Controlled Self-Assembly of Hollow Core-Shell FeMn/CoNi Prussian Blue Analogs with Boosted Electrocatalytic Activity

Gold brocade coated CoFe PBA with enhanced peroxidase-like activity for a chemiluminescent imaging immunoassay

Traditional chemiluminescence (CL) imaging immunoassays usually rely on natural enzymes as catalytic probes, which has hampered their extensive application due to the susceptibility to inactivation of natural enzymes. In response, a gold brocade coated CoFe Prussian blue analogue (CoFe PBA@Au brocade) with enhanced peroxidase-like activity was synthesized and utilized as a powerful label probe for constructing a highly sensitive CL imaging immunosensor targeting disease biomarkers with excellent performance. This research offers a universal strategy for enhancing the sensitivity of CL imaging immunoassays and further expands the application of PBA nanozymes.

Self-Sustained-Release Strategy Realizes Colloid Oriented Assembly to Fabricate Prussian Blue with Hierarchical Structure

The controlled self-assembly of nanomaterials has been a great challenge in nanosynthesis, especially for hierarchical architectures with high complexity. Particularly, the structural design of Prussian blue (PB) series materials with robustness and fast nucleation is even more difficult. Herein, a self-sustained-release strategy based on the slow release of metal ions from coordination ions is proposed to guide the assembly of PB crystals. The key to this strategy is the slow release by ligand, which can create ultra-low concentrations of metal ions so as to provide the possibility to realize the surface charge manipulation of PB primary colloids. By adding electrolyte or changing the polarity of the solution, the surface charge regulation of PB colloid is realized, and the PB hierarchical structures with branch fractal structure (PB-BS), octahedral fractal structure, and spherical fractal structure are effectively constructed. This work not only achieves the designability of the PB structure, but also synchronizes the functionalization during the PB assembly growth process by in situ encapsulation of the effective catalytic active component L-Ascorbic acid. As a result, the assembled PB-BS exhibits greatly enhanced catalytic activity and selectivity in styrene oxidation with the selectivity of oxidized styrene increasing from 35.6% (PB) to 80.5% (PB-BS).

Modulating the pore and electronic structure for targeted recovery of platinum: Accelerated kinetic and reinforced coordination

Adsorption for recovery of low-concentration platinum (Pt) from the complex composition of acidic digestates was challenging because of slow kinetic and poor affinity. It was expected to be overcome by the improvement of pore size distribution and adsorption site activity. Herein, a series of Prussian blue etchings (PBE) with porosity-rich and activity-high cyano (CN) was synthesized to recover low-concentration Pt. The N2 isotherm results showed that the pore structure evolved from mesoporous to microporous. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations results revealed that the modulation of electronic structure converted FeII to FeIII in [FeII(CN)6]4-. The coexistence of micro- and meso-pore structures provided channels to accelerate adsorption and ensured PtII enrichment. The regulation of Fe valence state activated CN, which reinforced the strength of coordination interaction between Pt and Fe-CN- at N-atom. The adsorption rate and maximum capacity of PBE1 were 4.4 and 2.5 times higher than those of PB, respectively, due to the dual efficacy of accelerated kinetic and reinforced coordination. This study systematically analyzes the pivotal role of pore and electronic structure modulation in adsorption kinetic and affinity, which provides a novel strategy for PtII targeted recovery.

Construction of CoNi2S4/Co9S8@Co4S3 nanocubes derived from Ni-Co prussian blue analogues@cobalt carbonate hydroxide core-shell heterostructure for asymmetric supercapacitor

Construction of Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) with heterostructure is beneficial to preparing PBAs derivatives with superior electrochemical performance. In this work, the core-shell nanostructured nanocubes composed of nickel hexacyanocobalt PBA (NiCo-PBA)@cobalt carbonate hydroxide (CCH) are synthesized through an in-situ epitaxial growth strategy, and the formation mechanisms of coating are carefully validated and specifically discussed. Then, the precursors are successfully transformed into hierarchical CoNi2S4/Co9S8@Co4S3 via the gas-phase vulcanization method. Benefiting from the intriguing heterostructure and multicomponent sulfides, the CoNi2S4/Co9S8@Co4S3-80 electrode exhibits a high specific capacity of 799 ± 16C/g (specific capacitance of 1595 ± 31F/g) at 1 A/g, ultra-high capacity retention of 80 % at a high current density of 20 A/g. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device delivers a high energy density of 43.3 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 899 W kg-1 and exhibits superior cycling stability with the capacity retention of 88 % after 5,000 cycles. Subsequently, the fabricated all-solid-state ASC device shows an excellent energy density of 36.4 Wh kg-1 with a power density of 824 W kg-1. This work proposing rational design of combining multicomponent sulfides and core-shell heterostructure based on PBA nanocubes opens up a novel route for developing asymmetric supercapacitor electrode materials with superior performance.

Interface Charge Distribution Engineering of Pd-CeO2 /C for Efficient Carbohydrazide Oxidation Reaction

Carbohydrazide electrooxidation reaction (COR) is a potential alternative to oxygen evolution reaction in water splitting process. However, the sluggish kinetics process impels to develop efficient catalysts with the aim of the widespread use of such catalytic system. Since COR concerns the adsorption/desorption of reactive species on catalysts, the electronic structure of electrocatalyst can affect the catalytic activity. Interface charge distribution engineering can be considered to be an efficient strategy for improving catalytic performance, which facilitates the cleavage of chemical bond. Herein, highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles on CeO2 /C catalyst are prepared and the COR catalytic performance is investigated. The self-driven charge transfer between Pd and CeO2 can form the local nucleophilic and electrophilic region, promoting to the adsorption of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating group in carbohydrazide molecule, which facilitates the cleavage of C-N bond and the carbohydrazide oxidation. Due to the local charge distribution, the Pd-CeO2 /C exhibits superior COR catalytic activity with a potential of 0.27 V to attain 10 mA cm-2 . When this catalyst is used for energy-efficient electrolytic hydrogen production, the carbohydrazide electrolysis configuration exhibits a low cell voltage (0.6 V at 10 mA cm-2 ). This interface charge distribution engineering can provide a novel strategy for improving COR catalytic activity.

Enhancing Oxygen Evolution Reaction Performance in Prussian Blue Analogues: Triple-Play of Metal Exsolution, Hollow Interiors, and Anionic Regulation

Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) are promising catalysts for green hydrogen production. However, the rational design of high-performing PBAs is challenging, which requires an in-depth understanding of the catalytic mechanism. Here FeMn@CoNi core-shell PBAs are employed as precursors, together with Se powders, in low-temperature pyrolysis in an argon atmosphere. This synthesis method enables the partial dissociation of inner FeMn PBAs that results in hollow interiors, Ni nanoparticles (NPs) exsolution to the surface, and Se incorporation onto the PBA shell. The resulting material presents ultralow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential (184 mV at 10 mA cm-2 ) and low Tafel slope (43.4 mV dec-1 ), outperforming leading-edge PBA-based electrocatalysts. The mechanism responsible for such a high OER activity is revealed, assisted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and the surface examination before and after the OER process. The exsolved Ni NPs are found to help turn the PBAs into Se-doped core-shell metal oxyhydroxides during the OER, in which the heterojunction with Ni and the Se incorporation are combined to improve the OER kinetics. This work shows that efficient OER catalysts could be developed by using a novel synthesis method backed up by a sound understanding and control of the catalytic pathway.

Iron-Cobalt-Cerium Multimetallic Oxides Derived from Prussian Blue Precursors: Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Exploring non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts is still challenging in 21^st century. In this work, a series of hexagonal bipyramidal Ce-based PBA materials as precursors with different Fe/Co metal ratios, namely as CeFe_x Co_1-x -PBA, are successfully constructed via co-precipitation method and converted into corresponding metal oxides (denoted as Fe_x Co_1-x CeO_y ) via thermal treatment. Then, they as electrocatalysts realize highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Especially, as-synthesized Fe_0.7 Co_0.3 CeO_y electrocatalyst shows very low overpotentials of 320 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and the Tafel slop of 98.4 mV dec^-1 in 1 M KOH with remarkable durability for 24 h, which was due to the synergistic effect of multi-metal FeCoCe centers. Furthermore, a two-electrode cell of Fe_0.7 Co_0.3 CeO_y /NF||Pt/C/NF realizes outstanding overall water splitting with a voltage of only 1.71 V at 10 mA cm^-2 and remarkable long-term durability, that is even superior to benchmark IrO₂ /NF||Pt/C/NF counterpart.
