Abstract
We report here on the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of racemic β-thiobutyrolactone (rac-TBL), as the first chemical synthesis of poly(3-thiobutyrolactone) (P3TB), the thioester analogue of the ubiquitous poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB). The ROP reactions proceed very fast (TOF >12 000 h-1 at r.t.) in the presence of various metal-based catalysts. Remarkably, catalyst systems based on non-chiral yttrium complexes stabilized by tetradentate amino alkoxy- or diamino-bis(phenolate) ligands {ONXOR1,R2 }2- (X=O, N) provide access to cyclic P3TB with either high isoselectivity (Pm up to 0.90) or high syndiotactic bias (Pr up to 0.70). The stereoselectivity can be controlled by manipulation of the substituents on the ligand platform and adequate choice of the reaction solvent and temperature as well. The cyclic polymer topology is evidenced by MALDI-ToF MS, NMR and TGA. Highly isotactic cyclic P3TB is a semi-crystalline material as revealed by DSC.

Abstract
A novel elastomer poly(diethyl itaconate-co-butyl acrylate-co-ethyl acrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (PDEBEG) was designed and synthesized by redox emulsion polymerization based on bio-based diethyl itaconate, butyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, and glycidyl methacrylate. The PDEBEG has a number average molecular weight of more than 200,000 and the yield is up to 96%. It is easy to control the glass transition temperature of the PDEBEG, which is ranged from −25.2 to −0.8 °C, by adjusting the monomer ratio. We prepared PDEBEG/CB composites by mixing PDEBEG with carbon black N330 and studied the oil resistance of the composites. The results show that the tensile strength and the elongation at break of the composites with 10 wt% diethyl itaconate can reach up to 14.5 MPa and 305%, respectively. The mechanical properties and high-temperature oil resistance of the composites are superior to that of the commercially available acrylate rubber AR72LS.

Abstract
The ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of functional 4-alkoxymethylene-β-propiolactones (BPLOR s) by yttrium-bisphenolate complexes was investigated. The ROCOP of equimolar mixtures of BPLOR s of opposite configurations, namely (R)-BPLOR1 /(S)-BPLOR2 [R1 , R2 =OMe, OAllyl, OCH2 Ph (=OBn), OSiMe2 tBu (=OTBDMS)], by the syndioselective Y{ONOOcum }/iPrOH catalyst/initiator system affords P(HBOR1 -alt-HBOR2 ) copolymers with high alternation degrees (altern.=89-94 %), as determined by comprehensive kinetic, 13 C{1 H} NMR spectroscopy, MALDI-ToF MS and ESI MS/MS fragmentation studies. The ROCOP of the (R)-BPLOMe /(S)-BPLOTBDMS combination, featuring a large difference in the substituents' bulkiness, constitutes the only observed exception to this trend (altern.=64 %). On the other hand, the isoselectivity of the Y{ONNOCl }/iPrOH catalyst/initiator system has been exploited to generate, in a one-pot/one-step procedure, original mixtures of isotactic poly(hydroxyalkanoate)s (PHAs). This system efficiently transforms equimolar mixtures of (R)-BPLOAll /(S)-BPLOMe into a 1:1 mixture of the corresponding isotactic iso-(R)-PHBOAll and iso-(S)-PHBOMe homopolymers; almost no copolymerization defects are observed. This new approach has been extended successfully to the ROCOP of equimolar mixtures of racemic monomers, rac-BPLOAll /rac-BPLOMe .

Abstract
A 'Switch' catalysis method is reviewed whereby a single catalyst is switched between ring-opening polymerization and ring-opening copolymerization cycles. It allows the efficient synthesis of block copolymers from mixtures of lactones, epoxides, anhydrides and carbon dioxide. In order to use and further develop such 'Switch' catalysis, it is important to understand how to monitor the catalysis and characterize the product block copolymers. Here, a step-by-step guide to both the catalysis and the identification of block copolymers is presented. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue 'Providing sustainable catalytic solutions for a rapidly changing world'.

Abstract
Reported herein is the first stereoselective controlled ROP of a specific family of racemic functional β-lactones, namely 4-alkoxymethylene-β-propiolactones (BPLOR s). This process is catalyzed by an yttrium complex stabilized by a nonchiral tetradentate amino alkoxy bisphenolate ligand {ONOOR'2 }2- , which features both a good activity and a high degree of control over the molar masses of the resulting functional poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate)s. A simple modification of the R' substituents in ortho and para position on the ligand platform allows for a complete reversal from virtually pure syndioselectivity (Ps up to 0.91 with R'=cumyl) to very high isoselectivity (Pi up to 0.93 with R'=Cl), as supported by DFT insights. This is the first example of a highly isoselective ROP of a racemic chiral β-lactone.

Abstract
This report presents the results of a study on the preparation of iron alkoxide complexes chelated by diiminopyridine ligands and their role in the room temperature polymerization of rac-lactide. Reaction of N,N′-(p-R-C6H4CH2)2-diiminopyridines (R = H (1), F (2)) with FeX2 (X = Cl, Br) yielded the homoleptic complexes [(1)2Fe][FeX4] or [(2)2Fe][FeX4], respectively. Treating the latter with Na[BPh4] afforded the anion exchange product [(2)2Fe][BPh4]2, which was characterized by 1H NMR and absorption spectroscopy, combustion analysis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Various attempts to grow crystals of [(1)2Fe][FeX4] and [(2)2Fe][FeX4] culminated in the isolation of single crystals of [(2)2Fe][Cl6Fe2O] that was characterized by X-ray diffraction. Attempted synthesis of well-defined, mononuclear alkoxide derivatives from [(1)2Fe]2+ or [(2)2Fe]2+ gave mostly intractable products, but in one case we obtained the crystallographically characterized sodium iron cluster Na4Fe2(OC6H4F)8(THF)2. An aryloxide derivative proved accessible by reaction of NaOC6H4F with the mono-ligand precursor LFeCl2 (L = N,N′-dimesityl-diiminopyridine), but characterization of LFe(OC6H4F)2 was limited to a single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, owing to unsuccessful attempts at isolating pure samples. The difficulties encountered in the isolation of pure alkoxide derivatives prompted us to use in-situ generated LFe(OEt)2 for studying the polymerization of rac-lactide. This system was found to be moderately active at room temperature and with a slight preference for the formation of a heterotactic polymer (Pr = 0.54–0.65). Large polydispersities of 1.5–2.0 indicated the presence of transesterification side-reactions, which were confirmed by the presence of peaks with m/z = n 144 + M(EtOH) + M(Na+) and m/z = (n + 0.5) 144 + M(EtOH) + M(Na+) in MALDI-MS.

Abstract
The choice of the anion has a surprisingly strong effect on the incorporation of CO2 into the polymer obtained during the zinc-catalysed copolymerisation of CO2 and cyclohexene oxide. The product span ranges from polyethercarbonates, where short polyether sequences alternate with carbonate linkages, to polycarbonates with a strictly alternating sequence of the repeating units. Herein, we report on the influence of the coordination ability of the anion on the selectivity and kinetics of the copolymerisation reaction.

Abstract
Aliphatic polycarbonates were discovered a long time ago, with their conventional applications mostly limited to low molecular weight oligomeric intermediates for copolymerization with other polymers. Recent developments in polymerization techniques have overcome the difficulty in preparing high molecular weight aliphatic polycarbonates. These in turn, along with new functional monomers, have enabled the preparation of a wide range of aliphatic polycarbonates with diverse chemical compositions and structures. This review summarizes the latest polymerization techniques for preparing well-defined functional aliphatic polycarbonates, as well as the new applications of those aliphatic polycarbonates, esecially in the biomedical field.
