Modulating the 0D/2D Interface of Hybrid Semiconductors for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Performances

CuInS2/Red Phosphorus Nanosheet Interleaved Heterostructures with Improved Interfacial Charge Transfer for Photoelectrochemical Aptasensing

Accelerating the migration of interfacial carriers in heterojunctions is crucial for achieving highly sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing. In this study, we developed three-dimensional (3D)/two-dimensional (2D) CuInS2/red phosphorus nanosheet (CuInS2/RP NS) n-n heterojunction functional materials with enhanced interfacial charge transfer capabilities for PEC sensing. The 3D CuInS2 serves as a conductive layer, providing excellent electronic conductivity and superior electron absorption and transport properties. In contrast, the ultrathin RP NS acts as a transport layer that enhances carrier mobility. The 3D/2D heterojunction ensures a large interface contact surface, shortening the carrier transport distance. A well-aligned band position generates a substantial built-in electric field, providing a significant driving force for efficient carrier separation and migration, thereby improving response sensitivity. A PEC aptamer sensor was constructed based on the synthesized heterostructure for ciprofloxacin detection. The detection limit of the CuInS2/RP NS aptamer sensor for ciprofloxacin is 2.03 × 10-15 mg·mL-1, with a linear range from 1.0 × 10-14 to 1.0 × 10-5 mg·mL-1. This work presents a strategy for enhancing the photoelectric response by modulating the interface structure of heterojunctions, thereby opening new prospects for the application of highly sensitive PEC sensors in antibiotic detection.

A Review of in vivo Toxicity of Quantum Dots in Animal Models

Tremendous research efforts have been devoted to nanoparticles for applications in optoelectronics and biomedicine. Over the past decade, quantum dots (QDs) have become one of the fastest growing areas of research in nanotechnology because of outstanding photophysical properties, including narrow and symmetrical emission spectrum, broad fluorescence excitation spectrum, the tenability of the emission wavelength with the particle size and composition, anti-photobleaching ability and stable fluorescence. These characteristics are suitable for optical imaging, drug delivery and other biomedical applications. Research on QDs toxicology has demonstrated QDs affect or damage the biological system to some extent, and this situation is generally caused by the metal ions and some special properties in QDs, which hinders the further application of QDs in the biomedical field. The toxicological mechanism mainly stems from the release of heavy metal ions and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). At the same time, the contact reaction with QDs also cause disorders in organelles and changes in gene expression profiles. In this review, we try to present an overview of the toxicity and related toxicity mechanisms of QDs in different target organs. It is believed that the evaluation of toxicity and the synthesis of environmentally friendly QDs are the primary issues to be addressed for future widespread applications. However, considering the many different types and potential modifications, this review on the potential toxicity of QDs is still not clearly elucidated, and further research is needed on this meaningful topic.

An A2 B2 O7 -Type High-Entropy Oxide for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Photodetector with Excellent Long-Term Stability

Optoelectronics with excellent long-term stability is meaningful for practical applications. Herein, for the first time, an A2 B2 O7 type high-entropy oxide of (La0.2 Ce0.2 Nd0.2 Gd0.2 Bi0.2 )2 Ti2 O7 (ATO) is synthesized and applied for photoelectrochemical photodetection. The lattice distortion, highly dispersed metal composition, and exposed active sites of ATO are beneficial for the fast separation and transmission of photogenerated electron/hole pairs, endowing ATO-based devices with good photodetection performance. Both the density functional theory calculations and the nondegenerate transient absorption spectroscopy demonstrate the good optoelectronic properties of ATO. The systematic experimental studies reveal the tunable photodetection capability of ATO-based photodetector (PD) in the visible region. A photocurrent of 772.00 nA cm-2 and a responsivity of 4.02 µA W-1 can be achieved as the PD in 1.0 m KOH with the bias potential of 0.6 V. Importantly, the robust and reproducible ON/OFF signals of the PD can be verified and there is only ≈5.00% attenuation in photocurrent even after 6 months, revealing the great potential of high- entropy oxides for practical applications.

Photoelectrochemical Immunosensor Based on a 1D Fe2O3/3D Cd-ZnIn2.2Sy Heterostructure as a Sensing Platform for Ultrasensitive Detection of Neuron-Specific Enolase

Lung cancer is a high-mortality cancer related to the concentration of neuron-specific enolase (NSE). In this work, a sandwich-type photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor was constructed for ultrasensitive detection of NSE, which is based on iron trioxide/indium zinc cadmium sulfide (Fe₂O₃/Cd-ZnIn_2.2S_y) as a sensing platform and Ag-modified polyaniline (Ag@PANI) as a signal amplification label. The 1D Fe₂O₃ porous nanorods with a large specific surface area were synthesized by calcination of Fe-MIL-88A and etching of NaOH. To improve the photocurrent response, the 3D architecture Cd-ZnIn_2.2S_y was combined with the 1D Fe₂O₃ porous nanorods to form a 1D Fe₂O₃/3D Cd-ZnIn_2.2S_y heterostructure. Specifically, the Fe₂O₃/Cd-ZnIn_2.2S_y heterostructure with a good energy level matching (the two can form a stepped energy level matching, which accelerates the transfer rate of electrons) can improve the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs (e^-/h⁺) under visible light irradiation, which enhances the photocurrent response. Ag@PANI has a strong electron transport capability and can be used as a secondary antibody marker for the signal amplification of the immunosensor. The sensor exhibits a good linear detection range of 100 fg/mL to 100 ng/mL with a low detection limit of 33.5 fg/mL. Moreover, the constructed sandwich-type PEC immunosensor shows good performance and possesses excellent specificity, selectivity, and stability over a period of 4 weeks for NSE detection. With these excellent properties, the immunosensor can be extended to analyze and diagnose other disease biomarkers.

PtS quantum dots/Nb2O5 nanosheets with accelerated charge transfer for boosting photocatalytic H2 production

The rapid recombination rate of charges limits the improvement of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance related to semiconductor photocatalysts. An effective strategy to accelerate charge separation and transfer is the design and construction of new high-efficiency cocatalysts on photocatalysts. Herein, a system of PtS quantum dots/Nb₂O₅ nanosheets (PtS/Nb₂O₅) was constructed via the in situ vapor phase (ISVP) synthesis process. The conclusions from ultrafast femtosecond-resolved TA spectroscopy indicated that the lifetime of the photogenerated charges of PtS/Nb₂O₅ (6073.75 ps) was shortened markedly in contrast to that of Nb₂O₅ (6634.05 ps), manifesting the facilitated separation and transfer of photogenerated charges caused by the quantum-dot-structured PtS cocatalyst. The enhanced charge separation and transfer capacity contributes to an excellent H₂ production rate of 182.5 μmol h^-1 for PtS/Nb₂O₅, which is up to 3.4 and 12.2 times that of Pt/Nb₂O₅ and Nb₂O₅, respectively. This work brings up new avenues for constructing unique and effective photocatalysts via the cocatalyst design.

A high-responsivity CsPbBr3 nanowire photodetector induced by CdS@CdxZn1-xS gradient-alloyed quantum dots

Benefitting from excellent thermal and moisture stability, inorganic halide perovskite materials have established themselves quickly as promising candidates for fabricating photoelectric devices. However, due to their high trap state density and rapid carrier recombination rate, the photoelectric conversion efficiencies of current inorganic halide perovskite materials are still lower than expected. Here, after systematic research on the optoelectronic properties of CsPbBr₃ nanowires (NWs) decorated with binary CdS quantum dots (QDs), CdS@ZnS core/shell QDs, and gradient-alloyed CdS@Cd_xZn_1-xS QDs, respectively, we proposed a facile method to improve the quantum efficiency of perovskite-based photodetectors with low cost, in which the aforementioned QDs are firstly integrated with CsPbBr₃ NWs, which act as a photosensitive layer. Notably, the responsivity of the CsPbBr₃ NW photodetector decorated with CdS@Cd_xZn_1-xS QDs was enhanced about 10-fold compared to that of pristine CsPbBr₃ NW devices. This value is far superior to those for hybrids composed of binary CdS QDs and CdS@ZnS core/shell QDs. The high responsivity enhancement phenomena are interpreted based on the unique funnel-shaped energy level of CdS@Cd_xZn_1-xS QDs, which is favorable for light-harvesting and photocarrier separation. This work indicates that our unique QD/NW hybrid nanostructure is a desirable building block for fabricating high-performance photodetectors.

Ultrasensitive Photochemical Immunosensor Based on Flowerlike SnO2/BiOI/Ag2S Composites for Detection of Procalcitonin

Based on the necessity and urgency of detecting infectious disease marker procalcitonin (PCT), a novel unlabeled photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor was prepared for the rapid and sensitive detection of PCT. Firstly, SnO2 porous nanoflowers with good photocatalytic performance were prepared by combining hydrothermal synthesis and calcining. BiOI nanoflowers were synthesized by facile ultrasonic mixed reaction. Ag2S quantum dots were deposited on SnO2/BiOI composites by in situ growth method. The SnO2/BiOI/Ag2S composites with excellent photoelectric properties were employed as substrate material, which could provide significantly enhanced and stable signal because of the energy level matching of SnO2, BiOI and Ag2S and the good light absorption performance. Accordingly, a PEC immunosensor based on SnO2/BiOI/Ag2S was constructed by using the layered modification method to achieve high sensitivity analysis of PCT. The linear dynamic range of the detection method was 0.50 pg·mL-1~100 ng·mL-1, and the detection limit was 0.14 pg·mL-1. In addition, the designed PEC immunosensor exhibited satisfactory sensitivity, selectivity, stability and repeatability, which opened up a new avenue for the analyzation of PCT and further provided guidance for antibiotic therapy.
