Physical Fields Manipulation for High-Performance Perovskite Photovoltaics

Research progress of green antisolvent for perovskite solar cells

Conventional antisolvents such as chlorobenzene and benzotrifluoride are highly toxic and volatile, and therefore not preferred for large-scale fabrication. As such, green antisolvents are favored for the eco-friendly fabrication of perovskite films. This review primarily discusses the impact of various green antisolvents on the fabrication of thin perovskite films and analyzes the main chemical characteristics of these green antisolvents. It also interprets the impact of green antisolvent treatment on crystal growth and nucleation crystallization mechanisms. It introduces the effective fabrication of large-area devices using green antisolvents and analyzes the mechanisms by which green antisolvents enhance device stability. Subsequently, several green antisolvents capable of preparing highly stable and efficient devices are listed. Finally, we outline the key challenges and future prospects of antisolvent treatment. This review paves the way for green fabrication of industrial perovskite solar cells.

Photoinduced Strain in Organometal Halide Perovskites

There is a lack of fundamental understanding of mechano-electro-optical multifield coupling for organometallic halide perovskites (OHPs). In this study, the effect of light irradiation on OHPs' mechanical properties was investigated by atomic force microscopy. In the dark, an MAPbI₃ film was dominated by grains with a Young's modulus of approximately 5.94 GPa, which decreased to 2.97 GPa under light illumination. The photoinduced strain distribution within the polycrystalline MAPbI₃ film was not uniform, and the maximum strain generated inside individual grains was 5.8%. Furthermore, the illumination-induced strain promoted the formation of ferroelastic domains. The Young's modulus of one domain increased from 8.99 to 25.27 GPa, whereas the Young's modulus of an adjacent domain decreased from 14.9 to 1.30 GPa. According to the density-functional-theory calculations, the observed photoinduced strain-promoted variations in mechanical properties were caused by the reversible migration of MA⁺ cations. These findings can help establish the relationship among the mechanical-chemical-optoelectronic characteristics of OHPs.

Rationalization of passivation strategies toward high-performance perovskite solar cells

Lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have shown unprecedented development in efficiency and progressed relentlessly in improving stability. All the achievements have been accompanied by diverse passivation strategies to circumvent the pervasive defects in perovskite materials, which play crucial roles in the process of charge recombination, ion migration, and component degradation. Among the tremendous efforts made to solve these issues and achieve high-performance PSCs, we classify and review both well-established and burgeoning passivation strategies to provide further guidance for the passivation protocols in PSCs, including chemical passivation to eliminate defects by the formation of chemical bonds, physical passivation to eliminate defects by strain relaxation or physical treatments, energetic passivation to improve the stability toward light and oxygen, and field-effect passivation to regulate the interfacial carrier behavior. The subtle but non-trivial consequences from various passivation strategies need advanced characterization techniques combining synchrotron-based X-ray analysis, capacitance-based measurements, spatially resolved imaging, fluorescent molecular probe, Kelvin probe force microscope, etc., to scrutinize the mechanisms. In the end, challenges and prospective research directions on advancing these passivation strategies are proposed. Judicious combinations among chemical, physical, energetic, and field-effect passivation deserve more attention for future high-efficiency and stable perovskite photovoltaics.

Self-Powered Lithium Niobate Thin-Film Photodetectors

Thin-film lithium niobate platform, namely lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI), brings new opportunities for integrated photonics, taking advantages from both outstanding crystalline properties and special structural features. The excellent properties of LNOI have triggered development of a variety of on-chip photonic devices for light generation and manipulation. However, as an indispensable component for photonic circuit with full functionalities, the thin-film photodetector lacks in portfolios of LNOI-based devices due to standing obstacles of low electrical conductivity and poor photoelectric conversion ability. Here, a self-powered broadband LNOI photodetector based on enhanced photovoltaic effect, benefitting from encapsulated plasmonic nanoparticles and doped silver ions, is reported. Maximum responsivity of 0.25 A W^-1 and detectivity (1.56 × 10¹⁴ Jones) are achieved. First-principle calculations and electric-field simulation reveal intrinsic mechanisms and crucial roles of plasmonic nanoparticles and silver ions on photocurrent generation and collection. This work opens an avenue to develop high-performance on-chip LNOI photodetectors, offering a conceivable means toward multiple-functional photonic circuits.
