The effects of lifestyle and type a behavior on the life-stress process

To evaluate the effects of personal factors such as lifestyle and Thpe A behavior on the life-stress process, we analyzed data randomly collected from 428 metropolitan Tokyo residents. Path analysis techniques were implemented to examine the direct and indirect effects of lifestyle and the Type A behavior pattern between life events, subjective stress and depressive symptoms. The following results were obtained: 1. Persons with a healthy lifestyle perceived a lower subjective stress level. 2. Although females with a healthy lifestyle had fewer direct depressive symptoms, males with a healthy lifestyle had fewer indirect depressive symptoms due to alleviation of subjective stress. 3. Type A males perceived a lower subjective stress level and Type A females experienced more life events. It is suggested that mental health is modified not only by lifestyle but also by Type A behavior in the life-stress process. In particular, the preservation and promotion of a healthy lifestyle appear to reduce subjective stress and may be an important factor for the improvement of mental ill health.

Lifestyles and psychosomatic symptoms among elementary school students and junior high school students

OBJECTIVES

To examine the relationship between lifestyles and psychosomatic symptoms in children, we conducted a self-administered questionnaire survey of elementary school students and junior high school students in Japan.

METHODS

We designed an original questionnaire to investigate the lifestyles and psychosomatic symptoms of children. In 1997, responses to the questionnaires were elicited from public elementary school fourth grade students (then aged 9-10) and public junior high school seventh grade students (then aged 12-13). The survey was repeated annually for three years as the students advanced through school.

RESULTS

For both boys and girls, each cross-sectional analysis revealed a strong relationship between lifestyle behaviors and psychosomatic symptoms. Psychosomatic, symptoms scores varied according to daily hours of sleep, eating of breakfast, having strong likes and dislikes of food, bowel habits, and daily hours of television watching. Both boys and girls with "good" lifestyle, behaviors evaluated by the HPI (Health Practice Index) showed lower scores for psychosomatic symptoms.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings show that the lifestyle behaviors of children are significantly associated with psychosomatic symptoms and suggest that poor lifestyle behaviors are likely to increase physical and psychological health risks.

Effects of the XRCC1 gene-environment interactions on DNA damage in healthy Japanese workers

X-ray repair crosscomplementing group 1 (XRCC1) has a central role in base excision repair (BER) and single-strand break repair (SSBR). XRCC1 gene polymorphisms (codons 194, 280, and 399) have been identified, and in some cases have been reported to contribute to variations in DNA repair capacity and susceptibility to cancer. To further characterize the effects of XRCC1 gene polymorphisms and their possible interactions with environmental factors on individual levels of DNA damage, we investigated the XRCC1 genotypes of 222 healthy Japanese workers and analyzed data with respect to smoking, drinking habits, age, and health practice index (HPI). Our results showed that poor HPI would associate with a higher level of tail moment (TM). Individuals with one or two XRCC1(R280H) variant alleles exhibited significantly higher TM values, and these differences were enhanced by alcohol consumption and aging, whereas smoking and poor HPI may cover up the differences. On the other hand, using a stratified analysis, we found that the XRCC1(R194W) variant was associated with a higher TM value in the 40-50 year-old age group, and the XRCC1(R399Q) variant was associated with a lower TM value in the < or =20 pack-years group or in the 40-50 year-old age group. These data suggest that XRCC1 polymorphisms could influence individual DNA repair capacity by interacting with lifestyle factors, and specifically, the data indicated that the XRCC1(R280H) allele may be more important than codon 194 or 399 alleles.

Relationship between behavioral lifestyle and mental health status evaluated using the GHQ-28 and SDS questionnaires in Japanese factory workers

In order to clarify the relationships between lifestyle behaviors and mental health status in Japanese workers, the 28-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) and Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) were administered to 254 male factory workers; further, eight of their personal health practices were surveyed using the Health Practice Index (HPI). Few studies have used the GHQ-28 and SDS simultaneously; moreover, to date, no study has included the lifestyle factors in these scales. We used these tools for the concurrent assessment of mental health status and classified the subjects into high-risk and low-risk groups. The GHQ-28 and SDS scores correlated negatively with the HPI scores. In the older age group, these scores decreased significantly corresponding to an increase in the total number of favorable lifestyle practices followed. Significant relationships were observed between the GHQ-28 subscales and the HPI. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that four of the eight health practices surveyed were significantly related to the mental health status in all subjects. Thus, good health practices appear to be closely associated with good mental health status. However, to establish our results, larger study populations are required for further studies in various occupational fields.

Effect of the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake on posttraumatic stress, lifestyle changes, and cortisol levels of victims

In 1995, the Hanshin-Awaji area in Japan was damaged severely by a major earthquake. In this study, the authors administered questionnaires and obtained blood samples to analyze the relationships among lifestyle, psychological stress, and plasma cortisol levels of victims. The authors questioned 107 male inhabitants of Awaji Island about their lifestyles before and after the earthquake, presence of any symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, and demographic variables. Plasma cortisol levels were determined with enzyme immunoassay. Cortisol level was correlated strongly with change in lifestyle. The highest cortisol levels were found in the group characterized by a high posttraumatic stress disorder score and by a very profound lifestyle change. This group also contained the highest percentage of subjects who had poor health. In summary, the psychological stress induced by the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake was associated with mean cortisol level; however, this relationship was affected by adjustment of lifestyle.

Lifestyle and the development of dyslipidemia: a 4-year follow-up study of middle-aged Japanese Male Office Workers

To examine the lifestyle factors related to the development of dyslipidemia [low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol ≥ 150 mg/dL, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol < 40 mg/dL, or triglyceride ≥ 250 mg/dL], 979 dyslipidemia-free Japanese male office workers aged 35 to 54 years were followed up for four years. The numbers of new incidence cases during the follow-up period were 216 for high LDL cholesterol level, 109 for low HDL cholesterol level, and 78 for high triglyceride level. From the Cox proportional hazards model, adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for the incidence of high LDL cholesterol level were 0.62 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.47-0.82] for consuming alcohol every day, 1.39 (95% CI: 1.10-1.77) for 5-kg/m(2) increase in body mass index (BMI), 1.45 (95% CI: 1.10-1.91) for snacking between meals every day, and 1.64 (95% CI: 1.18-2.30) for not eating vegetables every day. As for the incidence of low HDL cholesterol level, adjusted HRs for current cigarette smoking, consuming alcohol every day, and 5-kg/m(2) increase in BMI were 1.74 (95% CI: 1.17-2.59), 0.61 (95% CI: 0.41-0.89), and 1.79 (95% CI: 1.29-2.46), respectively. Adjusted HRs for the incidence of high triglyceride level were 1.73 (95% CI: 1.07-2.77) for current cigarette smoking, 1.74 (95% CI: 1.10-2.77) for 5-kg/m(2) increase in BMI, and 0.50 (95% CI: 0.27-0.90) for working 10 h per day or more. These results suggest that an increase in BMI, current cigarette smoking, and snacking between meals every day is closely associated with an increased risk of atherogenic lipid profiles. On the other hand, alcohol consumption and eating vegetables every day may have an anti-atherogenic effect on serum lipid profiles.

Passive smoking at work: biochemical and biological measures of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke

Several biochemical and biological measures of tobacco smoke intake were used to evaluate exposure of restaurant personnel to environmental tobacco smoke as compared with active smokers and non-exposed non-smokers. All of the measured parameters--carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb), thiocyanate (SCN) and cotinine in plasma, cotinine and mutagenicity in urine, total white blood cell count (WBC), and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) frequency in cultured lymphocytes--were significantly elevated in the smoker group (n = 22) compared to the non-exposed group (n = 20). Work-related passive exposure (n = 27) was seen most clearly in the cotinine values, both from plasma (mean P-cot in passive smokers 10 ng/ml vs 5.2 ng/ml in non-exposed) and from urine (mean U-cot in passive smokers 56 ng/ml vs 8.3 ng/ml in non-exposed), but significant increases were also seen in the thiocyanate levels (mean P-SNC in passive smokers 58 mumol/l vs 46 mumol/l in non-exposed) and, as a preliminary finding, in total leucocyte count (in passive smokers 8.0 X 10(9)/l vs 6.8 X 10(9)/l in non-exposed). The results demonstrate that environmental tobacco smoke may be an occupational health hazard.
