Green and Scalable Template-Free Strategy to Fabricate Honeycomb-Like Interconnected Porous Micro-Sized Layered Sb for High-Performance Potassium Storage

3D Dense Encapsulated Architecture of 2D Bi Nanosheets Enabling Potassium-Ion Storage with Superior Volumetric and Areal Capacities

2D alloy-based anodes show promise in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Nevertheless, their low tap density and huge volume expansion cause insufficient volumetric capacity and cycling stability. Herein, a 3D highly dense encapsulated architecture of 2D-Bi nanosheets (HD-Bi@G) with conducive elastic networks and 3D compact encapsulation structure of 2D nano-sheets are developed. As expected, HD-Bi@G anode exhibits a considerable volumetric capacity of 1032.2 mAh cm-3, stable long-life span with 75% retention after 2000 cycles, superior rate capability of 271.0 mAh g-1 at 104 C, and high areal capacity of 7.94 mAh cm-2 (loading: 24.2 mg cm-2) in PIBs. The superior volumetric and areal performance mechanisms are revealed through systematic kinetic investigations, ex situ characterization techniques, and theorical calculation. The 3D high-conductivity elastic network with dense encapsulated 2D-Bi architecture effectively relieves the volume expansion and pulverization of Bi nanosheets, maintains internal 2D structure with fast kinetics, and overcome sluggish ionic/electronic diffusion obstacle of ultra-thick, dense electrodes. The uniquely encapsulated 2D-nanosheet structure greatly reduces K+ diffusion energy barrier and accelerates K+ diffusion kinetics. These findings validate a feasible approach to fabricate 3D dense encapsulated architectures of 2D-alloy nanosheets with conductive elastic networks, enabling the design of ultra-thick, dense electrodes for high-volumetric-energy-density energy storage.

Recent advances in rational design for high-performance potassium-ion batteries

The growing global energy demand necessitates the development of renewable energy solutions to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. To efficiently utilize renewable yet intermittent energy sources such as solar and wind power, there is a critical need for large-scale energy storage systems (EES) with high electrochemical performance. While lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been successfully used for EES, the surging demand and price, coupled with limited supply of crucial metals like lithium and cobalt, raised concerns about future sustainability. In this context, potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have emerged as promising alternatives to commercial LIBs. Leveraging the low cost of potassium resources, abundant natural reserves, and the similar chemical properties of lithium and potassium, PIBs exhibit excellent potassium ion transport kinetics in electrolytes. This review starts from the fundamental principles and structural regulation of PIBs, offering a comprehensive overview of their current research status. It covers cathode materials, anode materials, electrolytes, binders, and separators, combining insights from full battery performance, degradation mechanisms, in situ/ex situ characterization, and theoretical calculations. We anticipate that this review will inspire greater interest in the development of high-efficiency PIBs and pave the way for their future commercial applications.

Review: Application of Bionic-Structured Materials in Solid-State Electrolytes for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) have gained significant attention in energy storage research due to their high energy density and significantly improved safety. But there are still certain problems with lithium dendrite growth, interface stability, and room-temperature practicality. Nature continually inspires human development and intricate design strategies to achieve optimal structural applications. Innovative solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), inspired by diverse natural species, have demonstrated exceptional physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. This review provides an overview of typical bionic-structured materials in SSEs, particularly those mimicking plant and animal structures, with a focus on their latest advancements in applications of solid-state lithium metal batteries. Commencing from plant structures encompassing roots, trunks, leaves, flowers, fruits, and cellular levels, the detailed influence of biomimetic strategies on SSE design and electrochemical performance are presented in this review. Subsequently, the recent progress of animal-inspired nanostructures in SSEs is summarized, including layered structures, surface morphologies, and interface compatibility in both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) aspects. Finally, we also evaluate the current challenges and provide a concise outlook on future research directions. We anticipate that the review will provide useful information for future reference regarding the design of bionic-structured materials in SSEs.

Novel Ultra-Stable 2D SbBi Alloy Structure with Precise Regulation Ratio Enables Long-Stable Potassium/Lithium-Ion Storage

The inferior cycling stabilities or low capacities of 2D Sb or Bi limit their applications in high-capacity and long-stability potassium/lithium-ion batteries (PIBs/LIBs). Therefore, integrating the synergy of high-capacity Sb and high-stability Bi to fabricate 2D binary alloys is an intriguing and challenging endeavor. Herein, a series of novel 2D binary SbBi alloys with different atomic ratios are fabricated using a simple one-step co-replacement method. Among these fabricated alloys, the 2D-Sb0.6 Bi0.4 anode exhibits high-capacity and ultra-stable potassium and lithium storage performance. Particularly, the 2D-Sb0.6 Bi0.4 anode has a high-stability capacity of 381.1 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 0.2 A g-1 (≈87.8% retention) and an ultra-long-cycling stability of 1000 cycles (0.037% decay per cycle) at 1.0 A g-1 in PIBs. Besides, the superior lithium and potassium storage mechanism is revealed by kinetic analysis, in-situ/ex-situ characterization techniques, and theoretical calculations. This mainly originates from the ultra-stable structure and synergistic interaction within the 2D-binary alloy, which significantly alleviates the volume expansion, enhances K+ adsorption energy, and decreases the K+ diffusion energy barrier compared to individual 2D-Bi or 2D-Sb. This study verifies a new scalable design strategy for creating 2D binary (even ternary) alloys, offering valuable insights into their fundamental mechanisms in rechargeable batteries.

Synthesis of Sb-pyromellitic acid metal-organic framework material and its sodium storage properties

Developing electrode materials with high capacity and low cost is crucial for promoting the application of sodium-ion batteries. In this paper, a new Sb-PMA-300 metal-organic framework (MOF) material is synthesized by chelation of Sb³⁺ and pyromellitic acid (PMA) followed by a heat treatment at 300 °C. As anodes for sodium-ion batteries, the Sb-PMA-300 composite exhibits a stable capacity of 443 mA h g^-1 at a current density of 0.1 A g^-1. At a current density of 1 A g^-1, the discharge capacity is maintained at 326.4 mA h g^-1 after 200 cycles. The electrode process dynamics of this material are mainly controlled by diffusion. The values of the diffusion coefficient of Na⁺ are between 10^-12 and 3.0 × 10^-10 cm² s^-1 during discharging, while they are between 10^-12 and 5.0 × 10^-11 cm² s^-1 during charging. The excellent cycle stability is attributed to the special structure of the MOF material, where the organic ligand prevents the aggregation of Sb alloy particles and buffers the tension resulting from volume variation.

In-situ decoration of tin sulfide on Niobium carbide MXene with robust electronic coupling for improved sodium storage performance

Tin sulfide (SnS) has been considered as one of the most promising sodium storage materials because of its excellent electrochemical activity, low cost, and low-dimensional structure. However, owing to the serious volume change upon discharging/charging and poor electronic conductivity, the SnS-based electrodes often suffer from electrode pulverization and sluggish reaction kinetics, thus resulting in serious capacity fading and degraded rate capability. In this work, SnS nanoparticles uniformly distributed on the surface of the layered Niobium carbide MXene (SnS/Nb₂CT_x) were fabricated through a facile solvothermal approach followed by calcination, endowing the SnS/Nb₂CT_x with a three-dimensional interconnected framework as well as fast charge transfer. Benefitting from the excellent electronic/ionic conductivity, efficient buffering matrix, abundant active sites, and high sodium storage activity inherited from the structure design, the robust electronic coupling between SnS nanoparticle and Nb₂CT_x MXene results in excellent electrochemical output, which demonstrates superior reversible capacities of 479.6 (0.1 A/g up to 100 cycles) and 278.9 mAh/g (0.5 A/g up to 500 cycles) upon sodium storage, respectively. The excellent electrochemical performance manifests the promise of the combination of metal sulfides with Nb₂CT_x MXene to fabricate high-performance electrodes for sodium storage.

Recent Advances in Black TiO2 Nanomaterials for Solar Energy Conversion

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanomaterials have been widely used in photocatalytic energy conversion and environmental remediation due to their advantages of low cost, chemical stability, and relatively high photo-activity. However, applications of TiO₂ have been restricted in the ultraviolet range because of the wide band gap. Broadening the light absorption of TiO₂ nanomaterials is an efficient way to improve the photocatalytic activity. Thus, black TiO₂ with extended light response range in the visible light and even near infrared light has been extensively exploited as efficient photocatalysts in the last decade. This review represents an attempt to conclude the recent developments in black TiO₂ nanomaterials synthesized by modified treatment, which presented different structure, morphological features, reduced band gap, and enhanced solar energy harvesting efficiency. Special emphasis has been given to the newly developed synthetic methods, porous black TiO₂, and the approaches for further improving the photocatalytic activity of black TiO₂. Various black TiO₂, doped black TiO₂, metal-loaded black TiO₂ and black TiO₂ heterojunction photocatalysts, and their photocatalytic applications and mechanisms in the field of energy and environment are summarized in this review, to provide useful insights and new ideas in the related field.
