Core-Shell Nanostructured Ru@Ir-O Electrocatalysts for Superb Oxygen Evolution in Acid

Thermal-Driven Orderly Assembly of Ir-atomic Chains on α-MnO2 with Enhanced Performance for Acidic Oxygen Evolution

The development of acid-stable oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts is essential for high-performance acidic water electrolysis. Herein, we report the results of one-dimensional (1D) nanorods (NRs) IrCeMnO@Ir containing ~20 wt . % Iridium (Ir) as an efficient anode electrocatalyst, synthesized via a one-step cation exchange strategy. Owing to the presence of 1D channels of the nanorod architecture and the unique electronic structure, the IrCeMnO@Ir exhibited 69 folds more mass activity than that of commercial IrO2 as well as over 400 h stability with only a 20 mV increase in overpotential. DFT calculations and control experiments demonstrated that CeO2 serves as an electron buffer to accelerate the kinetics of the rate-determined step for the significantly enhanced activity and suppress the over-oxidation of Ir species as well as their dissolution for impressively promoted stability under practical conditions. Our work opens up a feasible strategy to boost OER activity and stability simultaneously.

Ultrastable and highly active Co-vacancies-enriched IrCo bifunctional nanoalloys for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis

Exploring the electrocatalysts with high intrinsic activity and stability for both anode and cathode to tolerate the extremely acidic condition in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) is crucial for widespread industrial application. Herein, we constructed the bifunctional IrCox nanoalloys with abundant metal vacancies via the combination of chemical reduction and electrochemical treatment for overall water splitting. The developed IrCo0.13 exhibits ultra-low overpotentials of 238 mV for OER and 18.6 mV for HER at 10 mA cm-2 in 0.1 M HClO4, and achieves the exceptional stability of 1000 h for OER and 100 h for HER at 10 mA cm-2. Further, the cell voltage is only 1.68 V to reach a high current density of 1 A cm-2 in PEMWE with IrCo0.13 as the both cathode and anode catalytic layer, and it shows excellent corrosion resistance in acidic environment, evidenced by 415 h stable operation at 1 A cm-2. The strong electronic interactions in the Ir-Co atomic heterostructure and the in-situ generation of Co vacancies by electrochemical oxidation synergistically contribute to the enhanced activity and stability via optimizing the electronic structure of adjacent Ir active sites, enhancing the conductivity and electrochemical active surface area of the catalyst, accelerating charge transfer and kinetics. This work provides a new perspective for designing bifunctional catalysts for practical application in PEMWE.

Locking the lattice oxygen in RuO2 to stabilize highly active Ru sites in acidic water oxidation

Ruthenium dioxide is presently the most active catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media but suffers from severe Ru dissolution resulting from the high covalency of Ru-O bonds triggering lattice oxygen oxidation. Here, we report an interstitial silicon-doping strategy to stabilize the highly active Ru sites of RuO2 while suppressing lattice oxygen oxidation. The representative Si-RuO2-0.1 catalyst exhibits high activity and stability in acid with a negligible degradation rate of ~52 μV h-1 in an 800 h test and an overpotential of 226 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) results demonstrate that the lattice oxygen oxidation pathway of the Si-RuO2-0.1 was suppressed by ∼95% compared to that of commercial RuO2, which is highly responsible for the extraordinary stability. This work supplied a unique mentality to guide future developments on Ru-based oxide catalysts' stability in an acidic environment.

The Promising Seesaw Relationship Between Activity and Stability of Ru-Based Electrocatalysts for Acid Oxygen Evolution and Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

The development of electrocatalysts that are not reliant on iridium for efficient acid-oxygen evolution is a critical step towards the proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) and green hydrogen industry. Ruthenium-based electrocatalysts have garnered widespread attention due to their remarkable catalytic activity and lower commercial price. However, the challenge lies in balancing the seesaw relationship between activity and stability of these electrocatalysts during the acid-oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This review delves into the progress made in Ru-based electrocatalysts with regards to acid OER and PEMWE applications. It highlights the significance of customizing the acidic OER mechanism of Ru-based electrocatalysts through the coordination of adsorption evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) to attain the ideal activity and stability relationship. The promising tradeoffs between the activity and stability of different Ru-based electrocatalysts, including Ru metals and alloys, Ru single-atomic materials, Ru oxides, and derived complexes, and Ru-based heterojunctions, as well as their applicability to PEMWE systems, are discussed in detail. Furthermore, this paper offers insights on in situ control of Ru active sites, dynamic catalytic mechanism, and commercial application of PEMWE. Based on three-way relationship between cost, activity, and stability, the perspectives and development are provided.

Breaking the Activity and Stability Bottlenecks of Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reactions in Acids

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a cornerstone reaction for a variety of electrochemical energy conversion and storage systems such as water splitting, CO2 /N2 reduction, reversible fuel cells, and metal-air batteries. However, OER catalysis in acids suffers from extra sluggish kinetics due to the additional step of water dissociation along with its multiple electron transfer processes. Furthermore, OER catalysts often suffer from poor stability in harsh acidic electrolytes due to the severe dissolution/corrosion processes. The development of active and stable OER catalysts in acids is highly demanded. Here,  the recent advances in OER electrocatalysis in acids are reviewed and the key strategies are summarized to overcome the bottlenecks of activity and stability for both noble-metal-based and noble metal-free catalysts, including i) morphology engineering, ii) composition engineering, and iii) defect engineering. Recent achievements in operando characterization and theoretical calculations are summarized which provide an unprecedented understanding of the OER mechanisms regarding active site identification, surface reconstruction, and degradation/dissolution pathways. Finally, views are offered on the current challenges and opportunities to break the activity-stability relationships for acidic OER in mechanism understanding, catalyst design, as well as standardized stability and activity evaluation for industrial applications such as proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers and beyond.

Preventing the Galvanic Replacement Reaction toward Unconventional Bimetallic Core-Shell Nanostructures

A bimetallic core-shell nanostructure is a versatile platform for achieving intriguing optical and catalytic properties. For a long time, this core-shell nanostructure has been limited to ones with noble metal cores. Otherwise, a galvanic replacement reaction easily occurs, leading to hollow nanostructures or completely disintegrated ones. In the past few years, great efforts have been devoted to preventing the galvanic replacement reaction, thus creating an unconventional class of core-shell nanostructures, each containing a less-stable-metal core and a noble metal shell. These new nanostructures have been demonstrated to show unique optical and catalytic properties. In this work, we first briefly summarize the strategies for synthesizing this type of unconventional core-shell nanostructures, such as the delicately designed thermodynamic control and kinetic control methods. Then, we discuss the effects of the core-shell nanostructure on the stabilization of the core nanocrystals and the emerging optical and catalytic properties. The use of the nanostructure for creating hollow/porous nanostructures is also discussed. At the end of this review, we discuss the remaining challenges associated with this unique core-shell nanostructure and provide our perspectives on the future development of the field.

Unveiling the role of defects in iron oxyhydroxide for oxygen evolution

Development of earth-abundant and robust oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is imperative for cost-effective hydrogen production via water electrolysis. Herein, we report ultrafine iron (oxy)hydroxide nanoparticles with average particle size of 2.6 nm and abundant surface defects homogeneously supported on oleum-treated graphite (FeO_x(n)@HG-T), providing abundant active sites for the OER. The optimal FeO_x(0.03)@HG-110 exhibits high electrocatalytic OER activity and excellent stability. Electrochemical testing results and theoretical calculations reveal that the outstanding OER activity of FeO_x(0.03)@HG-110 is due to its stronger charge transfer ability and lower OER energy barrier than defect-free FeO_x nanoparticles. This work demonstrates that the OER performance of oxyhydroxide-based electrocatalysts can be improved by surface defect engineering.

Ir Nanoparticles Anchored on Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Overall Water Splitting under pH-Universal Conditions

The construction of high-activity and low-cost electrocatalysts is critical for efficient hydrogen production by water electrolysis. Herein, we developed an advanced electrocatalyst by anchoring well-dispersed Ir nanoparticles on nickel metal-organic framework (MOF) Ni-NDC (NDC: 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic) nanosheets. Benefiting from the strong synergy between Ir and MOF through interfacial Ni-O-Ir bonds, the synthesized Ir@Ni-NDC showed exceptional electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and overall water splitting in a wide pH range, superior to commercial benchmarks and most reported electrocatalysts. Theoretical calculations revealed that the charge redistribution of Ni-O-Ir bridge induced the optimization of H₂ O, OH* and H* adsorption, thus leading to the accelerated electrochemical kinetics for HER and OER. This work provides a new clue to exploit bifunctional electrocatalysts for pH-universal overall water splitting.

Catalyst-Support Interactions Promoted Acidic Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution Catalysis: A Mini Review

In the context of the growing human demand for green secondary energy sources, proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is necessary to meet the high-efficiency production of high-purity hydrogen required for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The development of stable, efficient, and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is key to promoting the large-scale application of hydrogen production by PEMWE. At present, precious metals remain irreplaceable in acidic OER catalysis, and loading the support body with precious metal components is undoubtedly an effective strategy to reduce costs. In this review, we will discuss the unique role of common catalyst-support interactions such as Metal-Support Interactions (MSIs), Strong Metal-Support Interactions (SMSIs), Strong Oxide-Support Interactions (SOSIs), and Electron-Metal-Support Interactions (EMSIs) in modulating catalyst structure and performance, thereby promoting the development of high-performance, high-stability, low-cost noble metal-based acidic OER catalysts.

Modulating crystal and electronic structure of NiFe-MOFs by inorganic acid for highly efficient electrochemical water oxidation

Seeking new methods to modulate the structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for diverse applications, particularly for water splitting, is intensively urgent but challenging. Herein, a simple hydrothermal method employing HCl as the modulator is developed to synthesize a series of NiFe-MOF-n/NF. The amount of HCl modulator not only changes the elemental composition and crystal structure but also modulates the electronic structure of NiFe-MOF-n/NF, thus improving intrinsic activity. Owing to the synergetic interactions between Ni and Fe atoms, free-standing feature, the optimized NiFe-MOF-2/NF yields excellent OER activity with overpotentials of 209 and 260 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm^-2, respectively, a small Tafel slope of 36.4 mV dec^-1 and excellent OER stability for 24 h at 100 mA cm^-2 in 1 M KOH. This demonstrates that NiFe-MOF-2/NF are in situ converted into metal oxide/oxyhydroxide after OER, thereby serving as the real active sites. This study offers a feasible way to fabricate low-cost, efficient MOF-based electrocatalysts.

Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysts for the Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer: Challenges on Stability

Hydrogen generated by proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer holds a promising potential to complement the traditional energy structure and achieve the global target of carbon neutrality for its efficient, clean, and sustainable nature. The acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), owing to its sluggish kinetic process, remains a bottleneck that dominates the efficiency of overall water splitting. Over the past few decades, tremendous efforts have been devoted to exploring OER activity, whereas most show unsatisfying stability to meet the demand for industrial application of PEM electrolyzer. In this review, systematic considerations of the origin and strategies based on OER stability challenges are focused on. Intrinsic deactivation of the material and the extrinsic balance of plant-induced destabilization are summarized. Accordingly, rational strategies for catalyst design including doping and leaching, support effect, coordination effect, strain engineering, phase and facet engineering are discussed for their contribution to the promoted OER stability. Moreover, advanced in situ/operando characterization techniques are put forward to shed light on the OER pathways as well as the structural evolution of the OER catalyst, giving insight into the deactivation mechanisms. Finally, outlooks toward future efforts on the development of long-term and practical electrocatalysts for the PEM electrolyzer are provided.
