Abstract
We have synthesized a completely new family of acyclic trimeric cyclodiphosphazane compounds comprising NH, Ni Pr, Nt Bu and NPh bridging groups. In addition, the first NH-bridged acyclic dimeric cyclophosphazane has been produced. The trimeric species display highly tuneable characteristics so that the distance between the terminal N(H)R moieties can be readily modulated by the steric bulk present in the bridging groups (ranging from ≈6 to ≈10 Å). Moreover, these species exhibit pronounced topological changes when a weak non-bonding NH⋅⋅⋅π aryl interaction is introduced. Finally, the NH-bridged chloride binding affinities have been calculated and benchmarked along with the existing experimental data available for monomeric cyclodiphosphazanes. Our results underscore these species as promising hydrogen bond donors for supramolecular host-guest applications.

Abstract
The reactions of cyclodiphosphazane derivatives cis-{(t)BuN(H)P(μ-N(t)Bu)2PN(H)(t)Bu} (1), cis-{MeN(C4H8N)P(μ-N(t)Bu)2P(NC4H8Me)} (2) and {(Me2NCH2CH2O)P(μ-N(t)Bu)2P(OCH2CH2NMe2)} (3) with methyl iodide and methyl triflate and their subsequent reactions with elemental sulfur and selenium are reported. Interestingly, the reactions of 1-3 with an excess of methyl iodide resulted in quaternising only one phosphorus atom in cis-[{(t)BuNHP(μ-N(t)Bu)2P(CH3)NH(t)Bu}](I) (4), two exocyclic nitrogen atoms and one of the phosphorus atoms in cis-{(Me2NC4H8N)P(μ-N(t)Bu)2P(CH3)(NC4H8NMe2)}](I)3 (7) and only two exocyclic nitrogen atoms in cis-[{(Me3NCH2CH2O)P(μ-N(t)Bu)2P(OCH2CH2NMe3)}](I)2 (8). The reaction of 1 with one equiv. of methyl triflate produced cis-[{(t)BuN(H)P(μ-N(t)Bu)2P(CH3)N(H)(t)Bu}]OTf (5), whereas the same reaction in a 1 : 2 molar ratio afforded cis-{(t)BuN(H)P(CH3)(μ-N(t)Bu)2P(CH3)N(H)(t)Bu}(OTf)2 (6). Compounds 4 and 5 showed poor solubility in water, whereas 7 and 8 were high melting crystalline solids with moderate to good water solubility. Treatment of 4 with either elemental sulfur or selenium gave both cis- and trans-chalcogenide derivatives. Similar reactions of 7 and 8 produced both mono- and bischalcogenides. Reactions between 4 or 7 and CuI yielded dinuclear complexes, cis-[{Cu2(μ-I)3((t)BuN(H)P)(μ-N(t)Bu)2(P(CH3)N(H)(t)Bu)]2}(I)] (15) and cis-[{Cu2(μ-I)3[(Me2NC4H8N)P(μ-N(t)Bu)2P(CH3)(NC4H8NMe2)]2}(I)5] (16), while the reaction of 8 with CuI produced a coordination polymer [{Cu2(μ-I)3(μ-N(t)BuP)2(OCH2CH2NMe3)2}I]∞ (17), containing triiodo-bridged [Cu2(μ-I)3] linkers. The molecular structures of several of these compounds were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The Cu(I)···Cu(I) distance of 2.55 Å in 15 is quite short and is the same as that found in copper metal and also in complexes containing [Cu2(μ-I)3] linkers. All the metal complexes exhibit strong intra-, inter- or both intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonding interactions.

Abstract
A series of dichlorocyclophosphazanes [{ClP(μ-NR)}2 ] containing chiral and achiral R groups was obtained from simple commercially available amines and PCl3 . Their condensation reactions with axially chiral biaryl diols yielded ansa-bridged chiral cyclophosphazane (CycloP) ligands. This highly modular methodology allows extensive elaboration of the ligand set, in which the chirality can be introduced at the diol bridge and/or the amido R group. This provides the possibility to observe match and mismatch effects in catalysis. A series of twenty CycloP ligands was synthesized and characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, HRMS, elemental analysis, and in selected cases, single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These studies show that all of the ditopic CycloP ligands are C2 symmetric, rendering their metal coordination sites symmetry equivalent. Two well-established enantioselective reactions were explored by using late-transition metal CycloP complexes as catalysts; the gold-catalyzed hydroamination of γ-allenyl sulfonamides and the asymmetric nickel-catalyzed three-component coupling of a diene and an aldehyde. The steric demands of the CycloP ligands have a subtle influence on the reactivity and selectivity observed in both reactions. Good enantiomeric ratios (e.r.) as high as 89:11 in the gold-catalyzed reaction and 92:8 in the nickel-catalyzed bis-homoallylation reaction were observed.

Abstract
Structural characterization of compounds analogous to the proposed intermediates in the Mitsunobu esterification process is achieved by the combined use of NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometric studies. The results show that compounds (t-BuNH)P(mu-N-t-Bu)(2)P[(N-t-Bu)(N-(CO(2)R)-N(H)(CO(2)R))] [R = Et (11), i-Pr (12)], obtained by treating [(t-Bu-NH)P-mu-N-t-Bu](2) (10) with diethylazodicarboxylate (DEAD) or diisopropylazodicarboxylate (DIAD), respectively, have a structure with the NH proton residing between the two nitrogen atoms ((P)N(t-Bu) and (P)N-N(CO(2)Et)); this is the tautomeric form of the expected betaine (t-BuNH)P(mu-N-t-Bu)(2)P(+)[(NH-t-Bu)(N-(CO(2)R)-N(-)(CO(2)R)]. Treatment of ClP(mu-N-t-Bu)(2)P[(N-t-Bu){N-(CO(2)-i-Pr)-N(H)(CO(2)-i-Pr)] (6) with 2,6-dicholorophenol affords (2,6-Cl(2)-C(6)H(3)-O)P(mu-N-t-Bu)(2)P(+)[(NH-t-Bu){N[(CO(2)i-Pr)(HNCO(2)i-Pr)]}](Cl(-))(2,6-Cl(2)-C(6)H(3)-OH) (14) that has a structure similar to that of (CF(3)CH(2)O)P(mu-N-t-Bu)(2)P(+)[(NH-t-Bu){N[(CO(2)i-Pr)(HNCO(2)i-Pr)]}](Cl(-)) (13), but with an additional hydrogen bonded phenol. Both of these have the protonated betaine structure analogous to that of Ph(3)P(+)N(CO(2)R)NH(CO(2)R)(R'CO(2))(-) (2) proposed in the Mitsunobu esterification. Two other compounds, (ArO)P(mu-N-t-Bu)(2)P(+)(NH-t-Bu){N(CO(2)i-Pr)(HNCO(2)i-Pr)}(Cl(-)) [Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3)O- (15) and 2-Me-6-t-Bu-C(6)H(3)-O- (16)], are also prepared by the same route. Although NMR tube reactions of 11 or 12 with tetrachlorocatechol, catechol, 2,2'-biphenol, and phenol revealed significant changes in the (31)P NMR spectra, attempted isolation of these products was not successful. On the basis of (31)P NMR spectra, the phosphonium salt structure (t-BuNH)P(mu-N-t-Bu)(2)P(+)[(HN-t-Bu){N-(CO(2)R)-N(H)(CO(2)R)](ArO(-)) is proposed for these. The weakly acidic propan-2-ol or water did not react with 11 or 12. Treatment of 12 with carboxylic acids/ p-toluenesulfonic acid gave the products (t-BuNH)P(mu-N-t-Bu)(2)P(+)[(HN-t-Bu){N-(CO(2)-i-Pr)-N(H)(CO(2)-i-Pr)](ArCO(2)(-)) [Ar = Ph (18), 4-Cl-C(6)H(4)CH(2) (19), 4-Br-C(6)H(4) (20), 4-NO(2)-C(6)H(4) (21)] and (t-BuNH)P(mu-N-t-Bu)(2)P(+)[(HN-t-Bu){N-(CO(2)-i-Pr)-N(H)(CO(2)-i-Pr)](4-CH(3)-C(6)H(4)SO(3)(-)) (22) that have essentially the same structure as 2. Compound 18 has additional stabilization by hydrogen bonding, as revealed by X-ray structure determination. Finally it is shown that the in situ generated (t-BuNH)P(mu-N-t-Bu)(2)P(+)[(HN-t-Bu){N-(CO(2)Et)-N(H)(CO(2)Et)](4-NO(2)-C(6)H(4)CO(2)(-)) can also effect Mitsunobu esterification. A comparison of the Ph(3)P-DIAD system with the analogous synthetically useful Ph(3)P-dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) system is made.
