Mono-Ortho-Beryllated Carbodiphosphoranes: Synthesis, Structure, Bonding and Reactivity

The reaction of organoberyllium compounds with hexaphenylcarbodiphosphorane yields mono-ortho-beryllated complexes, which feature a double dative Be=C bond. The bonding situation in these compounds together with a simple carbodiphosphorane and an N-heterocyclic carbene adduct was analysed with energy decomposition analysis in combination with natural orbital for chemical valence as well as with quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules. Furthermore, the driving forces accountable for mono-ortho-beryllation were elucidated along with the reactivity of the Be=C bond.

Recent progress in beryllium organometallic chemistry

Beryllium possesses a unique amalgamation of characteristics, its electronegativity included, that not only make it a vital component in a wide range of technical sectors and consumer industries, but also make it an interesting candidate for forming covalently bonded compounds. However, the extremely toxic nature of beryllium, which can cause chronic beryllium disease, has limited the exploration of its chemistry, making beryllium one of the least studied (non-radioactive) elements. The development of selective chelating ligands, sterically encumbered substituents and, moreover, the boom of N-heterocyclic carbenes in organometallic chemistry and main group chemistry has revived the interest in beryllium chemistry. Therefore, some quite remarkable progress in the coordination and organometallic chemistry of beryllium has been made in the last two decades. For example, low oxidation state beryllium compounds, antiaromatic/aromatic beryllium compounds, where beryllium is involved in π-electron delocalization, and the isolation of beryllium-beryllium bonded species have all been achieved. This article provides an oversight over the recent developments in the organometallic chemistry of beryllium.

Geminal bimetallic coordination of a carbone to main-group and transition metals

The non-bonding carbone lone pair in geometrically-constrained antimony and bismuth carbodiphosphorane complexes readily complexed AuCl to afford rare examples of geminal bimetallic carbone coordination featuring a main-group metal.

A Personal Account on Inorganic Reaction Mechanisms

The presented Review is focused on the latest research in the field of inorganic chemistry performed by the van Eldik group and his collaborators. The first part of the manuscript concentrates on the interaction of nitric oxide and its derivatives with biologically important compounds. We summarized mechanistic information on the interaction between model porphyrin systems (microperoxidase) and NO as well as the recent studies on the formation of nitrosylcobalamin (CblNO). The following sections cover the characterization of the Ru(II)/Ru(III) mixed-valence ion-pair complexes, including Ru(II)/Ru(III)(edta) complexes. The last part concerns the latest mechanistic information on the DFT techniques applications. Each section presents the most important results with the mechanistic interpretations.

Beryllium compounds for the carbon-halogen bond activation of phenyl halides: the role of non-innocent ligands

Beryllium is a metallomimetic main-group element, i.e., it behaves similarly to transition metals (TMs) in some bond activation processes. To investigate the ability of Be compounds to activate C-X bonds (X = F-I), we have computationally investigated, using DFT methods, the reaction of (CAAC)2Be (CAAC = 1-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidin-2-ylidene) and a series of five-membered heterocyclic beryllium bidentate ligands with phenyl halides. We have analysed all plausible reaction mechanisms and our results show that, after the initial C-X oxidative addition, migration of the phenyl group occurs towards the less electronegative heteroatom. Our theoretical study highlights the important role of bidentate non-innocent ligands in providing the required electrons for the initial Ph-X oxidative addition. In contrast, the monodentate ligand, CAAC, does not favour this oxidative addition.

N-Heterocyclic carbene, carbodiphosphorane and diphosphine adducts of beryllium dihalides: synthesis, characterisation and reduction studies

Reaction of several N-heterocyclic carbenes, a carbodiphosphorane, and bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (DPPE) with [BeX2(OEt2)2] (X = Br or I) have yielded a variety of beryllium dihalide adduct complexes, all of which were crystallographically characterised. Attempts to reduce the compounds to low oxidation state beryllium complexes using a variety of reducing agents have been carried out, but were of limited success. However, reaction of [(IPr)BeBr2] (IPr = :C{(DipNCH)2}; Dip = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) with the aluminium(i) heterocycle, [:Al(DipNacnac)] (DipNacnac = [HC(MeCNDip)2]-) afforded the adduct complex, [{(IPr)(Br)Be(μ-H)}2], while reduction of [(IPr)BeBr2] with potassium naphthalenide gave the beryllium naphthalenediyl complex, [(IPr)Be(C10H8)]. Furthermore, reaction of [{(DPPE)BeI2}∞], with [:Al(DipNacnac)] led to insertion of the Al centre of the heterocycle into a Be-I bond, and formation of a rare example of an Al-Be bonded complex, [(DPPE)(i)Be-Al(i)(DipNacnac)].

Crystallographic study of a heteroleptic chloroberyllium borohydride carbodicarbene complex

Interest in beryllium, the lightest member of group 2 elements, has grown substantially within the synthetic community. Herein, we report the synthesis and crystal structure of a heteroleptic haloberyllium borohydride bis(1-isopropyl-3-methyl-benzimidazol-2-ylidene)methane ‘carbodicarbene’ (CDC) complex [(CDC)BeCl(BH4)]. Crystallographic data: Triclinic space group P1̅, a = 8.8695(14), b = 12.394(2), c = 16.844(3) Å, α = 102.395(4), β = 96.456(4), γ = 99.164(4)°, wR2 (all data) = 0.2706 for 6720 unique data and 357 refined parameters.

Intriguing structural, bonding and reactivity features in some beryllium containing complexes

We highlighted our contributions to Be chemistry which include bond-stretch isomerism in Be₃²⁻ species, Be complexes bound with noble gas, CO, and N₂, Be based nanorotors, and intriguing bonding situations in some Be complexes.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Supported Aryl- and Alk- oxides of Beryllium and Magnesium

Recently, we have witnessed significant progress with regard to the synthesis of molecular alkaline earth metal reagents and catalysts. To provide new precursors for light alkaline earth metal chemistry, molecular aryloxide and alkoxide complexes of beryllium and magnesium are reported. The reaction of beryllium chloride dietherate with two equivalents of 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidizol-2-ylidine (sIPr) results in the formation of a bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) (NHC) beryllium dichloride complex, (sIPr)2BeCl2 (1). Compound 1 reacts with lithium diisopropylphenoxide (LiODipp) or sodium ethoxide (NaOEt) to form the terminal aryloxide (sIPr)Be(ODipp)2 (2) and alkoxide dimer [(sIPr)Be(OEt)Cl]2 (3), respectively. Compounds 2 and 3 represent the first beryllium alkoxide and aryloxide species supported by NHCs. Structurally related dimers of magnesium, [(sIPr)Mg(OEt)Brl]2 (4) and [(sIPr)Mg(OEt)Me]2 (5), were also prepared. Compounds 1-5 were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, 1H, 13C, and 9Be NMR spectroscopy where applicable.

Hexaphenyl carbodiphosphorane adducts of heavier group 15 element trichlorides: syntheses, properties and reactivities

Herein, we present a series of hexaphenyl carbodiphosphorane (CDP^Ph) adducts of heavier group 15 trichlorides ECl₃ (E = P-Bi). The reaction with PCl₃ yields the known salt [CDP^Ph-PCl₂][Cl] ([1][Cl]), the heavier element trichlorides ECl₃ (E = Sb (4), Bi (5)) give the neutral adducts CDP^Ph-ECl₃ which were characterised crystallographically and spectroscopically. The reaction of CDP^Ph with AsCl₃ does not yield CDP^Ph-AsCl₃ (2), but in the presence of GaCl₃ the corresponding salt [CDP^Ph-AsCl₂][GaCl₄] ([3][GaCl₄]) is formed. DFT (density functional theory) calculations were carried out to examine the molecular frontier orbitals in 1⁺-5. Additional reactivity studies revealed an intramolecular electrophilic aromatic substitution (S_EAr) in 1⁺, which represents an excellent starting point for further selective C-P bond formation reactions.

Reactivity of the carbodiphosphorane, (Ph3P)2C, towards main group metal alkyl compounds: coordination and cyclometalation

The carbodiphosphorane, (Ph3P)2C, reacts with Me3Al and Me3Ga to afford the adducts, [(Ph3P)2C]AlMe3 and [(Ph3P)2C]GaMe3, which have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. (Ph3P)2C also reacts with Me2Zn and Me2Cd to generate an adduct but the formation is reversible on the NMR time scale. At elevated temperatures, however, elimination of methane and cyclometalation occurs to afford [κ2-Ph3PC{PPh2(C6H4)}]ZnMe and [κ2-Ph3PC{PPh2(C6H4)}]CdMe. Analogous cyclometalated products, [κ2-Ph3P{CPPh2(C6H4)}]ZnN(SiMe3)2 and [κ2-Ph3P{CPPh2(C6H4)}]CdN(SiMe3)2, are also obtained upon reaction of (Ph3P)2C with Zn[N(SiMe3)2]2 and Cd[N(SiMe3)2]2. The magnesium compounds, Me2Mg and {Mg[N(SiMe3)2]2}2, likewise react with (Ph3P)2C to afford cyclometalated derivatives, namely [κ2-Ph3PC{PPh2(C6H4)}]MgN(SiMe3)2 and {[κ2-Ph3PC{PPh2(C6H4)}]MgMe}2. While this reactivity is similar to the zinc system, the magnesium methyl complex is a dimer with bridging methyl groups, whereas the zinc complex is a monomer. The greater tendency of the methyl groups to bridge magnesium centers rather than zinc centers is supported by density functional theory calculations.

Geminal Dianions Stabilized by Main Group Elements

This review is dedicated to the chemistry of stable and isolable species that bear two lone pairs at the same C center, i.e., geminal dianions, stabilized by main group elements. Three cases can thus be considered: the geminal-dilithio derivative, for which the two substituents at C are neutral, the yldiide derivatives, for which one substituent is neutral while the other is charged, and finally the geminal bisylides, for which the two substituents are positively charged. In this review, the syntheses and electronic structures of the geminal dianions are presented, followed by the studies dedicated to their reactivity toward organic substrates and finally to their coordination chemistry and applications.

RJ. s-Block carbodicarbene chemistry: C(sp3)–H activation and cyclization mediated by a beryllium center

The first examples of carbodicarbene (CDC)-s-block complexes have been synthesized. Unusual C–H bond activation and cyclization discovered.

Carboberyllation: addition of organoberyllium species to alkenes and alkynes. A comparison with carboboration

The potential for carbometallation reactions between organoberyllium and model alkenes and alkynes has been investigated in a computational study. Results indicate that barriers for carbometallation reactions between BeR₂ and alkynes are as low as 100 kJ mol^-1, and much lower than corresponding reactions with MgR₂. In contrast to carboboration reactions with BR₃, with organoberyllium 1,2-addition is favoured over 1,1-addition. It is concluded that carbometallation reactions with beryllium are likely feasible, and that the reaction between BePh₂ and alkynes provides the best opportunity for the first experimental observation of carboberyllation.

Three and four coordinate Fe carbodiphosphorane complexes

Carbodiphosphoranes (CDPs) are a family of divalent carbon ligands that are known for their exceptional electron donor properties. Herein, the preparation and reactivity of a family of three and four co-ordinate Fe carbodiphosphorane complexes is described. Hexaphenylcarbodiphosphorane (HCDP) [1] is shown to react with FeCl₂(PPh₃)₂ to form the three coordinate adduct Fe(HCDP)Cl₂ [2], which is equilibrium with its four coordinate dimer. Reaction of [2] with two equivalents of benzyl Grignard yields the corresponding dialkyl complex (HCDP)FeBn₂ [3]. Combination of [2] with LiHMDS results in salt metathesis and the formation of the monosilylated derivative Fe(HCDP)Cl(N(SiMe₃)₂) [4]. Subsequent anion exchange leads to the three coordinate Fe(HCDP)(OTf)(N(SiMe₃)₂) [5] which was characterized crystallographically and in solution.

The Oxygen-Rich Beryllium Oxides BeO4 and BeO6

Two novel isomers of BeO4 with the structures OBeOOO and OBe(O3 ) in the electronic triplet state have been prepared as well as the known disuperoxide complex Be(O2 )2 in solid noble-gas matrices. We also report the synthesis of the oxygen-rich bis(ozonide) complex Be(O3 )2 in the triplet state which has a D2d equilibrium geometry. The molecular structures were identified by infrared absorption spectroscopy with isotopic substitutions as well as quantum chemical calculations.

Cyclic bent allene hydrido-carbonyl complexes of ruthenium: highly active catalysts for hydrogenation of olefins

A new family of ruthenium complexes bearing the carbodicarbene-type ligand "cyclic bent allene" (CBA) have been synthesized from the common precursor RuHCl(CO)(PPh3)3. Complexes were evaluated for catalytic activity in the room-temperature hydrogenation of unactivated olefins and were found to be significantly more active than known ruthenium hydrido-carbonyl phosphine or NHC complexes. In particular, RuH(OSO2CF3)(CO)(SIMes)(CBA) was found to be among the most active hydrogenation catalysts, achieving comparable activity to Crabtree's catalyst in the hydrogenation of unactivated trisubstituted olefins and superior activity in the hydrogenation of styrene derivatives in side-by-side catalytic runs. RuH(OSO2CF3)(CO)(SIMes)(CBA) was also found to be highly active in olefin selective hydrogenation in the presence of a variety of unsaturated functional groups, and can achieve exceptional diastereoselectivity in functional-group-directed hydrogenations at very low catalyst loadings.

Beryllium chemistry the safe way: a theoretical evaluation of low oxidation state beryllium compounds

A theoretical study of compounds containing Be in the +1 or 0 oxidation state has been carried out. The molecules considered containing Be in the +1 oxidation state are analogues of the important Mg(I)-Mg(I) dimer supported by the β-diketiminate ligand. The molecules in the 0 oxidation state are NHC supported compounds analogous to "molecular allotropes" which has recently become a topic of importance in p-block chemistry. In this case, our results demonstrate that the Be(0) complexes are far more stable than the analogous Mg(0) complexes, highlighting the opportunities afforded in Be chemistry, despite the challenges presented by the toxicity of Be compounds.
