Abstract
BACKGROUND Ammonium persulfate (APS), an oxidizing agent used in hair products, manufacturing, and pool/spa water, can cause skin reactions including allergic contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVE To characterize positive patch test reactions to APS (2.5% pet). METHODS Retrospective analysis of patients tested to the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) screening series from 2015-2018. RESULTS Of 10,526 patients, 193 (1.8%) had positive patch test reactions to APS. Compared to negative patients, APS-positive patients were significantly more likely to be male (43.2% vs. 28.0%, p<0.0001), have primary hand (30.2% vs. 22.0%, p=0.0064), scattered generalized (25.5% vs. 17.9%, p=0.0064), or trunk dermatitis (8.9% vs. 4.9%, p=0.0123), and occupationally-related dermatitis (22.2% vs. 10.9%, p<0.0001). Over half of the APS-positive reactions were currently relevant (57.0%); 19 (9.8%) were related to occupation, especially (68.4%) hairdressers. Swimming pools/spas (23.3%) and hair care products (19.2%) were the most common APS sources. LIMITATIONS Immediate reactions and follow-up testing not captured. CONCLUSIONS The proportion of patients positive to APS was 1.8%. APS positivity was significantly associated with male sex and hand dermatitis. Swimming pool/spa chemicals are important sources of APS exposure.

Abstract
Among the components of air pollution in developing countries and Asia, (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 are known as major water-soluble in-organic compounds that cause particulate matter. Several researchers have been reported that the (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 induce abnormal decreases in body weight, as well as pneumotoxic, and immunotoxic. Moreover, while it has been reported that (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 have detrimental effects on reproduction, specific effects on male fertility have not been addressed in depth. Therefore, the present study evaluated the reproductive toxicity of (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 in spermatozoa under the capacitation condition. Results showed that various sperm motion parameters were significantly altered after inhalation of (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3. In particular, alterations to a range of motion kinematic parameters and to capacitation status were observed after capacitation. In addition, protein kinase A (PKA) activity and tyrosine phosphorylation were altered by (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 regardless of capacitation. Taken together, our results show that inhalation of (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 may induce adverse effects on male fertility such as sperm motility, motion kinematics, and capacitation status via unusual tyrosine phosphorylation by abnormal PKA activity. Therefore, we suggest that exposure to (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 should be highlighted as a health risk, as it may lead to male reproductive toxicity in humans and animals.

Abstract
PURPOSE Medical surveillance of workers in precious metals refineries and catalyst production plants is well established in many countries as a measure to prevent occupational asthma due to platinum (Pt) salts. It was the aim of this study to evaluate the impact of medical surveillance and to define prognostic factors with an emphasis on exposure determinants. METHODS As part of an observational longitudinal study, 96 workers from German precious metals refineries and catalyst production plants with Pt salt allergy underwent a second examination several years (median 67 months) after the initial diagnosis was made. RESULTS When the second examination was conducted, 92 subjects (96 %) had already been transferred to jobs with very low or no exposure to Pt salts. The number of subjects with sensitization to Pt salt as assessed by skin prick test (SPTPt) decreased from 86 to 52 %, and there was a clear improvement for rhinitis, conjunctivitis and contact urticaria between both examinations. Although the number of subjects with asthma symptoms decreased significantly, at the second examination 74 subjects (77 %) continued to suffer from asthma and 51 subjects (53 %) received asthma medication. Airway obstruction or bronchial hyperresponsiveness persisted in 83 subjects (86 %). CONCLUSIONS Secondary prevention in subjects with occupational exposure to Pt salts, as practiced for over 25 years in Germany could not avoid persistent asthma in the majority of cases, although improvements occurred. This study reveals the limitations of the concept that removal from exposure after the occurrence of respiratory symptoms may prevent chronic asthma. It is recommended that removal from exposure should be done immediately after the occurrence of a positive SPTPt, irrespective of symptoms.

Abstract
We present the case of a 29-year-old farmer with hay fever and atopic dermatitis since adolescence who had developed work-related asthma about 5 years earlier. He was sensitized to grass pollen, wheat and rye flour, dust from the floors of the animal facilities (cows and pigs) and grain barn, and a battery of animal feed from his farm. Work-relatedness of his asthma was demonstrated by serial measurements of spirometry and fractional exhaled nitric oxide at work and during a holiday. Immunoblot analyses revealed dominant IgE-binding to grass pollen and triticale (a hybrid of rye and wheat). IgE inhibition experiments demonstrated that sensitization to triticale was not due to cross-reactivity to grass pollen. Testing of specific IgE-antibodies to recombinant wheat allergens showed sensitizations to profilin, peroxidase, and nonspecific lipid transfer proteins type I subfamily 9.1 and 9.7. Abstract
We present the case of a 52-year-old woman with a topic dermatitis since adolescence who developed work-related hand eczema, cough and runny nose 12 years after she had started working as a laboratory technician at a precious metals refinery. While skin prick test with sodium hexachloroplatinate (SPTPt ) was negative, patch testing with ammonium tetrachloroplatinate was positive after 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr. Inhalation challenge with sodium hexachloroplatinate yielded cough, mild shortness of breath, and a maximal decrease of FEV1 of 8% from baseline 24 hr after the challenge. Significant increases of bronchial hyperresponsiveness, exhaled nitric monoxide and sputum eosinophils were documented after the challenge. We conclude that eosinophilic airway disease due to platinum salts may occur in SPTPt negative subjects. Both, patch testing and inhalation challenge with platinum salts should be considered in SPT negative subjects with occupational exposure to precious metal salts and work-related allergic symptoms.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) is both a gas and a ubiquitous inter- and intracellular messenger with numerous physiological functions. As its synthesis is markedly increased during inflammatory processes, NO can be used as a surrogate marker of acute and/or chronic inflammation. It is possible to quantify fractional concentration of NO in exhaled breath (FENO) to detect airway inflammation, and thus improve the diagnosis of asthma by better characterizing asthmatic patients with eosinophilic bronchial inflammation, and eventually improve the management of targeted asthmatic patients. FENO measurement can therefore be viewed as a new, reproducible and easy to perform pulmonary function test. Measuring FENO is the only non-invasive pulmonary function test allowing (1) detecting, (2) quantifying and (3) monitoring changes in inflammatory processes during the course of various respiratory disorders, including corticosensitive asthma.
