A study of correlates of hand preferences in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus)

Mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) show no preferential hand use in two self-directed behaviors

Hand preference is the preferential use of one hand for a single task. Its study provides insight into the neural mechanisms underlying motor skills, perception, and cognitive functions. From a comparative perspective, it also offers a window into evolutionary history, shedding light on whether manual preferences stem from genetics, environmental influences, or a combination of both. However, there is a paucity of information on preferential hand use for several primate taxa. Here we examine hand preference for the first time in mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) to determine if there is preferential hand use at the individual and population level as well as sex differences in hand use. We followed 17 wild adult individuals for 10 months and used focal animal sampling (506 focal samples) to record hand use in two types of self-directed behaviors, touching (1246 events) and scratching (1115 events). According to the binomial tests, four individuals were right-hand-preferent, two were left-hand-preferent, and 11 were ambilateral during touching, whereas for scratching seven individuals were right-hand-preferent, two were left-hand-preferent, and eight were ambilateral. At the population level, there was ambilaterality in both behaviors. At the individual level, according to the HI index, hand preference in touching and scratching were not associated and did not vary between sexes. These findings concur with previous studies with howler monkeys and other taxa suggesting that population-level hand preference is not a universal trait across primates.

The evolution and biological correlates of hand preferences in anthropoid primates

The evolution of human right-handedness has been intensively debated for decades. Manual lateralization patterns in non-human primates have the potential to elucidate evolutionary determinants of human handedness, but restricted species samples and inconsistent methodologies have so far limited comparative phylogenetic studies. By combining original data with published literature reports, we assembled data on hand preferences for standardized object manipulation in 1786 individuals from 38 species of anthropoid primates, including monkeys, apes, and humans. Based on that, we employ quantitative phylogenetic methods to test prevalent hypotheses on the roles of ecology, brain size, and tool use in primate handedness evolution. We confirm that human right-handedness represents an unparalleled extreme among anthropoids and found taxa displaying population-level handedness to be rare. Species-level direction of manual lateralization was largely uniform among non-human primates and did not strongly correlate with any of the selected biological predictors, nor with phylogeny. In contrast, we recovered highly variable patterns of hand preference strength, which show signatures of both ecology and phylogeny. In particular, terrestrial primates tend to display weaker hand preferences than arboreal species. These results challenge popular ideas on primate handedness evolution, including the postural origins hypothesis. Furthermore, they point to a potential adaptive benefit of disparate lateralization strength in primates, a measure of hand preference that has often been overlooked in the past. Finally, our data show that human lateralization patterns do not align with trends found among other anthropoids, suggesting that unique selective pressures gave rise to the unusual hand preferences of our species.

Baseline cortisol levels and social behavior differ as a function of handedness in marmosets (Callithrix jacchus)

Population hand preferences are rare in nonhuman primates, but individual hand preferences are consistent over a lifetime and considered to reflect an individual's preference to use a particular hemisphere when engaged in a specific task. Previous findings in marmosets have indicated that left-handed individuals tend to be more fearful than their right-handed counterparts. Based on these findings, we tested the hypotheses that left-handed marmosets are (a) more reactive to a social stressor and (b) are slower than right-handed marmosets in acquiring a reversal learning task. We examined the hand preference of 27 male and female marmosets (ages of 4-7 years old) previously tested in a social separation task and a reversal learning task. Hand preference was determined via a simple reaching task. In the social separation task, monkeys were separated from their partner and the colony for a single 7-hr session. Urinary cortisol levels and behavior were assessed at baseline, during the separation and 24 hr postseparation. Hand preferences were equally distributed between left (n = 10), right-handed (n = 10), and ambidextrous (n = 7) individuals. The separation phase was associated with an increase in cortisol levels and behavioral changes that were similar across handedness groups. However, cortisol levels at baseline were positively correlated with right-handedness, and this relationship was stronger in females than in males. In addition, the occurrence of social behaviors (pre- and postseparation) was positively correlated with right-handedness in both sexes. Baseline cortisol levels did not correlate significantly with social behavior. Acquisition of the reversals was poorer in females than males but did not differ as a function of handedness. We conclude that (a) both stress reactivity and cognitive flexibility are similar across handedness groups and (b) left-handers exhibit less social behavior and have lower basal cortisol levels than ambidextrous and right-handed subjects. The underlying causes for these differences remain to be established.

Forelimb preferences in quadrupedal marsupials and their implications for laterality evolution in mammals

BACKGROUND

Acquisition of upright posture in evolution has been argued to facilitate manual laterality in primates. Owing to the high variety of postural habits marsupials can serve as a suitable model to test whether the species-typical body posture shapes forelimb preferences in non-primates or this phenomenon emerged only in the course of primate evolution. In the present study we aimed to explore manual laterality in marsupial quadrupeds and compare them with the results in the previously studied bipedal species. Forelimb preferences were assessed in captive grey short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) and sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) in four different types of unimanual behaviour per species, which was not artificially evoked. We examined the possible effects of sex, age and task, because these factors have been reported to affect motor laterality in placental mammals.

RESULTS

In both species the direction of forelimb preferences was strongly sex-related. Male grey short-tailed opossums showed right-forelimb preference in most of the observed unimanual behaviours, while male sugar gliders displayed only a slight, not significant rightward tendency. In contrast, females in both species exhibited consistent group-level preference of the left forelimb. We failed to reveal significant differences in manual preferences between tasks of potentially differing complexity: reaching a stable food item and catching live insects, as well as between the body support and food manipulation. No influence of subjects' age on limb preferences was found.

CONCLUSIONS

The direction of sex-related differences in the manual preferences found in quadrupedal marsupials seems to be not typical for placental mammals. We suggest that the alternative way of interhemispheric connection in absence of corpus callosum may result in a fundamentally distinct mechanism of sex effect on limb preferences in marsupials compared to placentals. Our data confirm the idea that non-primate mammals differ from primates in sensitivity to task complexity. Comparison of marsupial species studied to date indicate that the vertical body orientation and the bipedalism favor the expression of individual- and population-level forelimb preferences in marsupials much like it does in primates. Our findings give the first evidence for the effect of species-typical posture on the manual laterality in non-primate mammals.

Posture does not matter! Paw usage and grasping paw preference in a small-bodied rooting quadrupedal mammal

BACKGROUND

Recent results in birds, marsupials, rodents and nonhuman primates suggest that phylogeny and ecological factors such as body size, diet and postural habit of a species influence limb usage and the direction and strength of limb laterality. To examine to which extent these findings can be generalised to small-bodied rooting quadrupedal mammals, we studied trees shrews (Tupaia belangeri).

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS

We established a behavioural test battery for examining paw usage comparable to small-bodied primates and tested 36 Tupaia belangeri. We studied paw usage in a natural foraging situation (simple food grasping task) and measured the influence of varying postural demands (triped, biped, cling, sit) on paw preferences by applying a forced-food grasping task similar to other small-bodied primates. Our findings suggest that rooting tree shrews prefer mouth over paw usage to catch food in a natural foraging situation. Moreover, we demonstrated that despite differences in postural demand, tree shrews show a strong and consistent individual paw preference for grasping across different tasks, but no paw preference at a population level.

CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE

Tree shrews showed less paw usage than small-bodied quadrupedal and arboreal primates, but the same paw preference. Our results confirm that individual paw preferences remain constant irrespective of postural demand in some small-bodied quadrupedal non primate and primate mammals which do not require fine motoric control for manipulating food items. Our findings suggest that the lack of paw/hand preference for grasping food at a population level is a universal pattern among those species and that the influence of postural demand on manual lateralisation in quadrupeds may have evolved in large-bodied species specialised in fine manipulations of food items.

Observations of hand preference in wild groups of white-faced sakis (Pithecia pithecia) in Suriname

Hand preference is well observed in humans and some primates. Unlike many other primates, however, humans show a consistent hand preference across a variety of tasks, and a distinct right-handed skew at the population level. Although there are a moderate number of published studies, primate hand preference literature is unbalanced by the large number of studies on only a few species. No previous studies have addressed hand preference in white-faced sakis (WFS; Pithecia pithecia). We followed three habituated groups of wild WFS in Suriname and recorded individual hand preference for six different manual behaviors. There was no consistent hand preference across a range of uni-manual behaviors for any individual. Likewise, there were significantly more ambidextrous individuals in the population than expected (χ(2) (df = 2) = 11.2, P = 0.004) and thus, no population level hand preference. Our findings contribute baseline data to the debate of primate hand lateralization, and support the notion that lateralization of hand function does not characterize all species.

Does body posture influence hand preference in an ancestral primate model?

BACKGROUND

The origin of human handedness and its evolution in primates is presently under debate. Current hypotheses suggest that body posture (postural origin hypothesis and bipedalism hypothesis) have an important impact on the evolution of handedness in primates. To gain insight into the origin of manual lateralization in primates, we studied gray mouse lemurs, suggested to represent the most ancestral primate condition. First, we investigated hand preference in a simple food grasping task to explore the importance of hand usage in a natural foraging situation. Second, we explored the influence of body posture by applying a forced food grasping task with varying postural demands (sit, biped, cling, triped).

RESULTS

The tested mouse lemur population did not prefer to use their hands alone to grasp for food items. Instead, they preferred to pick them up using a mouth-hand combination or the mouth alone. If mouth usage was inhibited, they showed an individual but no population level handedness for all four postural forced food grasping tasks. Additionally, we found no influence of body posture on hand preference in gray mouse lemurs.

CONCLUSION

Our results do not support the current theories of primate handedness. Rather, they propose that ecological adaptation indicated by postural habit and body size of a given species has an important impact on hand preference in primates. Our findings suggest that small-bodied, quadrupedal primates, adapted to the fine branch niche of dense forests, prefer mouth retrieval of food and are less manually lateralized than large-bodied species which consume food in a more upright, and less stable body posture.

Consistency of hand preference across low-level and high-level tasks in Capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella)

Numerous studies investigating behavioral lateralization in capuchins have been published. Although some research groups have reported a population-level hand preference, other researchers have argued that capuchins do not show hand preference at the population level. As task complexity influences the expression of handedness in other primate species, the purpose of this study was to collect hand preference data across a variety of high- and low-level tasks to evaluate how task complexity influences the expression of hand preference in capuchins. We tested eleven captive brown capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) to determine if they show consistent hand preferences across multiple high- and low-level tasks. Capuchins were expected to display high intertask consistency across the high-level tasks but not the low-level tasks. Although most individuals showed significant hand preferences for each task, only two of the high-level tasks that involved similar hand motions were significantly positively correlated, indicating consistency of hand preference across these tasks only. None of the tasks elicited a group-level hand preference. High-level tasks elicited a greater strength of hand preference than did low-level tasks. No sex differences were found for the direction or strength of hand preference for any task. These results contribute to the growing database of primate laterality and provide additional evidence that capuchins do not display group-level hand preferences.

A Meta-Analysis of Primate Hand Preferences, Particularly for Reaching

P. F. MacNeilage, M. G. Studdert-Kennedy, and B. Lindblom (1987) proposed a progression for handedness in primates that was supposed to account for the evolution of a right bias in human handedness. To test this proposal, the authors performed meta-analyses on 62 studies that provided individual data (representing 31 species: 9 prosimians, 6 New World monkeys, 10 Old World monkeys, 2 lesser apes, and 4 greater apes), of the 118 studies of primate handedness published since 1987. Although evidence of a population-level left-handed bias for prosimians and Old World monkeys supports P. F. MacNeilage et al., the data from apes, New World monkeys, and individual species of prosimians and New World monkeys do not. Something other than primate handedness may have been the evolutionary precursor of the right bias in hand-use distribution among hominids.

Skeletal biology, functional asymmetry and the origins of "Handedness"

The past decade has witnessed the (re)emergence of a debate as to whether handedness is apomorphic within hominins. There are both qualitative and quantitative arguments, some which draw non-human primates into the handed sphere and others which exclude them. Ultimate questions concern origins of structural asymmetry of both brain and body and lateralized behaviours with implications for tool use and language. Lateralization is thus an important realm of phylogenetic study, and archaeologists and psychologists alike have sought to identify handedness within material culture. However, hand preference for tool manufacture and use among extant non-human primates, such as Cebus and Pan, suggests that the archaeological record may well be mute regarding the origins of laterality. In this paper, an argument is put forward positioning skeletal biology as a viable approach to the handedness origins issue. Behaviour is a mediator of the complementary processes of geometric modelling (change in size and shape) and histological remodelling (disuse osteopenia; microfracture repair); therefore, directional asymmetry in the pattern of skeletal modelling and remodelling is a putative signal of lateralized activity.

Laterality of tail resting posture in three species of New World primates

A variety of mammalian species including prosimian and simian primates wrap their tails around their bodies as a means of thermoregulation and for reasons of comfort during resting or sleep. Adopting such a resting posture requires an animal to move its tail either to the right or to the left of the midline of its body, and thus to perform a lateralized behavior. The purpose of this study was to assess the occurrence of lateral biases in tail resting posture in three species of New World primates. Twenty squirrel monkeys, spider monkeys, and howler monkeys, respectively, were observed and data on tail resting posture were collected and analyzed. The results demonstrate (1) that individual squirrel monkeys and spider monkeys exhibit highly significant lateral biases in tail resting posture; (2) a lack of a lateral bias at the group level; (3) that howler monkeys fail to show side preferences in tail wrapping; (4) a lack of sex differences in this behavior in all three species; and (5) a lack of significant correlations between preferred side of tail resting posture and preferred side of hand use in simple reaching tasks which had been assessed with a subset of animals in previous studies. Thus, the present study provides evidence for a behavioral asymmetry which is well-known to occur in rats but has not been described so far in nonhuman primates, and which might offer an additional approach to the investigation of the mechanisms underlying functional cerebral asymmetries.

Individual hemispheric asymmetry in vocal fold control of the squirrel monkey

In ten squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus), electrodes were implanted into the left and right facial motor cortex at sites producing bilateral vocal fold adduction when electrically stimulated. All animals, in addition, had electrodes in the periaqueductal grey of the midbrain (PAG) at sites producing vocalization when electrically stimulated. In eight out of ten animals, motorcortical stimulation during periaqueductally elicited vocalization caused a change in vocal output. This change, in four cases, was more severe with left-sided ipsilateral motor cortex/PAG stimulation than with right-sided ipsilateral stimulation. In the other four cases, right-sided stimulation was more effective than left-sided stimulation. It is concluded that the majority of squirrel monkeys show a hemispheric asymmetry in vocal fold control with left- and right-sided dominance distributed about equally in the population.
