Substrate Engineering for CVD Growth of Single Crystal Graphene

Floating Bimetallic Catalysts for Growing 30 cm-Long Carbon Nanotube Arrays with High Yields and Uniformity

Ultralong carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered as promising candidates for many cutting-edge applications. However, restricted by the extremely low yields of ultralong CNTs, their practical applications can hardly be realized. Therefore, new methodologies shall be developed to boost the growth efficiency of ultralong CNTs and alleviate their areal density decay at the macroscale level. Herein, a facile, universal, and controllable method for the in situ synthesis of floating bimetallic catalysts (FBCs) is proposed to grow ultralong CNT arrays with high yields and uniformity. Ferrocene and metal acetylacetonates serve as catalyst precursors, affording the successful synthesis of a series of FBCs with controllable compositions. Among these FBCs, the optimized FeCu catalyst increases the areal density of ultralong CNT arrays to a record-breaking value of ≈8100 CNTs mm-1 and exhibits a lifetime 3.40 times longer than that of Fe, thus achieving both high yields and uniformity. A 30-centimeters-long and high-density ultralong CNT array is also successfully grown with the assistance of FeCu catalysts. As evidenced by this kinetic model and molecular dynamics simulations, the introduction of Cu into Fe can simultaneously improve the catalyst fluidity and decrease carbon solubility, and an optimal catalytic performance will be achieved by balancing this tradeoff.

Spiral-Driven Vertical Conductivity in Nanocrystalline Graphene

The structure of graphene grown in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is sensitive to the growth condition, particularly the substrate. The conventional growth of high-quality graphene via the Cu-catalyzed cracking of hydrocarbon species has been extensively studied; however, the direct growth on noncatalytic substrates, for practical applications of graphene such as current Si technologies, remains unexplored. In this study, nanocrystalline graphene (nc-G) spirals are produced on noncatalytic substrates by inductively coupled plasma CVD. The enhanced out-of-plane electrical conductivity is achieved by a spiral-driven continuous current pathway from bottom to top layer. Furthermore, some neighboring nc-G spirals exhibit a homogeneous electrical conductance, which is not common for stacked graphene structure. Klein-edge structure developed at the edge of nc-Gs, which can easily form covalent bonding, is thought to be responsible for the uniform conductance of nc-G aggregates. These results have important implications for practical applications of graphene with vertical conductivity realized through spiral structure.

A new and versatile template towards vertically oriented nanopillars and nanotubes

Vertically oriented nanostructures bring unparalleled high surface area, light trapping capability, and high device density to electronic, optoelectronic, and energy storage devices. However, general methods to prepare such structures remain sparse and are typically based on anodized metal oxide templates. Here, we demonstrate a new approach: using vertically oriented tetraaniline nanopillar arrays as templates for creating nanopillars and nanotubes of other materials. The tetraaniline templates are scalable and easy to prepare. Vertical arrays of a variety of materials can be created by directly coating them onto the tetraaniline nanopillars via vapor, solution, or electrodeposition. Since the tetraaniline template is encased within the target material, it does not require post-deposition removal, thus enabling vertical structure formation of sensitive materials. Conversely, removal of the encased tetraaniline template provides vertically oriented nanotube arrays in a lost-wax-type operation. The resulting vertical structures exhibit a high degree of orientation and height uniformity, with tunable feature size, spacing, and array density. Furthermore, the deposition location and shape of the vertical arrays can be patterned at a resolution of 3 μm. Collectively, these attributes should broaden the material repertoire for vertically oriented structures, and lead to advancements in energy storage, electronics, and optoelectronics.

Morphology-Control Growth of Graphene Islands by Nonlinear Carbon Supply

Controlling the morphology of graphene and other 2D materials in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth is crucial because the morphology reflects the crystal quality of as-synthesized nanomaterials in a certain way, and consequently it indirectly represents the physical properties of 2D materials such as bandgap, selective ion transportation, and impermeability. However, precise control of the morphology is limited by the complex formation mechanism and sensitive growth-environment factors of graphene. Therefore, the CVD synthesis of single-crystal hexagonal-shaped graphene islands with specific sizes is challenging. Herein, an unconventional nonlinear-carbon-supply growth strategy is proposed to realize controllable CVD growth of desired hexagonal graphene islands with specific sizes on Cu substrates. Large-area graphene films of isolated islands with desired densities, sizes, and distances between the islands are successfully synthesized. Subsequently, the direct growth of a planar-tunnel-junction structure based on two parallel gapped graphene islands is achieved by specific adjustment of the growth and etching processes of graphene CVD synthesis. It is therefore demonstrated that the nonlinear-carbon-supply growth strategy is a reliable method for the synthesis of high-quality graphene and can facilitate the direct growth of graphene-based nanodevices in the future.

Abnormal linear dichroism transition in two-dimensional PdPS

The linear dichroism (LD) conversion shows promising applications for polarized detectors, optical transition and light propagation. However, polarity reversal always occurs at a certain wavelength in LD materials, which can only distinguish two wavelength bands as wavelength-selective photodetectors. In this study, the multi-degree-of-freedom of optical anisotropy based on 2D PdPS flakes is carefully described, in which four critical switching wavelengths are observed. Remarkably, the quadruple LD conversion shows a significant wavelength-dependent behavior, allowing us to pinpoint five wavelength bands, 200-239 nm, 239-259 nm, 259-469 nm, 469-546 nm, and 546-700 nm, for a wavelength-selective approach to photodetectors. In addition, the polarized photoresponse under 532 nm was realized with an anisotropy factor of ∼1.51 and further illustrated the in-plane anisotropy. Raman spectroscopy of PdPS flakes also shows strong phonon anisotropy. The unique wavelength-selective property shows great potential for the miniaturization and integration of photodetectors.

Elemental Two-Dimensional Materials for Li/Na-Ion Battery Anode Applications

Two-dimensional (2D) nanostructure is currently the subject in the fields of new energy storage and devices. During the past years, a broad range of 2D materials represented by graphene have been developed and endow with excellent electrochemical properties. Among them, elemental 2D materials (Xenes) are an emerged material family for Li/Na-ion battery (LIB/SIB) anodes. Compared with other 2D materials and bulk materials, Xenes may exhibit some great superiorities for Li/Na storage, including excellent conductivity, fast ion diffusion and large active sites exposure. In this review, we provide a systematic summary of the recent progress and achievements of Xenes as well as their applications in LIBs/SIBs. The broad categorization of Xenes from group IIIA to VIA has been concisely outlined, and the related details in syntheses, structures and Li/Na-ion storage properties are reviewed. Further, the latest research progress of Xenes in Li/Na ion batteries are summarized, together with mechanism discussions. Finally, the challenges and prospects of Xenes applied to Li/Na ion battery are proposed based on its current developments.

Towards Repeatable, Scalable Graphene Integrated Micro-Nano Electromechanical Systems (MEMS/NEMS)

The demand for graphene-based devices is rapidly growing but there are significant challenges for developing scalable and repeatable processes for the manufacturing of graphene devices. Basic research on understanding and controlling growth mechanisms have recently enabled various mass production approaches over the past decade. However, the integration of graphene with Micro-Nano Electromechanical Systems (MEMS/NEMS) has been especially challenging due to performance sensitivities of these systems to the production process. Therefore, ability to produce graphene-based devices on a large scale with high repeatability is still a major barrier to the commercialization of graphene. In this review article, we discuss the merits of integrating graphene into Micro-Nano Electromechanical Systems, current approaches for the mass production of graphene integrated devices, and propose solutions to overcome current manufacturing limits for the scalable and repeatable production of integrated graphene-based devices.

Continuous orientated growth of scaled single-crystal 2D monolayer films

Single-crystal 2D materials have attracted a boom of scientific and technological activities. Recently, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) shows great promise for the synthesis of high-quality 2D materials owing to high controllability, high scalability and ultra-low cost. Two types of strategies have been developed: one is single-seed method, which focuses on the ultimate control of the density of nucleation into only one nucleus and the other is a multi-seed approach, which concentrates on the precise engineering of orientation of nuclei into a uniform alignment. Currently, the latter is recognized as a more effective method to meet the demand of industrial production, whereas the oriented domains can seamlessly merge into a continuous single-crystal film in a short time. In this review, we present the detailed cases of growing the representative monocrystalline 2D materials via the single-seed CVD method as well as show its advantages and disadvantages in shaping 2D materials. Then, other typical 2D materials (including graphene, h-BN, and TMDs) are given in terms of the unique feature under the guideline of the multi-seed growth approach. Furthermore, the growth mechanism for the 2D single crystals is presented and the following application in electronics, optics and antioxidation coatings are also discussed. Finally, we outline the current challenges, and a bright development in the future of the continuous orientated growth of scaled 2D crystals should be envisioned.

When graphene meets white graphene - recent advances in the construction of graphene and h-BN heterostructures

2D heterostructures have very recently witnessed a boom in scientific and technological activities owing to the customized spatial orientation and tailored physical properties. A large amount of 2D heterostructures have been constructed on the basis of the combination of mechanical exfoliation and located transfer method, opening wide possibilities for designing novel hybrid systems with tuned structures, properties, and applications. Among the as-developed 2D heterostructures, in-plane graphene and h-BN heterostructures have drawn the most attention in the past few decades. The controllable synthesis, the investigation of properties, and the expansion of applications have been widely explored. Herein, the fabrication of graphene and h-BN heterostructures is mainly focused on. Then, the spatial configurations for the heterostructures are systematically probed to identify the highly related unique features. Moreover, as a most promising approach for the scaled production of 2D materials, the in situ CVD fabrication of the heterostructures is summarized, demonstrating a significant potential in the controllability of size, morphology, and quality. Further, the recent applications of the 2D heterostructures are discussed. Finally, the concerns and challenges are fully elucidated and a bright future has been envisioned.
