Probing the Structural Details of Chitin Nanocrystal-Water Interfaces by Three-Dimensional Atomic Force Microscopy

High-Speed Three-Dimensional Scanning Force Microscopy Visualization of Subnanoscale Hydration Structures on Dissolving Calcite Step Edges

Hydration at solid-liquid interfaces plays an essential role in a wide range of phenomena in biology and in materials and Earth sciences. However, the atomic-scale dynamics of hydration have remained elusive because of difficulties associated with their direct visualization. In this work, a high-speed three-dimensional (3D) scanning force microscopy technique that produces 3D images of solid-liquid interfaces with subnanoscale resolution at a rate of 1.6 s per 3D image was developed. Using this technique, direct 3D images of moving step edges were acquired during calcite dissolution in water, and hydration structures on transition regions were visualized. A Ca(OH)2 monolayer was found to form along the step edge as an intermediate state during dissolution. This imaging process also showed that hydration layers extended from the upper terraces to the transition regions to stabilize adsorbed Ca(OH)2. This technique provides information that cannot be obtained via conventional 1D/2D measurement methods.

Revealing the Mechanism Underlying 3D-AFM Imaging of Suspended Structures by Experiments and Simulations

The invention of 3D atomic force microscopy (3D-AFM) has enabled visualizing subnanoscale 3D hydration structures. Meanwhile, its applications to imaging flexible molecular chains have started to be experimentally explored. However, the validity and principle of such imaging have yet to be clarified by comparing experiments and simulations or cross-observations with an alternative technique. Such studies are impeded by the lack of an appropriate model. Here, this difficulty is overcome by fabricating 3D carbon nanotube (CNT) structures flexible enough for 3D-AFM, large enough for scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and simple enough for simulations. SEM and 3D-AFM observations of the same model provide unambiguous evidence to support the possibility of imaging overlapped nanostructures, such as suspended CNT and underlying platinum (Pt) nanodots. Langevin dynamics simulations of such 3D-AFM imaging clarify the imaging mechanism, where the flexible CNT is laterally displaced to allow the AFM probe access to the underlying structures. These results consistently show that 3D-AFM images are affected by the friction between the CNT and AFM nanoprobe, yet it can be significantly suppressed by oscillating the cantilever. This study reinforces the theoretical basis of 3D-AFM for imaging various 3D self-organizing systems in diverse fields, from life sciences to interface sciences.

Chitin Nanofibers Enable the Colloidal Dispersion of Carbon Nanomaterials in Aqueous Phase and Hybrid Material Coassembly

Chitin nanofibrils (ChNF) sourced from discarded marine biomass are shown as effective stabilizers of carbon nanomaterials in aqueous media. Such stabilization is evaluated for carbon nanotubes (CNT) considering spatial and temporal perspectives by using experimental (small-angle X-ray scattering, among others) and theoretical (atomistic simulation) approaches. We reveal that the coassembly of ChNF and CNT is governed by hydrophobic interactions, while electrostatic repulsion drives the colloidal stabilization of the hybrid ChNF/CNT system. Related effects are found to be transferable to multiwalled carbon nanotubes and graphene nanosheets. The observations explain the functionality of hybrid membranes obtained by aqueous phase processing, which benefit from an excellent areal mass distribution (correlated to piezoresistivity), also contributing to high electromechanical performance. The water resistance and flexibility of the ChNF/CNT membranes (along with its tensile strength at break of 190 MPa, conductivity of up to 426 S/cm, and piezoresistivity and light absorption properties) are conveniently combined in a device demonstration, a sunlight water evaporator. The latter is shown to present a high evaporation rate (as high as 1.425 kg water m-2 h-1 under one sun illumination) and recyclability.

Dynamics of Molecular Self-Assembly of Short Peptides at Liquid-Solid Interfaces - Effect of Charged Amino Acid Point Mutations

Self-organizing solid-binding peptides on atomically flat solid surfaces offer a unique bio/nano hybrid platform, useful for understanding the basic nature of biology/solid coupling and their practical applications. The surface behavior of peptides is determined by their molecular folding, which is influenced by various factors and is challenging to study. Here, the effect of charged amino acids is studied on the self-assembly behavior of a directed evolution selected graphite-binding dodecapeptide on graphite surface. Two mutations, M6 and M8, are designed to introduce negatively and positively charged moieties, respectively, at the anchoring domain of the wild-type (WT) peptide, affecting both binding and assembly. The questions addressed here are whether mutant peptides exhibit molecular crystal formation and demonstrate molecular recognition on the solid surface based on the specific mutations. Frequency-modulated atomic force microscopy is used for observations of the surface processes dynamically in water at molecular resolution over several hours at the ambient. The results indicate that while the mutants display distinct folding and surface behavior, each homogeneously nucleates and forms 2D self-organized patterns, akin to the WT peptide. However, their growth dynamics, domain formation, and crystalline lattice structures differ significantly. The results represent a significant step toward the rational design of bio/solid interfaces, potent facilitators of a variety of future implementations.

Catalytically Active Carbon for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Energy Conversion: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

The shortage and unevenness of fossil energy sources are affecting the development and progress of human civilization. The technology of efficiently converting material resources into energy for utilization and storage is attracting the attention of researchers. Environmentally friendly biomass materials are a treasure to drive the development of new-generation energy sources. Electrochemical theory is used to efficiently convert the chemical energy of chemical substances into electrical energy. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the development of green and economical electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Although many reviews have been reported around the application of biomass-derived catalytically active carbon (CAC) catalysts in ORR, these reviews have only selected a single/partial topic (including synthesis and preparation of catalysts from different sources, structural optimization, or performance enhancement methods based on CAC catalysts, and application of biomass-derived CACs) for discussion. There is no review that systematically addresses the latest progress in the synthesis, performance enhancement, and applications related to biomass-derived CAC-based oxygen reduction electrocatalysts synchronously. This review fills the gap by providing a timely and comprehensive review and summary from the following sections: the exposition of the basic catalytic principles of ORR, the summary of the chemical composition and structural properties of various types of biomass, the analysis of traditional and the latest popular biomass-derived CAC synthesis methods and optimization strategies, and the summary of the practical applications of biomass-derived CAC-based oxidative reduction electrocatalysts. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the latest advances to provide research directions and design ideas for the development of catalyst synthesis/optimization and contributes to the industrialization of biomass-derived CAC electrocatalysis and electric energy storage.

Interfacial water on collagen nanoribbons by 3D AFM

Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in mammals. Type I collagen in its fibril form has a characteristic pattern structure that alternates two regions called gap and overlap. The structure and properties of collagens are highly dependent on the water and mineral content of the environment. Here, we apply 3D AFM to characterize at angstrom-scale resolution the interfacial water structure of collagen nanoribbons. For a neutral tip, the interfacial water structure is characterized by the oscillation of the water particle density distribution with a value of 0.3 nm (hydration layers). The interfacial structure does not depend on the collagen region. For a negatively charged tip, the interfacial structure might depend on the collagen region. Hydration layers are observed in overlap regions, while in gap regions, the interfacial solvent structure is dominated by electrostatic interactions. These interactions generate interlayer distances of 0.2 nm.

Chitin Nanofibrils from Fungi for Hierarchical Gel Polymer Electrolytes for Transient Zinc-Ion Batteries with Stable Zn Electrodeposition

Rechargeable batteries play an integral role toward carbon neutrality. Environmentally sustainable batteries should consider the trade-offs between material renewability, processability, thermo-mechanical and electrochemical performance, as well as transiency. To address this dilemma, we follow circular economy principles to fabricate fungal chitin nanofibril (ChNF) gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) for zinc-ion batteries. These biocolloids are physically entangled into hierarchical hydrogels with specific surface areas of 49.5 m2 ·g-1 . Ionic conductivities of 54.1 mS·cm-1 and a Zn2+ transference number of 0.468 are reached, outperforming conventional non-renewable/non-biodegradable glass microfibre separator-liquid electrolyte pairs. Enabled by its mechanically elastic properties and large water uptake, a stable Zn electrodeposition in symmetric Zn|Zn configuration with a lifespan above 600 h at 9.5 mA·cm-2 is obtained. At 100 mA·g-1 , the discharge capacity of Zn/α-MnO2 full cells increases above 500 cycles when replacing glass microfiber separators with ChNF GPEs, while the rate performance remains comparable to glass microfiber separators. To make the battery completely transient, the metallic current collectors are replaced by biodegradable polyester/carbon black composites undergoing degradation in water at 70 °C. This work demonstrates the applicability of bio-based materials to fabricate green and electrochemically competitive batteries with potential applications in sustainable portable electronics, or biomedicine.

Molecular Scale Structure and Kinetics of Layer-by-Layer Peptide Self-Organization at Atomically Flat Solid Surfaces

Understanding the mechanisms of self-organization of short peptides into two- and three-dimensional architectures are of great interest in the formation of crystalline biomolecular systems and their practical applications. Since the assembly is a dynamic process, the study of structural development is challenging at the submolecular dimensions continuously across an adequate time scale in the natural biological environment, in addition to the complexities stemming from the labile molecular structures of short peptides. Self-organization of solid binding peptides on surfaces offers prospects to overcome these challenges. Here we use a graphite binding dodecapeptide, GrBP5, and record its self-organization process of the first two layers on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface in an aqueous solution by using frequency modulation atomic force microscopy in situ. The observations suggest that the first layer forms homogeneously, generating self-organized crystals with a lattice structure in contact with the underlying graphite. The second layer formation is mostly heterogeneous, triggered by the crystalline defects on the first layer, growing row-by-row establishing nominally diverse biomolecular self-organized structures with transient crystalline phases. The assembly is highly dependent on the peptide concentration, with the nucleation being high in high molecular concentrations, e.g., >100 μM, while the domain size is small, with an increase in the growth rate that gradually slows down. Self-assembled peptide crystals are composed of either singlets or doublets establishing P1 and P2 oblique lattices, respectively, each commensurate with the underlying graphite lattice with chiral crystal relations. This work provides insights into the surface behavior of short peptides on solids and offers quantitative guidance toward elucidating molecular mechanisms of self-assembly helping in the scientific understanding and construction of coherent bio/nano hybrid interfaces.

Discrete Orientations of Interfacial Waters Direct Crystallization of Mica-Binding Proteins

Understanding the basis of templated molecular assembly on a solid surface requires a fundamental comprehension of both short- and long-range aqueous response to the surface under a variety of solution conditions. Herein we provide a detailed picture of how the molecular-scale response to different mica surfaces yields distinct solvent orientations that produce quasi-static directional potentials onto which macromolecules can adsorb. We connect this directionality to observed (a)symmetric epitaxial alignment of designed proteins onto these surfaces, corroborate our findings with 3D atomic force microscopy experiments, and identify slight differences in surface structure as the origin of this effect. Our work provides a detailed picture of the intrinsic electrolyte response in the vicinity of mineral interfaces, with clear predictions for experiment, and highlights the role of solvent on the predictive assembly of hierarchical materials on mineral surfaces.

Interfacial Liquid Water on Graphite, Graphene, and 2D Materials

The optical, electronic, and mechanical properties of graphite, few-layer, and two-dimensional (2D) materials have prompted a considerable number of applications. Biosensing, energy storage, and water desalination illustrate applications that require a molecular-scale understanding of the interfacial water structure on 2D materials. This review introduces the most recent experimental and theoretical advances on the structure of interfacial liquid water on graphite-like and 2D materials surfaces. On pristine conditions, atomic-scale resolution experiments revealed the existence of 1-3 hydration layers. Those layers were separated by ∼0.3 nm. The experimental data were supported by molecular dynamics simulations. However, under standard working conditions, atomic-scale resolution experiments revealed the presence of 2-3 hydrocarbon layers. Those layers were separated by ∼0.5 nm. Linear alkanes were the dominant molecular specie within the hydrocarbon layers. Paradoxically, the interface of an aged 2D material surface immersed in water does not have water molecules on its vicinity. Free-energy considerations favored the replacement of water by alkanes.

Molecular insights on the crystalline cellulose-water interfaces via three-dimensional atomic force microscopy

Cellulose, a renewable structural biopolymer, is ubiquitous in nature and is the basic reinforcement component of the natural hierarchical structures of living plants, bacteria, and tunicates. However, a detailed picture of the crystalline cellulose surface at the molecular level is still unavailable. Here, using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we revealed the molecular details of the cellulose chain arrangements on the surfaces of individual cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in water. Furthermore, we visualized the three-dimensional (3D) local arrangement of water molecules near the CNC surface using 3D AFM. AFM experiments and MD simulations showed anisotropic water structuring, as determined by the surface topologies and exposed chemical moieties. These findings provide important insights into our understanding of the interfacial interactions between CNCs and water at the molecular level. This may allow the establishment of the structure-property relationship of CNCs extracted from various biomass sources.
