Recent Advances in the Selective Oxidation of Alkyl C-H Bonds Catalyzed by Iron Coordination Complexes

Study of Cyclohexane and Methylcyclohexane Functionalization Promoted by Manganese(III) Compounds

Alkane functionalization using safe and low-energy processes is of great interest to industry and academia. Aiming to contribute to the process of saturated hydrocarbon functionalization, we have studied a set of three manganese(III) complexes as catalysts for promoting the oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons (cyclohexane and methylcyclohexane) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide or trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA). The mononuclear manganese(III) compounds were prepared using the ligands H2LMet4 (6,6’-((1,4-diazepane-1,4-diyl)bis(methylene))bis(2,4-dimethylphenol), H2salen (2,2’-((1E,1’E)-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(azaneylylidene))bis(methaneylylidene))diphenol) and H2salan (2,2’-((ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanediyl))bis(methylene))diphenol). The catalytic processes were carried out in acetonitrile at 25 and 50 °C for 24 h. The increase in the temperature was important to get a better conversion. The compounds did not promote cyclohexane oxidation in the presence of H2O2. However, they were active in the presence of TCCA, employing a ratio of 1000:333:1 equivalents of the substrate:TCCA:catalyst. The best catalytic activity was shown by the compound [Mn(salen)Cl], reaching conversions of 14.5 ± 0.3% (25 °C) and 26.3 ± 1.1% (50 °C) (yield for chlorocyclohexane) and up to 12.1 ± 0.5% (25 °C) and 29.8 ± 2.2% (50 °C) (total yield for the mixture of the products 1-chloro-4-methylcyclohexane, 3-methylcyclohexene and 1-methylcyclohexene). The interaction of the catalysts with TCCA was studied using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), suggesting that the catalysts [Mn(LMet4)Cl] and [Mn(salan)Cl] act via a different mechanism from that observed for [Mn(salen)Cl].

Bio-Inspired Iron Pentadentate Complexes as Dioxygen Activators in the Oxidation of Cyclohexene and Limonene

The use of dioxygen as an oxidant in fine chemicals production is an emerging problem in chemistry for environmental and economical reasons. In acetonitrile, the [(N4Py)Fe^II]²⁺ complex, [N4Py-N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-(bis-2-pyridylmethyl)amine] in the presence of the substrate activates dioxygen for the oxygenation of cyclohexene and limonene. Cyclohexane is oxidized mainly to 2-cyclohexen-1-one, and 2-cyclohexen-1-ol, cyclohexene oxide is formed in much smaller amounts. Limonene gives as the main products limonene oxide, carvone, and carveol. Perillaldehyde and perillyl alcohol are also present in the products but to a lesser extent. The investigated system is twice as efficient as the [(bpy)₂Fe^II]²⁺/O₂/cyclohexene system and comparable to the [(bpy)₂Mn^II]²⁺/O₂/limonene system. Using cyclic voltammetry, it has been shown that, when the catalyst, dioxgen, and substrate are present simultaneously in the reaction mixture, the iron(IV) oxo adduct [(N4Py)Fe^IV=O]²⁺ is formed, which is the oxidative species. This observation is supported by DFT calculations.

The oxidation of cyclo-olefin by the S = 2 ground-state complex [FeIV(O)(TQA)(NCMe)]2

Density functional theory calculation is used to investigate the oxidation of cyclo-olefin (cyclobutene, cyclopentene, cyclohexene, cycloheptene, and cyclo-octene) by the complex [Fe^IV(O)(TQA)(NCMe)]²⁺, which has S = 2 ground state, and the effect of electronic factors and steric hindrance on reaction barriers. Our results suggest that the oxo-iron(IV) complex can oxidise C-H and C = C bonds via a single-state mechanism, and two different ways of electron transport exist. The energy barriers initially decrease with increasing substrate size, and the trend then reverses. Comparison of the energy barrier in different systems reveals that except for the reaction between [Fe^IV(O)(TQA)(NCMe)]²⁺ and cycloheptene, oxo-iron(IV) complexes prefer epoxidation to hydroxylation. However, the hydroxylated product is more stable than the corresponding epoxidated product. This result indicates that the products of epoxidation tend to decompose first. The energy barrier of hydroxylation and epoxidation originates from the balance of orbital interaction and Pauli repulsion from the equatorial ligand and protons on the approaching substrate. In this regard, we calculate the weak interaction between two fragments (oxo-iron complex and substrates) using the independent gradient model and drawn the corresponding 3D isosurface representations of reactants.

Aerobic conversion of benzylic sp3 C–H in diphenylmethanes and benzyl ethers to CO bonds under catalyst-, additive- and light-free conditions

Catalyst-, additive- and light-free aerobic conversion of benzylic C–H to CO bonds is, for the first time, reported.

Manganese complex-catalyzed oxidation and oxidative kinetic resolution of secondary alcohols by hydrogen peroxide

The highly efficient catalytic oxidation and oxidative kinetic resolution (OKR) of secondary alcohols has been achieved using a synthetic manganese catalyst with low loading and hydrogen peroxide as an environmentally benign oxidant in the presence of a small amount of sulfuric acid as an additive. The product yields were high (up to 93%) for alcohol oxidation and the enantioselectivity was excellent (>90% ee) for the OKR of secondary alcohols. Mechanistic studies revealed that alcohol oxidation occurs via hydrogen atom (H-atom) abstraction from an α-CH bond of the alcohol substrate and a two-electron process by an electrophilic Mn-oxo species. Density functional theory calculations revealed the difference in reaction energy barriers for H-atom abstraction from the α-CH bonds of R- and S-enantiomers by a chiral high-valent manganese-oxo complex, supporting the experimental result from the OKR of secondary alcohols.

Direct Selective Oxidative Functionalization of C-H Bonds with H₂O₂: Mn-Aminopyridine Complexes Challenge the Dominance of Non-Heme Fe Catalysts

Non-heme iron(II) complexes are widespread synthetic enzyme models, capable of conducting selective C–H oxidation with H₂O₂ in the presence of carboxylic acid additives. In the last years, structurally similar manganese(II) complexes have been shown to catalyze C–H oxidation with similarly high selectivity, and with much higher efficiency. In this mini-review, recent catalytic and mechanistic data on the selective C–H oxygenations with H₂O₂ in the presence of manganese complexes are overviewed. A distinctive feature of catalyst systems of the type Mn complex/H₂O₂/carboxylic is the existence of two alternative reaction pathways (as found for the oxidation of cumenes), one leading to the formation of alcohol, and the other to ester. The mechanisms of formation of the alcohol and the ester are briefly discussed.

Highly selective aerobic oxidation of alkyl arenes and alcohols: cobalt supported on natural hydroxyapatite nanocrystals

Cobalt was successfully immobilized on natural hydroxyapatite nanocrystals which was obtained from cow bones (Co–NHAp). NHAp as the support enhanced both catalytic activity and selectivity in aerobic oxidation of alkyl arenes and alcohols.
