Thickness-Independent Capacitive Performance of Holey Ti3 C2 Tx Film Prepared through a Mild Oxidation Strategy

Highly capacitive MXene film by incorporating poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) hollow spheres prepared through an interfacial oxidation polymerization

Sheets stacking of Ti3C2Tx MXene dramatically reduces the ion-accessible sites and brings a sluggish reaction kinetics. While introducing transitional metal oxides or polymers in the MXene films could partially alleviate such issue, their enhanced performances are realized at the expense of electrode conductivity or cycling stability. Herein, we report an alternative spacer of conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) hollow spheres (HSs) which are fabricated by a facile template-assisted interfacial polymerization. The Fe3+ ions electrostatically adsorbed on the -SO3H groups of the sulfonated polystyrene spheres (S-PS) initiate the polymerization of uniform PEDOT shell, yielding uniform PEDOT HSs after dissolving the S-PS core. Introducing these PEDOT HSs in the MXene film generates the highly flexible MXene-PEDOT (MP) films featuring hierarchically porous network and high conductivity (283 S cm-1). Consequently, specific capacitance of 218 F g-1 at 3  mV s-1, along with a forty-folds decrease in relaxation time constant (1.0 vs 39.8 s) has been achieved. Moreover, the MP film also exhibits nearly thickness-independent capacitive performances with film thickness in the range of 10-46 μm. A maximal energy density of 21.2 μWh cm-2 at 1015 μW cm-2 together with 92 % capacitance retention over 5000 cycles are achieved for the MP-based solid-state supercapacitor. The intrinsic high conductivity, excellent mechanical flexibility and good structure integrity are responsible for such outstanding electrochemical behaviors.

Pushing Theoretical Potassium Storage Limits of MXenes through Introducing New Carbon Active Sites

Surface-driven capacitive storage enhances rate performance and cyclability, thereby improving the efficacy of high-power electrode materials and fast-charging batteries. Conventional defect engineering, widely-employed capacitive storage optimization strategy, primarily focuses on the influence of defects themselves on capacitive behaviors. However, the role of local environment surrounding defects, which significantly affects surface properties, remains largely unexplored for lack of suitable material platform and has long been neglected. As proof-of-concept, typical Ti3C2Tx MXenes are chosen as model materials owing to metallic conductivity and tunable surface properties, satisfying the requirements for capacitive-type electrodes. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the potential of MXenes with modulated local atomic environment is anticipated and introducing new carbon sites found near pores can activate electrochemically inert surface, attaining record theoretical potassium storage capacities of MXenes (291 mAh g-1). This supposition is realized through atomic tailoring via chemical scissor within sublayers, exposing new sp3-hybridized carbon active sites. The resulting MXenes demonstrate unprecedented rate performance and cycling stability. Notably, MXenes with higher carbon exposure exhibit a record-breaking capacity over 200 mAh g-1 and sustain a capacity retention higher than 80% after 20 months. These findings underscore the effectiveness of regulating defects' neighboring environment and illuminate future high-performance electrode design.

Harnessing Holey MXene/Graphene Oxide Heterostructure to Maximize Ion Channels in Lamellar Film for High-Performance Capacitive Deionization

2D Ti3C2Tx MXene-based film electrodes with metallic conductivity and high pseudo-capacitance are of considerable interest in cutting-edge research of capacitive deionization (CDI). Further advancement in practical use is however impeded by their intrinsic limitations, e.g., tortuous ion diffusion pathway of layered stacking, vulnerable chemical stability, and swelling-prone nature of hydrophilic MXene nanosheet in aqueous environment. Herein, a nanoporous 2D/2D heterostructure strategy is established to leverage both merits of holey MXene (HMX) and holey graphene oxide (HGO) nanosheets, which optimize ion transport shortcuts, alleviate common restacking issues, and improve film's mechanical and chemical stability. In this design, the nanosized in-plane holes in both handpicked building blocks build up ion diffusion shortcuts in the composite laminates to accelerate the transport and storage of ions. As a direct outcome, the HMX/rHGO films exhibit remarkable desalination capacity of 57.91 mg g-1 and long-term stability in 500 mg L-1 NaCl solution at 1.2 V. Moreover, molecular dynamics simulations and ex situ wide angle X-ray scattering jointly demonstrate that the conductive 2D/2D networks and ultra-short ion diffusion channels play critical roles in the ion intercalation/deintercalation process of HMX/rHGO films. The study paves an alternative design concept of freestanding CDI electrodes with superior ion transport efficiency.

Pre-Intercalation of TMA Cations in MoS2 Interlayers for Fast and Stable Zinc Ion Storage

Applications of aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) for grid-scale energy storage are hindered by the lacking of stable cathodes with large capacity and fast redox kinetics. Herein, the intercalation of tetramethylammonium (TMA+) cations is reported into MoS2 interlayers to expand its spacing from 0.63 to 1.06 nm. The pre-intercalation of TMA+ induces phase transition of MoS2 from 2H to 1T phase, contributing to an enhanced conductivity and better wettability. Besides, The calculation from density functional theory indicates that those TMA+ can effectively shield the interactions between Zn2+ and MoS2 layers. Consequently, two orders magnitude high Zn2+ ions diffusion coefficient and 11 times enhancement in specific capacity (212.4 vs 18.9 mAh g‒1 at 0.1 A g‒1) are achieved. The electrochemical investigations reveal both Zn2+ and H+ can be reversibly co-inserted into the MoS2-TMA electrode. Moreover, the steady habitat of TMA+ between MoS2 interlayers affords the MoS2-TMA with remarkable cycling stability (90.1% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 5.0 A g‒1). These performances are superior to most of the recent zinc ion batteries assembled with MoS2 or VS2-based cathodes. This work offers a new avenue to tuning the structure of MoS2 for aqueous ZIBs.

Recent Advances of Flexible MXene and its Composites for Supercapacitors

MXenes have unique properties such as high electrical conductivity, excellent mechanical properties, rich surface chemistry, and convenient processability. These characteristics make them ideal for producing flexible materials with tunable microstructures. This paper reviews the laboratory research progress of flexible MXene and its composite materials for supercapacitors. And introduces the general synthesis method of MXene, as well as the preparation and properties of flexible MXene. By analyzing the current research status, the electrochemical reaction mechanism of MXene was explained from the perspectives of electrolyte and surface terminating groups. This review particularly emphasizes the composite methods of freestanding flexible MXene composite materials. The review points out that the biggest problem with flexible MXene electrodes is severe self-stacking, which reduces the number of chemically active sites, weakens ion accessibility, and ultimately lowers electrochemical performance. Therefore, it is necessary to composite MXene with other electrode materials and design a good microstructure. This review affirms the enormous potential of flexible MXene and its composite materials in the field of supercapacitors. In addition, the challenges and possible improvements faced by MXene based materials in practical applications were also discussed.

Revolutionizing Airborne Virus Defense: Electromagnetic MXene-Coated Air Filtration for Superior Aerosol Viral Removal

The COVID-19 pandemic sparked public health concerns about the transmission of airborne viruses. Current methods mainly capture pathogens without inactivation, leading to potential secondary pollution. Herein, we evaluated the inactivation performance of a model viral species (MS2) in simulated bioaerosol by an electromagnetically enhanced air filtration system under a 300 kHz electromagnetic induction field. A nonwoven fabric filter was coated with a 2D catalyst, MXene (Ti3C2Tx), at a coating density of 4.56 mg·cm-2 to absorb electromagnetic irradiation and produce local heating and electromagnetic field for microbial inactivation. The results showed that the MXene-coated air filter significantly enhanced the viral removal efficiency by achieving a log removal of 3.4 ± 0.15 under an electromagnetic power density of 369 W·cm-2. By contrast, the pristine filter without catalyst coating only garnered a log removal of 0.3 ± 0.04. Though the primary antimicrobial mechanism is the local heating as indicated by the elevated surface temperature of 72.2 ± 4 °C under the electromagnetic field, additional nonthermal effects (e.g., dielectrophoresis) on enhanced viral capture during electromagnetically enhanced filtration were investigated by COMSOL simulation to delineate the potential transmission trajectories of bioaerosol. The results provide unique insights into the mechanisms of pathogen control and thus promote alternative solutions for preventing the transmission of airborne pathogens.

Interfacial Designs of MXenes for Mild Aqueous Zinc-Ion Storage

Limited Li resources, high cost, and safety risks of using organic electrolytes have stimulated a strong motivation to develop non-Li aqueous batteries. Aqueous Zn-ion storage (ZIS) devices offer low-cost and high-safety solutions. However, their practical applications are at the moment restricted by their short cycle life arising mainly from irreversible electrochemical side reactions and processes at the interfaces. This review sums up the capability of using 2D MXenes to increase the reversibility at the interface, assist the charge transfer process, and thereby improve the performance of ZIS. First, they discuss the ZIS mechanism and irreversibility of typical electrode materials in mild aqueous electrolytes. Then, applications of MXenes in different ZIS components are highlighted, including as electrodes for Zn2+ intercalation, protective layers of Zn anode, hosts for Zn deposition, substrates, and separators. Finally, perspectives are put forward on further optimizing MXenes to improve the ZIS performance.
