Abstract
Signal amplification by reversible exchange (SABRE) is shown to allow access to strongly enhanced 1H NMR signals in a range of substrates in aqueous media. To achieve this outcome, phase‐transfer catalysis is exploited, which leads to less than 1.5×10−6 mol dm−3 of the iridium catalyst in the aqueous phase. These observations reflect a compelling route to produce a saline‐based hyperpolarized bolus in just a few seconds for subsequent in vivo MRI monitoring. The new process has been called catalyst separated hyperpolarization through signal amplification by reversible exchange or CASH‐SABRE. We illustrate this method for the substrates pyrazine, 5‐methylpyrimidine, 4,6‐d2‐methyl nicotinate, 4,6‐d2‐nicotinamide and pyridazine achieving 1H signal gains of approximately 790‐, 340‐, 3000‐, 260‐ and 380‐fold per proton at 9.4 T at the time point at which phase separation is complete.

Abstract
A series of complexes of 2,3,5,6,8,9,11,12-octahydro-1,4,7,10,13-benzopentaoxacyclopentadecine (benzo-15-crown-5) with sodium halides was synthesized in acetonitrile. The effect of anion on the stability and spectral properties of complexes of benzo-15-crown-5 with sodium halides was investigated. The synthesis of complexes of sodium fluoride and sodium chloride are reported for the first time. Chloroform was used as solvent to study the assembly in solution state by 1H and 13C NMR techniques. Single crystal diffraction studies on the easily crystallizable bromide complex confirmed 1:1 stoichiometry of the complex. IR and Raman studies provided valuable evidence for a water molecule shared between the crown encapsulated cation and the counter ion to give a solvent shared ion pair (SSIP). The fluorescence spectra of the complexes were obtained in chloroform by excitation at 270nm to study the effect of complexation on the fluorescent properties of benzo-15-crown-5.

Abstract
Quaternary ammonium salts are widely used in consumer products and industrial processes, where their instability at elevated temperatures limits their range of applications. In this work, the thermal behavior of a new class of quaternary ammonium salts was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. These salts contain a sulfur atom in each chain at the fourth position from the central nitrogen and are thus termed thiaquats. The temperatures at which these salts melt and thermally degrade were determined, and enthalpies and entropies of fusion were evaluated. Their melting points increase with chain lengths, in contrast to the behavior of traditional quaternary ammonium salts. Furthermore, they exhibit enthalpies and entropies of fusion significantly lower than corresponding tetraalkyl analogues. These trends provide physical insight into the molecular-level behavior of these salts, suggesting that they do not fully dissociate upon melting. The thiaquats also exhibit thermal stability to markedly higher temperatures than traditional quaternary ammonium bromides, a phenomenon that can be explained in by strong pairing between the quaternary cation and bromide anion, which inhibits possible decomposition mechanisms. This enhanced thermal stability may enable applications of these salts in processes where traditional salts are not viable, such as phase-transfer-catalyzed systems performed at elevated temperatures.

Abstract
Fluorous derivatives of dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether were prepared, and then successfully applied in representative solid-liquid phase transfer catalysis reactions, which were performed in standard organic solvents, such as chlorobenzene and toluene, as well as in fluorous solvents, such as perfluoro-1,3-dimethylcyclohexane. It was clearly shown that properly designed fluoroponytailed crown ethers could promote the disintegration of the crystal lattice of alkali salts, and transfer anions from the solid surface into an apolar, non-coordinating perfluorocarbon phase, for phase transfer catalysis reactions in organic synthesis. Furthermore, 3,5-bis(perfluorooctyl)benzyl bromide and triethylamine were reacted under mild conditions to provide an analogue of the versatile phase transfer catalyst, benzyltriethylammonium chloride, containing two fluoroponytails. This fluoroponytailed quaternary ammonium salt was also successfully employed as a catalyst in a variety of organic reactions conducted under solid-liquid phase transfer catalysis conditions, without a perfluorocarbon phase. Thus, being both hydrophobic and lipophobic, fluorous crown ethers and ammonium salts, could be rapidly recovered in quantitative yields, and reused without loss of activity, over several reaction cycles.

Abstract
A safe and simple method for methyl S-arylmercapturate synthesis is described. Thirteen such compounds, to be used afterwards in metabolism studies, have been obtained with yields ranging from 71 to 99.6%. These compounds were obtained using a sulfa-Michael addition and synthesized by adding the corresponding thiophenols to a mixture composed of methyl 2-acetamidoacrylate (MAA), potassium carbonate and a phase transfer catalyst, Aliquat 336. MAA, the initial synthon, was itself isolated in quasi quantitative yield following a fully described synthesis.

Abstract
The vibrational, Raman, and IR, spectra of the five 12-crown-4 (12c4) complexes with Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+ alkali metal cations were measured. Except for a small shift of the position of some bands in the vibrational spectra of the Li+ complex, the vibrational spectra of the five complexes are so similar that it is concluded that the five complexes exist in the same conformation. B3LYP/6-31+G* force fields were calculated for six of the eight predicted conformations in a previous report (J. Phys. Chem. A 2005, 109, 8041) of the 12c4-Li+, Na+, and K+ complexes that are of symmetries higher than the C1 symmetry. These six conformations, in energy order, are of C4, Cs, Cs, C(2v), C(2v), and Cs symmetries. Comparison between the experimental and calculated vibrational frequencies assuming any of the above-mentioned six conformations shows that the five complexes exist in the C4 conformation. This agrees with the fact that the five alkali metal cations are larger than the 12c4 ring cavity. The B3LYP/6-31+G* force fields of the C4 conformation of the Li+, Na+ and K+ complexes were scaled using a set of eight scale factors and the scale factors were varied so as to minimize the difference between the calculated and experimental vibrational frequencies. The root-mean-square (rms) deviations of the calculated frequencies from the experimental frequencies were 7.7, 5.6, and 5.1 cm(-1) for the Li+, Na+, and K+ complexes, respectively. To account for the earlier results of the Li+ complex that the Cs conformation is more stable than the C4 conformation by 0.16 kcal/mol at the MP2/6-31+G* level, optimized geometries of the complex were calculated for the C4 and Cs conformations at the MP2/6-311++G** level. The C4 conformation was calculated to be more stable than the Cs conformation by 0.13 kcal/mol.

Abstract
The nucleophilic displacement on n-octylmesylate (n-C(8)H(17)OSO(2)CH(3), 1) with four different anions (I(-), Br(-), N(3)(-), and SCN(-)) is investigated under liquid-supercritical phase-transfer catalysis (LSc-PTC) conditions, i.e. in a biphase system of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) and water, in the presence of both silica supported and conventional onium salts. The CO(2) pressure greatly affects the concentration of 1 in the sc-phase and plays a major role on its conversion. For example, at 50 degrees C and with a supported PT-catalyst, the conversion of 1 into n-octyl iodide drops by a factor of 5 as the CO(2) pressure is increased from 80 to 150 bar, while in the same pressure range, the solubility of n-octylmesylate in scCO(2) shows a 6-fold increase, indicating that the reagent is desorbed from the catalyst. Under LSc-PTC conditions, pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constants, evaluated for the investigated reactions, show that the performance of scCO(2) as a PTC solvent and the relative nucleophilicity order of the anions (N(3)(-) > I(-) > or = Br(-) > SCN(-)) are comparable to those of toluene and n-heptane. The behavior of conventional phosphonium salts in the scCO(2)/H(2)O biphase system suggests that the reaction may take place either within small droplets of PT-catalyst containing water or in a separate third liquid phase of the PT-catalyst itself.
