Electrochemical Energy Storage Electrodes via Citrus Fruits Derived Carbon: A Minireview

Activated Carbon Electrodes for Supercapacitors from Purple Corncob (Zea maysL.)

Activated carbon-based supercapacitor electrodes synthesized from biomass or waste-derived biomass have recently attracted considerable attention because of their low cost, natural abundance, and power delivery performance. In this work, purple-corncob-based active carbons are prepared by KOH activation and subsequently evaluated as a composite electrode for supercapacitors using either an acidic or an alkali solution as the electrolyte. The synthesis of the material involves mixing the purple corncob powder with different concentrations of KOH (in the range of 5% to 30%) and a thermal treatment at 700 °C under an inert atmosphere. Physicochemical characterizations were performed using scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, N2 physisorption analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, while the electrochemical characteristics were determined using cyclic voltammetry, a galvanostatic charge/discharge curve, and electrochemical impedance techniques measured in a three- and two-electrode system. Composite electrodes activated with 10% KOH had a specific surface area of 728 m2 g-1, and high capacitances of 195 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 in 1 mol L-1 H2SO4 and 116 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 in 1 mol L-1 KOH were obtained. It also presented a 76% capacitance retention after 50 000 cycles. These properties depend significantly on the microporous area and micropore volume characteristics of the activated carbon. Overall, our results indicate that purple corncob has an interesting prospect as a carbon precursor material for supercapacitor electrodes.

Stimuli-Responsive Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices

Electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices have been swiftly developed in recent years. Stimuli-responsive EES devices that respond to different external stimuli are considered the most advanced EES devices. The stimuli-responsive EES devices enhanced the performance and applications of the EES devices. The capability of the EES devices to respond to the various external stimuli due to produced advanced EES devices that distinguished the best performance and interactions in different situations. The stimuli-responsive EES devices have responsive behavior to different external stimuli including chemical compounds, electricity, photons, mechanical tensions, and temperature. All of these advanced responsiveness behaviors have originated from the functionality and specific structure of the EES devices. The multi-responsive EES devices have been recognized as the next generation of stimuli-responsive EES devices. There are two main steps in developing stimuli-responsive EES devices in the future. The first step is the combination of the economical, environmental, electrochemical, and multi-responsiveness priorities in an EES device. The second step is obtaining some advanced properties such as biocompatibility, flexibility, stretchability, transparency, and wearability in novel stimuli-responsive EES devices. Future studies on stimuli-responsive EES devices will be allocated to merging these significant two steps to improve the performance of the stimuli-responsive EES devices to challenge complicated situations.

Recent progress in biomass-derived carbonaceous composites for enhanced microwave absorption

Carbonaceous microwave absorbing materials are in vital demand due to the extensive electromagnetic pollution in 5G network era and urgent requirements for stealth technology in national defense domain. Rather than the complicated vapor deposition method, a simple biomass-derived approach sheds light on the mass production of carbon materials for its ubiquitous, environmental-friendly, cost-off, and sustainable advantages. Herein, a concise review of recent advances in designing carbonaceous materials for EM attention is provided with particular stress on the biomass categories and the synthetic method. The three dimensional (3D) interconnected network of carbon materials are highlighted in analysis regarding the biomass selection, functional process, pore-forming strategy and the microwave absorption performance of the corresponding composites. Nature fiber-derived carbon materials, possessing high-aspect ratio fiber structure, are also discussed due to their potential in weaving manufacture and diverse application for flexible cloaking fabric. In the end, the current challenge and the directional perspective for utilizing biomass-derived carbon absorbing materials with effective EM properties are outlined.

Energy Harvesting/Storage and Environmental Remediation via Hot Drinks Wastes

Providing energy and materials are considered one most important issue in the world. Produce and storage energy and also, prepare chemical substances from disposable biomass materials have been widely developed in recent decades to decrease environmental pollutions and production costs. The waste of hot drinks including coffee wastes and tea wastes have considerable potentials to provide energy and different chemical substances. Also, hazardous materials (especially aqueous ions) can be absorbed via hot drinks wastes to protect the environment against perilous pollutants. The low-cost and benign hot drinks wastes including tea wastes and coffee grounds and also the pyrolyzed of them as the hot drinks waste biochar materials have been widely used to produce and store green energies and also, absorb hazardous materials. Production and storage energy and environmental remediation in these sustainable procedures not only reduce the cost of energy but also protect the environment.

Management of off-specification compost by using co-hydrothermal carbonization with olive tree pruning. Assessing energy potential of hydrochar

In this work the management of a waste called off-specification compost (OSC) was proposed via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). The composition of this residue makes it not suitable for agronomic purposes because of the Spanish regulation requirements. Therefore, a way of management and/or valorisation needs to be found. The energy recovery through co-HTC with olive tree pruning (OTP) was evaluated. Blending of OSC with lignocellulosic biomass allows to obtain a coal-like product with physicochemical properties similar to those of a lignite, characterised by its high carbon content. Blends of 25, 50 and 75% of OSC with OTP were analysed. The individual OSC does not present good parameters for being used as solid fuel based on its chemical composition, however, the blend of 75% of biomass with 25% of OSC does. With a higher heating value of 26.19 MJ/kg, this blend shows the best energy yield and energy densification ratio. Thermogravimetric and kinetic analysis reveal that as biomass content in the blend increases, the more the hydrochar behaves as a solid fuel, therefore OSC can be used for energy purposes while its current use of landfill disposal can be reduced.

Multifunctional superhydrophobic surfaces

Surface wetting has a significant influence on the performance and applications of the materials. The superhydrophobic surfaces have water repellency due to low surface energy chemistry and micro/nanostructure roughness. The amazing applications of superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) lead to increase attention to superhydrophobicity in recent decades. The SHSs have been fabricated through chemical and physical methods. The further properties of SHSs as functions such as self-healing, anti-bacterial, anti-fouling, and stimuli-responsiveness are considered as the functions of the SHSs. The Multifunctional SHSs (MSHSs) that contained superhydrophobicity and at least two other properties as the next generation of the SHSs are swiftly developed in recent years. The multiple applications of the MSHSs are originated from specific morphology and functional groups of the MSHSs. The functions (properties) of the MSHSs are categorized into three groups including self-cleaning properties, restrictive properties, and smart properties. Designing and keeping surface structure plays a significant role in fabricating durable MSHSs. However, there is a big challenge to design and also scale up mechanochemical durable MSHSs. Based on state-of-the-art investigations, establishing a self-healing function can improve the durability of SHSs. The durable self-healing MSHSs can enhance the performance of the other functions and lifespan of the surface. In this review, all surface structures and superhydrophobic agents in MSHSs are investigated. The perspective of the MSHSs determined the next generation of the MSHSs have several significant parameters including durability, stability, more functions, more responsiveness, and environmentally friendly features for fabricating the large-scale MSHSs and enhancing their applications.

Electrochemical energy storage electrodes from fruit biochar

This review investigates the electrochemical energy storage electrode (EESE) as the most important part of the electrochemical energy storage devices (EES) prepared from fruit-derived carbon. The EES devices include batteries, supercapacitors, and hybrid devices that have various regular and advanced applications. The preparation of EESE from fruit wastes not only reduce the price of the electrode but also lead to enhance the electrochemical properties of the electrode. The astonishing results of fruits biochar at electrochemical analyses guarantee the performance of these electrodes as EESE. Also, using fruit waste as the precursor of the EESE due to protect the environment and reduce environmental pollutions.
