li+ and LiPSs. Li-S full cells with composite Li-metal anode and modified separator exhibit remarkable rate and cycling performance. Other transition metal sulfides (CdS, CuS, etc.) can be also grown on 2D MXene nanosheets by the low-temperature hydrothermal strategy.

Flattening of Lithium Plating in Carbonate Electrolytes Enabled by All-In-One Separator

The uncontrollable dendritic growth of metallic lithium during repeated cycling in carbonate electrolytes is a crucial obstacle hindering the practical use of Li-metal batteries (LMBs). Among numerous approaches proposed to mitigate the intrinsic constraints of Li metal, the design of a functional separator is an attractive approach to effectively suppress the growth of Li dendrites because direct contact with both the Li metal surface and the electrolyte is maintained. Here, a newly designed all-in-one separator containing bifunctional CaCO₃ nanoparticles (CPP separator) is proposed to achieve the flattening of Li deposits on the Li electrode. Strong interactions between the highly polar CaCO₃ nanoparticles and the polar solvent reduces the ionic radius of the Li⁺ -solvent complex, thus increasing the Li⁺ transference number and leading to a reduced concentration overpotential in the electrolyte-filled separator. Furthermore, the integration of CaCO₃ nanoparticles into the separator induces the spontaneous formation of mechanically-strong and lithiophilic CaLi₂ at the Li/separator interface, which effectively decreases the nucleation overpotential toward Li plating. As a result, the Li deposits exhibit dendrite-free planar morphologies, thus enabling excellent cycling performance in LMBs configured with a high-Ni cathode in a carbonate electrolyte under practical operating conditions.

Self-Assembly Monolayer Inspired Stable Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interphase Design for Next-Generation Lithium Metal Batteries

Lithium metal is widely regarded as the "ultimate" anode for energy-dense Li batteries, but its high reactivity and delicate interface make it prone to dendrite formation, limiting its practical use. Inspired by self-assembled monolayers on metal surfaces, we propose a facile yet effective strategy to stabilize Li metal anodes by creating an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Our method involves dip-coating Li metal in MPDMS to create an SEI layer that is rich in inorganic components, allowing uniform Li plating/stripping under a low overpotential over 500 cycles in carbonate electrolytes. In comparison, pristine Li metal shows a rapid increase in overpotential after merely 300 cycles, leading to failure soon after. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that this uniform artificial SEI suppresses Li dendrite formation. We further demonstrated its enhanced stability pairing with LiFePO₄ and LiNi_1-x-yCo_xMn_yO₂ cathodes, highlighting the proposed strategy as a promising solution for practical Li metal batteries.

Tuning Li Nucleation by a Hybrid Lithiophilic Protective Layer for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Lithium (Li) metal has been recognized as the most promising anode material for next-generation rechargeable batteries. However, the practical application of Li anodes is hampered by the growth of Li dendrites. To address this issue, a robust and uniform Sb-based hybrid lithiophilic protective layer is designed and built by a facile in situ surface reaction approach. As evidenced theoretically and experimentally, the as-prepared hybrid protective layer provides outstanding wettability and fast charge-transfer kinetics. Moreover, the lithiophilic Sb embedded in the protective layer provides a rich site for Li nucleation, which effectively reduces the overpotential and induces uniform Li deposition. Consequently, the symmetric cell exhibits a long lifespan of over 1600 h at 1 mA cm^-2 and 1 mAh cm^-2 with a low voltage polarization. Furthermore, excellent cycling stability is also obtained in Li-S full cells (60% capacity retention in 800 cycles at 1 C) and Li||LFP full cells (74% capacity retention in 500 cycles at 5 C). This work proposed a facile but efficient strategy to stabilize the Li metal anode.

Ultralight Porous Cu Nanowire Aerogels as Stable Hosts for High Li-Content Metal Anodes

Using porous copper (Cu) as the host is one of the most effective approaches to stabilize Li metal anodes. However, the most widely used porous Cu hosts usually account for the excessive mass proportion of composite anodes, which seriously decreases the energy density of Li metal batteries. Herein, an ultralight porous Cu nanowire aerogel (UP-Cu) is reported as the Li metal anode host to accommodate a high mass loading of Li content of 77 wt %. Specifically, the Li/UP-Cu electrode displays a satisfactory gravimetric capacity of 2715 mAh g^-1, which is higher than that of the most reported Li metal composite anodes. The UP-Cu host achieves a high Coulombic efficiency of ∼98.9% after 250 cycles in the half cell and exceptional electrochemical stability under high-current-density and deep-plating-stripping conditions in the symmetrical cell. The Li/UP-Cu|LiFePO₄ battery displays a specific capacity of 102 mAh g^-1 at 5 C for 5000 cycles. The Li/UP-Cu|LiFePO₄ pouch cell achieves a significantly high capacity of 146.3 mAh g^-1 with a high capacity retention of 95.83% for 360 cycles. This work provides a lightweight porous host to stabilize Li-metal anodes and maintain their high mass-specific capacity.

Thermal-Stable Separators: Design Principles and Strategies Towards Safe Lithium-Ion Battery Operations

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are momentous energy storage devices, which have been rapidly developed due to their high energy density, long lifetime, and low self-discharge rate. However, the frequent occurrence of fire accidents in laptops, electric vehicles, and mobile phones caused by thermal runaway of the inside batteries constantly reminds us of the urgency in pursuing high-safety LIBs with high performance. To this end, this Review surveyed the state-of-the-art developments of high-temperature-resistant separators for highly safe LIBs with excellent electrochemical performance. Firstly, the basic properties of separators (e. g., thickness, porosity, pore size, wettability, mechanical strength, and thermal stability) in constructing commercialized LIBs were introduced. Secondly, the working mechanisms of advanced separators with different melting points acting in the thermal runaway stage were discussed in terms of improving battery safety. Thirdly, rational design strategies for constructing high-temperature-resistant separators for LIBs with high safety were summarized and discussed, including graft modification, blend modification, and multilayer composite modification strategies. Finally, the current obstacles and future research directions in the field of high-temperature-resistant separators were highlighted. These design ideas are expected to be applied to other types of high-temperature-resistant energy storage systems working under extreme conditions.

Achieving Highly Reversible Zinc Anodes via N, N-Dimethylacetamide Enabled Zn-Ion Solvation Regulation

Although aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising for scalable energy storage application, the actual performance of ZIBs is hampered by the irreversibility. Optimization of electrolyte composition is a relatively practical and facile way to improve coulombic efficiency (CE) and Zn plating/stripping reversibility of ZIBs. N,N-Dimethylacetamide (DMA) has a higher Gutmann donor number (DN) than that of H₂ O, abundant polar groups, and economic price. Herein, a mixture electrolyte containing 10 vol% DMA and ZnSO₄ , which has an enhanced Zn reversibility almost fourfold higher than that of pure ZnSO₄ electrolyte, is demonstrated. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation and spectroscopic analysis reveal DMA has the ability to reconstruct the solvation structure of Zn²⁺ and capture free water molecules via forming Hbonds. The inhibited dendrite growth on Zn anode is further clarified by an in situ characterization. This work provides a feasible way for the development of long-lifespan ZIBs.

Ultrastable and High-Rate 2D Siloxene Anode Enabled by Covalent Organic Framework Engineering for Advanced Lithium-Ion Batteries

Siloxene as a new type of 2D material has wide potential applications due to its special structure. Especially, as anode for lithium-ion batteries, siloxene shows promising prospect due to its small volume change and low diffusion pathway. However, the unstable solid electrolyte interphase and low electronic conductivity lead to the low Coulombic efficiency, poor rate capability, and limited cycling performance. To settle the problems, a thin porous covalent organic framework (COF) coating layer is designed by in situ growth on micro-sized siloxene. With the inherent ionic conductive and electrolyte compatible advantages of COF, the engineered siloxene demonstrates superior electrochemical performance with 96% capacity retention at 8 A g^-1 for 1500 cycles.

A Single-Layer Composite Separator with 3D-Reinforced Microstructure for Practical High-Temperature Lithium Ion Batteries

Incorporation of ceramic materials into separators has been frequently applied in both research and industry to improve the overall high-temperature performances of lithium ion batteries. However, inorganic ceramic particles tend to form aggregation in separators and even fall off in the separator matrix due to the inferior combination between ceramic particles and polymer matrix, giving rise to a decrease in separator porosity and thus the degradation of battery performances. Herein, a single-layer core-shell architecture is designed to reinforce the polymer matrix through encircling Al₂ O₃ particles by poly(vinylidene fluoride) with strong inter-molecular interaction. The 3D-reinforced microstructure effectively improves pore distribution and thermal stability to resist the dimensional deformation at high temperatures, thus giving rise to a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.16% and 87.5% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 80 °C for LiFePO₄ /Li batteries. In particular, the excellent performances of the proposed separator microstructure are confirmed with a thickness value of commercial separators. This work provides a promising strategy to fabricate a core-shell structural composite separator for stable lithium ion batteries at high temperatures.

Achieve Stable Lithium Metal Anode by Sulfurized-Polyacrylonitrile Modified Separator for High-Performance Lithium Batteries

To develop a high-energy-density lithium battery, there still are several severe challenges for Li metal anode: low Coulombic efficiency caused by its high chemical reactivity, Li dendrite formation, and "dead" Li accumulation during repeated plating/stripping processes. Especially, lithium dendrite growth imposes inferior cycling stability and serious safety issues. Herein, we propose a facile but effective strategy to suppress lithium dendrite growth through an artificial inorganic-polymer protective layer derived from sulfurized polyacrylonitrile on a polyethylene separator. Benefiting from the lithiated sulfurized polyacrylonitrile and poly(acrylic acid), the flexible and ion-conductive protective layer could regulate Li⁺ flux and facilitate dendrite-free lithium deposition. Consequently, lithium metal with the meritorious protective layer can achieve a long-term cycling with negligible overpotential rise in Li-Li symmetric cells, even at a high areal capacity of 5 mAh cm^-2. Remarkably, such a protective layer enables stable cycling performance of Li-S cell with a high areal capacity (∼9 mAh cm^-2). This work provides a valuable exploration strategy for potential industrial applications of high-performance lithium metal batteries.

A Review of High-Energy Density Lithium-Air Battery Technology: Investigating the Effect of Oxides and Nanocatalysts

In vehicles that require a lot of electricity, such as electric vehicles, it is necessary to use high-energy batteries. Among the developed batteries, the lithium-ion battery has shown better performance. This battery has an energy density of 10 equal to that of a lithium-ion battery and uses air oxygen as the active material of the cathode and anode like a lithium-ion battery made of lithium metal. The cathode used in these batteries must have special properties such as strong catalytic activity and high conductivity, and nanotechnology has greatly helped to improve the materials used in the cathode of lithium-air batteries. The importance of proper catalyst distribution and the relationship between the oxide product and the catalyst and the indirect effect of the ORR catalyst on the OER reaction is not present in the fuel cell. The maximum capacity of lithium-air battery theory using graphene under optimal electron conduction conditions and the experimental maximum obtained for graphene by optimizing the structure geometry, examples of structural engineering using carbon fiber and carbon nanotubes in cathode fabrication with the ability to perform the reaction properly while providing space for lithium oxide placement, are examined. This article describes the mechanism of this battery, and its components are examined. The challenges of using this battery and the application of nanotechnology to solve these challenges are also discussed.

Regulating Interfacial Li-Ion Transport via an Integrated Corrugated 3D Skeleton in Solid Composite Electrolyte for All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Although solid composite electrolytes show tremendous potential for the practical solid-state lithium metal batteries, searching for a straightforward tactic to promote the ion conduction at electrolyte/electrode interface, especially settling lithium dendrites formation caused by the concentration gradient polarization, are still long-standing problems. Here, the authors report a corrugated 3D nanowires-bulk ceramic-nanowires (NCN) skeleton reinforced composite electrolyte with regulated interfacial Li-ion transport behavior. The special and integrated NCN skeleton endows the electrolyte with fast Li-ion transfer and solves the Li⁺ concentration polarization at electrode/electrolyte interface, thereby eliminating the energy barrier originated from the redistribution of charge carriers and offering homogeneous interfacial Li-ion flux on lithium anode. As a "double insurance", the bulk ceramic sheet in 3D framework enables the electrolyte to block the mobility of anions. The rational designed NCN composite electrolyte exhibits excellent ionic conductivity and the assembled all-solid-state battery possesses 90.2% capacity retention after 500 cycles. The proposed strategy affords a special insight in designing high-performance solid composite electrolytes.

Scalable Synthesis of Nano-Sized Bi for Separator Modifying in 5V-Class Lithium Metal Batteries and Potassium Ion Batteries Anodes

With the advantages of high theoretical-specific capacity and lowest working potential, lithium metal anode is considered as the most promising anode for next-generation batteries. Here, a scalable dealloying method is developed to prepare nano-sized bismuth (Bi). It is found that the Bi-modification can not only enhance the wettability of the commercial polyethylene separator but also suppresses the lithium dendrite growth. With the nano-sized Bi modified separator, 5V-class lithium metal batteries with commercial carbonate-based electrolyte show a 91% capacity retention ratio after 800 cycles. First-principle calculations prove that lithium atoms tend to deposit smoothly on the Bi surface. Moreover, for potassium ion batteries, nano-sized Bi shows a stable cycling performance and high capacity. The results may be useful for the development of high-energy and high-safety batteries.

High-Safety and Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Batteries Enabled by Building a Stable Interface in a Nonflammable Medium-Concentration Phosphate Electrolyte

Lithium metal anodes are promising for their high energy density and low working potential. However, high reactivity and dendrite growth of lithium metal lead to serious safety issues. Lithium dendrite may form "dead lithium" or pierce the separator, which will cause low efficiency and short-circuit inside the battery. A nonflammable phosphate-based electrolyte can effectively solve the flammability problem. Also, it shows poor compatibility with lithium metal anodes, resulting in an unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI), which leads to dendrite growth and poor electrochemical performance. In this study, trimethyl phosphate is used to ensure the safety of lithium metal batteries. By adjusting the concentration of lithium salt and introducing fluoroethylene carbonate, a stable SEI layer is formed on the surface of the lithium metal anode and dendrite growth of the lithium metal anode is inhibited. Lithium metal batteries with a modified electrolyte achieved stable electrochemical plating/stripping, and the full cell has 93.4% capacity left and the coulombic efficiency is nearly 100%. In addition, the modified electrolyte can also enable reversible intercalation and de-intercalation of Li⁺ in the commercial graphite anode. This work may provide an alternative direction for the development of lithium metal batteries with high safety and high energy density.

Dendrite-Free Li Metal Anodes and the Formation of Plating Textures with a High Transference Number Modified Separator

The application of Li metal anodes is currently hindered by the uncontrolled growth of Li dendrites. Herein, the effects of a modified separator with a high Li⁺ transference number (t₊ ) on the structure and electrochemical performance of Li metal anodes are reported. Stable and dendrite-free plating/stripping cycles are achieved under current densities up to 5 mA cm^-2 and areal capacities up to 20 mAh cm^-2 . The uniformly grown Li grains under the high t₊ environment also exhibit well-defined textures (preferred orientations). At a low plating capacity, epitaxial growth takes place on the {100} textures already existing in the rolled Li foils and the uniform Li⁺ flux strengthens this preferred orientation. Increasing the plating capacity to 20 mAh cm^-2 , the later-grown textures change to {110} due to the reduced space charges and alleviated transport limits of Li⁺ under the high t₊ environment, which favor the exposure of the close-packed {110} planes. Compression-induced <111> fiber textures are also resolved and the content increases with the plating capacity. Identification of the textures is meaningful for the exploration of advanced epitaxial substrates beyond Cu foils for high-energy-density Li metal batteries. LiS pouch cells are finally evaluated for the potential application of the modified separator.

Covalent Organic Frameworks and Their Derivatives for Better Metal Anodes in Rechargeable Batteries

Metal anodes based on a plating/stripping electrochemistry such as metallic Li, Na, K, Zn, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Al are recognized as promising anode materials for constructing next-generation high-energy-density rechargeable metal batteries owing to their low electrochemical potential, high theoretical specific capacity, superior electronic conductivity, etc. However, inherent issues such as high chemical reactivity, severe growth of dendrites, huge volume changes, and unstable interface largely impede their practical application. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their derivatives as emerging multifunctional materials have already well addressed the inherent issues of metal anodes in the past several years due to their abundant metallophilic functional groups, special inner channels, and controllable structures. COFs and their derivatives can solve the issues of metal anodes by interfacial modification, homogenizing ion flux, acting as nucleation seeds, reducing the corrosion of metal anodes, and so on. Nevertheless, related reviews are still absent. Here we present a detailed review of multifunctional COFs and their derivatives in metal anodes for rechargeable metal batteries. Meanwhile, some outlooks and opinions are put forward. We believe the review can catch the eyes of relevant researchers and supply some inspiration for future research.

Molecular Coupling and Self-Assembly Strategy toward WSe2 /Carbon Micro-Nano Hierarchical Structure for Elevated Sodium-Ion Storage

Sodium (Na) ion-based dual-ion batteries (Na-DIBs) have attracted great attention, owing to their benefits of low cost, high working voltage, and environmental friendliness. However, the limited capacity and low tap density of currently reported anode materials restrict the further improvement of Na-DIBs. Herein, a micro-nano structure with vertically aligned WSe₂ nanoflakes anchored tightly on a micron-sized carbon sphere (WSe₂ /CS) is successfully constructed via combining the molecular coupling and self-assembly strategy. Within this hierarchical structure, the WSe₂ nanoflakes can shorten the diffusion path for Na⁺ ions and alleviate structural deformation during the charge/discharge process; meanwhile, the micron-sized carbon core provides conductive support and helps improve the total tap density of the anode electrode. As a result, this micron-sized WSe₂ /CS displays a high specific capacity of ≈252.8 mAh g^-1 and good cycling performance with ≈92% capacity retention after 1200 cycles. Moreover, by pairing this WSe₂ /CS anode with environmental friendly graphite as cathode, a proof-of-concept Na-DIB shows 85.6% capacity retention after 1000 cycles, which is among the best performances of previously reported Na-DIBs.

Performance Analysis of Indentation Punch on High Energy Lithium Pouch Cells and Simulated Model Improvement

In this research, the aim relates to the material characterization of high-energy lithium-ion pouch cells. The development of appropriate model cell behavior is intended to simulate two scenarios: the first is mechanical deformation during a crash and the second is an internal short circuit in lithium-ion cells during the actual effect scenarios. The punch test has been used as a benchmark to analyze the effects of different state of charge conditions on high-energy lithium-ion battery cells. This article explores the impact of three separate factors on the outcomes of mechanical punch indentation experiments. The first parameter analyzed was the degree of prediction brought about by experiments on high-energy cells with two different states of charge (greater and lesser), with four different sizes of indentation punch, from the cell's reaction during the indentation effects on electrolyte. Second, the results of the loading position, middle versus side, are measured at quasi-static speeds. The third parameter was the effect on an electrolyte with a different state of charge. The repeatability of the experiments on punch loading was the last test function analyzed. The test results of a greater than 10% state of charge and less than 10% state of charge were compared to further refine and validate this modeling method. The different loading scenarios analyzed in this study also showed great predictability in the load-displacement reaction and the onset short circuit. A theoretical model of the cell was modified for use in comprehensive mechanical deformation. The overall conclusion found that the loading initiating the cell's electrical short circuit is not instantaneously instigated and it is subsequently used to process the development of a precise and practical computational model that will reduce the chances of the internal short course during the crash.
