Solvent Engineering of Oxygen-Enriched Carbon Dots for Efficient Electrochemical Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots with Photoactivation Properties for Ultraviolet Ray Detection

Photoactivation is a phenomenon that could enhance the photoluminescence (PL) and photostability upon UV/vis light exposure, which is usually observed in CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs). However, the photoactivation phenomenon has been scarcely reported in fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs). Herein, the nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were prepared through a facile solvothermal approach with naphthalenetracarboxylic dianhydride and serine as precursors. Upon simple UV light irradiation for 10 min, the fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of N-CQDs could increase up to 10-fold. Based on this phenomenon, the N-CQDs were explored as an ultraviolet (UV) light sensor to assess the intensity of ultraviolet radiation in sunlight and indirectly evaluate the UV-blocking efficiency of various sunscreen products. Thus, this contribution not only provided an insight into developing a low-cost UV detector but also opened a door for the development of carbon quantum dots with converse-photobleaching properties.

Synergistic Effects of Amine Functional Groups and Enriched-Atomic-Iron Sites in Carbon Dots for Industrial-Current-Density CO2 Electroreduction

Metal phthalocyanine molecules with Me-N4 centers have shown promise in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (eCO2R) for CO generation. However, iron phthalocyanine (FePc) is an exception, exhibiting negligible eCO2R activity due to a higher CO2 to *COOH conversion barrier and stronger *CO binding energy. Here, amine functional groups onto atomic-Fe-rich carbon dots (Af-Fe-CDs) are introduced via a one-step solvothermal molecule fusion approach. Af-Fe-CDs feature well-defined Fe-N4 active sites and an impressive Fe loading (up to 8.5 wt%). The synergistic effect between Fe-N4 active centers and electron-donating amine functional groups in Af-Fe-CDs yielded outstanding CO2-to-CO conversion performance. At industrial-relevant current densities exceeding 400 mA cm-2 in a flow cell, Af-Fe-CDs achieved >92% selectivity, surpassing state-of-the-art CO2-to-CO electrocatalysts. The in situ electrochemical FTIR characterization combined with theoretical calculations elucidated that Fe-N4 integration with amine functional groups in Af-Fe-CDs significantly reduced energy barriers for *COOH intermediate formation and *CO desorption, enhancing eCO2R efficiency. The proposed synergistic effect offers a promising avenue for high-efficiency catalysts with elevated atomic-metal loadings.

Advanced Nanocarbons Toward two-Electron Oxygen Electrode Reactions for H2O2 Production and Integrated Energy Conversion

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) plays a pivotal role in advancing sustainable technologies due to its eco-friendly oxidizing capability. The electrochemical two-electron (2e-) oxygen reduction reaction and water oxidation reaction present an environmentally green method for H2O2 production. Over the past three years, significant progress is made in the field of carbon-based metal-free electrochemical catalysts (C-MFECs) for low-cost and efficient production of H2O2 (H2O2EP). This article offers a focused and comprehensive review of designing C-MFECs for H2O2EP, exploring the construction of dual-doping configurations, heteroatom-defect coupling sites, and strategic dopant positioning to enhance H2O2EP efficiency; innovative structural tuning that improves interfacial reactant concentration and promote the timely release of H2O2; modulation of electrolyte and electrode interfaces to support the 2e- pathways; and the application of C-MFECs in reactors and integrated energy systems. Finally, the current challenges and future directions in this burgeoning field are discussed.

Engineering Built-In Electric Field Microenvironment of CQDs/g-C3N4 Heterojunction for Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Graphitic carbon nitride (CN), as a nonmetallic photocatalyst, has gained considerable attention for its cost-effectiveness and environmentally friendly nature in catalyzing solar-driven CO2 conversion into valuable products. However, the photocatalytic efficiency of CO2 reduction with CN remains low, accompanied by challenges in achieving desirable product selectivity. To address these limitations, a two-step hydrothermal-calcination tandem synthesis strategy is presented, introducing carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into CN and forming ultra-thin CQD/CN nanosheets. The integration of CQDs induces a distinct work function with CN, creating a robust interface electric field after the combination. This electric field facilitates the accumulation of photoelectrons in the CQDs region, providing an abundant source of reduced electrons for the photocatalytic process. Remarkably, the CQD/CN nanosheets exhibit an average CO yield of 120 µmol g-1, showcasing an outstanding CO selectivity of 92.8%. The discovery in the work not only presents an innovative pathway for the development of high-performance photocatalysts grounded in non-metallic CN materials employing CQDs but also opens new avenues for versatile application prospects in environmental protection and sustainable cleaning energy.

The Still Elusive Role of Lightweight Doping in Carbon-Based Electrocatalysts for the Selective Oxygen Reduction Reaction to Hydrogen Peroxide

The two-electron electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a valuable alternative to the more conventional and energy-intensive anthraquinone process. From a circularity viewpoint, metal-free catalysts constitute a sustainable alternative for the process. In particular, lightweight hetero-doped C-materials are cost-effective and easily scalable samples that replace - more and more frequently - the use of critical raw elements in the preparation of highly performing (electro)catalysts. Anyhow, their large-scale exploitation in industrial processes still suffers from technical limits of samples upscale and reproducibility other than a still moderate comprehension of their action mechanism in the process. This concept article offers a comprehensive and exhaustive "journey" through the most representative lightweight hetero-doped C-based electrocatalysts and their performance in the 2e- ORR process. It provides an interpretation of phenomena at the triple-phase interface of solid catalyst, liquid electrolyte and gaseous oxygen based on the doping-driven generation of ideal electronic microenvironments at the catalyst surface.

Machine learning-guided realization of full-color high-quantum-yield carbon quantum dots

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have versatile applications in luminescence, whereas identifying optimal synthesis conditions has been challenging due to numerous synthesis parameters and multiple desired outcomes, creating an enormous search space. In this study, we present a novel multi-objective optimization strategy utilizing a machine learning (ML) algorithm to intelligently guide the hydrothermal synthesis of CQDs. Our closed-loop approach learns from limited and sparse data, greatly reducing the research cycle and surpassing traditional trial-and-error methods. Moreover, it also reveals the intricate links between synthesis parameters and target properties and unifies the objective function to optimize multiple desired properties like full-color photoluminescence (PL) wavelength and high PL quantum yields (PLQY). With only 63 experiments, we achieve the synthesis of full-color fluorescent CQDs with high PLQY exceeding 60% across all colors. Our study represents a significant advancement in ML-guided CQDs synthesis, setting the stage for developing new materials with multiple desired properties.

Amine-Functionalized Metal-Free Nanocarbon to Boost Selective CO2 Electroreduction to CO in a Flow Cell

Highly efficient electrochemical CO2-to-CO conversion is a promising approach for achieving carbon neutrality. While nonmetallic carbon electrocatalysts have shown potential for CO2-to-CO utilization in H-type cells, achieving efficient conversion in flow cells at an industrial scale remains challenging. In this study, we present a cost-effective synthesis strategy for preparing ultrathin 2D carbon nanosheet catalysts through simple amine functionalization. The optimized catalyst, NCNs-2.5, demonstrates exceptional CO selectivity with a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 98% and achieves a high current density of 55 mA cm-2 in a flow cell. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibits excellent long-term stability, operating continuously for 50 h while maintaining a CO selectivity above 90%. The superior catalytic activity of NCNs-2.5 is attributed to the presence of amine-N active sites within the carbon lattice structure. This work establishes a foundation for the rational design of cost-effective nonmetallic carbon catalysts as sustainable alternatives to metals in energy conversion systems.

Starch-derived carbon quantum dots: Unveiling structural insights and photocatalytic potential as a bio-sourced metal-free semiconductor

The optical appeal and sustainability of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have led to these nanoparticles swiftly gaining attention and emerging as a new, multifunctional class of nanomaterials. This work centers on the hydrothermal preparation of CQDs utilizing starch, an abundant and renewable biopolymer, as the precursor. Extensive characterization via spectroscopy and microscopy techniques revealed that the starch-derived CQDs exhibit a spherical nanoscale morphology averaging a ∼ 4 nm diameter, demonstrating a red-orange photoluminescence emission. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopic analysis verified their semiconductor behavior, with an estimated direct band gap of 4.1 eV comparable to conventional semiconductors. The prepared CQDs demonstrated considerable promise as metal-free, semiconductor photocatalysts for degrading aqueous dye pollutants under UV irradiation. High photodegradation efficiencies of 45.11 %, 62.94 %, and 91.21 % were achieved for Acid Blue 21, Reactive Blue 94, and Reactive TB 133 dyes, respectively. Systematic investigations of critical process parameters like pH, CQDs dosage, dye concentration, and contact time provided vital insights into the photocatalytic mechanism. The bio-sourced CQD nanomaterials offer a sustainable pathway for effective environmental remediation.

Isomerization Engineering of Oxygen-Enriched Carbon Quantum Dots for Efficient Electrochemical Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has emerged as a kind of multi-functional green oxidants with extensive industrial utility. Oxidized carbon materials exhibit promises as electrocatalysts in the two-electron (2e-) oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for H2O2 production. However, the precise identification and fabrication of active sites that selectively yield H2O2 present a serious challenge. Herein, a structural engineering strategy is employed to synthesize oxygen-doped carbon quantum dots (o-CQD) for the 2e- ORR. The surface electronic structure of the o-CQDs is systematically modulated by varying isomerization precursors, thereby demonstrating excellent electrocatalyst performance. Notably, o-CQD-3 emerges as the most promising candidate, showcasing a remarkable H2O2 selectivity of 96.2% (n = 2.07) at 0.68 V versus RHE, coupled with a low Tafel diagram of 66.95 mV dec-1. In the flow cell configuration, o-CQD-3 achieves a H2O2 productivity of 338.7 mmol gcatalyst -1 h-1, maintaining consistent production stability over an impressive 120-hour duration. Utilizing in situ technology and density functional theory calculations, it is unveil that edge sites of o-CQD-3 are facilely functionalized by C-O-C groups under alkaline ORR conditions. This isomerization engineering approach advances the forefront of sustainable catalysis and provides a profound insight into the carbon-based catalyst design for environmental-friendly chemical synthesis processes.

Prominent Structural Dependence of Quantum Capacitance Unraveled by Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Mesosponge

Porous carbons are important electrode materials for supercapacitors. One of the challenges associated with supercapacitors is improving their energy density without relying on pseudocapacitance, which is based on fast redox reactions that often shorten device lifetimes. A possible solution involves achieving high total capacitance (Ctot), which comprises Helmholtz capacitance (CH) and possibly quantum capacitance (CQ), in high-surface carbon materials comprising minimally stacked graphene walls. In this work, a templating method is used to synthesize 3D mesoporous graphenes with largely identical pore structures (≈2100 m2 g-1 with an average pore size of ≈7 nm) but different concentrations of oxygen-containing functional groups (0.3-6.7 wt.%) and nitrogen dopants (0.1-4.5 wt.%). Thus, the impact of the heteroatom functionalities on Ctot is systematically investigated in an organic electrolyte excluding the effect of pore structures. It is found that heteroatom functionalities determine Ctot, resulting in the cyclic voltammetry curves being rectangular or butterfly-shaped. The nitrogen functionalities are found to significantly enhance Ctot owing to increased CQ.

High Quantum Yield Amino Acid Carbon Quantum Dots with Unparalleled Refractive Index

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are one of the most promising types of fluorescent nanomaterials due to their exceptional water solubility, excellent optical properties, biocompatibility, chemical inertness, excellent refractive index, and photostability. Nitrogen-containing CQDs, which include amino acid based CQDs, are especially attractive due to their high quantum yield, thermal stability, and potential biomedical applications. Recent studies have attempted to improve the preparation of amino acid based CQDs. However, the highest quantum yield obtained for these dots was only 44%. Furthermore, the refractive indices of amino acid derived CQDs were not determined. Here, we systematically explored the performance of CQDs prepared from all 20 coded amino acids using modified hydrothermal techniques allowing more passivation layers on the surface of the dots to optimize their performance. Intriguingly, we obtained the highest refractive indices ever reported for any CQDs. The values differed among the amino acids, with the highest refractive indices found for positively charged amino acids including arginine-CQDs (∼2.1), histidine-CQDs (∼2.0), and lysine-CQDs (∼1.8). Furthermore, the arginine-CQDs reported here showed a nearly 2-fold increase in the quantum yield (∼86%) and a longer decay time (∼8.0 ns) compared to previous reports. In addition, we also demonstrated that all amino acid based CQD materials displayed excitation-dependent emission profiles (from UV to visible) and were photostable, water-soluble, noncytotoxic, and excellent for high contrast live cell imaging or bioimaging. These results indicate that amino acid based CQD materials are high-refractive-index materials applicable for optoelectronic devices, bioimaging, biosensing, and studying cellular organelles in vivo. This extraordinary RI may be highly useful for exploring cellular elements with different densities.

Aminated graphene quantum dots/CdS nanobelts for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of RhB dye under visible light

CdS nanoparticles have wide applications as photocatalysts for degradation of organic pollutants, but due to their limited turnover number and off-pathway charge recombination processes, their degradation efficiency is low. Herein, aminated graphene quantum dots/CdS (GQDs/CdS) nanobelts were successfully fabricated by solvothermal and hydrothermal processes. The prepared GQDs/CdS were characterized by physical methods to investigate their structure, morphology, optical properties, specific surface area, element composition, and chemical state. GQDs/CdS materials promoted efficient charge separation, and showed high efficiency in the photocatalytic degradation of the organic dye Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light. The degradation efficiency of RhB samples over 0.05 g of catalysts reached 97.40% after 150 min, a much higher efficiency in comparison to pure CdS. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy provided direct evidence for ˙OH and ˙O2- as the reactive oxidative species using DMPO as a spin trap. Consistent with the experimental results, a possible mechanism of RhB photocatalytic degradation by GQDs/CdS under visible light was proposed. This work may provide environmentally friendly photocatalysts for degrading organic dyes and purifying water.

Gram-Scale Mechanochemical Synthesis of Atom-Layer MoS2 Semiconductor Electrocatalyst via Functionalized Graphene Quantum Dots for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

The development of advanced and efficient synthetic methods is pivotal for the widespread application of 2D materials. In this study, a facile and scalable solvent-free mechanochemical approach is approached, employing graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as exfoliation agents, for the synthesis and functionalization of nearly atom-layered MoS2 nanosheets (ALMS). The resulting ALMS exhibits an ultrathin average thickness of 4 nm and demonstrates high solvent stability. The impressive yield of ALMS reached 63%, indicating its potential for scalable production of stable nanosheets. Remarkably, the ALMS catalyst exhibits excellent HER performance. Moreover, the ALMS catalyst showcases exceptional long-term durability, maintaining stable performance for nearly 200 h, underscoring its potential as a highly efficient and durable electrocatalyst. Significantly, the catalytic properties of ALMS are significantly influenced by ball milling production conditions. The GQD-assisted large-scale machinery synthesis pathway provides a promising avenue for the development of efficient and high-performance ultrathin 2D materials.

Carbonized Platycladus orientalis Derived Carbon Dots Accelerate Hemostasis through Activation of Platelets and Coagulation Pathways

Achieving rapid and effective hemostasis remains a multidisciplinary challenge. Here, distinctive functional carbon dots derived from carbonized Platycladus orientalis (CPO-CDs) are developed using one-step hydrothermal method. The negatively charged surface of CPO-CDs retains partial functional groups from CPO precursor, exhibiting excellent water solubility and high biocompatibility. Both rat liver injury model and tail amputation model have confirmed the rapid and effective hemostatic performance of CPO-CDs on exogenous hemorrhage. Further, on endogenous blood-heat hemorrhage syndrome rat model, CPO-CDs could inhibit hemorrhage and alleviate inflammation response. Interestingly, the excellent hemostasis performance of CPO-CDs is ascribed to activate exogenous coagulation pathway and common coagulation pathway. More importantly, metabolomics of rat plasma suggests that the hemostasis effect of CPO-CDs is closely related to platelet functions. Therefore, the designed in vitro experiments are performed and it is discovered that CPO-CDs significantly promote platelets adhesion, activation, and aggregation. Further, the underlying mechanism investigation suggests that Src/Syk signal pathway plays a key role in platelets activation triggered by CPO-CDs. Overall, CPO-CDs with rapid and excellent hemostatic performance are discovered for the first time, which could be an excellent candidate for the treatment of hemorrhagic diseases.

Bright solid-state luminescence and high-temperature resistance of Ga-doped carbon dots with ultra-wideband white emission for light-emitting diodes

Fluorescent CDs tend to undergo solid-state aggregation quenching in powder form. This is caused by the stacking of π-π conjugate structures and excessive resonant energy transfer. Moreover, various forms of N play an important role in white CDs suitable for LED applications. White, single-component, non-N-doped CDs have never been reported for LED application. In this study, to overcome this limitation, we developed Ga-doped CD powders containing no N element that exhibit ultra-wideband white emission in the range of 420-800 nm for LED applications and were able to resist solid-state aggregation quenching. Furthermore, the Ga-doped CD powders demonstrated excellent luminescence stability under high temperatures. Another strength of the Ga-doped CD powders is their large Stokes shift, where the peak center of white emission shifts from 550 nm to 650 nm under 365 nm excitation as the Ga doping concentration is adjusted from 0.05 to 0.6 (Ga : H2O, mass ratio). The full width at half-maximum can reach 262 nm. Additionally, the Ga-doped CD powders exhibit good luminescence stability under long-time exposure to an air atmosphere. Their luminescent intensity retained 70%-74% of the initial values even after being left in natural placement for 100 days. Moreover, the Ga-doped CDs demonstrate afterglow features.

Compositionally engineered Cd-Mo-Se alloyed QDs toward photocatalytic H2O2 production and Cr(VI) reduction with a detailed mechanism and influencing parameters

With the exceptional advantages of safety, greenness, and low cost, photocatalytic H2O2 generation has kindled a wonderful spark, although being severely hampered by the terrible photoinduced exciton recombination, migration, and surface decomposition. Here, employing reflux method, the Cd-Mo-Se quantum dots of varying molar ratios of Cd and Mo were synthesized using thioglycolic acid as the capping ligand to regulate their growth. This type of metal alloying promotes rapid charge migration, improves light harvesting, and reduces the rate of charge recombination. The improved optoelectronic properties and boosted activity of Cd-rich ternary CMSe-1 QDs led to the observed exceptional photocatalytic H2O2 yield of 1403.5 μmol g-1 h-1 (solar to chemical conversion efficiency, 0.27%) under visible light, outperforming the other ternary and Se-based QD photocatalysts. Additionally, CMSe-1 shows 93.6% (2 h) hazardous Cr(VI) photoreduction. The enhanced catalytic performance of CMSe-1 corresponds to effective charge carrier separation and transfer efficiency, well supported by PL, TRPL, and electrochemical measurements. Photocatalytic H2O2 production was also studied under varying experimental conditions and the scavenger test suggests a superoxide radical intermediate 2-step single electron reduction pathway. The catalyst-assisted Cr(VI) reduction is substantiated by the zero-order kinetics as well as the determination of the pHPZC value. The catalyst can be employed for a maximum of four times while retaining its activity, according to the photostability and reusability test outcomes. This research presents interesting approaches for producing ternary QDs and modified systems for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production and Cr(VI) reduction.

Interfacial engineering of a vertically stacked graphene/h-BN heterostructure as an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen peroxide synthesis

Recently, it was reported that an in-plane graphene (G)/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) (G/h-BN) heterostructure provided the catalytic activity for H2O2 synthesis by the 2 e- oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, there are few reports on the vertically stacked G/h-BN heterostructure, which refers to the stacking of graphene domains on the surface of h-BN. Herein, a simulated chemical vapor deposition method is proposed for fabricating a heterostructure of abundant vertically stacked G/h-BN by in situ growing graphene quantum dots (GQDs) on porous h-BN sheets. The performance of our vertically stacked heterostructure catalyst is superior to that of reported carbon-based electrocatalysts under an alkaline environment, with an H2O2 selectivity of 90-99% in a wide potential range (0.35 V-0.7 V vs. RHE), over 90% faradaic efficiency, and high mass activity of 1167 mmol gcatalyst-1 h-1. The experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) simulation verified that the vertically stacked heterostructure exhibits an excellent catalytic performance for the 2 e- ORR, and the edge B atoms in the B-centered AB stacking model are the most active catalytic sites. This research adequately demonstrates the promising catalytic activity of the vertically stacked G/h-BN heterostructure and provides a facile route for fabricating other vertically stacked heterostructures.

Amide Covalent Bonding Engineering in Heterojunction for Efficient Solar-Driven CO2 Reduction

Inefficient charge separation and slow interfacial reaction dynamics significantly hamper the efficiency of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Herein, a facile EDC/NHS-assisted linking strategy was developed to enhance charge separation in heterojunction photocatalysts. Using this approach, we successfully synthesized amide-bonded carbon quantum dot-g-C3N4 (CQD-CN) heterojunction photocatalysts. The formation of amide covalent bonds between CN and CQDs in the CN-CQD facilitates efficient carrier migration, CO2 adsorption, and activation. Exploiting these advantages, the CN-CQD photocatalysts exhibit high selectivity with CO and CH4 evolution rates of 79.2 and 2.7 μmol g-1 h-1, respectively. These rates are about 1.7 and 3.6 times higher than those of CN@CQD and bulk CN, respectively. Importantly, the CN-CQD photocatalysts demonstrate exceptional stability, even after 12 h of continuous testing. The presence of the COOH* signal is identified as a crucial intermediate species in the conversion of CO2 to CO. This study presents a covalent bonding engineering strategy for developing high-performance heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient solar-driven reduction of CO2.

Curvature Effect of Pyridinic N-Modified Carbon Atom Sites for Electrocatalyzing CO2 Conversion to CO

Carbon material is considered a promising electrocatalyst for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR); especially, N-doped carbon material shows high CO Faradic efficiency (FECO) when using pyridinic N species as the active site. However, in the past decade, more efforts were focused on the preparation of various carbon nanostructures containing abundant pyridinic N species and few researchers studied the electronic structure modulation of the pyridinic N site. The curvature of the carbon substrate is an easily controllable parameter for modulating the local electronic environment of catalytic sites. In this research, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with different diameters are applied to modulate the electronic environment of pyridinic N by the curvature effect. The pyridinic N sites doped on CNTs with the average curvature of 0.04 show almost 100% FECO at the current density of 3 mA cm-2 at -0.6 V vs RHE and 91% FECO retention after 12 h test, which is superior to most of the carbon-based electrocatalysts. As demonstrated by density functional theory simulation, the pyridinic N site forms a strong local electric field around the nearby C active site and protrudes out of the curved CNT surface like a tip, which remarkably enriches the protons around the adsorbed CO2 molecule.
