Electronic spectra of metal cluster molecules

The Molecular Footprint of Peptides on the Surface of Ultrasmall Gold Nanoparticles (2 nm) Is Governed by Steric Demand

Ultrasmall gold nanoparticles were functionalized with peptides of two to seven amino acids that contained one cysteine molecule as anchor via a thiol-gold bond and a number of alanine residues as nonbinding amino acid. The cysteine was located either in the center of the molecule or at the end (C-terminus). For comparison, gold nanoparticles were also functionalized with cysteine alone. The particles were characterized by UV spectroscopy, differential centrifugal sedimentation (DCS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). This confirmed the uniform metal core (2 nm diameter). The hydrodynamic diameter was probed by 1H-DOSY NMR spectroscopy and showed an increase in thickness of the hydrated peptide layer with increasing peptide size (up to 1.4 nm for heptapeptides; 0.20 nm per amino acid in the peptide). 1H NMR spectroscopy of water-dispersed nanoparticles showed the integrity of the peptides and the effect of the metal core on the peptide. Notably, the NMR signals were very broad near the metal surface and became increasingly narrow in a distance. In particular, the methyl groups of alanine can be used as probe for the resolution of the NMR spectra. The number of peptide ligands on each nanoparticle was determined using quantitative 1H NMR spectroscopy. It decreased with increasing peptide length from about 100 for a dipeptide to about 12 for a heptapeptide, resulting in an increase of the molecular footprint from about 0.1 to 1.1 nm2.

Wavelength-switchable photocurrent in a hybrid TiO2–Ag nanocluster photoelectrode

A new type of hybrid TiO₂–Ag nanocluster (NC) photoelectrode exhibits wavelength-switchable photocurrent by tuning the light wavelength from ultraviolet (UV) to visible light. The combination of UV-active TiO₂ and visible-light-active Ag NCs with photoelectrochemical behaviour leads to the unique switchable photocurrent in the system.

Size-dependent multispectral photoacoustic response of solid and hollow gold nanoparticles

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging attracts a great deal of attention as an innovative modality for longitudinal, non-invasive, functional and molecular imaging in oncology. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are identified as superior, NIR-absorbing PA contrast agents for biomedical applications. Until now, no systematic comparison of the optical extinction and PA efficiency of water-soluble AuNPs of various geometries and small sizes has been performed. Here spherical AuNPs with core diameters of 1.0, 1.4 and 11.2 nm, nanorods with longitudinal/transversal elongation of 38/9 and 44/12 nm and hollow nanospheres with outer/inner diameters of 33/19, 57/30, 68/45 and 85/56 nm were synthesized. The diode laser set-up with excitations at 650, 808, 850 and 905 nm allowed us to correlate the molar PA signal intensity with the molar extinction of the respective AuNPs. Deviations were explained by differences in heat transfer from the particle to the medium and, for larger particles, by the scattering of light. The molar PA intensity of 1.0 nm AuNPs was comparable to the commonly used organic dye methylene blue, and rapidly increased with the lateral size of AuNPs.

Synthesis of atomic gold clusters with strong electrocatalytic activities

Small atomic gold clusters in solution, Au n , stabilized by tetrabutyl ammonium bromide (TBABr), have been synthesized by a simple electrochemical technique, based on the anodic dissolution of a gold electrode in the presence of TBABr salt, and using acetronitrile as solvent. The presence of clusters in the range Au3-Au11 were detected by MALDI-TOF spectroscopy, and further characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, TEM, AFM, X-ray diffraction, and cyclic voltammetry. Clusters display a semiconductor behavior with a band edge of approximately 2.5 eV. We report here their extraordinarily high electrocatalytic activity toward the O2 reduction reaction in acid solutions, which can explain Zhang's results, showing that a four-electron mechanism seems to occur because of the facile reduction of H2O2 on gold clusters compared to bulk gold or larger gold nanoparticles.

Sub-Nanometer Au Monolayer-Protected Clusters Exhibiting Molecule-like Electronic Behavior: Quantitative High-Angle Annular Dark-Field Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy and Electrochemical Characterization of Clusters with Precise Atomic Stoichiometry

The synthesis and characterization of the clusters Au13[PPh3]4[S(CH2)11CH3]2Cl2 (1) and Au13[PPh3]4[S(CH2)11CH3]4 (2) are described. These mixed-ligand, sub-nanometer clusters, prepared via exchange of dodecanethiol onto phosphine-halide gold clusters, show enhanced stability relative to the parent. The characterization of these clusters features the precise determination of the number of gold atoms in the cluster cores using high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, allowing the assignment of 13 gold atoms (+/-3 atoms) to the composition of both cluster molecules. Electrochemical and optical measurements reveal discrete molecular orbital levels and apparent energy gaps of 1.6-1.7 eV for the two cluster molecules. The electrochemical measurements further indicate that the Au13[PPh3]4[S(CH2)11CH3]2Cl2 cluster undergoes an overall two-electron reduction. The electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of the two Au13 cluster molecules are compared with those of a secondary synthetic product, which proved to be larger Au thiolate-derivatized monolayer-protected clusters with an average core of Au180. The latter shows behavior fully consistent with the adoption of metallic-like properties.
