Distribution of Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Aquatic Ecosystems and Their Impacts on Aquatic Organisms, with Emphasis on Microalgae

Detrimental consequences of micropolymers associated plasticizers on endocrinal disruption

The prevalence of polymer usage in everyday activities has emerged as a detriment to both human life and the environment. A large number of studies describe severe impacts of micropolymers (MP) and nanopolymers (NP) on various organ systems, including the endocrine system. Additionally, plasticizers utilized as additives have been identified as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). MP/NP, along with associated plasticizers, affect principal signalling pathways of endocrine glands such as the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, and gonads, thereby disrupting hormone function and metabolic processes crucial for maintaining homeostasis, fertility, neural development, and fetal growth. This review delves into the sources, distribution, and effects of micropolymers, nanopolymers, and associated plasticizers acting as EDCs. Furthermore, it provides a detailed review of the mechanisms underlying endocrine disruption in relation to different types of MP/NP.

New Insights into the Formation of Aggregates of Bidisperse Nano- and Microplastics in Water Based on the Analysis of In Situ Microscopy and Molecular Simulation

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in water pose a global threat to human health and the environment. To develop efficient removal strategies, it is crucial to understand how these particles behave as they aggregate. However, our knowledge of the process of aggregate formation from primary particles of different sizes is limited. In this study, we analyzed the growth kinetics and structures of aggregates formed by polystyrene MPs in mono- and bidisperse systems using in situ microscopy and image analysis. Our findings show that the scaling behavior of aggregate growth remains unaffected by the primary particle size distribution, but it does delay the onset of rapid aggregation. We also performed a structural analysis that reveals the power law dependence of aggregate fractal dimension (df) in both mono- and bidisperse systems, with mean df consistent with diffusion-limited cluster aggregation (DLCA) aggregates. Our results also suggest that the df of aggregates is insensitive to the shape anisotropy. We simulated molecular forces driving aggregation of polystyrene NPs of different sizes under high ionic strength conditions. These conditions represent salt concentration in ocean water and wastewater, where the DLVO theory does not apply. Our simulation results show that the aggregation tendency of the NPs increases with the ionic strength. The increase in the aggregation is caused by the depletion of clusters of ions from the NPs surface.

A Preliminary Assessment of Size-Fractionated Microplastics in Indoor Aerosol—Kuwait’s Baseline

The omnipresence of microplastic (MP) in various environmental samples, including aerosols, has raised public health concerns; however, there is presently very limited information on MPs in indoor aerosol. This paper presents a unique dataset where smaller MPs have been sampled using a six-stage cascade impactor from indoor environments in Kuwait. The MP concentration in the indoor air varied between 3.2 and 27.1 particles m⁻³, and the relative MP concentration decreased linearly from the lowest to the highest size fraction. A significant effect of location was observed for the total number of MPs (F_2,14 = 5.80, p = 0.02) and the inhalable fraction (F_2,14 = 8.38, p = 0.005), while location had no effect on the respirable fraction (F_2,14 = 0.54, p = 0.60). A significant effect of the type of air conditioning used was also observed for the total number of MPs (F_2,19 = 5.58, p = 0.01) and the inhalable fraction (F_2,19 = 6.45, p = 0.008), while location had no effect on the respirable fraction (F_2,19 = 1.30, p = 0.30). For the total number of MPs and the inhalable fraction, the concentration was significantly higher for the split unit air-conditioning as compared to the central air-conditioning plants. The presence/absence of carpets had no significant effect on the MP concentrations (total: F_1,19 = 4.08, p = 0.06; inhalable: F_1,19 = 3.03, p = 0.10; respirable: F_1,19 = 4.27, p = 0.05). The shape was dominantly fibers, with few fragments in lower size fractions. These datasets represent the first baseline information for Kuwait, and the smaller MPs in all the samples further underscore the need to develop standardized protocols of MP collection in the ≤2.5 µm fraction that can have more conspicuous health implications.

Searching Nanoplastics: From Sampling to Sample Processing

Nanoplastics (NPs) are considered emerging pollutants, namely unregulated contaminants whose toxic effect on humans and the environment has been demonstrated or suspected. They are the result of the physical fragmentation of the plastics that over time reach smaller dimensions (<100 nm). The issues related to the characterization and quantification of NPs in the environmental matrices are mainly related to the infinitepsimal size, to the fact that they are found in bulk, and to the different physico-chemical forms in which the same polymer can evolve over time by degradation. To deal with the study of a new class of pollutants it is necessary to assess the entire analytical method, carefully considering every single step (sampling, cleanup, qualitative, and quantitative analysis) starting from the validation method in the laboratory. This paper reviews the analytical method steps, focusing on the first ones, which the current literature often underestimates: laboratory tests, sampling, and sample processing; in fact, most errors and the quality of the analyses often depend on them. In addition, all newly introduced sample processing methods were examined.

A review on occurrence, characteristics, toxicology and treatment of nanoplastic waste in the environment

Nanoplastics (NPs) have showed hotspot of discussion in recent years due to their impact in environment as a futuristic major pollutant in water, soil and air. In this correspondence review on the occurrence of nanoplastics and its effect at the environment as a waste have been overviewed and assimilated. It has the direct or indirect effect on aquatic and terrestrial geographical living beings due to its toxicity. The review revealed the major lacking in the field of analysis, database of contaminant quantity and legislative support to essential eradication on the existing imminent pollutant effects. A brief discussion about properties and characters of nanoplastics has been done. The environment exposed with macroplastics, microplastics and nanoplastics has abundantly contaminated the ecosystem surrounding it. Recent studies reveal that the major health effect by nanosize particles has mainly induced toxicity to the aquatic and terrestrial animals when compared to microsize particles and macrosize particles. The drastic effects and its toxicity in living ecosystem due to nanoplastics have been shown. The occurring waste is supposed to manage from environment by treating before entering into environment. The degradation methods for treatment of nanoplastics have been discussed in this review work.

Zebrafish: An emerging model to study microplastic and nanoplastic toxicity

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have received global concern due to its widespread contamination, ingestion in aquatic organisms and the ability to cross the biological barrier. However, our understanding of its bioaccumulation, toxicity, and interaction with other environmental pollutants is limited. Zebrafish is increasingly used to study the bioaccumulation and toxicity of environmental contaminants because of their small size, ease of breed, short life cycle and inexpensive maintenance. The transparent nature of zebrafish embryo and larvae provides excellent experimental advantages over other model organisms in studying the localization of fluorescent-labeled MPs/NPs particles. Zebrafish outplays the traditional rodent models with the availability of transgenic lines, high-throughput sequencing and genetic similarities to humans. All these characteristics provide an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the toxicity of MPs/NPs and associated contaminants. This review summarizes the existing literature on MPs/NPs research in zebrafish and suggests a path forward for future research.

Is color a matter of concern during microplastic exposure to Scenedesmus obliquus and Daphnia magna?

Toxicities of microplastics (MPs) on aquatic organisms have been widely investigated often by using white or transparent MPs. However, various colored MPs scatter in the real aquatic environment. Here we investigated four colored MPs' effects on Scenedesmus obliquus algal growth first. Under the light condition, algal growth increased initially due to hormesis stimulation and then decreased gradually at higher MP concentrations. Green colored MPs exhibited the lowest inhibition effect, probably due to their resemblance to algae; white MPs inhibited the algal growth significantly, which was attributed to the presence of ethanol. Turbulence condition seemed to diminish algal growth differences among groups, but it led to slight oxidative stress. Furthermore, we also tested MP effects on Daphnia magna feeding ability. Results indicated that daphnids were probably not able to distinguish colored MPs from algae. But their algae ingestion amounts increased when MPs reached to 40% of algal cells, probably because daphnids could widen their filtering gapes when food quality decreases. However, this phenomenon did not last until the 3rd day, as the agglomeration of MPs and algae made them settle down. Overall, our results highlighted the color may alter some MP effects and is necessary to be considered in (eco)toxicological studies.

Combined Toxicity of Silver Nanoparticles with Hematite or Plastic Nanoparticles toward Two Freshwater Algae

In the natural environment, the interactions of different types of nanoparticles (NPs) may alter their toxicity, thus masking their true environmental effects. This study investigated the toxicity of silver NPs (AgNPs) combined with hematite (HemNPs) or polystyrene (PsNPs) NPs toward the freshwater algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Ochromonas danica. The former has a cell wall and cannot internalize these NPs, while the latter without a cell wall can. Therefore, the toxicity of AgNPs toward C. reinhardtii was attributed to the released Ag ions, while AgNPs had direct toxic effects on O. danica. Moreover, nontoxic HemNPs ameliorated AgNP toxicity toward C. reinhardtii, by decreasing the bioavailability of Ag ions through adsorption. Despite their role as Ag-ion carriers, HemNPs still reduced the toxicity of AgNPs toward O. danica by competitively inhibiting AgNP uptake. In both algae, Ag accumulation fully accounted for the combined toxicity of AgNPs and HemNPs. However, the combined toxicity of AgNPs and PsNPs was complicated by their significant individual toxicities and the synergistic interactions of these particles with the algae, regardless of differences in Ag accumulation. Overall, in environmental assessments, considerations of the combined toxicity of dissimilar NPs will allow more accurate assessments of their environmental risks.
