A captivating approach to elevate the detection of Al3+ ions incorporates the utilization of a tripodal receptor intricately embellishing the surface of zinc oxide

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration, (USA)) lists ZnO as a material that is widely acknowledged to be safe. ZnO NPs with a range of tiny particle sizes were made using the precipitation process. ZnO nanoparticles' surface is embellished with a tripodal sensor containing naphthol units. The assembly with the same receptor decorated on ZnO NPs is contrasted with the cation detection capabilities of the purified tripodal receptor. The UV-visible spectrophotometric analysis was conducted to study the state transitions of the receptor and the decorated ZnO receptor. A positive selectivity to Al3+ cations is determined by the fluorescence study under ideal circumstances. The particle size and surface morphologies are determined by DLS and SEM analysis for the same receptor - TP1 and embellished with a tripodal receptor TP2. Using a fluorescence switch-on Photoinduced Electron Transfer (PET) mechanism, the receptor coated on ZnO detects the presence of Al3+ ions with specificity. The binding constant value was determined using the B-H plot equation. Binding stoichiometry for [TP1-Al3+, TP2-Al3+] showed a 1:1 ratio. The fluorescence switches ON-OFF process of the ZnO surface adorned - TP2 with Tripodal receptor- TP1 was used to create molecular logic gates, which can function as a module for sensors and molecular switches. The addition of Na2EDTA in the solution of the [TP1; TP2 - Al3+] complex resulted in a noticeable reduction in the emission of fluorescence. This finding offers compelling support for the reversibility of the chemosensor. To enable the practical application of this sensor, we have developed a cassette containing receptors TP1 and TP2. Successfully, it can detect Al3+ metal ions. We performed a comprehensive assessment of the dependability and appropriateness of our approach in measuring the concentration of Al3+ ions in wastewater produced by important industrial procedures.

Metal-organic complex coating for enhanced corrosion control and biocompatibility on biodegradable magnesium alloy for orthopaedic implants

Magnesium alloy is currently regarded as the most favourable biodegradable metal; however, obstacles remain to be overcome in terms of managing its corrosion and ensuring its biocompatibility. In this study, a metal-organic complex comprising Ca ions incorporated in tannic acid (TA) was prepared and used to coat magnesium alloy by chemical conversion and dipping processes, followed by modification with stearic acid (SA). This metal-organic complex coating was demonstrated to be homogeneous and compact, and it significantly improved the electrochemical corrosion resistance and long-term degradation behaviour of the coated samples. Consequently, the well-controlled release of Mg and Ca ions, as well as the osteo-compatible TA and SA molecules, promoted the proliferation of osteoblast cells. This metal-organic complex coating offers a promising modifying strategy for magnesium-based orthopaedic implants.

Recent Advancements and Future Prospects in NBD-Based Fluorescent Chemosensors: Design Strategy, Sensing Mechanism, and Biological Applications

In recent years, the field of Supramolecular Chemistry has witnessed tremendous progress owing to the development of versatile optical sensors for the detection of harmful biological analytes. Nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD) is one such scaffold that has been exploited as fluorescent probes for selective recognition of harmful analytes and their optical imaging in various cell lines including HeLa, PC3, A549, SMMC-7721, MDA-MB-231, HepG2, MFC-7, etc. The NBD-derived molecular probes are majorly synthesized from the chloro derivative of NBD via nucleophilic aromatic substitution. This general NBD moiety ligation method to nucleophiles has been leveraged to develop various derivatives for sensing analytes. NBD-derived probes are extensively used as optical sensors because of remarkable properties like excellent stability, large Stoke's shift, high efficiency and stability, visible excitation, easy use, low cost, and high quantum yield. This article reviewed NBD-based probes for the years 2017-2023 according to the sensing of analyte(s), including cations, anions, thiols, and small molecules like hydrogen sulfide. The sensing mechanism, designing of the probe, plausible binding mechanism, and biological application of chemosensors are summarized. The real-time application of optical sensors has been discussed by various methods, such as paper strips, molecular logic gates, smartphone detection, development of test kits, etc. This article will update the researchers with the in vivo and in vitro biological applicability of NBD-based molecular probes and challenges the research fraternity to design, propose, and develop better chemosensors in the future possessing commercial utility.

An Indole-based Chromofluorogenic Probe for Detection of Trivalent Al3+, Ga3+, In3+ and Fe3+ Ions

An easily synthesizable indole-derived chromofluorogenic probe InNS has been demonstrated for recognition of trivalent metal ions (i. e., Al3+, Ga3+, In3+ and Fe3+). Both UV-Vis and emission spectral studies have been employed to assess the cation sensing ability of InNS in semi-aqueous medium. This probe exhibited a chromogenic response for these metal ions, and the related change was accompanied with the appearance of a new absorption near 376 nm. An obvious color change from pale yellow to dark yellow could also be noticed upon addition of the aforementioned metal ions to the probe's solution. Distinctively from the UV-Vis analysis, the fluorescence behavior of InNS was completely different; it displayed a 'turn-on' fluorescence response for only Al3+ among all the studied cations. The detection limit and the association constant (Ka) for Al3+ were determined to be 12.5 nM and 6.85×106 M-1, respectively. A potential 1 : 1 binding mode of Al3+-InNS has been established based on Job's plot, 1H NMR and DFT analyses. The reversibility experiment was conducted using strongly chelating EDTA ion, and a corresponding logic gate has been devised. In terms of practical applications, the InNS has been utilized to detect Al3+ in human breast carcinoma (MCF-7) cell lines displaying promising 'turn-on' bioimaging experiments.

A dysprosium(III)-based triple helical-like complex as a turn-on/off fluorescence sensor for Al(III) and 4,5-dimethyl-2-nitroaniline

A novel triple helical-like complex [Dy2K2L3(NO3)2]·3DMF (1) based on a designed Schiff base N'1,N'3-bis((E)-3-ethoxy-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-malonohydrazide (H4L) was synthesized with good chemical and thermal stabilities. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis showed that 1 presents a tetranuclear triple helical-like structure via the coordination mode of Dy : K : L with 2 : 2 : 3 stoichiometry. Fluorescence measurements showed that 1@EtOH has excellent fluorescence turn-on/off response ability for aluminium ions and 4,5-dimethyl-2-nitroaniline (DMNA) with outstanding selectivity, sensitivity, and anti-interference ability. The calculated limit of detection (LOD) values for 1@EtOH to Al3+ and DMNA were found to be 0.53 and 3.33 μM, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed that the fluorescence response mechanism can be explained by the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism; meanwhile, the inner filter effect (IFE) of DMNA can also affect the emission of 1@EtOH.

Fretting and Fretting Corrosion Behavior of Additively Manufactured Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-Nb-Zr Alloys in Air and Physiological Solutions

Additive manufacturing (AM) of orthopedic implants has increased in recent years, providing benefits to surgeons, patients, and implant companies. Both traditional and new titanium alloys are under consideration for AM-manufactured implants. However, concerns remain about their wear and corrosion (tribocorrosion) performance. In this study, the effects of fretting corrosion were investigated on AM Ti-29Nb-21Zr (pre-alloyed and admixed) and AM Ti-6Al-4V with 1% nano yttria-stabilized zirconia (nYSZ). Low cycle (100 cycles, 3 Hz, 100 mN) fretting and fretting corrosion (potentiostatic, 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl) methods were used to compare these AM alloys to traditionally manufactured AM Ti-6Al-4V. Alloy and admixture surfaces were subjected to (1) fretting in the air (i.e., small-scale reciprocal sliding) and (2) fretting corrosion in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) using a single diamond asperity (17 µm radius). Wear track depth measurements, fretting currents and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) analysis of oxide debris revealed that pre-alloyed AM Ti-29Nb-21Zr generally had greater wear depths after 100 cycles (4.67 +/- 0.55 µm dry and 5.78 +/- 0.83 µm in solution) and higher fretting currents (0.58 +/- 0.07 µA). A correlation (R2 = 0.67) was found between wear depth and the average fretting currents with different alloys located in different regions of the relationship. No statistically significant differences were observed in wear depth between in-air and in-PBS tests. However, significantly higher amounts of oxygen (measured by oxygen weight % by EDS analysis of the debris) were embedded within the wear track for tests performed in PBS compared to air for all samples except the ad-mixed Ti-29Nb-21Zr (p = 0.21). For traditional and AM Ti-6Al-4V, the wear track depths (dry fretting: 2.90 +/- 0.32 µm vs. 2.51 +/- 0.51 μm, respectively; fretting corrosion: 2.09 +/- 0.59 μm vs. 1.16 +/- 0.79 μm, respectively) and fretting current measurements (0.37 +/- 0.05 μA vs. 0.34 +/- 0.05 μA, respectively) showed no significant differences. The dominant wear deformation process was plastic deformation followed by cyclic extrusion of plate-like wear debris at the end of the stroke, resulting in ribbon-like extruded material for all alloys. While previous work documented improved corrosion resistance of Ti-29Nb-21Zr in simulated inflammatory solutions over Ti-6Al-4V, this work does not show similar improvements in the relative fretting corrosion resistance of these alloys compared to Ti-6Al-4V.

Fluorescent MOF and Its Gel Composite for the Fluorescence Recovery "Turn-On" Detection of Al3+ Ions and "Turn-Off" Detection of Oxo-Anions

The exploration of smart sensors is of great significance for the selectivity, sensitivity, and ability to show the low detection limit for the target analyte. Here, we have used the linker H2L (5-((anthracen-9-ylmethyl)amino)isophthalic acid) for the construction of {[Cd(L)(DMF)(H2O)2]·H2O}n (1) which is in order with the chromophore anthracene moiety and the free -NH functionality as a guest interaction site. This framework showed the luminescence recovery "turn-on" detection of the Al3+ ion in an aqueous solution. An exhaustive mechanism study disclosed that the Lewis acid-base-type interaction between the Al3+ ion and the -NH functionality of the linker in the framework revealed that the absorbance caused an enhancement for the "turn-on" sensing event. Besides the "turn-on" sensing event, the "turn-off" sensing phenomenon of 1 is also noticed when it detects the hazardous oxo-anions (MnO4- and CrO42-) with limit of detection values of 17.08 and 19.91 ppb, respectively. The detection of these diverse analytes are very fast (10 s) and they can also be recognized through a colorimetric response. The sensing mechanisms for these analytes are established by photoinduced electron transfer, Forster resonance energy transfer, and inert filter effect along with theoretical investigation. Furthermore, to show the sensing application of 1 in a versatile podium, a MOF gel composite, 1@AA (AA = Agar-Agar), was developed from 1 with AA. Interestingly, 1@AA showed the colorimetric detection of these analytes under UV light. Therefore, sensor 1 behaves as a smart sensory material for the recognition of the above analytes through a simultaneous "turn-on" and "turn-off" effect.

A review of the epidemiological and laboratory evidence of the role of aluminum exposure in pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases

The objective of the present study was to review the epidemiological and laboratory evidence on the role of aluminum (Al) exposure in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. Epidemiological data demonstrated an increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including hypertension and atherosclerosis in occupationally exposed subjects and hemodialysis patients. In addition, Al body burden was found to be elevated in patients with coronary heart disease, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Laboratory studies demonstrated that Al exposure induced significant ultrastructural damage in the heart, resulting in electrocardiogram alterations in association with cardiomyocyte necrosis and apoptosis, inflammation, oxidative stress, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. In agreement with the epidemiological findings, laboratory data demonstrated dyslipidemia upon Al exposure, resulting from impaired hepatic lipid catabolism, as well as promotion of low-density lipoprotein oxidation. Al was also shown to inhibit paraoxonase 1 activity and to induce endothelial dysfunction and adhesion molecule expression, further promoting atherogenesis. The role of Al in hypertension was shown to be mediated by up-regulation of NADPH-oxidase, inhibition of nitric oxide bioavailability, and stimulation of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. It has been also demonstrated that Al exposure targets cerebral vasculature, which may be considered a link between Al exposure and cerebrovascular diseases. Findings from other tissues lend support that ferroptosis, pyroptosis, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and modulation of gut microbiome and metabolome are involved in the development of CVD upon Al exposure. A better understanding of the role of the cardiovascular system as a target for Al toxicity will be useful for risk assessment and the development of treatment and prevention strategies.

A quinoline derived Schiff base as highly selective 'turn-on' probe for fluorogenic recognition of Al3+ ion

A quinoline-derived Schiff base QnSb has been synthesized for fluorescent and colorimetric recognition of Al3+ ions in a semi-aqueous medium. The compound QnSb has been characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H/13C NMR, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectral techniques. The crystal structure of the QnSb was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis. Notably, almost non-fluorescent QnSb served as a 'turn on' responsive probe for Al3+ by inducing a remarkable fluorescence enhancement at 422 nm when excited at 310 nm. The probe QnSb exhibited high selectivity for Al3+ in CH3CN/H2O (4:1, v/v) solution over several competing metal ions (e.g., Mg2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Fe3+/2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Sn2+, and Hg2+). The limit of detection (LoD) was computed as low as 15.8 nM which is significantly lower than the permissible limit set by WHO for Al3+ ions in drinking water. A 1:1 binding stoichiometry of complex QnSb-Al3+ was established with the help of Job's plot, ESI-MS, NMR and DFT analyses. Based on its remarkable sensing ability, the probe QnSb was utilized to establish molecular logic gates, and the fluorescence detection of Al3+ could clearly be demonstrated on the filter paper test strips.

A Novel Multi-Functional Fluorescence Probe for the Detection of Al3+/Zn2+/Cd2+ and its Practical Applications

A novel multi-functional fluorescence probe HMIC based on hydrazide Schiff base has been successfully synthesized and characterized. It can distinguish Al3+/Zn2+/Cd2+ in ethanol, in which fluorescence emission with different colors (blue for Al3+, orange for Zn2+, and green for Cd2+) were presented. The limits of detection of HMIC towards three ions were calculated from the titration curve as 7.70 × 10- 9 M, 4.64 × 10- 9 M, and 1.35 × 10- 8 M, respectively. The structures of HMIC and its complexes were investigated using UV-Vis spectra, Job's plot, infrared spectra, mass spectrometry, 1H-NMR and DFT calculations. Practical application studies have also demonstrated that HMIC can be applied to real samples with a low impact of potential interferents. Cytotoxicity and cellular imaging assays have shown that HMIC has good cellular permeability and potential antitumor effects. Interestingly, HMIC can image Al3+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ in the cells with different fluorescence signals.

The Role of Trace Elements in Cardiovascular Diseases

Essential trace elements play an important role in human physiology and are associated with various functions regulating cellular metabolism. Non-essential trace elements, on the other hand, often have well-documented toxicities that are dangerous for the initiation and development of diseases due to their widespread occurrence in the environment and their accumulation in living organisms. Non-essential trace elements are therefore regarded as serious environmental hazards that are harmful to health even in low concentrations. Many representatives of these elements are present as pollutants in our environment, and many people may be exposed to significant amounts of these substances over the course of their lives. Among the most common non-essential trace elements are heavy metals, which are also associated with acute poisoning in humans. When these elements accumulate in the body over years of chronic exposure, they often cause severe health damage in a variety of tissues and organs. In this review article, the role of selected essential and non-essential trace elements and their role in the development of exemplary pathophysiological processes in the cardiovascular system will be examined in more detail.

Turn-on detection of Al3+ and Zn2+ ions by a NSN donor probe: reversibility, logic gates and DFT calculations

An efficient dual functional naphthalene-derived Schiff base NpSb probe has been synthesised and evaluated for its fluorescence and chromogenic response towards metal ions. The NpSb probe was capable of selectively recognising Al3+ and Zn2+ ions when they were excited at the same wavelength in an aqueous organic solvent system. Almost non-fluorescent NpSb displayed a 'turn-on' fluorescence response when treated with Zn2+ (λem = 416 nm) and Al3+ (λem = 469 nm) ions due to the chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) effect. The limit of detection (LoD) values for Al3+ and Zn2+ have been determined to be 38.0 nM and 43.0 nM, respectively. The binding constants for Al3+ and Zn2+ were found to be 1.18 × 106 M-1 and 3.5 × 105 M-1, respectively. The NpSb also acted as a colorimetric sensor for Al3+ as the colour of the probe's solution turned to pale green from colourless upon Al3+ addition. The binding mechanism between NpSb and Zn2+/Al3+ was supported by the ESI-MS, Job's plot, NMR, and DFT studies. The reversibility experiments were carried out with an F- ion and EDTA with the development of corresponding logic gates. Moreover, NpSb could be applied to detect Al3+ ions in real samples such as tap water, distilled water and soil samples.

Fluorescent Turn-On Anthracene-Based Aluminum(III) Sensor for a Therapeutic Study in Alzheimer's Disease Model of Drosophila

A new anthracene-based probe (E)-N'-(1-(anthracen-9-yl)ethylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (AHB) has been efficiently synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic methods. It exhibits extremely selective and sensitive fluorometric sensing of Al3+ ions with a large enhancement in the fluorescent intensity due to the restricted photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism with a chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) effect. The AHB-Al3+ complex shows a remarkably low limit of detection at 0.498 nM. The binding mechanism has been proposed based on Job's plot, 1H NMR titration, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and density functional theory (DFT) studies. The chemosensor is reusable and reversible in the presence of ctDNA. The practical usability of the fluorosensor has been established by a test strip kit. Further, the therapeutic potential of AHB against Al3+ ion-induced tau protein toxicity has been tested in the eye of Alzheimer's disease (AD) model of Drosophila via metal chelation therapy. AHB shows great therapeutic potential with 53.3% rescue in the eye phenotype. The in vivo interaction study of AHB with Al3+ in the gut tissue of Drosophila confirms its sensing efficiency in the biological environment. A detailed comparison table included evaluates the effectiveness of AHB.

Ratiometric near-infrared upconversion fluorescence sensor for selectively detecting and imaging of Al3

Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probes provide extremely sensitive Al³⁺ detection for human health purposes. This research develops novel Al³⁺ response molecules (HCMPA) and NIR upconversion fluorescent nanocarriers (UCNPs), which respond to Al³⁺ through ratio NIR fluorescence. UCNPs improve photobleaching and visible light lack in specific HCMPA probes. Additionally, UCNPs are capable of ratio response, which will further enhance signal accuracy. The NIR ratiometric fluorescence sensing system has been successfully used to detect Al³⁺ within the range 0.1-1000 nM with an accuracy limit of 0.06 nM. Alternatively, a NIR ratiometric fluorescence sensing system integrated with a specific molecule can image Al³⁺ within cells. This study demonstrates that a NIR fluorescent probe is an effective and highly stable method of measuring Al³⁺ in cells.

A review of the biological effects of Myrtus communis

The World Health Organization stated that 1.6 million deaths worldwide were caused by contact with chemicals and toxins in 2019. In the same year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that natural toxins caused 3960 deaths. Myrtus communis, also known as common Myrtle, is a flowering plant native to the Mediterranean region. Myrtle has been traditionally used to treat diarrhea, inflammation, bleeding, headache, pulmonary and skin diseases. This review was performed to assess Myrtle's protective and therapeutic efficacy against various chemical, natural, and radiational noxious. Multiple databases such as PubMed, Web of Sciences, and Scopus were investigated without publication time limitation. Recent studies have demonstrated its potential as a protective agent against both natural and chemical toxins. One of Myrtle's most significant protective properties is its high antioxidant content. Studies have shown that the antioxidant properties of Myrtle can protect against harmful substances such as heavy metals, pesticides, and other environmental toxins. Additionally, Myrtle has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the damage caused by long-term exposure to toxins. The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of Myrtle have also proven effective in alleviating gastrointestinal conditions such as gastric ulcers.

Recent developments in the creation of a single molecular sensing tool for ternary iron (III), chromium (III), aluminium (III) ionic species: A review

Rational design of a molecular sensing tool is an important topic in molecular recognition, signalling, and optoelectronics that has piqued the interest of chemists, biologists, and environmental scientists. Approximately 150 years have passed since the beginning of the fluorescent chemosensor sector. Due to the paramagnetic properties of Cr3+ and Al3+ , it is tough to prepare a photoluminescence plug-in detector. Most dye-based Al3+ sensors must be utilized in organic or mixed solvents for robust hydration of Al3+ in water. The sophisticated molecular design of sensors, conversely, allows for the detection of these metal ions in aqueous medium. The design of chemosensors using various fluorophores and their mechanisms of action have been thoroughly discussed. A literature survey covering the design of chemosensors and their mechanisms of action have been thoroughly discussed covering the period 2010-2022 and that was carried out including innovative and exemplary activities from numerous groups throughout the world that have significantly contributed to this sector. The most important advantages of these probes are their aqueous solubility and quick response with outstanding selectivity and sensitivity for temporal distribution with high fidelity of metals in living cells.

Method for highly selective, ultrasensitive fluorimetric detection of Cu2+ and Al3+ by Schiff bases containing o-phenylenediamine and o-aminophenol

Schiff base probes (1 and 2) made from o-phenylenediamine and o-aminophenol were appeared as highly selective fluorimetric chemosensor of Cu²⁺ and Al³⁺ ions respectively. Strong fluorescence emission of probe 1 at 415 nm (excitation at 350 nm) was instantly turned off on addition of Cu²⁺. Very weak fluorescence of probe 2 at 506 nm (excitation at 400 nm) was immediately turned on specifically by Al³⁺. Job's plot and ESI-MS results suggested 1:1 molar stoichiometric ratio of metal ion and probe in their respective complexes. Probe 1 and 2 had demonstrated very low detection limit (9.9 and 2.5 nM respectively). Binding of Cu²⁺ with probe 1 was found chemically reversible on addition of EDTA, while complexation between Al³⁺ and probe 2 was not reversible. On the basis of density functional theory (DFT) and spectroscopic results, probable mode of sensing of the metal ions by the probes were proposed. Quenching of the fluorescence of probe 1 by Cu²⁺ was attributed to the extensive transfer of charge from the probe molecule to paramagnetic copper ion. Whereas, in the Al³⁺-complex of probe 2, photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process from the imine nitrogen to salicylaldehyde moiety was restricted and thereby the weak emission intensity of probe 2 was enhanced significantly. Effective pH range of sensing the metal ions by probe 1 and 2 were 4 to 8 and 6 to 10 respectively. Probe 1 was also applied in the design of a logic gate for Cu²⁺ detection. Moreover, probe 1 and 2 was also used in water sample analysis for quantitative estimation of Cu²⁺ and Al³⁺ respectively.

Anti-Alzheimer Potential of a New (+)-Pinitol Glycoside Isolated from Tamarindus indica Pulp: In Vivo and In Silico Evaluations

Tamarindus indica Linn (tamarind, F. Leguminosae) is one of the most widely consumed edible fruits in the world. Phytochemical investigation of tamarind pulp n-butanol fraction yielded one new (+)-pinitol glycoside compound 1 (25% w/w), and 1D, 2D NMR, and HRESIMS investigation were used to confirm the new compound's structure. (+)-Pinitol glycoside showed anti-Alzheimer potential that was confirmed in prophylactic and treatment groups by decreasing time for the T-maze test; decreased TAO, brain and serum AChE, MDA, tau protein levels, and β amyloid peptide protein levels; and increasing GPX, SOD levels, and in vivo regression of the neurodegenerative features of Alzheimer's dementia in an aluminum-intoxicated rat model. The reported molecular targets for human Alzheimer's disease were then used in a network pharmacology investigation to examine their complex interactions and identify the key targets in the disease pathogenesis. An in silico-based analysis (molecular docking, binding free energy calculation (ΔG_Binding), and molecular dynamics simulation) was performed to identify the potential targets for compound 1. The findings of this study may lead to the development of dietary supplements for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

High aluminum content in bone of marine mammals and its relation with source levels and origin

Although aluminum is widely distributed in the earth's crust, its environmental availability and wildlife assimilation rates are only partially known. Here we analyze aluminum concentrations in bone from 10 species of marine mammals inhabiting 3 geographic areas subject to different aluminum inputs: the Río de la Plata estuary (Uruguay), the coastal waters of Mauritania and the Galapagos archipelago (Ecuador). Overall, concentrations were unusually high as compared to those of terrestrial animals, with lowest concentrations in the Galapagos archipelago, then the Río de la Plata estuary and finally Mauritania. The aluminum source varied between regions, prevailing anthropogenic sources in the Río de la Plata Estuary and natural sources (wind-blown dust) in Mauritanian waters. The type of source determined contamination levels: anthropogenic sources were most significant for coastal species and showed a decline with distance of habitat from shoreline, while natural sources had a higher influence on open waters because of the dearth of biogenic silica that eliminates aluminum from the water column. Since aluminum remains in bone for several decades, marine mammal bone reflects historical levels of aluminum and therefore is a good bioindicator of the aluminum concentration of the marine environment.

Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx protect against oxidative stress and aluminium chloride-induced neurotoxicity in the brain of experimental rats

We evaluated the antioxidant and neuroprotective potentials of extracts of Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx in Wistar albino male rats injected intraperitoneally with aluminium chloride at a dose of 7 mg/kg/day. Phytochemical screening of H. sabdariffa calyx show that coumarin glycosides and steroid were absent after drying at 50 ^oC. At 30 ^oC, there were significant (p < 0.05) highest amounts of phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannin, and saponin. The extracts showed significantly (p < 0.05) high dose-dependent antioxidant activities. MDA significantly (p < 0.05) increased, while GSH, GPX, SOD, CAT activities significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in the brain of the experimental rats induced with AlCl₃, while treatment with the extracts reversed these effects to a relatively normal level. At doses of 500 and 1000 mg/kg body weight, the extracts of the calyx dried at 30 ^oC exhibited the highest capacity to increase the activities of GSH and GPx. Also, AlCl₃ caused significant increases (p < 0.05) in the percentage inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase activities, and a significantly (p < 0.05) lower protein levels in the brain of the test rats, while treatment with the extracts, at low and high doses, significantly (p < 0.05) reversed these effects in the rat brain to near normal.H. sabdariffa exhibited a good potential to protect against oxidative stress and neurotoxicity.

Aluminum as a Possible Cause Toward Dyslipidemia

Aluminum, the third most abundant metal present in the earth's crust, is present almost in all daily commodities we use, and exposure to it is unavoidable. The interference of aluminum with various biochemical reactions in the body leads to detrimental health effects, out of which aluminum-induced neurodegeneration is widely studied. However, the effect of aluminum in causing dyslipidemia cannot be neglected. Dyslipidemia is a global health problem, which commences to the cosmic of non-communicable diseases. The interference of aluminum with various iron-dependent enzymatic activities in the tri-carboxylic acid cycle and electron transport chain results in decreased production of mitochondrial adenosine tri-phosphate. This ultimately contributes to oxidative stress and iron-mediated lipid peroxidation. This mitochondrial dysfunction along with modulation of α-ketoglutarate and L-carnitine perturbs lipid metabolism, leading to the atypical accumulation of lipids and dyslipidemia. Respiratory chain disruption because of the accumulation of reduced nicotinamide adenine di-nucleotide as a consequence of oxidative stress and the stimulatory effect of aluminum exposure on glycolysis causes many health issues including fat accumulation, obesity, and other hepatic disorders. One major factor contributing to dyslipidemia and enhanced pro-inflammatory responses is estrogen. Aluminum, being a metalloestrogen, modulates estrogen receptors, and in this world of industrialization and urbanization, we could corner down to metals, particularly aluminum, in the development of dyslipidemia. As per PRISMA guidelines, we did a literature search in four medical databases to give a holistic view of the possible link between aluminum exposure and various biochemical events leading to dyslipidemia.

Taurine and deferiprone against Al-linked apoptosis in rat hippocampus

BACKGROUND

Aluminium (Al) overload has toxic effects on multiple organ systems, especially the nervous system. Al accumulation in the brain, especially the hippocampus, is an important factor contributing to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Deferiprone (DFP), a metal chelator, is used as a potential treatment for AD. In this study, we investigated the combined effect of taurine and DFP on Al chelation and hippocampal apoptosis in Al-exposed rats, as well as the underlying mechanisms of these effects to explore a possible therapy for AD.

METHODS

Male Wistar rats were divided into seven groups: negative control group (administered saline), Al-exposure group (administered AlCl₃ and saline), and five experimental groups (administered AlCl₃ and taurine, varying doses of DFP, or taurine with varying doses of DFP). After 8 weeks of treatment, the rats were sacrificed, and the terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferase (TDT)-mediated dUTP-digoxigenin nick end labelling (TUNEL) assay was used to detect hippocampal apoptotic cells. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to assess the expression of the Bcl2 and Bax genes, and a western blotting assay was used to evaluate BCL2, BAX, and cleaved caspase-3 levels.

RESULTS

Compared to the negative control group, the number of apoptotic cells in the hippocampus increased, Bcl2 expression significantly decreased, and BAX and cleaved caspase-3 levels increased in the Al-exposure group. The combination of taurine and DFP exerted a protective effect by inhibiting hippocampal cell apoptosis through the BCL2, BAX, and caspase-3 signalling pathways. Compared with the taurine-administered group, the group administered taurine with DFP showed a significantly increased Bcl2 and decreased Bax expression.

CONCLUSION

The combination of taurine and DFP is a potential candidate for the treatment of AD induced by Al exposure.

FDTD Simulations for Rhodium and Platinum Nanoparticles for UV Plasmonics

The article describes the results of finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) mathematical modeling of electromagnetic fields distortion near the surfaces of two transition metals: rhodium (Rh) and platinum (Pt) on glass (SiO₂) substrates. Results were compared with calculated optical properties of classical SERS generating metals (Au and Ag). We have performed FDTD-based theoretical calculations for UV SERS-active nanoparticles (NPs) and structures based on hemispheres of Rh and Pt and planar surfaces, consisting of single NPs with varied gaps between them. The results have been compared with gold stars, silver spheres and hexagons. The prospects of the theoretical approach for single NPs and planar surfaces modeling to evaluate optimal field amplification and light scattering parameters have been shown. The presented approach could be applied as a basis for performing the methods of controlled synthesis for LPSR tunable colloidal and planar metal-based biocompatible optical sensors for UV and deep-UV plasmonics. The difference between UV-plasmonic NPs and plasmonics in a visible range has been evaluated.

Herd Health Troubles Potentially Related to Aluminium Grass Silage Content in Dairy Cows

In ruminants, the main documented clinical manifestation of aluminium (Al) intoxication is similar to grass tetany. In a 50 dairy cow Belgian herd, the farmer reported excessive uterine bleeding at calving and decreased milk production. Dairy cows received a mixed ration (MR) with high Al concentration (453 ppm/kg of dry matter (DM)). Various analyses were sampled from 10 sick cows and compared with 10 healthy cows (from another herd). Sick cows presented anaemia and marginal hypozincaemia and 6/10 showed subclinical ketosis. Their urine analysis revealed hypomagnesaemia and a high Al/creatinine ratio. It was advised to determine soil pH, add salts to the ration to chelate the Al and support cows with mineral supplements and propylene glycol. A visit was carried out 2 years later and highlighted an improvement in the situation, but all examined animals presented subclinical ketosis. Grass silage Al content remained high (700 ppm/kg DM), as did butyric acid concentration (11.22 g/kg DM). Al could be incriminated at different stages: micronutrient deficiencies, anaemia and negative energy balance. However, Al was probably not the only culprit. This case report is a concern for future years in these areas due to droughts, scarcity of forage and an increase in contaminated soil ingestion.

Amelioration of AlCl3-induced Memory Loss in the Rats by an Aqueous Extract of Guduchi, a Medhya Rasayana

Background

In ayurvedic practice, the Guduchi ( Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers) stem is used as a Medhya drug for its beneficial effects on memory improvement.

Objectives

The current study was planned to explore the Medhya properties of the Guduchi stem extract by observing its ameliorating effect on AlCl3-induced neurotoxicity in rats that acted as a chronic model of memory loss.

Materials and Methods

The aqueous extract of the Guduchi stem was prepared per the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India and administered to the AlCl3-treated Wistar rats for 42 days. The biochemical assessment of the brain tissues of the treated animals was done by the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition assay, protein expression, and oxidative stress assays, namely lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase assay. The neurobehavioral assessment was done using the elevated plus maze (EPM) test.

Results

The EPM test revealed that treatment with Guduchi extract showed marked improvement of memory status in rats along with reduced oxidative stress, and a marked modulation of the AChE inhibition and expression of AChE tubulin proteins.

Conclusion

The results substantiate the Medhya properties of the Guduchi. Detailed investigations are required to be carried out to explore the precise mechanism of the neuroprotective action of the Guduchi stem extract against the AlCl3-induced neurotoxicity in rats.

'AIE + ESIPT' Active 2-hydroxy-naphthalene Hydrazone for the Fluorescence Turn-on Sensing of Al3

The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behaviour of an easy-to-prepare Schiff base 2-hydroxy-naphthalene hydrazone (L) was explored in mixed DMSO/HEPES medium by selecting DMSO as a good solvent, whereas HEPES buffer (H₂O, 10 mM, pH 7.4) as a poor solvent. The weakly fluorescent L in pure DMSO showed a fluorescence enhancement at 532 nm upon increasing the fraction of HEPES above 70% because of the self-aggregation of L and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. The AIE luminogen (AIEgen) L was applied for the sensing of metal ions in HEPES buffer (5% DMSO, 10 mM, pH 7.4). Among the fourteen different metal ions (Cu²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Mn²⁺, Mg²⁺, Fe³⁺, Fe²⁺, Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺, Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺, Al³⁺, Cr³⁺), AIEgen L showed a selective fluorescence enhancement at 435 nm in the presence of Al³⁺ without disturbing the fluorescence intensity at 532 nm due to the chelation-enhanced fluorescence effect (CHEF). The detection limit of 20 nM was estimated by performing the fluorescence titration of AIEgen L with Al³⁺. The reversibility of the Al³⁺ selective AIEgen L was demonstrated by adding a strong chelating agent EDTA. Finally, the practical utility of AIEgen L was validated by quantifying Al³⁺ in river and tap water samples.

Metal-organic frameworks: A promising option for the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease

Beta-amyloid (Aβ) peptide is one of the main characteristic biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previous clinical investigations have proposed that unusual concentrations of this biomarker in cerebrospinal fluid, blood, and brain tissue are closely associated with the AD progression. Therefore, the critical point of early diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of AD is to monitor the levels of Aβ. In view of the potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for diagnosing and treating the AD, much attention has been focused in recent years. This review discusses the latest advances in the applications of MOFs for the early diagnosis of AD via fluorescence and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection of AD biomarkers, fluorescence detection of the main metal ions in the brain (Zn²⁺, Cu²⁺, Mn²⁺, Fe³⁺, and Al³⁺) in addition to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the Aβ plaques. The current challenges and future strategies for translating the in vitro applications of MOFs into in vivo diagnosis of the AD are discussed.

Maternal and Newborn Blood Aluminum Levels and Neurodevelopment of Infants: Is there a Need for Concern?

Aluminum is a neurotoxic element that enters the human body due to its widespread usage in daily life. It has the potential to affect the neurological development of the fetus and infant adversely. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between maternal and umbilical cord serum aluminum level and infant neurodevelopment. Over a period of March 2018 to September 2019, we conducted a prospective cohort study; 173 Mother-new-born pairs were enrolled. Aluminum levels were measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). The correlation with Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID) -3rd edition score and maternal and cord serum aluminum were assessed via linear regression model. The mean concentration of maternal and cord serum aluminum was 2.58 ± 1.14 µg/dL and 1.44 ± 0.62 µg/dL, respectively. There was a significant correlation in aluminum level between maternal and umbilical cord serum (Pearson's r = 0.591, p < 0.000). There is no significant correlation between maternal and serum aluminum level, and BSID-3rd edition (cognitive, motor, language, and social-emotion) score at the average age of 6.5 months. In conclusion, maternal and cord serum aluminum levels were significantly correlated but did not correlate with infant neurodevelopment. Thus, low serum aluminum concentration and their association with child neurodevelopment deserve further investigation longitudinally in a large cohort.

Comparative study of aluminum speciation on brain-type creatine kinase: Enzyme kinetic, molecular docking, cellular experiment, and mouse model study

Brain-type Creatine kinase (CK-BB), which has a high affinity for Aluminum (Al), and its abnormality is closely related to neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, the comparative effect of Al speciation on the bioactivity of CK-BB has been studied by the inhibition kinetics method, molecular docking, cellular experiment, and mouse model study. Results showed that the half-inhibitory concentration of AlCl₃ was 0.67 mM, while Al(mal)₃ was 3.81 mM. Fluorescence spectra showed that Al(mal)₃ had a more substantial effect on the endogenous fluorescence of CK-BB than AlCl₃. Molecular docking showed that AlCl₃ was closer to the active site of CK-BB. C6 cells were used to explore the enzyme activity and intracellular distribution of CK-BB by AlCl₃ or Al(mal)₃. AlCl₃ treatment may directly affect CK-BB activity and cause insufficient local ATP supply in cells which affected the formation of F-actin and cell morphology. The change in the hydrophobicity of CK-BB induced by Al(mal)₃ affected the movement of CK-BB, which subsequently activated thecytochrome C (Cyt C)/Caspase 9/Caspase 3 pathway. Similar results have been found in vivo experiments. This study demonstrated that interaction between Al and CK-BB might be related to the process of Al-induced energy metabolism disorders, in which the Al speciation revealed differentiated toxicity mechanisms.

An Acid-triggered Reactive and Enhanced Fluorescent Probe for Selective Detection of Al3+/H+ and its Application in Real Water Samples and Living Cells

A reactive fluorescent "turn-on" probe (di-PIP) with imine-linked dual phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole luminophore have been conveniently prepared as an Al³⁺ and H⁺ dual functional receptor. di-PIP displayed high selectivity and sensitivity towards Al³⁺ ion in DMF/HEPES accompanied by fluorescence blue-shift and a good linear relationship as well as a low detection limit of 30.5 nmol·L^-1, which can root from the synergetic functions of the decomposition reaction of di-PIP promoted by acidic Al³⁺ and the coordination effect between decomposition product and Al³⁺. Intriguingly, it was found that hydrogen ion H⁺ can be sufficient for simulating the fluorescence enhancing of di-PIP. ¹H NMR titration and MS analyses for elucidation of the intermediate structure further revealed that the acid-triggered decomposition reaction resulted in the rapid, and sensitive sensing to Al³⁺ and H⁺. In addition, the probe di-PIP could be successfully applied to the detection of Al³⁺ in real water samples, and also utilized to visualize Al³⁺ and H⁺ in the living cells.

Associations between plasma metal mixture exposure and risk of hypertension: A cross-sectional study among adults in Shenzhen, China

Background

Metal exposure affects human health. Current studies mainly focus on the individual health effect of metal exposure on hypertension (HTN), and the results remain controversial. Moreover, the studies assessing overall effect of metal mixtures on hypertension risk are limited.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted by recruiting 1,546 Chinese adults who attended routine medical check-ups at the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Shenzhen. The plasma levels of 13 metals were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Multivariate logistic regression model, restricted cubic spline (RCS) model and the Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) model were applied to explore the single and combined effect of metals on the risk of HTN.

Results

A total of 642 (41.5%) participants were diagnosed with HTN. In the logistic regression model, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were 0.71 (0.52, 0.97) for cobalt, 1.40 (1.04, 1.89) for calcium, 0.66 (0.48, 0.90), and 0.60 (0.43, 0.83) for aluminum in the second and third quartile, respectively. The RCS analysis showed a V-shaped or an inverse V-shaped dose-response relationship between metals (aluminum or calcium, respectively) and the risk of HTN (P for non-linearity was 0.017 or 0.009, respectively). However, no combined effect was found between metal mixture and the risk of hypertension.

Conclusions

Plasma levels of cobalt, aluminum and calcium were found to be associated with the risk of HTN. Further studies are needed to confirm our findings and their potential mechanisms with prospective studies and experimental study designs.

The Protective and Therapeutic Anti-Alzheimer Potential of Olea europaea L. cv. Picual: An In Silico and In Vivo Study

LC-HRESIMS metabolomic profiling of Olea europaea L. cv. Picual (OEP) (Saudi Arabian olive cultivar, F. Oleacea) revealed 18 compounds. Using pharmacology networking to specify the targets of the identified compounds with a relationship to Alzheimer's disease, it was possible to identify the VEGFA, AChE, and DRD2 genes as the top correlated genes to Alzheimer's disease with 8, 8, and 6 interactions in the same order. The mechanism of action on cellular components, biological processes, and molecular functions was determined by gene enrichment analysis. A biological pathway comparison revealed 13 shared pathways between the identified genes and Alzheimer protein genes (beta-amyloid band tau proteins). The suggested extract's anti-Alzheimer potential in silico screening was confirmed through in vivo investigation in regressing the neurodegenerative features of Alzheimer's dementia in an aluminum-intoxicated rat model (protective and therapeutic effects, 100 mg/kg b.w.). In vivo results suggested that OEP extract significantly improved Alzheimer's rats, which was indicated by the crude extract's ability to improve T-maze performance; lower elevated serum levels of AChE, AB peptide, and Ph/T ratio; and normalize the reduced level of TAC during the study. The results presented in this study may provide potential dietary supplements for the management of Alzheimer's disease.

Assessment for the associations of twenty-three metal(loid)s exposures with early cardiovascular damage among Chinese urban adults with five statistical methods: Insight into assessing health effect of multipollutant exposure

The topic of cardiovascular hazards from multiple metal (loid)s exposures has attracted widespread attention. Here, we measured concentrations of twenty-three urinary metal (loid)s and mean platelet volume (MPV), an early cardiovascular damage biomarker, for 3396 Chinese adults. We aimed to comprehensively assess the associations of single metal (loid) and multiple metal (loid)s (as a mixture) with MPV by combined use of five statistical methods, including general linear models, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), weight quartile sum (WQS) regression, quantile g-computation (QGC), and adaptive elastic network regression (AENR). And based on that, we hope to provide insight into assessing the health effect of multipollutant exposure. After adjustment for potential covariates, at least three methods jointly suggested that of twenty-three metal (loid)s, iron, arsenic, and antimony were positively while aluminum, tungsten, and thallium were inversely associated with MPV. The environmental risk score of metal (loid)s construed by AENR was significantly positively associated with MPV, while the association between overall twenty-three metal (loid)s mixture and MPV was neutralized to be insignificant in QGC and BKMR. Conclusively, single metal (loid) may be inversely (iron, arsenic, and antimony) and positively (aluminum, tungsten, and thallium) associated with early cardiovascular damage, while the association of overall twenty-three metal (loid)s mixture with MPV was insignificant when concurrent exposures exist. It is crucial to select appropriate statistical methods based on study purpose and principles/characteristics of statistical methods, and combined employment of multimethod is insightfully suggested when assessing health effects of multipollutant exposure.

A new zinc-organic framework with 1D channel for constructing a ratiometric Al3+-selective sensor and four inputs INHIBIT logic gate

To develop Al³⁺ fluorescent sensor is significant because the abnormal levels of Al³⁺ in environment may pose great threat to human body. Herein, a novel metal-organic framework {Zn(Dpada)(Imdba)·H₂O}_n (Dpada = 3, 6-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl) pyridazine and Imdba = 2, 2'-iminodibenzoic acid), named Zn-MOF, has been architected with one-dimensional channel under hydrothermal conditions. Zn-MOF exhibits good thermal and solvent stability and can also keep structural integrity over the pH range of 5.0 - 9.0. Fluorescent experiments show that Zn-MOF has high selectivity and sensitivity towards Al³⁺ via ratiometric fluorescence signal changes (F_{470 nm}/F_{390 nm}) and the detection limit is evaluated to be 0.69 μM. In addition, Zn-MOF performs good recyclability in sensing of Al³⁺ with at least 5 cycles. Besides, an INHIBIT logic gate has been constructed with chemical ions (Al³⁺, Cr³⁺, Fe³⁺ and Hg²⁺) as input signals and emission ratio (F_{470 nm}/F_{390 nm}) as output signal. Significantly, Zn-MOF can be applied to tracing Al³⁺ using real water samples, presenting great potential in water quality monitoring application.

Fabrication and DFT Calculation of Amine-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework as a Turn-On Fluorescence Sensor for Fe3+ and Al3+ Ions

Due to their important role in biological systems, it is urgent to develop a material that can rapidly and sensitively detect the concentration of Fe³⁺ and Al³⁺ ions. In this work, a brand-new Cd^II-based metal-organic framework [Cd(BTBD)₂(AIC)]_n (JXUST-18, BTBD = 4,7-bis(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and H₂AIC = 5-aminoisophthalic acid) with a 4-connected sql topology was designed and synthesized. The symmetrical Cd^II centers are linked by AIC^2- ligands with μ₃-η¹:η¹:η¹:η¹ coordination mode to form a [Cd₂(COO)₂] secondary building unit (SBU). The contiguous SBUs are further connected by BTBD ligands to form a two-dimensional (2D) layer structure. JXUST-18 can remain stable in aqueous solutions with pH values of 3-12 or in boiling water. Luminescent experiments suggest that JXUST-18 displays more than eightfold fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Fe³⁺ and Al³⁺ ions, and the detection limits for Fe³⁺ and Al³⁺ ions are 0.196 and 0.184 μM, respectively. Furthermore, the change in luminescence color is uncomplicatedly distinguishable with the naked eye under ultraviolet light at 365 nm. In addition, a series of devices based on JXUST-18 including fluorescence test strips, lamp beads, and composite films were developed to detect metal ions via visual changes in luminescence color. Significantly, JXUST-18 is a rare MOF-based turn-on fluorescence sensor for the detection of Fe³⁺ ions. The theoretical calculation suggests that the complexation of Fe³⁺/Al³⁺ ions and the -NH₂ group contributes to fluorescence enhancement.

A julolidine-chalcone-based fluorescent probe for detection of Al3+ in real water sample and cell imaging

A fluorescent probe 1 based on julolidine-chalcone derivative, which can specifically recognize aluminum ion with high selectivity and anti-interference, was developed. Probe 1 has good fluorescence stability and can detect Al³⁺ with turn-on fluorescence in a wide pH range of 4.0-9.0. The probe has good repeatability for the detection of Al³⁺ and fluorescence turn-on and off can be repeated with the alternate Al³⁺ and EDTA. The sensing mechanism is speculated that Al³⁺ will coordinate with hydroxyl oxygen and carbonyl oxygen on the probe through in situ ¹H NMR and HRMS combing with Job's plot. The probe can also detect Al³⁺ in actual water samples and applied to monitor Al³⁺ in biological system.

Toxic Effects of Industrial Flocculants Addition on Bioconversion of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (Hermetia illucens L.)

The black soldier fly (BSF) is a saprophagous insect that has been applied to organic waste management while providing high-quality insect protein. Flocculants are widely present in organic wastes that could be treated by black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), such as food wastes, municipal sludge, and cyanobacteria sludge. This study investigated the effect of flocculants on bioconversion of BSFL. The results showed that the addition of flocculant affected the bioconversion efficiency and nutritional composition of BSFL. The relative abundance of bacterial genera related to lipid metabolism decreased with increasing flocculant concentrations while disease-related taxa increased in relative abundance. This study could serve as a reference for related research and applications in the future.

Abstract

Black soldier fly is a saprophagous insect that has been widely reported in recent years due to its excellent performance in bioremediation. Due to the widespread presence of flocculants in the organic waste treated by black soldier fly larvae, this study aimed to evaluate the potential impacts and risks of flocculant addition (a combination of poly aluminum chloride and polyacrylamide with the ratio of 50:1). Results showed that the growth and weight of BSFL in the high-exposure groups (≥200 mg/L) were inhibited. The bioaccumulation of aluminum (Al) in larvae was estimated, and the proportions of different Al forms in the frass from high to low were the residual state (41.38% to 67.92%), water-soluble state (16.88% to 37.03%), acid-soluble state (8.45% to 18.72%), and alkali-soluble state (3.38% to 5.14%). The relative abundance of bacterial genera related to lipid metabolism decreased with increasing flocculant concentrations while disease-related taxa increased in relative abundance. The results serve as a reference for subsequent research and application of the treatment of flocculant-contaminated waste by BSFL.

Short-chain aldehydes increase aluminum retention and sensitivity by enhancing cell wall polysaccharide contents and pectin demethylation in wheat seedlings

Upon environmental stimuli, aldehydes are generated downstream of reactive oxygen species and thereby contribute to severe cell damage. In this study, using two wheat genotypes differing in aluminum (Al) tolerance, we investigated the effects of lipid peroxidation-derived aldehydes on cell wall composition and subsequent Al-binding capacities. The spatial accumulation of Al along wheat roots was found to the generation of reactive aldehydes, which are highly localized to the apical regions of roots. Elimination of aldehydes by carnosine significantly reduced Al contents in root tips, with a concomitant alleviation of root growth inhibition. In contrast, root growth and Al accumulation were exacerbated by application of the short-chain aldehyde (E)-2-hexenal. We further confirmed that cell wall binding capacity, rather than malate efflux or pH alteration strategies, is associated with the aldehyde-induced accumulation of Al. Scavenging of lipid-derived aldehydes reduced Al accumulation in the pectin and hemicellulose 1 (HC1) fractions of root cell walls, whereas exposure to (E)-2-hexenal promoted a further accumulation of Al, particularly in the cell wall HC1 fraction of the Al-sensitive genotype. Different strategies were introduced by pectin and HC1 to accumulate Al in response to aldehydes in wheat roots. Accumulation in pectin is based on a reduction of methylation levels in response to elevated pectin methylesterase activity and gene expression, whereas that in HC1 is associated with an increase in polysaccharide contents. These findings indicate that aldehydes exacerbate Al phytotoxicity by enhancing Al retention in cell wall polysaccharides.

A Ratiometric Afterglow Response of Aluminium Ions in Methanol-Water

An afterglow is beneficial as an emission signal in the field of displays and imaging probes. Here, boronic acid-appended and spirolactam ring-containing rhodamine dye 1 was synthesized and grafted onto the surface of room-temperature phosphorescence-active boronate nanoparticles (BPs), composed of polymeric 3-benzo-2,4,8,10-tetraoxa-3,9-diboraspiro[5.5]undecane. The resultant ensemble, 1@BP, exhibited a greenish afterglow. However, the addition of Al³⁺ into the dispersion solution with 1@BP led to a change in the afterglow to grass green as a result of Förster-type energy transfer from the phosphorescent BP to the Al³⁺ -interacting rhodamine dye 1 on the surface. Based on the ratio of the two emission intensities, a linear response in the concentration range of 3.8-15.2 μM was observed, with a detection limit of 4.2 μM for Al³⁺ . A metal ion-dependent discernable color in afterglow was observed on a 1@BP-coated filter paper, which would be useful for not only film-based afterglow chemosensors but also encryption application.

Dual-emitting metal-organic frameworks for ratiometric fluorescence detection of fluoride and Al3+ in sequence

Fluoride (F^-) and Al³⁺ are two common ions existing in drinking water and natural water bodies. Excessive intake of F^- can lead to serious health issues such as fluorosis and bone diseases while accumulated consumption of Al³⁺ may cause neurotoxicity-based diseases. Developing a fast, reliable, and sensitive sensor for visually detecting both F^- and Al³⁺ is of great significance. In the present work, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor was constructed by incorporating rhodamine B (RhB) in situ into a zirconium-based metal-organic framework, UiO-66-NH₂. The obtained nanocomposite UiO-66-NH₂@RhB exhibited similar octahedral structure to UiO-66-NH₂ with high BET surface area, and showed two emission peaks at 450 nm and 585 nm. The blue fluorescence from UiO-66-NH₂ was enhanced by the addition of F^- while subsequent Al³⁺ addition diminished the increased fluorescence intensity, and the red emission from RhB as the reference remained unchangeable to improve the detection precision. Under optimal conditions, detection of limits as low as 1.55 μM for F^- and 0.54 μM for Al³⁺ in aqueous solution were achieved with good selectivity. High recoveries in drinking water samples were also acquired, showing potential applications of this ratiometric fluorescence sensor for practical evaluation of F^- and Al³⁺.
