Thermal Conductive Polymer Composites: Recent Progress and Applications

As microelectronics technology advances towards miniaturization and higher integration, the imperative for developing high-performance thermal management materials has escalated. Thermal conductive polymer composites (TCPCs), which leverage the benefits of polymer matrices and the unique effects of nano-enhancers, are gaining focus as solutions to overheating due to their low density, ease of processing, and cost-effectiveness. However, these materials often face challenges such as thermal conductivities that are lower than expected, limiting their application in high-performance electronic devices. Despite these issues, TCPCs continue to demonstrate broad potential across various industrial sectors. This review comprehensively presents the progress in this field, detailing the mechanisms of thermal conductivity (TC) in these composites and discussing factors that influence thermal performance, such as the intrinsic properties of polymers, interfacial thermal resistance, and the thermal properties of fillers. Additionally, it categorizes and summarizes methods to enhance the TC of polymer composites. The review also highlights the applications of these materials in emerging areas such as flexible electronic devices, personal thermal management, and aerospace. Ultimately, by analyzing current challenges and opportunities, this review provides clear directions for future research and development.

Analysis of the flame retardancy effect of boron-containing compound on polyester-cotton blended fabric

Flame-retardant finishing of textile materials is crucial for ensuring human safety and mitigating fire hazards. Though various textile fibers have inherent flame-resistant properties, cotton fiber has a higher affinity to burn. This research focused on developing non-durable FR treatments for cotton-rich polyester-cotton (T/C) blended products economically, using boron-containing compounds. Because of the high melting point use of borax on T/C fabric reduces the fabric's flammability. Boric acid was also used as an auxiliary substrate and Di-sodium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate was used for its cleaning and softening properties. Borax and boric acid create a layer of char when burned and stop the flame. We used the impregnation method for this finishing process. After the chemical finish on different types of T/C fabric, we completed different types of tests like 45 0 flame retardant, LOI, SEM, breaking strength, drapability, crease recovery, and water vapor transmission tests, and found the desired properties. It increased the flame retardancy and crease recovery properties but the slight reduction of the fabric strength was noticed in case of excessive coating. Water vapor transmission property also reduced gradually with the increase of chemical concentration. Since the chemicals are available in the local market and lower in cost than common FR chemicals, it is more economical.

A Critical Review on Hydrogen Based Fuel Cell Technology and Applications

The research in energy storage and conversion is playing a critical role in energy policy as the innovation and technological progress are essential for achieving the energy transition and climate neutrality goals. Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology is considered a strategic element in the pursuit of sustainable and clean energy solutions. This technology is increasingly gaining attention in recent years as a potential substitute to conventional non-renewable energy sources. Fuel cell technology can be employed for domestic/commercial use along with powering the transportation sector which currently employs the use of conventional battery systems. However, these systems pose severe limitations with respect to longer charging times and limited distance range. This review article aims at providing a comprehensive methodical overview of hydrogen-based fuel cell technology along with key concepts, present day scenarios, including overview of the market and industry trends, government policies and initiatives, along with major stakeholders involved in scaling up the technology for mass consumption. The outlook of fuel cells, including their capability to revolutionise the energy sector is discussed. The technological advancements and breakthroughs on the horizon along with the challenges and safety concerns related to the widespread acceptance of fuel cells are analysed.

Layered Structure and Wear Mechanism of Concentrated Polymer Brushes

Concentrated polymer brushes (CPBs), which are significantly denser and thicker than conventional semidilute polymer brushes, have received increasing attention in the field of tribology because of their superlow friction properties. However, despite numerous studies aimed at enhancing CPBs for mechanical applications, the relationship between the specific layered structure and lubrication mechanisms of CPBs is still not completely understood. In this study, to reveal the relationship, simultaneous time-resolved measurements of the interfacial gap, static mechanical response, and dynamic mechanical response of the CPB at the contact interface were conducted using optical interference and precise force measuring methods. Two types of tests (i.e., the "indentation" and "sliding" tests) were alternately performed on a glass substrate coated with the CPB against a steel ball immersed in an ionic liquid. The indentation tests measuring the time-resolved interfacial gap and changes in static and dynamic mechanical responses quantitatively confirmed the presence of dilute, middle, and concentrated layers in the CPB. In the sliding tests, the wear of the CPB was detected by observing a decrease in the interfacial gap at the contact interface. Moreover, the thickness of the dilute layer remained constant with sliding, whereas the thicknesses of the other layers decreased, indicating that the dilute layer was continuously formed due to sliding. Therefore, CPB wear occurs randomly at the friction interface alongside the formation of a dilute layer with low density and stiffness on the surface.

Synthesis and Applications of Supramolecular Flame Retardants: A Review

The development of different efficient flame retardants (FRs) to improve the fire safety of polymers has been a hot research topic. As the concept of green sustainability has gradually been raised to the attention of the whole world, it has even dominated the research direction of all walks of life. Therefore, there is an urgent calling to explore the green and simple preparation methods of FRs. The development of supramolecular chemistry in the field of flame retardancy is expanding gradually. It is worth noting that the synthesis of supramolecular flame retardants (SFRs) based on non-covalent bonds is in line with the current concepts of environmental protection and multi-functionality. This paper introduces the types of SFRs with different dimensions. SFRs were applied to typical polymers to improve their flame retardancy. The influence on mechanical properties and other material properties under the premise of flame retardancy was also summarized.
