Abstract
Quantum mechanical embedding methods hold the promise to transform not just the way calculations are performed, but to significantly reduce computational costs and improve scaling for macro-molecular systems containing hundreds if not thousands of atoms. The field of embedding has grown increasingly broad with many approaches of different intersecting flavors. In this perspective, we lay out the methods into two streams: QM:MM and QM:QM, showcasing the advantages and disadvantages of both. We provide a review of the literature, the underpinning theories including our contributions, and we highlight current applications with select examples spanning both materials and life sciences. We conclude with prospects and future outlook on embedding, and our view on the use of universal test case scenarios for cross-comparisons of the many available (and future) embedding theories.

Abstract
The ONIOM scheme is one of the most popular QM/MM approaches, but its extended application has been so far hindered by the limited availability of force fields in most practical implementations. This paper describes a simple software code to overcome this limitation, and its application to three representative chemical problems. The "Shell Interface for Combining Tinker With ONIOM" (SICTWO) program gives access to all force fields available in the Tinker molecular mechanics program from a Gaussian09 or Gaussian16 calculation. The first application presented is the geometry optimization of dithienobicyclo-[4.4.1]-undeca-3,8-diene-11-one ethylene glycol ketal. A variety of force fields were tested for the MM part, and the molecular structure using the ONIOM(B3LYP:OPLS-AA) method shows good agreement with the experimental results. The second problem is related with enantioselectivity of the vanadium-catalyzed asymmetric oxidation of 1,2-bis( tert-butyl)-disulfide. ONIOM(B3LYP:MM3) results, obtained with SICTWO, are consistent with those of a previous IMOMM(B3LYP:MM3) study. In the third application, we have combined AMOEBA09 polarizable force field with ONIOM to study a water molecule binding on water ice. Calculated ONIOM(ωB97X-D:AMOEBA09) binding energies are consistent with the ωB97X-D results. These studies show SICTWO as an easy-to-use tool that can further expand the use of the multiscale ONIOM method within computational chemistry and computational biology.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is 2-fold. First, we present several extensions to the ONIOM(QM:MM) scheme. In its original formulation, the electrostatic interaction between the regions is included at the classical level. Here we present the extension to electronic embedding. We show how the behavior of ONIOM with electronic embedding can be more stable than QM/MM with electronic embedding. We also investigate the link atom correction, which is implicit in ONIOM but not in QM/MM. Second, we demonstrate some of the practical aspects of ONIOM(QM:MM) calculations. Specifically, we show that the potential surface can be discontinuous when there is bond breaking and forming closer than three bonds from the MM region.

Abstract
DFT and DFT/MM calculations are carried out on the rate-determining step of the addition of dihydrogen to methyl-(N)-acetylaminoacrylate catalyzed by a rhodium catalyst containing a bidentate phosphine–phosphinite ligand. DFT calculations reproduce the experimental results, while DFT/MM calculations do not. The failure of DFT/MM methods for this particular problem is analyzed through a series of calculations with different partitions between the DFT and MM regions, which show that electronic effects of all ligand substituents considered are critical. The analysis of these electronic effects provides key information on the role of each of the substituents in the outcome of the overall catalytic process.

Abstract
We have performed a density functional theory investigation of hydroformylation of ethylene for monosubstituted rhodium-carbonyl catalysts, HRh(CO)3L, where the modifying ligand, L, is a phosphite (L = P(OMe)3, P(OPh)3, or P(OCH2CF3)3), a phosphine (L = PMe3, PEt3, PiPr3, or PPh3), or a N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) based on the tetrahydropyrimidine, imidazol, or tetrazol ring, respectively. The study follows the Heck and Breslow mechanism. Excellent correspondence between our calculations and existing experimental information is found, and the present results constitute the first example of a realistic quantum chemical description of the catalytic cycle of hydroformylation using ligand-modified rhodium carbonyl catalysts. This description explains the mechanistic and kinetic basis of the contemporary understanding of this class of reaction and offers unprecedented insight into the electronic and steric factors governing catalytic activity. The insight has been turned into structure-activity relationships and used as guidelines when also subjecting to calculation phosphite and NHC complexes that have yet to be reported experimentally. The latter calculations illustrate that it is possible to increase the electron-withdrawing capacity of both phosphite and NHC ligands compared to contemporary ligands through directed substitution. Rhodium complexes of such very electron-withdrawing ligands are predicted to be more active than contemporary catalysts for hydroformylation.

Abstract
By using the hybrid IMOMM(B3LYP:MM3) method, we examined the binap-Rh(I)-catalyzed oxidative-addition and insertion steps of the asymmetric hydrogenation of the enamide 2-acetylamino-3-phenylacrylic acid. We report a path that is energetically more favorable for the major enantiomer than for the minor enantiomer. This path follows the "lock-and-key" motif and leads to the major enantiomeric product via an energetically favorable binap-dihydride-Rh(III)-enamide complex. Our theoretical results are consistent with the mechanism that takes place via Rh(III) dihydride formation, that is, oxidative addition of H2 followed by enamide insertion.

Abstract
A computational study with the IMOMM(Becke3LYP:MM3) method is carried out on the mechanism of the enantioselective reaction of complex V(O)(L)(OOH), L= bulky tridentate Schiff base, and bis(tert-butyl) disulfide. The reaction with a given L ligand A is first systematically studied: different conformers of the catalyst are optimized, and the large number of associated transition states are systematically searched. The study is then extended to the geometry optimization of selected transition states associated to other ligands B, C, and D, similar to A but differing in the nature of certain substituents R1, R2, R3. The experimental trends in selectivity for catalysts based on ligands A to D are faithfully reproduced by the calculations. Analysis of the computational results leads finally to the formulation of a simple model that can explain one of the most remarkable aspect of this reaction, namely the large effect on enantioselectivity of ligands seemingly far from each other in the catalyst.
