Effect of saline irrigation water on olive oil composition

Fatty Acid Composition, Phytochemistry, Antioxidant Activity on Seed Coat and Kernel of Paeonia ostii from Main Geographic Production Areas

Paeonia ostii is an important woody oil plant cultivated in China on a large scale. Its seed oil is enriched with unsaturated fatty acids and a high content of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which are beneficial to human health. The aim of this research is to determine the qualitative traits characteristic of P. ostii seed from various production areas in China. In this study, seed quality traits were evaluated on the basis of proximate composition, content of fatty acids, tocopherol, secondary metabolites, and the antioxidant activity of seed coat (PSC) and kernel (PSK). A high content of total fatty acids (298.89–399.34 mg g⁻¹), crude protein (16.91%–22.73%), and total tocopherols (167.83–276.70 μg g⁻¹) were obtained from PSK. Significant differences were found in the content of palmitic acids (11.31–14.27 mg g⁻¹), stearic acids (2.42–4.24 mg g⁻¹), oleic acids (111.25–157.63 mg g⁻¹), linoleic acids (54.39–83.59 mg g⁻¹), and ALA (99.85–144.71 mg g⁻¹) in the 11 main production areas. Eight and seventeen compounds were detected in PSC and PSK, respectively. A significantly higher content of total phenols was observed in PSC (139.49 mg g⁻¹) compared with PSK (3.04 mg g⁻¹), which was positively related to antioxidant activity. This study indicates that seeds of P. ostii would be a good source of valuable oil and provides a basis for seed quality evaluation for the production of edible oil and potential ALA supplements from the promising woody oil plant.

Effects of reclaimed wastewater irrigation and fertigation level on olive oil composition and quality

BACKGROUND

Irrigation of olives increases fruit and oil yields. Due to scarcity of freshwater, low-quality water including recycled wastewater (RWW) is utilized in orchards. Here, effects of irrigation with RWW and of fertilization on the composition and quality of olive oil were studied.

RESULTS

Long-term RWW irrigation of 'Barnea' and 'Leccino' olive had no significant negative effects on either oil composition or quality parameters, including free fatty acids (FFAs), peroxide value (PV), total phenolics content (TPC), fatty acid profiles and organoleptic characteristics. The average FFA contents for both cultivars were less than 0.8% during most of the experimental period, except the seasons 2009 and 2012-2013 for Barnea where the values were raised up to 1.4%. The measured PV levels were less than 9 and 5 mmol O₂ kg^-1 oil for Barnea and Leccino, respectively. In the last season of the experiment for each cultivar, higher TPC were observed in oils obtained from RWW irrigation with reduced fertilization (Re-) as compared to the treatments with the recommended fertilization [freshwater irrigation (Fr) and RWW irrigation (Re+) with standard dose of fertilizers], where the TPC increment exceeded 70% in Barnea and 25% in Leccino. The treatments had only minor effects on the fatty acid profile, reflected in slightly altered levels of C18:2 and C18:3 fatty acids.

CONCLUSION

The use of RWW, combined with the consideration of nutrients arriving with such water to provide appropriate fertilization, was found suitable for olive irrigation to ensure optimal yields while preserving oil quality. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Irrigation-induced salinity affects olive oil quality and health-promoting properties

BACKGROUND

Olive oil, a functional food, is increasingly produced from trees irrigated with water containing high concentrations of salts. We studied the effects of irrigation-induced salinity on quality and health-related compounds in olive oil. Trees (cv Barnea) were grown in lysimeters with continuous control and monitoring of root-zone salinity. Salinity in the root zone was altered by changing irrigation solution salinity or by changing the extent of leaching. Extracted oil was analyzed for quality parameters including free fatty acid content, polyphenol, tocopherol, sterol and carotenoid levels, fatty acid (FA) profile, and antioxidative capacity.

RESULTS

While not all parameters changed, fruit water percentage and fruit oil content significantly decreased with increasing exposure to salt. As salinity increased, there was a desirable rise in measured polyphenol and tocopherol levels and a contrasting undesirable reduction in a number of important compounds, including 16:1 and 18:3 FA.

CONCLUSION

The possible negative effects on olive oil quality due to FA-related parameters should concern producers dependent on, or considering, irrigation with high-salinity water sources. A number of important quality parameters were differentially influenced by the method of inducing the root zone salinity, suggesting that additional environmental variables leading to oxidative responses were affected by the treatments. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Saline water irrigation effects on fruit development, quality, and phenolic composition of virgin olive oils, cv. Chemlali

Field-grown olive trees (cv. Chemlali) were used over two growing seasons to determine the effect of different saline water irrigation levels on fruit development characteristics, yield, and virgin olive oil (VOO) quality. The plants were irrigated with fresh water (FW; ECe=1.2 dS m(-1)) and saline water (SS; ECe=7.5 dS m(-1)). Fruit weight, olive, and oil content decreased under irrigation with saline water. Total oil contents were 27.85 and 25.7% fresh weight (fw) during 2005 in FW and SS irrigated plants, respectively. However, major phenolic compounds (tyrosol, hydroxytyrosol, vanillic,...) and total phenol concentrations in VOO increased under saline water irrigation. In 2005, total phenol contents were 198 and 223 mg/kg of oil in FW and SS treatments, respectively. Furthermore, VOO from SS treated plants showed higher contents of oleic, linoleic, linolenic, and heptadecanoic acids than FW ones, and oil samples of both treatments were classified as "extra virgin".
