Defect-Rich Single Atom Catalyst Enhanced Polysulfide Conversion Kinetics to Upgrade Performance of Li-S Batteries

Pressure-Dependent CO2 Electroreduction to Methane over Asymmetric Cu-N2 Single-Atom Sites

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with unitary active sites hold great promise for realizing high selectivity toward a single product in the CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR). However, achieving high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of multielectron products like methane on SACs is still challenging. Herein, we report a pressure-regulating strategy that achieves 83.5 ± 4% FE for the CO2-to-CH4 conversion on the asymmetric Cu-N2 sites, representing one of the best CO2-to-CH4 performances. Elevated CO2 pressure was demonstrated as an efficient way to inhibit the hydrogen evolution reaction via promoting the competing adsorption of reactant CO2, regardless of the nature of the active sites. Meanwhile, the asymmetric Cu-N2 structure could endow the Cu sites with stronger electronic coupling with *CO, thus suppressing the desorption of *CO and facilitating the following hydrogenation of *CO to *CHO. This work provides a synergetic strategy of the pressure-induced reaction environment regulating and the electronic structure modulating for selective CO2RR toward targeted products.

Advances in Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries based on Conversion Mechanism: Challenges, Strategies, and Prospects

Recently, aqueous zinc-ion batteries with conversion mechanisms have received wide attention in energy storage systems on account of excellent specific capacity, high power density, and energy density. Unfortunately, some characteristics of cathode material, zinc anode, and electrolyte still limit the development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries possessing conversion mechanism. Consequently, this paper provides a detailed summary of the development for numerous aqueous zinc-based batteries: zinc-sulfur (Zn-S) batteries, zinc-selenium (Zn-Se) batteries, zinc-tellurium (Zn-Te) batteries, zinc-iodine (Zn-I2) batteries, and zinc-bromine (Zn-Br2) batteries. Meanwhile, the reaction conversion mechanism of zinc-based batteries with conversion mechanism and the research progress in the investigation of composite cathode, zinc anode materials, and selection of electrolytes are systematically introduced. Finally, this review comprehensively describes the prospects and outlook of aqueous zinc-ion batteries with conversion mechanism, aiming to promote the rapid development of aqueous zinc-based batteries.

Nitrogen-Doped CoP with optimized d-Band center as bidirectional electrocatalyst for high areal capacity of Li-S battery

Lithium polysulfide (LiPSs) shuttle effect and difficulties with Li2S oxidation are hinder the marketization of lithium-sulfur batteries. We suggest using a bidirectional catalyst in the sulfur host to solve these problems. We produced a nitrogen-doped cobalt phosphide (N-CoP@NC) as a sulfur carrier in this work. The introduction of nitrogen into cobalt phosphide enhances the electron transmission speed and forms shorter Co-N bonds. As a result, new defect energy levels are introduced, leading to an increase in the charge number of Co central atoms, which abate the Li-S and SS bonds in Li2S and Li2S4, thereby promoting the oxidation of Li2S during charging, as well as the alteration process of LiPSs during charge and discharge. Additionally, the crystal flaws that result in increased Co-S bond formation help to boost polysulfides' adsorption ability. The Li-S batteries shows outstanding cyclability when paired with this electrocatalyst, demonstrating a minimal capacity degradation rate of only 0.07 % per cycle over 500 cycles at a rate of 0.5C. As a result, incorporating anion doping in the host emerges as a promising method for crafting materials tailored for Li-S batteries.

Engineering of single atomic Fe-N4 sites on hollow carbon cages to achieve highly reversible MoS2 anodes for Li-ion batteries

Although the single atom electrocatalysts have been demonstrated as efficient catalysts for promoting Li2S/Na2S formation and decomposition in Li-S/Na-S batteries, the functional morphological and structural engineering capable of exposing more active sites is regarded as an essential factor to further enhance the catalytic activity. Here, we have synthesized a single atomically dispersed Fe sites embedded within hollow nitrogen doped carbon cages (Fe-N-HCN) using Fe3O4 spheres as an oxidant and sacrificial template, which is used as a high-efficiency catalyst for boosting the reversible capacity of MoS2 anode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). As expected, the electrochemical reaction of MoS2/Fe-N-HCN anode exhibits higher reversibility than pure MoS2 electrodes. Moreover, density functional theory is also employed to reveal that Fe-N-HCN can be effectively adsorbed and catalyze the rapid decomposition of Li2S. The hollow carbon cage structure can facilitate the exposure of the active Fe-N4 sites and favor the mass transfer during the electrochemical reactions, thus the synergistic effect of the Fe-N4 site and the hollow carbon cage structure together improve the catalytic activity for the conversion reaction of MoS2 anode.

Hyphae Carbon Coupled with Gel Composite Assembly for Construction of Advanced Carbon/Sulfur Cathodes for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The design and fabrication of novel carbon hosts with high conductivity, accelerated electrochemical catalytic activities, and superior physical/chemical confinement on sulfur and its reaction intermediates polysulfides are essential for the construction of high-performance C/S cathodes for lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). In this work, a novel biofermentation coupled gel composite assembly technology is developed to prepare cross-linked carbon composite hosts consisting of conductive Rhizopus hyphae carbon fiber (RHCF) skeleton and lamellar sodium alginate carbon (SAC) uniformly implanted with polarized nanoparticles (V2O3, Ag, Co, etc.) with diameters of several nanometers. Impressively, the RHCF/SAC/V2O3 composites exhibit enhanced physical/chemical adsorption of polysulfides due to the synergistic effect between hierarchical pore structures, heteroatoms (N, P) doping, and polar V2O3 generation. Additionally, the catalytic conversion kinetics of cathodes are effectively improved by regulating the 3D carbon structure and optimizing the V2O3 catalyst. Consequently, the LSBs assembled with RHCF/SAC/V2O3-S cathode show exceptional cycle stability (capacity retention rate of 94.0% after 200 cycles at 0.1 C) and excellent rate performance (specific capacity of 578 mA h g-1 at 5 C). This work opens a new door for the fabrication of hyphae carbon composites via fermentation for electrochemical energy storage.

Nonmetallic-Bonding Fe-Mn Diatomic Pairs Anchored on Hollow Carbonaceous Nanodisks for High-Performance Li-S Battery

The issues of polysulfide shuttling and lethargic sulfur redox reaction (SROR) kinetics are the toughest obstacles of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery. Herein, integrating the merits of increased density of metal sites and synergistic catalytic effect, a unique single-atom catalyst (SAC) with nonmetallic-bonding Fe-Mn diatomic pairs anchored on hollow nitrogen-doped carbonaceous nanodisk (denoted as FeMnDA@NC) is successfully constructed and well characterized by aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, etc. Density functional theory calculation indicates that the Fe-Mn diatomic pairs can effectively inhibit the shuttle effect by enhancing the adsorption ability retarding the polysulfide migration and accelerate the SROR kinetics. As a result, the Li-S battery assembled with FeMnDA@NC modified separator possesses an excellent electrochemical performance with ultrahigh specific capacities of 1419 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and 885 mAh g-1 at 3.0 C, respectively. An outstanding specific capacity of 1165 mAh g-1 is achieved at 1.0 C and maintains at 731 mAh g-1 after 700 cycles. Notably, the assembled Li-S battery with a high sulfur loading of 5.35 mg cm-2 harvests a practical areal capacity of 5.70 mAh cm-2 at 0.2 C. A new perspective is offered here to construct advanced SACs suitable for the Li-S battery.

Porous N-Doped Carbon Decorated with Atomically Dispersed Independent Dual Metal Sites from Energetic Zeolite Imidazolate Frameworks as Bidirectional Catalysts for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity and energy density, which are considered to be very promising energy storage devices. However, the slow redox kinetics of polysulfides are the main reason for the rapid capacity decay of Li-S batteries. A reasonable electrocatalyst for the Li-S battery should reduce the reaction barrier and accelerate the reaction kinetics of the bidirectional catalytic conversion of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), thereby reducing the cumulative concentration of LiPSs in the electrolyte. In this report, porous N-doped carbon nanofibers decorated with independent dual metal sites as catalysts for Li-S batteries were fabricated in one step using a fusion-foaming method. Experimental and theoretical analyses demonstrate that the synergistic effect of independent dual metal sites provides strong LiPS affinity, improved electronic conductivity, and enhanced redox kinetics of polysulfides. Therefore, the assembled Li-S battery exhibits high rate performance (discharge specific capacity of 771 mA h g-1 at 2C) and excellent cycle stability (capacity decay rate of 0.51% after 1000 cycles at 1C).

Synergistic catalytic conversion and chemisorption of polysulfides from Fe/Fe3C/FeN0.0324 nanocubes modified separator for advanced Li-S batteries

Lithium sulfur batteries (LSBs) have been considered as one of the most promising options for next generation high-performance batteries. However, the heavy shuttle effect and inferior redox conversion during the charge/discharge processes of the batteries have greatly hindered their further applications. In this study, to address these disadvantages of LSBs, Fe/Fe3C/FeN0.0324 heterostructured nanocubes were designed and prepared through high temperature carbonization process using Prussian blue precursor. Then the Fe/Fe3C/FeN0.0324 nanocubes were used to modify the commercial polypropylene (PP) separator, which can greatly catalyze the redox transformation of polysulfides and provide sufficient active sites for chemisorption. As result, the modified separator endowed LSBs with excellent rate capacity and cycle stability, delivering a high-capacity of 1025 mAh/g at 0.5 C with nearly 100% coulombic efficiency. It also displayed a superb cycling performance with a per-cycle capacity attenuation rate of 0.09% after 300 cycles. When the current density increased to 1 C with the S loading of 1.73 mg cm-2, Fe/Fe3C/FeN0.0324-PP separator presented a satisfactory capacity decay rate of 0.05% per cycle after 1000 cycles. Besides, it also presented outstanding electrochemical performance even at high sulfur loading of 4.5 mg cm-2. This work has provided a new avenue for the design of nanomaterials with synergistic effect of catalytic conversion and chemisorption of polysulfides for the promotion of high-performance Li-S batteries.

Single-atom site catalysis in Li-S batteries

With their high theoretical energy density, Li-S batteries are regarded as the ideal battery system for next generation electrochemical energy storage. In the last 15 years, Li-S batteries have made outstanding academic progress. Recently, research studies have placed more emphasis on their practical application aspects, which puts forward strict requirements for the loading of S cathodes and the amount of electrolytes. To meet the above requirements, electrode catalysis design is of crucial significance. Among all the catalysts, single-atom site catalysts (SASCs) are considered to be ideal catalyst materials for the commercialization of Li-S batteries due to their high activity and highest utilization of catalytic sites. This perspective introduces the kinetic mechanism of S cathodes, the basic concept and synthesis strategy of SASCs, and then systematically summarizes the research progress of SASCs for S cathodes and, the related functional interlayers/separators in recent years. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of SASCs in Li-S batteries are summarized and prospected.

Effect of Heterostructure-Modified Separator in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with high energy density and low cost are the most promising competitor in the next generation of new energy reserve devices. However, there are still many problems that hinder its commercialization, mainly including shuttle of soluble polysulfides, slow reaction kinetics, and growth of Li dendrites. In order to solve above issues, various explorations have been carried out for various configurations, such as electrodes, separators, and electrolytes. Among them, the separator in contact with both anode and cathode is in a particularly special position. Reasonable design-modified material of separator can solve above key problems. Heterostructure engineering as a promising modification method can combine characteristics of different materials to generate synergistic effect at heterogeneous interface that is conducive to Li-S electrochemical behavior. This review not only elaborates the role of heterostructure-modified separators in dealing with above problems, but also analyzes the improvement of wettability and thermal stability of separators by modification of heterostructure materials, systematically clarifies its advantages, and summarizes some related progress in recent years. Finally, future development direction of heterostructure-based separator in Li-S batteries is given.

Vanadium as Auxiliary for Fe-V Dual-Atom Electrocatalyst in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries: "3D in 2D" Morphology Inducer and Coordination Structure Regulator

The undesirable shuttling behavior, the sluggish redox kinetics of liquid-solid transformation, and the large energy barrier for decomposition of Li2S have been the recognized problems impeding the practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries. Herein, inspired by the spectacular catalytic activity of the Fe/V center in bioenzyme for nitrogen/sulfur fixation, we design an integrated electrocatalyst comprising N-bridged Fe-V dual-atom active sites (Fe/V-N7) dispersed on ingenious "3D in 2D" carbon nanosheets (denoted as DAC), in which vanadium induces the laminar structure and regulates the coordination configuration of active centers simultaneously, realizing the redistribution of the 3d-orbital electrons of Fe centers. The high coupling/conjunction between Fe/V 3d electrons and S 2p electrons shows strong affinity and enhanced reactivity of DAC-Li2Sn (1 ≤ n ≤ 8) systems. Thus, DAC presents strengthened chemisorption ability toward polysulfides and significantly boosts bidirectional sulfur redox reaction kinetics, which have been evidenced theoretically and experimentally. Besides, the well-designed "3D in 2D" morphology of DAC enables uniform sulfur distribution, facilitated electron transfer, and abundant active sites exposure. Therefore, the assembled Li-S cells present outstanding cycling stability (637.3 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 1 C) and high rate capability (711 mAh g-1 at 4 C) under high sulfur content (70 wt %).

Defect-engineered Sulfur Vacancy Modified NiCo2 S4-x Nanosheet Anchoring Polysulfide for Improved Lithium Sulfur Batteries

The low conductivity of sulfur and the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) are the two intrinsic obstacles that limit the application of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Herein, a sulfur vacancy introduced NiCo2 S4 nanosheet array grown on carbon nanofiber (CNF) membrane (NiCo2 S4-x /CNF) is proposed to serve as a self-supporting and binder-free interlayer in LSBs. The conductive CNF skeleton with a non-woven structure can effectively reduce the resistance of the cathode and accommodate volume expansion during charge-discharge process. The bonding between CNF matrix and NiCo2 S4 nanosheet is enhanced by in situ growth, ensuring fast electron transfer. Besides, the sulfur vacancies in NiCo2 S4 enhance the chemisorption of LiPSs, and the highly active sites at vacancies can accelerate the LiPSs conversion kinetics. LSB paired with NiCo2 S4-x /CNF interlayer achieved improved stability in 500 cycles at 0.2 C and long life of 3000 cycles at 3 C. More importantly, a high areal capacity of 9.69 mAh cm-2 is achieved with a sulfur loading of 10.8 mg cm-2 and a low electrolyte to sulfur (E/S) ratio of 4.8. This work provides insight into the sulfur vacancy in catalysis design for LiPSs conversion and demonstrates a promising direction for electronic defect engineering in material design for LSBs.

A Transmetalation Synthetic Strategy to Engineer Atomically Dispersed MnN2 O2 Electrocatalytic Centers Driving High-Performance LiS Battery

Sluggish sulfur redox reaction (SROR) kinetics accompanying lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttle effect becomes a stumbling block for commercial application of LiS battery. High-efficient single atom catalysts (SACs) are desired to improve the SROR conversion capability; however, the sparse active sites as well as partial sites encapsulated in bulk-phase are fatal to the catalytic performance. Herein, high loading (5.02 wt.%) atomically dispersed manganese sites (MnSA) on hollow nitrogen-doped carbonaceous support (HNC) are realized for the MnSA@HNC SAC by a facile transmetalation synthetic strategy. The thin-walled hollow structure (≈12 nm) anchoring the unique trans-MnN2 O2 sites of MnSA@HNC provides a shuttle buffer zone and catalytic conversion site for LiPSs. Both electrochemical measurement and theoretical calculation indicate that the MnSA@HNC with abundant trans-MnN2 O2 sites have extremely high bidirectional SROR catalytic activity. The assembled LiS battery based on the MnSA@HNC modified separator can deliver a large specific capacity of 1422 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and stable cycling over 1400 cycles with an ultralow decay rate of 0.033% per cycle at 1 C. More impressively, a flexible pouch cell on account of the MnSA@HNC modified separator may release a high initial specific capacity of 1192 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and uninterruptedly work after the bending-unbending processes.
