Multiple Types of Memory and Everyday Functional Assessment in Older Adults

Objective

Current proxy measures for assessing everyday functioning (e.g., questionnaires, performance-based measures, and direct observation) show discrepancies in their rating of functional status. The present study investigated the relationship between multiple proxy measures of functional status and content memory (i.e., memory for information), temporal order memory, and prospective memory in an older adult sample.

Method

A total of 197 community-dwelling older adults who did (n = 45) or did not meet (n = 152) criteria for mild cognitive impairment (MCI), completed six different assessments of functional status (two questionnaires, two performance-based tasks, and two direct observation tasks) as well as experimental measures of content memory, prospective memory, and temporal order memory.

Results

After controlling for demographics and content memory, the temporal order and prospective memory measures explained a significant amount of variance in all proxy functional status measures. When all variables were entered into the regression analyses, content memory and prospective memory were found to be significant predictors of all measures of functional status, whereas temporal order memory was a significant predictor for the questionnaire and direct observation measures, but not performance-based measures.

Conclusion

The results suggest that direct observation and questionnaire measures may be able to capture components of everyday functioning that require context and temporal sequencing abilities, such as multi-tasking, that are not as well captured in many current laboratory performance-based measures of functional status. Future research should aim to inform the development and use of maximally effective and valid proxy measures of functional ability.

Recovery of content and temporal order memory for performed activities following moderate to severe traumatic brain injury

Few studies have investigated the complex nature of everyday activity memory following traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study examined recovery of content and temporal order memory for performed activities during the first year in individuals who suffered moderate to severe TBI. TBI and control participants completed eight different cognitive activities at baseline (i.e., acutely following injury for TBI) and then again approximately one year later (follow-up). Participants' free recall of the activities provided a measure of content memory. Temporal order memory was assessed with a reconstruction task. Self-report and informant report of everyday memory problems at follow-up were used to examine the relationship between activity memory performances and everyday memory. TBI participants showed significant recovery in both content and temporal order memory for activities during the first year. Despite showing significant recovery, the TBI group's activity memory performances remained poorer than that of controls at follow-up. Greater self- and informant report of everyday memory difficulties was associated with poorer temporal order memory but not content memory for activities. These findings demonstrate recovery in multiple memory processes that support activity memory following moderate to severe TBI. The findings also suggest a stronger link between everyday memory abilities and temporal order memory for activities than activity memory content in a TBI population.

Processing speed and adult age differences in activity memory

Immediate and delayed recall of performed cognitive activities was examined in 136 adults aged 20 to 85. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to assess the association between perceptual speed and age differences in activity memory. The age-related variance in delayed activity recall was reduced by 52% by the statistical control of perceptual speed, and the age-related variance in immediate activity recall was reduced by 91%. Thus, adult age differences in delayed and immediate activity memory were found to be associated with limitations in perceptual speed. The cognitive effort that is required to perform cognitive activities may tax the processing resources of older adults, prohibiting successful encoding of the activities.

Influences of age, performance, and item relatedness on verbatim and gist recall of verb-noun pairs

Age differences in adults' memory for performed actions (e.g., wave hand) are sometimes smaller than age differences in memory for nonperformed phrases. In this study, we examined the conditions under which performance reduces age differences in recall. Younger and older adults performed or read verb-noun phrases that were either related (e.g., actions performed in a kitchen) or unrelated. Performance did not reduce age differences in recall of the exact verbs and nouns used to describe an action, but performance did reduce age differences in memory for the gist of related actions. Older adults especially had difficulty recalling the exact verb used to describe the action. These results suggest that older adults may have better memory for actions than is revealed by tests of verbatim recall. They may remember performing the action but not remember the exact words used to describe the action.

Content memory and temporal memory for actions in survivors of traumatic brain injury

Memory for performed actions, a rehearsal-independent form of memory, was compared to verbal memory in 30 survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and 30 demographically matched controls. Subjects were tested on recognition and recall memory for the content of recently performed actions in the laboratory, as well as the ability to reconstruct the temporal order in which the actions were performed. Each subject performed actions under incidental and intentional memory instructions. Half of the subjects performed 12 actions, the other half 24 actions, with an equal number of usual and unusual actions in each list. Verbal memory was assessed with paired-associate and temporal order tests. Although recall was more proficient overall for the control compared to the brain-injured subjects on both content and temporal memory for actions, memory for actions was better than verbal memory in both groups. Both groups performed better overall on the short compared to the long list of actions and recalled unusual actions better than usual actions. The rehearsal-independent nature of action memory was supported, with no advantage for the intentional instruction. It is proposed that a retrieval deficit may be in part responsible for deficits in memory for actions following TBI. However, preserved ability to benefit from the abundant contextual cues available through motor actions may account for the better recall of actions compared to words.

Adult age differences in temporal memory for cyclic actions

Adult age differences in temporal memory for bipolar or cyclic actions were investigated in three experiments. Cyclic actions are ones that have opposite poles in regard to their effect on an object (e.g., opening and closing a purse). For such actions, the critical memory function is to remember which pole occurred last. Temporal memory was tested by having subjects judge which component of a series of bipolar actions had been performed more recently (e.g., opening or closing a purse). Recency judgments were found to be as accurate under incidental memory conditions as they were under intentional memory conditions for both young and elderly adults. The accuracy of recency judgments was less for bipolar actions performed in three cycles than for bipolar actions performed in one cycle for both young and elderly adults. Adult age differences in the accuracy of recency judgments were found to be negligible.

Variation in external context and adult age differences in action memory

Adult age differences were determined for the memory and retention of the content of actions. Variation in the physical context from the time of performance of the actions to the time of testing for their memory had no effect for either young or elderly adult subjects on the recall or the recognition of the actions either shortly after acquisition or 24 hours later. Both young and elderly subjects showed significant forgetting of actions over a 24-hour retention interval as measured by recall.

Age differences in the recall of actions and cognitive activities: the effects of presentation rate and object cues

In studies of activity memory, age differences have been found in the recall of cognitive activities (sustained mental activities that subjects solve during acquisition) but not in recall of Subject-Performed Tasks (one-step actions that subjects enact during acquisition). To understand the reasons for the discrepant findings, both types of item were included in a study examining the effects of object cues, rate of presentation, and aging. Variations in presentation rate or use of objects did not account for the different findings on the two item types. Even when presentation rate and object cues were matched, larger age differences were found for recall of cognitive activities than of SPTs. Age differences were also affected by the interaction of item type, presentation rate, and the presence of objects during encoding. To identify the variables controlling age differences, more analysis is needed of the features of activities to be remembered.

Temporal memory and content memory for actions: adult age differences in acquisition and retention

Young adult and elderly adult subjects were tested under incidental memory conditions for recognition memory of content and temporal memory for the order of a series of actions performed in the laboratory. The tests were conducted both shortly after completion of the series and 24 hours later, with different sets of actions tested on each occasion. Recognition memory of content showed no forgetting for the young subjects, but significant forgetting for the elderly subjects. Memory for temporal information was substantially greater for the young subjects than for the elderly subjects. Both age groups showed substantial forgetting of temporal information over the 24-hour retention interval.
