Genetic polymorphism of serum protein APH-2 found in the Japanese wild mouse (Mus musculus molossinus)

Establishment and characterization of the MSKR inbred strain originated from Japanese wild mice (Mus musculus molossinus)

A new inbred strain, MSKR, originated from Japanese wild mice was established in April, 1998. The MSKR mice were 60% of the C57BL/6N inbred mice in the 60-day body weight. Tail length/head-body length and hind-foot length/head-body length of the MSKR mice were significantly smaller than those of the C57BL/6N mice (0.896 vs 1.061, 0.189 vs 0.204), but ear length/head-body length of the MSKR mice was significantly larger than that of the C57BL/6N mice (0.143 vs 0.137). The age of the first parturition and size of the first litter were 63.20 +/- 2.71 days and 6.20 +/- 0.37, respectively, at the 20th and 22nd inbreeding generations. Genetic characterization of the MSKR strain was performed using 34 microsatellite markers, 29 biochemical markers, 9 immunogenetic markers, 3 coat color markers, and mitochondrial DNA RFLP-haplotypes. The result indicated that this newly established inbred strain has some different gene constitution from already known molossinus and common laboratory strains.

Tawny: a novel light coat color mutation found in a wild population of Mus musculus molossinus, a new allele at the melanocortin 1 receptor (Mc1r) locus

We found a new coat color mutant in a population of Japanese wild mice (Mus musculus molossinus) and called the trait tawny. The tawny mutant is characterized by a light yellowish brown coat color. The tawny hair has a so-called agouti pattern, but the yellow band is greatly lengthened. There are no differences between the tawny and wildtype hairs in size and the number of melanosomes. Genetic analyses revealed that the tawny trait is an autosomal recessive and its gene is located in the distal region on Chromosome 8 between the microsatellite markers D8Mit87 and D8Mit122. An allelism test indicated the tawny mutant gene to be a new allele at the Mc1r locus and dominant to the recessive yellow (Mc1re). The proposed gene symbol for the tawny is Mc1rtaw.

A molecular genetic linkage map of mouse chromosome 2

Interspecific backcross mice were used to create a molecular genetic linkage map of chromosome 2. Genomic DNAs from N2 progeny were subjected to Southern blot analysis using molecular probes that identified the Abl, Acra, Ass, C5, Cas-1, Fshb, Gcg, Hox-5.1, Jgf-1, Kras-3, Ltk, Pax-1, Prn-p, and Spna-2 loci; these loci were added to the 11 loci previously mapped to the distal region of chromosome 2 in the same interspecific backcross to generate a composite multilocus linkage map. Several loci mapped near, and may be the same as, known mutations. Comparisons between the mouse and the human genomes indicate that mouse chromosome 2 contains regions homologous to at least six human chromosomes. Mouse models for human diseases are discussed.

Serological survey of complement factor H in common laboratory and wild mice: a new third allotype

Antigenic specificities of complement factor H from mice were studied serologically. In addition to previously reported allotypes, referred to as H.1 and H.2, a new allotype of complement factor H, H.3, was identified in the BFM/2Ms strain derived from European wild mice. Using three different alloantisera raised against the various mouse factor H allotype, a serological survey of the common laboratory strains and wild-derived strains of Mus musculus and its relatives, Mus spretus, Mus spretoides, and Mus spicilegus was carried out. All of the common laboratory strains examined in this survey had the H.1 allotype except for STR/N which had H.2. The geographical distributions of factor H allotypes in M. musculus were specific to the subspecies. Mice derived from Mus musculus domesticus and Mus musculus castaneus had the H.1 allotype. Mice derived from M. m. musculus, Mus musculus bactrianus, and Mus musculus molossinus had the H.2 allotype. Only BFM/2Ms and BFM/1Mpl strains derived from M. m. domesticus had the novel H.3 allotype. Sera of mice from strains derived from M. spretoides and M. spicilegus cross-reacted with H.2-specific antiserum, and those from M. spretus cross-reacted with H.3-specific antiserum.
