Applications of metal‐organic frameworks and zeolites to virus detection and control: biosensors, barriers, and biocomposites

Application and Development Prospect of Nanoscale Iron Based Metal-Organic Frameworks in Biomedicine

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are coordination polymers that comprise metal ions/clusters and organic ligands. MOFs have been extensively employed in different fields (eg, gas adsorption, energy storage, chemical separation, catalysis, and sensing) for their versatility, high porosity, and adjustable geometry. To be specific, Fe2+/Fe3+ exhibits unique redox chemistry, photochemical and electrical properties, as well as catalytic activity. Fe-based MOFs have been widely investigated in numerous biomedical fields over the past few years. In this study, the key index requirements of Fe-MOF materials in the biomedical field are summarized, and a conclusion is drawn in terms of the latest application progress, development prospects, and future challenges of Fe-based MOFs as drug delivery systems, antibacterial therapeutics, biocatalysts, imaging agents, and biosensors in the biomedical field.

Virus Management Using Metal-Organic Framework-Based Technologies

The eradication and isolation of viruses are two concurrent approaches to protect ourselves from viral infections and diseases. The quite versatile porous materials called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have recently emerged as efficient nanosized tools to manage viruses, and several strategies to accomplish these tasks have been developed. This review describes these strategies employing nanoscale MOFs against SARS-CoV-2, HIV-1, tobacco mosaic virus, etc., which include the sequestration by host-guest penetration inside pores, mineralization, design of a physical barrier, controlled delivery of organic and inorganic antiviral drugs or bioinhibitors, photosensitization of singlet oxygen, and direct contact with inherently cytotoxic MOFs.

Textile Functionalization Using LTA and FAU Zeolitic Materials

COVID-19 has drawn worldwide attention to the need for personal protective equipment. Face masks can be transformed from passive filters into active protection. For this purpose, it is sufficient to apply materials with oligodynamic effect to the fabric of the masks, which makes it possible to destroy infectious agents that have fallen on the mask with aerosol droplets from the air stream. Zeolites themselves are not oligodynamic materials, but can serve as carriers for nanoparticles of metals and/or compounds of silver, zinc, copper, and other materials with biocidal properties. Such a method, when the particles are immobilized on the surface of the substrate, will increase the lifetime of the active oligodynamic material. In this work, we present the functionalization of textile materials with zeolites to obtain active personal protective equipment with an extended service life. This is done with the aim to extend the synthesis of zeolitic materials to polymeric fabrics beyond cotton. The samples were characterized using XRD, SEM, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Data of physicochemical studies of the obtained hybrid materials (fabrics with crystals grown on fibers) will be presented, with a focus on the effect of fabrics in the growth process of zeolites.

Nanosphere Structures Using Various Materials: A Strategy for Signal Amplification for Virus Sensing

Nanomaterials have been explored in the sensing research field in the last decades. Mainly, 3D nanomaterials have played a vital role in advancing biomedical applications, and less attention was given to their application in the field of biosensors for pathogenic virus detection. The versatility and tunability of a wide range of nanomaterials contributed to the development of a rapid, portable biosensor platform. In this review, we discuss 3D nanospheres, one of the classes of nanostructured materials with a homogeneous and dense matrix wherein a guest substance is carried within the matrix or on its surface. This review is segmented based on the type of nanosphere and their elaborative application in various sensing techniques. We emphasize the concept of signal amplification strategies using different nanosphere structures constructed from a polymer, carbon, silica, and metal-organic framework (MOF) for rendering high-level sensitivity of virus detection. We also briefly elaborate on some challenges related to the further development of nanosphere-based biosensors, including the toxicity issue of the used nanomaterial and the commercialization hurdle.
