Mechanisms for Directional Hearing among Nonmammalian Vertebrates

Comparison of acoustic particle acceleration detection capabilities in three shark species

Behavioural studies have shown that sharks are capable of directional orientation to sound. However, only one previous experiment addresses the physiological mechanisms of directional hearing in sharks. Here, we used a directional shaker table in combination with the auditory evoked potential (AEP) technique to understand the broadscale directional hearing capabilities in the New Zealand carpet shark (Cephaloscyllium isabellum), rig shark (Mustelus lenticulatus) and school shark (Galeorhinus galeus). The aim of this experiment was to test if sharks are more sensitive to vertical (z-axis) or head-to-tail (x-axis) accelerations, and whether there are any differences between species. Our results support previous findings, suggesting that shark ears can receive sounds from all directions. Acceleration detection bandwidth was narrowest for the carpet shark (40-200 Hz), and broader for rig and school sharks (40-800 Hz). Greatest sensitivity bands were 40-80 Hz for the carpet shark, 100-200 Hz for the rig and 80-100 Hz for the school shark. Our results indicate that there may be differences in directional hearing abilities among sharks. The bottom-dwelling carpet shark was equally sensitive to vertical and head-to-tail particle accelerations. In contrast, both benthopelagic rig and school sharks appeared to be more sensitive to vertical accelerations at frequencies up to 200 Hz. This is the first study to provide physiological evidence that sharks may differ in their directional hearing and sound localisation abilities. Further comparative physiological and behavioural studies in more species with different lifestyles, habitats and feeding strategies are needed to further explore the drivers for increased sensitivity to vertical accelerations among elasmobranchs.

Behind the mask(ing): how frogs cope with noise

Albert Feng was a pioneer in the field of auditory neuroethology who used frogs to investigate the neural basis of spectral and temporal processing and directional hearing. Among his many contributions was connecting neural mechanisms for sound pattern recognition and localization to the problems of auditory masking that frogs encounter when communicating in noisy, real-world environments. Feng's neurophysiological studies of auditory processing foreshadowed and inspired subsequent behavioral investigations of auditory masking in frogs. For frogs, vocal communication frequently occurs in breeding choruses, where males form dense aggregations and produce loud species-specific advertisement calls to attract potential mates and repel competitive rivals. In this review, we aim to highlight how Feng's research advanced our understanding of how frogs cope with noise. We structure our narrative around three themes woven throughout Feng's research-spectral, temporal, and directional processing-to illustrate how frogs can mitigate problems of auditory masking by exploiting frequency separation between signals and noise, temporal fluctuations in noise amplitude, and spatial separation between signals and noise. We conclude by proposing future research that would build on Feng's considerable legacy to advance our understanding of hearing and sound communication in frogs and other vertebrates.

Directionality of the lizard ear

Lizards have highly sensitive ears, but most lizard heads are small (1-2 cm in diameter) compared to the wavelengths of sound of frequencies to which they are most sensitive (1-4 kHz, wavelengths 34-8.5 cm). Therefore, the main cues to sound direction that mammals use - binaural time and intensity cues due to arrival-time differences and sound shadowing by the head--will be very small in lizards. The present work shows that acoustical coupling of the two eardrums in lizards produces the largest directionality of any terrestrial vertebrate ear studied. Laser vibrometric studies of tympanic motion show pronounced directionality within a 1.8-2.4 kHz frequency band around the best frequency of hearing, caused by the interference of ipsi- and contralateral inputs. The results correspond qualitatively to the response of a simple middle ear model, assuming coupling of the tympana through a central cavity. Furthermore, observed directional responses are markedly asymmetrical, with a steep gradient of up to 50-fold (34 dB) response differences between ipsi- and contralateral frontal angles. Therefore, the directionality is easily exploitable by simple binaural subtraction in the brain. Lizard ears are the clearest vertebrate examples of directionality generated by tympanic coupling.

Evolution of hearing in vertebrates: the inner ears and processing

This paper considers aspects of the evolution of the vertebrate auditory system from an 'ichthyocentric' perspective. It is argued that all vertebrate auditory systems are required to do certain basic tasks including acoustic feature discrimination, sound source localization, frequency analysis, and auditory scene analysis, among others. These sorts of capabilities arose very early in the evolution of the vertebrates and have been modified by selection in different species. In some cases the same structures have been involved in detection and analysis throughout the vertebrates, while in other cases the mechanism by which the same type of analysis takes place may have changed.

Development of the auditory brainstem of birds: comparison between barn owls and chickens

Birds have proved to be extremely useful models for the study of hearing function. In particular, chickens and barn owls have been widely used by a number of researchers to study diverse aspects of auditory function. These studies have benefited from the advantages offered by each of these two species, including differences of auditory specialization. Direct comparisons between chickens and barn owls become complicated when the degree of auditory specialization and their modes of development are brought into consideration. In this article we review the available literature on the development of the auditory brainstem of chickens and barn owls in the context of such differences. In addition, we present a time line constructed on the basis of common stages of structural differentiation, rather than chronological time. We suggest that such a time line should be considered when discussing comparative data between these two species. Such an approach should facilitate the interpretation of similarities and differences observed in the developmental processes of the auditory system of chickens and barn owls.

Directional response properties of saccular afferents of the toadfish, Opsanus tau

The displacement sensitivity, frequency response, and directional response properties of primary saccular afferents of toadfish (Opsanus tau) were studied in response to a simulation of acoustic particle motion for which displacement magnitudes and directions were manipulated in azimuth and elevation. Stimuli were 50, 100, and 200 Hz sinusoidal, translatory oscillations of the animal at various axes in the horizontal and midsagittal planes. Thresholds in these planes defined a cell's characteristic axis (the axis having the lowest threshold) in spherical coordinates. Recordings were made from afferents in rostral, middle, and caudal bundles of the saccular nerve. The most sensitive saccular afferents responded with a phase-locked response to displacements as small as 0.1 nm. This sensitivity rivals that of the mammalian cochlea and is probably common to the sacculi and other otolith organs of most fishes. Most afferents showed lower thresholds at 100 Hz than at 50 or 200 Hz. Eighty percent of afferents have three-dimensional directional properties that would be expected if they innervated a group of hair cells having the same directional orientation on the saccular epithelium. Of the afferents that are not perfectly directional, most appear to innervate just two groups of hair cells having different orientations. The directional characteristics of afferents are qualitatively correlated with anatomically defined patterns of hair cell orientation on the saccule. In general, azimuths of best sensitivity tend to lie parallel to the plane of the otolith and sensory epithelium. Elevations of best sensitivity correspond well with hair cell orientation patterns in different regions of the saccular epithelium. Directional hearing in the horizontal plane probably depends upon the processing of interaural differences in overall response magnitude. These response differences arise from the gross orientations of the sacculi and are represented, in part, as time differences among nonspontaneous afferents that show level-dependent phase angles of synchronization. Directional hearing in the vertical plane may be derived from the processing of across-afferent profiles of activity within each saccule. Fishes were probably the first vertebrates to solve problems in sound source localization, and we suggest that their solutions formed a model for those of their terrestrial inheritors.

Auditory localization in teleoperator and virtual environment systems: ideas, issues, and problems

The increasing availability and use of advanced high-tech human-machine interfaces raise many interesting questions about what information should be presented to each sensory modality and how the information should be coded for a given modality. In this paper, attention is confined to the auditory component of the interface and, more specifically, to auditory localization. Both teleoperator systems and virtual-environment systems are considered, and attention is focused upon the opportunities and difficulties associated with the use of unnatural perceptual cues in these systems. Of central interest in this discussion is the use of such cues to improve resolution and thereby obtain systems with superlocalization capabilities.
